I am still looking for a really good complete carb counter for home cooking. Because I would use it mostly at home, I am not so concerned with the size, but more with the ease of use (meaning that I can find the info I want quickly) and having a large variety of the basic forms of foods listed.

So far I find the The Protein Power Lifeplan Gram Counter to be the easiest book of its kind to use.

Also, there are even not-so-common varieties of fruits, vegetables, and nuts listed. In my ideal book I would like more, especially in more forms and quantities, though this is good here for a small book.

One good aspect is that in addition to carb counts the Eads book lists Omega 6 & 3 values, and has special, easily found, pages on particularly desirable foods (such as high vitamin C, magnesium, E, and biggest bang for the buck foods). I appreciate those extras when planning meals ahead, including deciding what to buy at the grocery store.

5 out of 5 stars Beats the Atkins Version.......2003-12-15

Although the Eades take the liberty of removing the fiber column from the Nuts section (carbs are removed from Meat, but that's a no-brainer), this book(let) has replaced my Atkins gram counter as the first reference I check. It has five times the number of listings (perhaps a little too redundant here, as they dumbed it down to list multiple portion sizes of the same items - duh, I can multiply by two) but, most importantly, it is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH BETTER ORGANIZED; major sections, not just the items within as in Atkins, are alphabetized. I always found it strange, in the Atkins pocketbook, that sections lacked logic sequence.

Both books are good, but THIS ONE is a Cadillac and Atkins is a Chevrolet (a Malibu, not a Corvette, with no disrepect to you Malibu owners out there).

That (above) was yesterday, but "What have you done for me today?" Well, sir (or madame), let me tell you: I'VE MADE IT!!!

This morning, I weighed-in at 160 POUNDS! THAT'S EXACTLY 100 POUNDS LOST SINCE JANUARY 27, 2003!! AND IT ALL STARTED, AFTER MY DOCTOR'S "PRESCRIPTION" TO DO THE ATKINS DIET, BY BUYING THE THREE-BOOK ATKINS SET LAST DECEMBER, RIGHT HERE ON AMAZON.COM. THANKS, DOC; THANKS, DR. ATKINS; THANKS, AMAZON.COM!!!

The Protein Power Lifeplan Gram Conter is designed to be a companion to the Protein Power Lifeplan book by the Eades. However, it can be useful with any low carb diet.

The book does not go into detail on the Eades diet, for that you would want to refer to one of their other books. This book is a simple resource, designed to make you aware of the carbohydrate, protein and fat counts in different food items.

Pull out this book and at your fingertips you have the counts of a variety of foods. The book has a numerous listings including Breads, Cereals and Grains; Dairy Products; Fish, Seafood and Shellfish; and more.

When carb count is given the ECC is used. The ECC or effective carb count is found by deducting the fiber from the total carbohydrate of a food item. Most nutrition books list the fiber and carb count separately. But for carb counters, the ECC is all you need to count. So this booklet saves you from doing the math. Very handy!

There are two drawbacks to the booklet. One is the size. Though it is smaller than a standard paperback, it's still larger, 6.75 x 4.05 than other pocketsized gram counters. This makes it bulkier to tote.

The major drawback though is the manner in which the Eades decided to list counts. For protein foods they do not list the carbohydrates. The Eades feel that since these foods are primarily protein, the carb count is too small to be concerned with. But this is not true. For many folks on a carbohydrate restricted diet, all carbs count.
If you are limited to say 20 grams of carbs per day, you will want to count the carbs in the eggs, seafood and other carbohydrate containing protein foods that you eat. It adds up. And if you go over, you may not achieve the health goals you are after.

Yes, the Eades book is handy to have for a quick reference, but my preference is for the Atkins gram counter which is smaller in size and lists net carb counts for all the foods, including protein.

I have found The Protein Counter very helpfull. I had a gastric bypass and need to get my protein in. I refer to this book all the time.

At first blush this thick paperback made me think every food in the world must be in it! And a lot of food is (after all, where could you find the nutrition count of muskrat?!). I love the listings of chicken, for example, by the part or by the weight. And there is nutrition information for a lot of fast food and other dining places, too, which is great. I also love that the nutrition counts just don't focus on protein, but give other nutrients, and also calories.

But just the day after I got the book I discovered two omissions that I think are rather significant: only one or two Boca products are listed (this is a textured soy protein). I wanted to make chili with Boca crumbles and to see what the protein counts were on other Boca products and most were not available. (Yes, I know I can look at the label after I purchase the product. Or stand in the store and compare.)

Another omission was anything from Red Lobster. It seems like it would be easy to obtain the information (from any major restaurant chain) and include it. I wanted to be prepared before I dined there, so I would know what some good choices were. Again, I can obtain the information by going to their website (I hope), but that defeats the purpose of having the book!

My husband needs to control the amount of protein he eats a day. This book is excellent for this purpose. It's easy to use and very complete. It also includes the calories and fat grams for all the items listed as well as brand name items and restaurant chain foods.

It was a good book... I follow a slightly different meal plan during the day (6 - 8 meals of 200 - 300 calories each) not exceeding my bodyweight in carbs, and consuming at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight, but still an excellent reference to track your diet.

This is the best reference guide for counting calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, and fiber that I have come across. Most nutritional counter books leave out at least one important category, but this one does not. Also, it provides as much infornmation as large, bulky books. It even includes important dietary information about burning calories and nutritional guidleines.

This, above all other books of this type, seems to have the best combination of information about foods generic & otherwise. I still am left to guess at some things. But, let's face it, if you have a piece of homemade chocolate cake, with chocolate buttercream frosting, you KNOW that the listing in a calorie counter will probably be lower than what you really consumed. Common sense, and an honest appraisal to what you're eating is necessary no matter what reference you use.

This is definately the best food counter I have ever seen. It is so easy to find everything with the alphabetical listings, and it is very thorough. Also, the diet plan is so easy to follow, I never knew it could be so simple to lose weight. It truly is fast and easy, yet safe and healthy following the USDA guidlines. No fad dieting or heavy exercise involoved. I love this book!!!!!!!!!!!

This is one of the best carb counters on the market. It is so easy to use, and lists every single food I have ever eaten, even the most popular restaurant foods. It is very well organized, making finding foods very quick. I just love the alphabetical listings instead of all those categories. I also found the foods to be listed in the serving size most commonly consumed. Plus there are additional serving size listings for items like flour and sugar that you would use in cooking/baking. I disagree with the bad reviews. For instance "potato" is right there, easy to find, in baked, boiled, etc. It lists the size of the potato in inches instead of saying 3 oz. Well how many of you have a scale with you to weigh your potato when you eat out? I would rather see the size, like 3 inch long by 2 inch round. Awesome book!

Although this is a handy book, it's not as helpful as I would have liked. It's a little hard to find items. I t would be better if items were grouped together a little differently. But I have used it a couple of times. If I could've looked through it before, I probably wouldn't have bought it.

This carb counter is terribly organized. Instead of listing foods alphabetically, she lists them by categories and includes items from restaurants (??) mixed inbetween so that you have to page through multiple listings to find your item. There are no categories or titles at the top of the pages so you never know where you are in the book. There is no index and the table of contents only has categories (beef, dairy, etc.). Really inconvenient. It takes so long to find anything that it's really frustrating. What a waste of money.

I am a machinist in Minnesota,alot of info for a small book. It was very informative,everything a person needed to know about low carbs.

The author mentioned, in an interview, what helped to complete the book. Kicking the coffee habit. Said drinking it clouded creativity. I agree too, and stopped completely a few weeks ago, with the help of a coffee replacement. It's called s o y f e e and I simply love it. Made from s o y that you brew just like coffee. I even like it better than the real stuff. Look for it at www.s oycoffee.com.

This book gave you all the carb and calorie amounts for all the dairy,fruit,meat,desserts,and veggies etc. Explained very good how to do the low carb diet,made it so easy that anyone could understand it. Thanks.

The pocket-sized book is very convenient -- easy to carry around and use. It provides a good guideline for protein grams, but as with most references of this nature, the listings can only be regarded as rough estimates. It does succeed at least in giving us an idea of which foods to gravitate toward if we are seeking high protein meal choices.

      Ms. Mitchell packs her book with fresh ideas. If you are looking for something new, this is it. Even if the title of the recipe suggests something that you have read before, rest assured that Ms. Mitchell has added something different and delicious to it.

      Anybody can create a tasty dish by drowning it in butter or melting lots of cheese over it. Many standard appetizers are unhealthy for this reason. Although Ms. Mitchells does use cheese from time to time, her recipes are not drowning under it. Don't get me wrong I love cheese as much as the next person but so often I have had to pass by the standard appetizer plate because it is full of cheese laden appetizers. Ms. Mitchell uses imaginative combinations of ingredients and spices and herbs to make her recipes stand out. This is also a great book if you are trying to get your family to eat more vegetables. Just increase the size or number of her appetizers and serve them as delicious vegetable side dishes. Wish I had more than five stars to assign to this book.

      We had some parties over the holidays and this book was a key resource for pulling out some creative, interesting dishes that everyone loved. Mushroom pate was a particular hit. The flavors are interesting but not weird, variety throughput the book is great. Most of our friends are meat eaters so it was fun to do an hor d'oeurve party where no one missed the meats. Highly recommended! It made it easier for me to enjoy the holidays! Great resource.

Divided into five chapters, the 144-page hardback covers Appetizer Basics, Light Bites, Mezzo Bites, Sizable Bites, and Sweet Bites, plus Paulette's tips and an appendix for vegan recipes. Most of the 70 plus recipes take just one page, and there are many accompanying color photographs to illustrate the presentation.

      Experienced teacher/author/T.V. host Mitchell takes the intimidation out of such taste experiences as Caramelized-Onion Fritatta With Chimichurri Sauce, combining Italian and Argentinean flavors, or Yam Croquettes With Tangerine-Sherry Sauce, or Five-Spice Diced Vegetables in Endive Leaves with Plum Sauce, or the cover feature, East Indian inspired Cumin Scented Potatoes in Filo Cups.
