If you know you swell up after bee stings, you avoid bees. If you know a close encounter with poison ivy will leave you itching and scratching for a week, you keep your eyes open for three-leafed plants. But, according to The False Fat Diet, many of us spend our entire lives eating foods that "don't agree with us," and as a result carry around extra pounds, put up with allergies, and go through life looking older and feeling less energetic than we should. Of course, the hook here is weight loss. If you eliminate the foods that make you gassy and bloated, you can probably drop pounds instantly--up to 10 pounds of "false fat" in a week, Elson Haas says--and then keep dropping weight in subsequent weeks and months, the real fat, all without feeling hungry or deprived.
Haas offers two ways to figure out if you've got food sensitivities: a medical blood test or an elimination diet, in which you cut out certain foods for a while, then gradually reintroduce them to see if they're the ones causing the problems. (The usual suspects: dairy, wheat, corn, sugar, eggs, soy, peanuts.) The False Fat Diet offers detailed instructions on how to eliminate each of these foods, and also offers ideas about supplements to take and other strategies to deal with the strangeness of not eating what are probably your favorite foods.
Although the basic idea behind The False Fat Diet is counterintuitive--that the foods you like and crave the most are causing you the most severe physical problems--the potential benefits are enormous. Haas and Cameron Stauth tell numerous stories of patients (including Stauth and his sister) who lost weight instantly, looked younger, and felt better by following the diet that makes the most sense for them. --Lou Schuler
Book Description
It's a fact: not all weight is really fat. Much of being overweight is caused by allergy-like food reactions. This "false fat" is easy to put on, but it can be hard to take off. Now you can do it--this week--with the revolutionary False Fat Diet. In just a few days, you can lose 5-10 pounds--and 10-20 pounds within two or three weeks. This healthy, practical 21-day nutritional program includes
- Identifying which foods you react to--and replacing them with the right foods for your body chemistry
- False Fat Week--the amazing 7-day period when your swelling and puffiness subside, as you lose ten pounds
- The Balance Program--a personally customized diet that returns your metabolism to normal, and takes pounds off steadily as you reach your ideal weight
- Delicious, easy-to-prepare, reaction-free recipes, created with popular, health-conscious chefs, that don't drastically cut calories the way other diets do

False Fat Diet.......2007-09-28
I have tried several sensible "healthy eating" diets such as Weight Watchers and the South Beach Diet, but it was very difficult for me to stick to any type of regime due to my frequent food cravings. I always start a diet with enthusiasm, resolve, and good intentions, but then fall off the wagon as soon as I consume any sugar, chocolate, chips or diet "no-no foods." Blame it on my compulsiveness and "all or nothing" mentality!!
However, after having implemented some of Dr. Haas' basic principles, such as eliminating the infamous "sensitive seven" foods, I feel I can resit my cravings and not give up on my healthy eating endeavor. I have been on the FFD for 7 days, and feel less bloated, more in control of my appetite, and less drawn to both sugary and starchy foods.
Dr. Haas also states that if we have failed on our previous diet attempts, it's not because we have poor discipline and will power; it is because our body chemistry has been altered by all the toxins we ingest and breathe. Therefore, we are biochemically less able to resist cravings and more likely to have withdrawals from our favorite, often "reactive", foods.

I'm 22 years old and I have been about 10 to 15 pounds overweight since I was 10. I have been counting my calories, eating healthy, and exercising for 12 years without any results. I always was told that I simply have a body type that looks fatter and that I have a slow metabolism. I have tested negative for diabetes, thyroid problems, and other weight-gaining problems. This was all very discouraging to me because I always felt drained and bloated, and I thought nothing could help me.
I found out about Dr. Haas in a natural healing book. I did his detox program for only five days and by the second day I had lost several pounds of water weight, 4 inches off of my hips, 3 off of my waist, and 3 off my bust! I went from a size 12 to an 8. This is the thinnest I've ever been and I feel great!
I am right in the middle of the 21-day False Fat diet and am continually doing better. My sugar and starch cravings are fading (surprising, since I work in a bakery) I didn't do the juice fast because of blood sugar problems and anemia(caused probably by food allergies), but the results are still great! Also, Dr. Haas recommends a whole heap of herbal, mineral, and vitamin supplements, which are very expensive, so I only got the basics. I'm excited to find out what my food allergies are so I can cut them out and get into the best shape of my life, for the rest of my life!
I recommend this book to everyone, thin or not. I think that food allergies are a huge problem in our society, and even healthy-looking people may have problems with certain foods. Most food in stores contain all of the sensitive 7! If you do this diet, be aware that you will absolutely have to cook all of your meals and try a lot of foods that you've probably never heard of. This takes a lot of time, devotion, planning, and commitment, but it's well worth it. This will be the last diet you'll ever do, forget South Beach, Nutrisystem, and all that other temporary junk! Get healthy!
WOW!!! I lost 20lbs in 4 weeks.......2006-10-14
I have been about 25 lbs overweight for about 10 years. I was exercising and eating sensibly but still no budge on the pudge. This diet is amazing. I didn't detox but I stopped eating dairy and lost 10 lbs almost immediately! Then I cut wheat and lost the other 10 lbs. This book will help you loose weight and begin a new way of understanding your body. My doctor recommended this book and I can't wait for my 1 year checkup to show him the progress. I would give 5 stars but I thought some of the information in the book was over the top....I'm sure it works though. Thanks for reading and Good Luck with your weight loss.

Unlike many of the reviewers here, I came to this book after being diagnosed with food allergies. Having struggled with skin rashes, mouth sores, constipation, bloating, cramping, diareha, mood swings, depression, shortness of breath, lethargy, aching joints and a multitude of other symptoms, I finally found a food allergy specialist who believed that you could have more than one or two true food allergies. Within 15 mins, he had tested me for 72 different foods and discovered I was allergic to 33 of them. Basically, everything that we all eat every day. Within one week of eliminating those foods, my symptoms stopped and within three weeks, I had lost 15 pounds. Mind you, I was not overweight in the least but due to the water retention and inflammation, I was packing an extra 15 pounds of water weight and several inches around my ankles, thighs, waist, arms and in my face! Also, ladies, staying away from allergenic foods and incorporating moderate exercise will all but eliminate cellulite as well. Afterall, cellulite is not just fat but also toxins trapped under the skin - eliminate the toxins and you eliminate the dipples. In short, everything that Dr. Haas promises (quick weight reduction and continued accelerated fat loss) is exactly what will happen if food allergies are the culprit involved in your weight issues. Not only do I have personal experience with this but my allergist can attest that it is the same story with all of his patients! It may seem all but impossible at first to eliminate these common foods but after the first week, your cravings diminish quickly and are all but gone by week three. I believe food allergy is a hidden epidemic in America and is the cause of the rise in obesity in adults as well as children.

Book Description
In deference to its cure-all effects, chicken soup is warmly referred to as "Jewish penicillin." It is not merely the delicious golden elixir itself, but, perhaps even more so, the love that is stirred into every potful that produces these miraculous results. Storytelling is a major component of Jewish tradition and this book honors that heritage with stories that celebrate the joys, sorrows and challenges of being Jewish. Some stories are timely and others are timeless, yet all are filled with heart-and, of course, love. Discover the invincible power of love in the pages of this book-love of family, love of tradition, love of God. For Jews and non-Jews alike, this collection is sure to capture hearts.

Chicken Soup, No Matzo Balls.......2007-07-05
Every culture has a version of chicken soup. So what makes "Chicken Soup" so Jewish? Matzo balls. The uniquely Jewish ingredient in Jewish Chicken Soup is the matzo balls.
This book is a lot like chicken soup without the matzo balls. Is it about Jews? Yes. Does it have a Jewish soul? No. I can't point to any specific thing in the book or about the book that made me feel it wasn't Jewish. Just like when I eat my Mexican-American neighbor's chicken soup I can't point to anything that is specifically not Jewish about it, but it is not Jewish chicken soup. I mean a chicken is a chicken is a chicken, right? But it is not. Maybe it is the fried tortillas floating on top instead of the matzo balls or the presence of cilantro instead of celery, I do not know. But it definitely is not Jewish. There is something missing and that is how I felt after reading this book. There was some Jewish element missing.
Of course there were all of the correct ingredients, the book has a number of stories of Holocaust survivors finding lost family members in the most unusal ways. It has a number of stories about people finding faith, the will to go on and all of the other things you find in a _Chicken Soup for the Soul_ book. But it just wasn't Jewish feeling.
Instead of this book, I highly recommend reading the collections of Shlomo Carelbach stories if you are looking for something Jewish and uplifting. The book I most highly recommend is: _Reb Shlomele: The Life and World of Shlomo Carlebach_ (Hardcover) by Dr. Gabriel A. Sivan (Translator), M. Brandwein (Author). After that I recommend Holy Brother: Inspiring Stories and Enchanted Tales about Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach Yitti H Mandelbaum personally knew Reb Shlomo and her books about him are fabulous.
Quite uplifting........2006-01-04
I read this book at a rather appropriate time, seeing as I'm writing my thesis regarding the treatment of Jews in post World War II Los Angeles this coming semester. I found the stories sweet and uplifting, or moving and intriguing. It's a quick read, and an enjoyable one. Some stories were a bit schmaltzy, a little too saccharine, but for the most part they were quite good.
A heartwarming collection of tales to soothe the soul and lift the spirit........2005-11-21
"Chicken Soup for the Jewish Soul" is almost redundant; Jewish chicken soup was the original cure-all in the first place! This collection of 101 stories is divided into several thematic units that demonstrate the power and beauty of Judaism in the synagogue and in our daily lives. Sections include To Life, Being A Jew, On Love and Kindness, Our Common Humanity, Family, The Holocaust, Insights and Lessons, Eclectic Wisdom, and a glossary of Hebrew and Yiddish terms.
Several well-known names are represented (Anne Frank, Kirk Douglas, Golda Meir, Mayor Ed Koch), but every story is a gem, a remembrance of a feisty bubbe, of families reunited after the war, of Nazi persecution and surviving the death camps, of Soviet repression and the dangers and joys of living in Israel. The common thread is the strength of faith and prayer in the face of adversity, and nowhere is the beauty of davening more clearly illustrated than in "My Five-Year-Old Spiritual Teacher" by Rabbi Devora Bartnoff. Her son Lior has Down's Syndrome, but lives for Shabbos and joining in prayer at the synagogue. "I am in awe of such a moment of Kedusha, of pure holiness. What Lior is experiencing at that moment is a true connection with the Divine." Rabbi Bartnoff, though weary from chemotherapy, is buoyed by Lior's absolute faith (she passed away in 1997 at the age of forty-four).
Besides the handy Hebrew/Yiddish glossary, there are also several pages devoted to supporting Jewish causes (Hadassah, National Yiddish Book Center) and descriptions of the individual authors and their works. An uplifting collection of grace, mystery, and humor that captures the joy and mingled sadness of all things Jewish.
Cried the entire time!.......2005-07-12
This is a really heartwarming book. The stories here really get to you. My husband is almost done reading, it and he thinks the stories are amaizing. We recommend it to everyone.
It really IS like Jewish penicillin!.......2004-03-10
The Larry Trapp story is amazing, and I was deeply touched by the Billings, Montana, the "Rabbi's blessing," and the Ed Koch/Mother Teresa stories and the Anne Frank excerpt. These are stories about the power of human kindness and about the value ALL people have to God. I am not Jewish myself, but I loved this book. It shows that (in the words of Voltaire) "prejudice is the reason of fools."

Barbara Kafka, author of such important and popular books as Roasting: A Simple Art, Party Food, and Microwave Gourmet, doesn't just speak with the voice of authority when she addresses anything that might have to do with food, she speaks with the voice of the woman who invented fire. It's right there, that voice, deep in her soul. And it calls out loud and clear in page after page of what has to be one of her best books ever.
Soup is the blood in Barbara Kafka's veins. "When I am tired and want comfort," she writes, "or when I want to share happiness, or just when I want something full of flavor, my first desire is soup." It is through soup that Kafka embraces the generations of her family, her husband's family, the families of her children's spouses. It is through soup that Kafka embraces the world. "Every culture has its soups and the soups may be said to represent them."
The book begins with a brief overview of technique ("How to Boil Water"), then drops right into a section she calls "Family Soups." Here are the soups Kafka identifies with her grandmother and mother (Chicken Soup and Split-Pea Soup, respectively), her husband (Winter Duck Soup), her own youth (Gazpacho), her adult nature (Veal Soup with Fennel), as well as soups linked to other members of her family. It's as personal as looking through the Kafka family photo album with the author at your side.
From that base, Ms. Kafka moves on to the world of soups, be they of a vegetable nature, or those that rely on various birds or meats or seafoods. She winds down with stocks, noodles, dumplings, sauces, and the like.
It's a masterful production: simple, clear, uncluttered, direct, and thorough. It's a book that opens the senses to the world much as the steam rising off a bowl of lovingly made soup. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
"Dora, my maternal grandmother," writes Barbara Kafka in her new book, "started the soup tradition that means most to me, which is odd as she was, by all accounts, a bad cook....I hope I am a better cook, and my life has certainly been easier, but I learned from her that a pot of soup is warmth and welcome for family and friends alike."
In this stunningly rich and wide-ranging book, Barbara Kafka gives the food we love perhaps best in the world a new vitality. Though the subject is so familiar to us all, her approach is totally original, just as it was in her award-winning Roasting: A Simple Art and Microwave Gourmet. In a wonderfully diverse collection of nearly three hundred recipes from all over the world--some traditional, some newly minted, many so simple they require no cooking at all, each of them very much a part of our spiritual and emotional lives--she offers up a lifetime worth of pleasure:
icy soups for steamy days (ceviche soup with ginger) and hot soups for cold days (winter duck soup)
rustic potages (great green soup) and elegant consommes (beef madrilene)
simple soups to start (Moroccan tomato) and complex soups that make a meal (beef short ribs in a pot)
fifteen-minute specials (mussels and tomato soup) and those that simmer all day (pot-au-feu)
a magical garlic broth, among other vegetable broths and bases, gives vegetarians hundreds of recipes to enjoy
As always, Barbara's intelligence and talent for innovation have resulted in a vast body of ideas to make your life in the kitchen easy and interesting. Nearly thirty stocks are offered, as well as dozens of ways to use seasonal produce to cook and freeze soup bases for year-round fresh taste. You'll find cooking times for everything from dumplings and piroshki to noodles and pasta, simmering times for every possible cut of meat, and yields and blanching times for dozens of vegetables. There are easy-to-follow charts to answer every cooking question.
And then there's Barbara's "memory pieces." Woven through the recipes, they form a book within a book, one family's personal and culinary history. They're fascinating and warming and enriching on their own. They also remind us why soup is a vital part of our lives. And why Barbara Kafka is a vital part of our cooking experience.

One of My Favorite Cookbooks.......2005-12-09
Barbara does a great job of pulling together a wide variety of soups that have never failed me from the simple country tomato, to the hearty beef stew to the hot and sour or the exotic Tom Ka Coconut Soup. The backstories and the basics lend to its completeness and character. This will be a staple in my cookbook library for life.
I like this book, shocked to see the negatives.......2002-06-26
I love to cook, and am an avid "Roaster", partly due to Kafka's roasting book. I have had great luck with this book, especially the recipe for bread soup, and with the bouliabase. There are few secrets, just use good fresh ingredients, and taylor the soups to suit your taste.
Burn this cookbook.......2002-04-02
I was suspicious of this woman when she wrote a food column for Vogue magazine and praised iceburg lettuce. Always willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt, I tried 4 recipes from this cookbook. They were appalling and even my dog Zeke, the most undiscriminating gourmande on the planet, wouldn't eat them.
(Good dog.)
OK.......2002-01-26
This cookbook is lovely to look at and has nice vignettes about the author and her love of soup. However, the recipes were not my cup of tea. Too many of them contained either fish of odd ingredients that I would choose to avoid (e.g., oxtail). As a result, I have made few of these recipes.
Save your money and buy a good novel........2000-10-18
Because Ms. Kafka was at Vogue for so long, I assumed (wrongly) that this book would be divine. I have made about 5 soups from this book, 4 of which my husband simply refused to eat. Even her basic stock recipes are insipid. Her little family anecdotes are maudlin, but with the advent of Martha Stewart Omniverous er, Omnimedia, and her magazine perfect life and self-congratulatory writing, maybe I'm a tad cynical. Life is "Duck Soup"-fun, easy, a piece of cake-when you can laugh at yourself and everything else. Swami Beyondananda, author of Driving Your Own Karma does away with all earnestness and doctrine of whatever stripe as he elaborates on his punny theories. The self-proclaimed leader of a FUNdamentalist Revival (accent on FUN), the Swami advocates putting levity over gravity, and offers seven ways to prevent Truth Decay. According to the Swami, the reason we are put in the material world is to get more material, and Nonjudgment Day is at hand. Although for most of us life is hardly easy, and can easily be hard, Swami says life can easily be easy and hardly be hard at all. "Am I serious?" asks the Swami. "Absolutely not!"
Customer Reviews:
"Duck Soup" beats a Stew anytine!.......2006-11-18
I read this book a while back, but today I was reminded of its significance. When the drive-thru at my favorite fast-food restaurant was swamped with cars, when a large SUV drove the wrong way through the narrow driveway and when I ended up behind a boat festooned with a grass skirt, I remembered Steve's counsel that our purpose for being in this life is to gather comedy "material." My friend and I drove away laughing so hard we made strange snorting noises, could hardly catch our breath, and had to peek through our eyelashes to even see where we were going. If you do not think life is all that funny, then I recommend this book. Perhaps your "jestive system" is clogged and in need of treatment. You can find the needed remedy in "Duck Soup for the Soul."
Quack up with the Swami!.......2000-05-09
With just the right humorous spice and some very ducky spiritual stock, Swami Beyondananda (aka Steve Bhaerman) mixes up a batch of healing stories that build strong funny bones and remind us to increase the laugh-force on the planet. Each chapter is as funny as it is wise, as you can intuit from the Swami's advice that we can alter our own reality (and the reality of those around us) by Making Fools of ourselves, remembering to Tell-A-Vision, being Esteem-Generators, and Committing Random Acts of Comedy and Beautiful Nonsense. Have fun learning how to drive your own Karma... while making sure you don't run over anyone else's Dogma!
