Book Description

This book traces the cause of many chronic health problems to our modern diet and shows how a return to traditional foods can improve one's well-being.

Modern medicine now recognizes that the present-day Western diet is responsible for many of today's chronic illnesses. Nutritionists and anthropologists have noted the decline in health that accompanies indigenous peoples' transition from traditional to modern diets. In Traditional Foods Are Your Best Medicine, Ron Schmid explains how a return to a traditional diet can help you reduce your risk of heart attack by 50 percent; fight allergies, chronic fatigue, arthritis, skin problems, and headaches; recover from colds and flu in a day or two; and increase your life-expectancy. Chapters focusing on the major food groups, common diets, and health goals enable you to tailor a diet to your special needs.

New edition, previously titled Native Nutrition.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compliment to Nourishing Traditions!!.......2007-07-13

Awesome book on the principles of traditional healing foods. This is a great addition for anyone who wants to learn true nutrition and about the great discoveries by Weston. A Price. I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars good introduction to Traditional nutrition.......2004-01-20

Schmid's book was the first one I read on the work of Weston A. Price and Francis Pottenger. It is a very good overview of the subject of Tradtional diets. If you are wondering what "Traditional diets" are, they are simply the way people ate before big business took over food production, and made shelf life and profit margin more important than the nutritional quality of food.

Price was a dentist who embarked on a decade long research project in the late 1930s to find the healthiest people on Earth and study what they ate and how they ate it. His studies ranged all over the world, covering all different races. Schmid has done a good job of giving an overview of Price's findings.

The only issues I have with this book are that Schmid falls for the cholesterol scam in discussing heart disease, and that he also falls for the idea that the term "life expectancy" as used in statistics means the average age of death. (page 66) It doesn't. Life Expectancy as an arithmetic average would be reasonably close to the median age of death in a perfect Bell curve population sample, but such perfect samples only exist on paper, not in reality. The median age of death, that is the age by which half of the population died, was 57 in 1900. This means that half the population lived to be 57 or older. Kind of different than saying the average age of death was 45-50. In 2000, the median age of death was only 78, so there hasn't been as much gain as we are led to believe. Neither figure addresses the health or quality of life of people at those ages, either. A minor point in the grand scheme of this book. His discussion of life expectancy differences for those 40 and over on the rest of the page is still very much true and sets the record straight on the PR hype we are given about our current state of health.

For more in-depth information on fats and cholesterol, I recommend Mary Enig's book, Know Your Fats.

This is a great book, and will open your eyes to a better way to eat and improve your health. I heartily recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Changing a (new) life.......2003-11-26

I first read this book in 1987, when it was initially published. I'd picked it up in a bookstore on Fifth Avenue (that's how well I remember the occasion, 16 years later), started to read, and couldn't put it down. So I bought what for me then was an expensive book and finished it that night.

It was difficult to know who to admire more after after I'd completed it, Ron Schmid, who so lucidly and modestly outlined the accomplishments of Weston Price (really, the centerpiece of the book), or Price himself, an extraordinary man whose self-supported, worldwide investigations of the food traditions of native cultures were nothing less than revolutionary in what they implied for how most of us eat--and live--today. In any case, I felt oddly moved by this book--a strange thing to say considering its subject--as if some real portion of an invaluable truth had been exposed to me.

Three years later, I used this book to develop an eating plan for my pregnant wife, including cod liver oil every day and a lot of fish and raw milk cheeses (the closest we could come, even in Manhattan, to any raw milk products). With all of that, our son decided to wait two weeks beyond his due date to make his appearance--21 1/2'' long and weighing over nine pounds--with the obstetrician remarking that my wife's placenta was twice the normal weight, in fact was the largest she'd seen in all her years of delivering children. I don't know whether either fact can be attributed to the diet my wife had followed, but the important thing is that our son turned out to be very bright, healthy, and the owner of a sweet temperament (our first clue of that being that he was effectively sleeping through the night when he was two weeks old)--qualities that this book suggest are not at all unusual when pregnant women follow traditional diets.

So, for me this book has some sort of talismanic power, the kind I associate with other profound life-transforming (or -generating) reading experiences. In that sense, I'm not particularly interested in challenging ANY part of it, as some others here have done, because I feel its general, encompassing theme is so strong and effectively expressed by the writer, and because, as far as I know, Schmid was a trailblazer in introducing (and explicating so clearly) Weston Price's work to the general reading public. I will add, though, that anyone interested in this book, should and even must buy a copy of Sally Fallon and Mary Enig's Nourishing Traditions, which extends Schmid's (and Price's) generalities into the American kitchen. It's as much a treasure as Schmid's book, as the two together, like Jack Sprat and his wife, cover everything (including how to think about fat), from principles to practicalities, that you might need to build new lives out of ancient practices.

4 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia Type Version of Traditional Foods.......2003-09-10

This book can be a companion book to other books recommended by the Weston Price Organization. It is more or less an "encyclopaedic" type style to traditonal foods information using the Weston Price book as a guideline, but going into a more of an updated, and practical style.

There is a lot information that I found useful, such as the grading of salmon (which I never knew about), or getting calcium from eggshells to name just a few. However, he does not tell you how much calcium you are getting by eating eggshells. Also, I could never grind it to a powder in a blender as he said. I had better results with just a mortar and pestle.

On saturated fats, try as I might, I cannot find anything he has to say against the use of saturated fats as criticized by Fallon or Brynes. (Perhaps they have become somewhat fanatical about Price's diet). He is, however, against the modern way of raising animals which he believes is not the same as our ancestors. He points out that a lot of animal's mouths are being used as convenient garbage dumps, and proceeds to name all the types of garbage being eaten, that's right, garbage! This may alter the fat content, metabolism, ratios, etc., to a state that may not be healthy for you or the animals fed on such a diet. I agree on this point wholeheartedly! But, in no way do I see him telling us in the meantime to eat vegetables only and avoid all animal products! Properly raised animals that is.

There is also an explanation of the death rate of earliers years of how long Americans live are skewed. I never quite understood this, as I read about it in other books but there is no explanation how they concluded this, but he gives it here and it's so simple to understand! This should tip you off that this book is fairly lucid and logically written and I highly recommend it for a better overall view and guide to the Weston Price diet.

3 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag.......2002-03-12

This book is well-written and provides an excellent synopsis of Dr. Weston Price's research into traditional diets from many peoples around the world. Dr. Schmid writes lucidly and shows the benefits and limitations of traditional diets in treating various diseases.

The book goes wrong, like so many others, in its demonization of saturated fat. Schmid is simply wrong about saturated fats causing heart disease, cancer, and ill health in general. He is also wrong in asserting that our ancestors did not eat a lot of saturated fat. This is strange coming from someone who is so obviously familiar with Price's research which showed every population group to be eating diets rich in saturated fats and these people, as Schmid knows, were supremely healthy.

I think a better book to get would be Lutz and Allan's LIFE WITHOUT BREAD or Fallon and Enig's NOURISHING TRADITIONS.

    5 out of 5 stars sweet satisfaction.......2007-01-17

This cookbook is great and the recipies are really easy to follow. The Turtle Cake is awsome. I am looking forward to trying each recipie, specially the holiday cakes.

5 out of 5 stars Great for no fuss baking.......2007-01-10

I received this book as a gift and absolutely love it. It makes baking simple and uncomplicated. Baking from scratch is good for some but most of us do not have that kind of time. This book allows for great tasting and great looking desserts such that no one would guess you took a shortcut.

5 out of 5 stars Betty Crocker cake mix cookbook.......2006-09-20

This is an excellent book as the instructions are written in a clear concise format. Recipes include a variety of desserts--cakes, cookies, breads, and special occasion cakes for birthday, Christmas, and other holidays. Even the novice cook would benefit from this cookbook as I believe these are "never fail" recipes which is a good boost to the beginning baker! Tips are also given at the beginning of the book to make sure the baker has all the information he/she needs as well as a consumer Q & A section is given.

2 out of 5 stars Cake Mix Doctor MUCH Better!.......2006-08-07

Many of these recipes are -follow the instructions on the box- and do something cute with the finished product: cut in pieces and make a bunny cake,a sailboat cake, a butterfly cake, a computer cake, etc., or add food coloring and make a rainbow cake. I was expecting more RECIPES.

4 out of 5 stars Fun for Families.......2005-11-01

If you are relatively new to cake decorating, or want to make something a bit unusual for your family, this book would be a useful tool. It features cake recipes for use with boxed mixes, recipes for frostings and glazes, and recipes for cookies, pies, cheesecakes, and other desserts, as well as some decorating ideas.

I would rate the decorating ideas in the neighborhood of the Family Fun cake decorating book. They are not amazingly difficult or complicated, and they don't require a lot of special tools. Some of my favorites are the 3D sand castle cake, reindeer cupcakes, and ballet slippers carved from a sheet cake. There aren't any fondant designs; most use frosting and/or other edible accents. If you are used to looking at the Wilton yearbooks for decorating ideas, this book is some relief, because it shows you ways to carve and shape cakes without purchasing a bunch of specialized pans. One down side is that several of the cake designs described in the book do not include photographs. Another is that only two sections of the book are dedicated to decorated cakes--the others are more traditional, with mostly frosting or glaze coverings and possibly some fruit or nuts for garnish.

The recipes are great for their sheer variety. Sections include Bake and Take (my favorite here is the S'mores cake), Wonderfully Indulgent (I want to try the Peanut Butter Silk and French Silk Hazelnut cakes), Special Celebrations, Heavenly Holidays (the candy cane cake is a cute idea), Come for Brunch, Scrumptious Desserts (includes cheesecakes, tarts, and baked Alaska cake), Cookies and Bars, and Frostings and Glazes.

I think cake mixes can be a great foundation for delicious cakes, but some of the recipes I've tried from this book haven't been too exceptional. The chocolate turtle cake was only okay, and the cherry-chocolate chip cake wasn't as good as I'd hoped, either.

Still, this book has a lot to offer. The add-in ingredients aren't difficult to find, there are recipes for a variety of tastes (mandarin orange to grasshopper fudge to caramel carrot to lemonade cakes), and cakes appropriate for diverse occasions.
I liked the tips for each recipe that suggest variations, and the diagrams for assembling shaped cakes are clear and well-done. I admit I also liked the nostalgic bits--a brief history of Betty Crocker's 50 years, and inset photos of some advertisements over the years. The book also provides helpful general recommendations for successful baking.

I think Betty Crocker also publishes another book focused on decorating that provides more photos (and some identical photos) of the designs outlined in this book. I think I remember seeing a photo of the sailboat cake, for example, in that edition, but this book only includes sailboat cake directions and a diagram. Still, between the two, I would recommend this version, simply because the variety of the recipes and general baking tips are more useful than the designs, which are cute, but not anything you couldn't design yourself with a little experience and imagination.

The standard Cake Box is full of unimaginative sin. Active ingredients: Air and sweetness. (Like a politician on election eve?) With the help of this book and the zany ingredients suggested, your Cake Mix becomes something else entirely.

You will need a friend or two. The whimsical nature of these "recipes" brings a touch of hilarity to the kitchen that is best shared. Rolling around the floor in fits of laughter by your self is just not proper. You will also need a friend to help you eat the resulting behemoth. 3 bananas, after all, do add a certain bulk to the product.

This is a fantastically fun kitchen fantasy. Just don't get carried away. You will need some place besides your own tummy to tuck these treats.

5 out of 5 stars EASY BAKING. SERVE AND ACCEPT THE COMPLIMENTS!.......2003-02-13

Love great desserts but hate spending all that time shaking and baking? Talk about just desserts! Jill Snider has compiled a volume of nifty recipes that promise tasty treats that are, well, a piece of cake. Thought he Duncan Hines logo implies the book has been sanctioned by them, you can use any boxed cake mix, even your favorite store label. Starting with a box of mix immediately cuts out several time-consuming steps, such as measuring and sifting. And those cake mixes will help create scores of incredible edibles --- not just cakes, but cookies, muffins and tortes.techniques The (few) color photos enhance the
easy-to-follow recipes. Just add your appetite.

2 out of 5 stars Easy to Use, But With Challenges.......2002-10-10

Jill Snider proves the versatility of cake mixes in her book Cake Mix Magic: 125 Easy Desserts...Good as Homemade. Snider uses basic cake mixes to create Pineapple Mandarin cakes, Lemon Glazed Cheesecake Squares, and even a Chocolate Yule Log. In total, there are over 150 recipes in this book.

The most popular recipe in this book in my household is the Chocolate Nut Bars, on page 148. The recipe only uses ingredients that I readily have on hand: chocolate cake mix, eggs, butter, brown sugar, canned icing. The recipe was simple, easy-to-follow, and tasted great.

While I had success with the Chocolate Nut Bars, many of the recipes in the book rely on ingredients that I don't have readily at hand. For example, sour cream, cream cheese, light cream, plain yogurt and heavy cream are called for in many of the recipes. These ingredients spoil quickly, and I only buy them when I need to "plan" for some baking. If the idea of this book is for use by cooks "on the go," I'm not sure how successful they will be using the recipes in a hurry if planning is required for the ingredients.

The format of the book made it easy to use. The pages utilized white space effectively, and the side bars containing tips and variations really added value. However, the recipes were lacking nutritional information. In today's health conscious society, nutrition information is essential, even if the recipes are far from "health conscious." For a future revision of this book, I would strongly recommend adding that information.

When compared to The Cake Mix Doctor, I'd buy that one instead, on pictures alone. With over 150 recipes in Cake Mix Magic, there are only 11 pictures of the cakes, and no decorating ideas or tips.

5 out of 5 stars Easy with fabulous results.......2002-10-07

This is an easy to use cookbook, and oh boy, the results are fabulous. A real family pleaser.

2 out of 5 stars better books out there.......2001-08-21

Overall not a bad cookbook but I think that there are better cake cookbooks out there. I much prefer the Cake Mix Doctor cookbook by Ann Byrn along the same lines and here's why. There is a picture of every cake, something that is missing in this book. Also there are recipes for homemade frosting, glazes etc instead of just instructing you to use canned frosting. Just a little something more to give it the "homemade" feel.

      5 out of 5 stars A mouth-watering collection of outstanding recipes.......2001-07-05

In Cake Magic, expert cake baker Jill Snider has compiled an impressive and mouth-watering collection of outstanding recipes for cakes, bars, squares, and more. From Lemon Tote Cake, Apricot Hazelnut Torte, Pumpkin Cheesecake; Apple Nut Coffee Cakes; and Brazil Nut Fruitcake; to White Chocolate Macadamia Oatmeal Cookies; Applesauce Loaf; Triple Chocolate Bundt Cake; Lime Daiquiri Cake; and Peach Cobbler, Cake Magic recipes are showcased with clear and easy-to-follow instructions. Wither a novice in the kitchen or an experienced family cook, Cake Magic will be the cookbook of choice when planning deserts for all manner of family meals and celebratory events.

This book has good, simple, and fast recipes. The book also has lots of color pictures so you can see what the desert will look like. I especially like the Butter Pecan Banana Cake on page 22. But don't be afraid to experiment some on the recipes. For example on the Butter Pecan Banana Cake I like to use a Butter Pecan cake mix, a mix of walnuts and pecans, and whipped vanilla frosting.

        5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-05-16

This book has some really great recipes and are really easy. I never cook and made a batch of cookies from a recipe in this book. My husband was in shock and is already requesting more cookies. Our friends loved them as well. This book was well worth the money.
