The Best Diet Ever! No B.S - This WORKS!!!.......2007-09-28
I have tried, unsuccessfully, to lose weight for a decade. And when I say I had tried everything, I do mean everything. I eventually simply accepted that I would be a "fat chick" for the rest of my life. That is, until I had a medical and was told I was now officially a Type 2 diabetic. I was horrified! My sister, who had always been thin, had managed to lose her post-pregnancy pot-belly with this book, plus there was the incentive that it claimed to help stabilize blood sugar. With nothing to lose, except hopefully a few pounds, I went ahead and bought the book. Smartest money I ever spent.
The recipes were actually dead easy and absolutely delicious and within a short period of time, I understood the philosophy of what should and shouldn't be on my plate, even when eating out. Within 3 months I had lost 35 pounds! As if that wasn't enough to impress my doctor, blood tests also showed that my blood sugar was back in the normal range!
This is so much more than a 'diet'. It's a lifestyle change, and I found it incredibly easy. Dinner guests have been known to apologize for coming over for dinner and forcing me to break my diet. I smile and tell them that I'm not breaking my diet - everything they've just eaten is part of the Holford plan. None of them can believe I can eat like this and still lose weight!
If you've ever struggled to shed some weight, do yourself a favor. This is the only thing that has ever worked for me and it was easy! I'm still losing weight, I'm healthier and fitter and really feel as though I've been given a new lease on life!
Thorough in every way.......2006-03-26
The book has covered well the whole concept of why the low-glycemic load diet is a good choice & why the Adkins isn't, includes some interesting recipes, helpful suggestions for menus and a fairly comprehensive list of foods and their glycemic load. Includes studies showing how to get the most out of the regimen and recommends supplements that enhance its effectiveness as well. Altogether a very satisfactory book.
Book Description
The Glycemic Index (GI) is a highly acclaimed route to weight loss, but it has one big drawback: GI values don't take portion sizes into account. Glycemic Load (GL) values ajust the GI score for real-world portions and thus give a more accurate measure of the way carbohydrates affect the body.
For example, fresh fruit seems like a healthier dessert than a Snickers candy bar, but, in fact, the GI score for apricots is 57, while a Snickers is only 55. This happens because the GI score is computed based on a serving of apricots that is over 7 times the size of the candy bar. When adjusted to the real-world serving size, the candy bar has a GL of 31, while the apricot's GL value is only 4.
Using these more accurate and sensible GL scores, the Easy GL Diet Handbook offers a plan for healthy weight loss and reduced risk of diabetes that is easier to follow and includes numerous foods that the Atkins, South Beach and GI diets wrongly consider "off limits."
Book Description
Because the glycemic load (GL) system properly takes into account portion size, GL dieting is the easiest and most precise weight loss method that uses the powerful glycemic index (GI). The GL Cookbook and Diet Plan makes it even easier. The book offers a vast selection of GL-scored recipes so dieters can choose dishes they love while following a proven program for permanent weight loss without hunger. The GL Cookbook and Diet Plan includes easy-to-prepare recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as snacks and desserts. And thanks to the GL correction for portion size, many popular foods mistakenly banned in GI dieting are found in delicious recipes like Grilled Pears with Blue Cheese, Orange Pork Casserole with Sweet Potato and even Fresh Berry Brulee.
Book Description
If you’re sick of no-carb diets, or just looking for a healthy eating plan, then the GL Diet is for you. No more calculations, no calorie-counting and no more cravings for carbs – as long as you stick to foods that are low in GL, you can stay healthy and lose weight without having to go without. The GL Diet For Dummies explains the science behind the plan, helps you to incorporate GL into your everyday life and gives readers 80 recipes to try.

Not up to date with latest info.......2006-07-16
The authors may have some good suggestions about glycemic load but they are way off on some of their facts, such as a low carb diet can cause muscle loss. A University of Illinois study published in August 2005 issue of the Journal of Nutrition showed that the women who ate a low-carb, high-protein diet had more productive workouts by burning more fat and building more muscle mass than those who ate a low-protein, high-carb diet.
I gave it two stars for the meal suggestions but don't give up your low-carb lifestyle. Use this book with caution and only to "cheat" intelligently.
Book Description
This is not just another diet book. This is a way of life. Forget the high-protein and the faddy single-food diets. Here is a simple eating plan that will become a way of life, helping dieters to lose weight and feel healthier at the same time. The GL (Glycaemic Load) Diet is the next step on from the GI Diet. Unlike the GI Diet, however, it is not complicated and full of tables and calculations. It also takes into consideration portion size, helping to establish how much you can really eat of a particular food without gaining weight. Written by acclaimed nutritionist and dietitian Nigel Denby, this revolutionary book is ideal for all those who want to stop yo-yo dieting and lose weight permanently while still enjoying their food.

Disappointing - at best.......2006-09-19
First, do not let the 1 star sway your thinking about a low GL, on the contrary. The 1 star is our opinion of the "book", not of the "diet".
As to the "book" - We just purchased the GL Diet book, and I have to tell you how incredibly disappointed we were
We had done our research, been following a Low "GI" plan with good success, but found the GL to be a far better concept than simply a Low GI, so we were excited to purchase a book that would provide guidance as to HOW to follow a low GL lifestyle
I wish that were the case, but in the entire book there is but a passing reference to "Load", that being a highlighted bullet box on page 12 about having a daily load of under 80 vs. over 100
THAT WAS IT! 223 pages and dozens of recipes
and not one single mention of the "load" for any of the foods they suggested or the recipes they provided.....not one mention
How does a person KNOW if they are under 80 or over 100? ...beats me! Sorry, but you'll have to go elsewhere to get information like that, because you sure won't find it in this book.
Much of the book is admittedly helpful, in a general sense, but with no proof, no examples or reference tables to the GL of individual foods or recipes "disappointed" far more accurately describes our overall impression
Basically we feel we paid for a few recipes, and learned absolutely -0- more about the GL in foods than we already knew.
Ok, but not great.......2006-09-11
A decent intro into the concept of Glycemic load, but most of the book is really recipes. The diet part could be summed up in one sentence. Eat low GI foods witha daily GL of less than 80.
Great Book!!.......2005-09-14
This is a wonderfully concise book with a lot of helpful information. It is also very humorous and down to earth. It does a great job at explaining what glycemic load is and how to apply eating this way to our everyday lives. I recommend this book to everyone, whether or not weight loss is the goal, especially with the way we eat in the US.
More than just another fad diet.......2005-06-09
An English friend came to visit and bought the GL Diet book with her. After years of trying one diet after another it's made a real difference to me, I lost 26lbs and have more energy than ever and best of all I've been able to keep it going- I don't even feel like I'm on a diet- it just become a way of life. The Diet Freedom website is full of good tips and ideas and the authors always respond to your questions. It's like having your own personal support network on line!

Forget Atkins and Southbeach, this is better.......2005-06-08
As a man I normally find diet books boring and preachy but this is a refreshing change... And the authors have a sense of humour! 30 pounds down and 7 to go I can highly recommend it after yo-yoing up and down on the Atkins diet and feeling deprived and tired most of the time I can now eat plenty of fruit and even bread and still lose weight. My wife says I am a new man! It is the best diet book I have found in my long history of being overweight.
Customer Reviews:
Another brilliant book from the Diet Freedom team.......2006-07-03
This is a GREAT cookbook. It is simple, easy and delicious and stands both alone and as a great companion to the previous books from the Diet Freedom (.co.uk) team. I found their first book about 18 months ago now, and have been hooked since. I have lost 76lbs (just over 5 stone, or about 35kgs - apologies for any bad math there!) and feel like a $million!! The cookbook gives cup sizes in the recipes so translates well to the US, and I have been asked by so many people to bring back copies of the books when in the UK (as I am a lot) that my baggage is HEAVY ... but I'm not!!
There is an online diet / healthy eating club that has been a great support to me as I have been finally shedding my unwanted weight, and I highly recommend this book, The 7-Day GL Diet and their first book The GL Diet (though you can do it with any one of them, but the cookbook has such GREAT recipes :o)!!) as well as the web club. Really supportive, no preaching or unrealistic goals. And how often can you actually access the authors of a book and have them answer your questions and chat to you online? I'm impressed! These guys clearly have been through the process themselves and really understand what it is like to have been constantly frustrated with dieting.
Also, it is easy to stick to, the food is great, and it's a really nice habit to get. You don't have to spend loads of money on fancy foods, you don't have to ask for weird things or go 'off menu' and noone need know you're dieting at all as there are hints and tips on how to be maintain as 'normal' a way of eating as possible. The only questions you'll get are 'you look INCREDIBLE, how did you do it' and then you may need an osteopath for your back as you lug copies of the books about!!!
As y'all can see I can't recommend it enough - I have tried every diet under the sun, and my health suffered hugely. Now I am lighter, with loads of energy, self esteem and a totally transformed life (and wardrobe, thank goodness!!)
Thanks Nigel, Tina, Deborah & Diet Freedom - A life changing series of books! x Claire

Even better than the last one - and that changed my life!!.......2005-12-21
OK - this is GREAT. Even better than the last, as it is more organised, and well laid out to help almost every type of busy life!
Still written in the warm inclusive style of the last, it contains more info, more recipes, bigger more comprehensive food lists, and also portion guidelines. The 7-day plans layout really helps with planning meals and snacks - from 10 minute or less 'fast & friendly' recipes / grab and run ideas through a brilliant vegetarian plan and onto the 'foodie friendly' plan for those of us who like to cook a bit more
It's still easier than the GI, that has not changed!! and I can safely say I won't be needing another diet again. Brilliant.
Many thanks to author Nigel and co for another major help to my life and conquest of food issues.
Happy happy happy - Claire x
PS - for us US based folk it is easily useable as it includes cup measurements as well as grams in the recipes.

With his 20 years of herbal expertise, Ron Teeguarden is the man celebrities rely on to improve their energy, put a glow on their skin, even renew their sexual vigor. Here he's written a fine and thorough introduction to the theory and art of tonic herbs. Anyone who's seen Woody Allen's Alice may be a bit leery, but there's more philosophy and science to these herbs than the hocus-pocus that the uninformed may associate them with. As Teeguarden points out, many of these herbs have been in use for more than 5,000 years.
He first covers the principles of Chinese health--yin and yang; the Three Treasures of life--qi (energy or vitality), jing (essence), and shen (spirit); the five main organ systems; and the Chinese view of the mind-body connection. These concepts may seem a bit out of this world for those accustomed to Western medicine ("Anger damages the liver"; "The kidneys control the skeleton"), but Teeguarden does an excellent job of explaining it all, even for folks who are complete novices when it comes to these Chinese health principles.
Then, using an organized, easy-to-use format and a handy one- to five-star system, he rates various herbs and classifies them according to their antioxidant qualities, ability to support the organs, and other health-promoting properties. Handy bonuses include the pharmaceutical name of each herb, its organ associations, and its taste. There are herbs for helping knee problems and boosting fertility, for improving immunity and reducing stress, even for promoting longevity. The most interesting of the bunch are the ones that you'd assume appeal to Hollywood folk: tonics to promote hair growth, clear the complexion, and prevent jet lag. Teeguarden then reveals the "recipes" or herb combinations for his tonics, some of which have amusing names like "Gecko Rockclimber," "Super Shou Wu Combination" (for fatigue or exhaustion), and "Yanlin's Beauty Formula." There are plenty of mail-order resources for those who can't find these herbs locally, along with a super chart with the Chinese symbols of each herb, the part used, and primary functions. Overall, this is a very helpful, user-friendly reference for anyone wanting to investigate the benefits that herbs and herbal tonics have to offer. --Erica Jorgensen

Amazing.......2006-02-21
This book is absolutely amazing. Very easy to read and covers the Chinese tonic herbs with great detail. This book is pefect for those who want to know anything about healing herbs.
Incomplete information.......2004-02-17
This book is a great description of what could be done, but the tools to do it are not herein. I was hoping this book was going to have more than just herb descriptions, alas it does not.
Some things that the Author forgot and which seem important: dosage for individual herbs (this is pretty important), chinese name of herbs (neither the pin-yin nor the symbol are given). And, in the formulas section (which was the main reason I bought the book) the formulas just list the herbs and not their proportions! WHAT!?! How unhelpful.
To know that herbs are in a formula is great, but it is not a formula without the proporation of ingredients. Although this book has great descriptions of the herbs and their uses, it lacks the implementational aspects which are critical to using the herbs! The truth is: this book is a marketing tool for the Author's herbal supplement line. Be careful...
Solution filled ..........2003-01-23
Western medicine is failing people at an alarming rate. The solutions can come from our neighbors to the east. This books answers alot of my questions. I had allways envied the health of the Chinese and Japanese people and wondered what their secrets were. After having tried the herbs and some of the teas , I now know. We can only hope this country will embrace these solutions to make this a better, more disciplined place to live. Thanks Ron...!
East finally meets West!.......2002-10-11
This book is a continuation on Mr. Teeguardens initial book "Chinese Tonic Herbs". Here again he manages to simplify the complex world of herbs for the layman. Passing on information rare at best within the herbalist communities. "Tonic Formula's" are common but not quite yet here in the west. I hope that with time, they will be as common place in American homes as Asparirn is today. If you are interested in learning a alternative to "post-medicine" care, and would actually like to prevent things from happening, this is your book. I have never read any book that has had such a profound effect upon my life. I can honestly say, without this book and the wisdom within, I would have been on the way out rather then finding life again!!!
Excellent!.......2002-07-11
Ron Teeguarden is a master herbalist with over 20 years of experience. In his easy-to-read book, Ron offers an introduction to the ancient philosophy of radiant health and provides an in-depth information about Chinese tonic herbs, many of which have been in use for over 5 000 years. Ron first covers the theory - principles of Yin and Yang, the Three Treasures of life, and the five main organ systems. Then he describes the individual herbs, complete with pictures and detailed descriptions of their properties, and includes herb combinations and formulas with their specific benefits. The book also includes mail-order resources. Overall, it is a very user-friendly reference, highly recommended to anyone interested in learning how to improve your overall health, increase energy and promote longevity.
I have a personal experience with Ron's herbs - I visited his store in Santa Monica, and based on an advice from his herbalists started using some of his adaptogenic herbs that are described in the book. I was very impressed how quickly I noticed significant improvement in my overall energy and mood! I can't recommend it enough!

The only Chinese herb book you will ever need.............2007-05-22
I found this gem in a used bookstore around fifteen years ago, and learned
enough about Chinese tonic herbs to change my life, energy levels and how I think about health completely.
This book is written in a comfortable, accessible style, yet is concise and informative as well. It is also perfect as a herbal reference.
For me, the section on prepared tonics has been invaluable.
A previous reviewer is correct about the supplier list being out of date, but a company called East Earth Tradewinds has everything you will require to concoct Mr. Teeguarden's formulas, as well as most of the patent medicines and
prepared tonics listed in the book.If you are interested in looking into the wonderful and amazing herbs of China, buy this book. It is truly excellent, and one you will be referring to for the rest of your life.
A classic book on Superior Tonic Herbalism.......2004-06-22
What sets this book apart from other books on Chinese herbal medicine is its philosophy of using "superior tonic herbs" to improve the quality of one's life and health. This book is not about treating disease, but rather about achieving radiant health from a Taoist perspective.
This is Ron Teeguarden's first of several books on the subject of Chinese Medicine and in my opinion is a classic. (Note, I have not read his latest book The Ancient Wisdom of the Chinese Tonic Herbs.)
Having formally studied Traditional Chinese Medicine for two years and Ayurvedic medicine for two years I can unequivocally state this is the book to start learning practical do it yourself Chinese herbalism for increased energy, creativity, spiritual growth and happiness. It contains many useful and effective herbal formulas that would not be otherwise accessible to the non-professional. If you want to learn Chinese medicine for the treatment of disease this is not the book to get, rather the focus is on tonic herbs and their correct application. (While tonic herbs are widely used for deficiency diseases in Chinese Medicine, not enough herbs, formulas and theory are given in this book for treating complex deficiency conditions/diseases.) This book shows one how to gradually work towards radiant health through the application of Superior Tonic Herbalism. All the practical and theoretical knowledge needed is covered.
The cost of the herbs involved ranges from $.50 / ounce to $200 / ounce (retail). To seriously put to use the knowledge contained in this book would require having a selection of about 20-35 herbs. Though one could start out with as few as one to three herbs. The primary emphasis is on learning how to mix and cook the bulk tonic herbs into teas (decoctions). These teas range in taste from sweet, sour, and pungent to bitter. (There is one chapter devoted to the use of commercially prepared tonics, but it is not the major focus of the book.) The companies listed to order herbs from are now out of date, but a search of the Internet will reveal more current sources.
Traditionally the tonic herbs are divided into four categories: 1) chi (qi) tonics, 2) yang tonics, 3) yin tonics and 4) blood tonics. Ron Teeguardian covers three additional categories: 1) chi moving/regulating herbs, 2) blood moving/regulating herbs and 3) organ-meridian tonics. The book covers 35 herbs in detail, including buying tips and a black and white photo of each herb.
The section on ginseng (a chi tonic) is very informative and contains insights and perspectives not readily found elsewhere. Also covered in detail is dang shen (Codonopsis pilosula) a safe and low cost ginseng substitute. The coverage of some the "minor" tonic herbs is unique as the longevity properties of these "minor" tonic herbs are usually overlooked or ignored by most texts on the subject.
The theory section is kept simple, but detailed enough to be practically useful. While Chinese Tonic Herbs discusses modern scientific research on Chinese herbs, the formulas and theory is geared toward building up the three Taoist treasures: shen (spirit), jing (essence, refined reproductive energy) and chi (life-force/energy). When these three treasures are built up a person will have a strong reserve of adaptogenic energy to effectively deal with stress and changing life conditions.
The book has a few flaws. The taxonomy is a little weak as some of the scientific names used are outdated. Perhaps not enough information is given on how to correctly distinguish between yin, yang, chi and blood deficiency conditions. Also, not enough contraindications are given for each of the herbs discussed. While superior tonic herbs are generally very safe and non toxic, it is possible to use them incorrectly and put one's body into a deeper state of imbalance. Dosage information is somewhat weak, but sufficiently covered if one studies the book carefully. Usually only relative proportions for each herb are given for a formula.
Ron Teeguarden was personally trained by a Taoist master visiting from Korea in the 1970s. His book is part of a real living tradition of Superior Tonic Herbalism.
While several volumes would be needed to do Superior Tonic Herbalism justice this book is an excellent beginning.
(A useful adjunct book is "Yoga of Herbs" by Frawley and Lad, which covers Western, Ayurvedic and some Chinese herbs from an Ayurvedic perspective. Yoga of Herbs focuses both on the treatment of disease and tonification and rejuvenation. It covers some of the spiritual aspects of herbs according to the Ayurvedic perspective. Both Yoga of Herbs and Chinese Tonic Herbs embrace the life energy model of herbalism as opposed to the more modern pharmacological model.)
The real secret of tonic herbalism is doing it carefully (e.g., don't over do it) and steadily every day -- this book will definitely help one get started on this path, by both the knowledge contained within, and the truly inspiring stories and passion of the author. Superior Tonic Herbalism is Ron Teeguardian's passion and mission in life and this book follows from this.
The only Chinese Herbal book that really EXPLAINS things.......2001-03-27
I have several good books on Chinese herbs, but Teeguarden's book is the only one with full, complete explanations. He includes:
1. Section on the five elements (water-wood-fire-metal-earth), what "cool" and "warm" and "yin" and "yang" mean.
2. Section describing the most-used and important herbs like Ginseng and Dong Kwai, Ma Huang and many others. This section includes photos of the herb shown as they are sold in herb shops, tips on getting the best herbs, the Chinese name (and Korean, sometimes) The names are both Romanized and in Chinese characters, with the Latin name, and the active chemical components and their effects.
3. Formulae for herb tonics, because Chinese herbs are not used alone but in combination (and the reasoning behind the combination.)
4. Philosophy of Chinese medicine for health (prevention versus cure) and much more.
The book is very readable, too. While I very much like other books I own, this one is such a classic, I consider it a MUST-HAVE if you are interested at all in Chinese medicine and definitely the first one you should own.
A must-read...don't miss the last chapter.......1998-10-09
I found Ron Teeguarden's new book "Radiant Health" to be the most easily understood and comprehensive book on the subject that I've ever read. Many Westerners, during the last several decades, have become aware of the benefits of Chinese Medicine, specifically acupuncture. This book brings to light the extremely effective system of Chinese Herbal Tonics, which is an ancient tradition of promoting and maintaining a state of radiant health rather than treating disease once it has developed. Considering the cost of health care to both individuals and society at large, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in maintaining their own personal health or providing for the health of society. Not only does Ron Teeguarden explain in detail the properties and uses of each of the tonic herbs but he has a rare talent of making very complex and profound concepts easily understandable to the layman. One suggestion that I would make is not to miss the last chapter called "Six Lessons The Tonic Herbs Have Taught Me." Some readers might get bogged down in the middle of the book where each of the herbs is described. If that happens to you, just skip to the last chapter and then pick up the book, from time to time, to read about an herb or two. The last chapter was my favorite because it beautifully expresses the degree to which the tonic herbs can transform life and raise it to a pinacle that is the birthright of every human being.
No more snake oil........1997-05-16
Ron has certainly opened the eyes of those of us who wish to avoid the chemicals of modern day medicine. This book will guide you to the Chinese herb that is right for you and your health. While he makes no claims of cures, I can attest to the renewed energy and vitality I have attained from his advice and knowledge

Chinese Herbal Tonics.......2006-01-20
The Chinese have been using herbs continuously for over three thousand years and have developed the most sophisticated herbal system the world has ever known. Among the thousands of herbs that the Chinese have described, there exists a relatively small group of herbs known as the "superior herbs". These herbs are said to enhance life without side effects. In fact, they are super nutrients that are left out of the diet because they are not as easily edible as our usual table fare. The superior herbs are not medicinal herbs -- they are tonics that have been found over many centuries to help develop radiant health.
Chinese Herbal Tonics is a guidebook to a major healthcare system. It describes all the "superior herbs" also known as the "tonics," and goes even further by describing the greatest Chineses tonic formulations that are available to the American consumer today. This guidebook describes the classical uses of these great tonic herbs and formulations and even details what brands are currently the best. This is extremely important because quality is of the utmost importance, and because of the large number of lower quality companies and products currently in the marketplace. -- from books' back cover
