5 out of 5 stars Best Homey Vegetarian Cookbook.......2006-03-23

I have owned this cookbook for about 20 years and ate at Cabbagetown Cafe many times as a student at Cornell. It was a shame that the restaurant is now closed. The recipes are easy, healthy and delicious. This is my favorite vegetarian cookbook. I love the recipe for vegetarian lasagna because you do not have to cook the noodles; they cook "themselves" right in the sauce!

4 out of 5 stars Some of the best of American Hippie Cooking.......2006-01-31

I love American Hippie food. I don't at all mean that as an insult. It's homey, nutricious, delicious and often surprising and fun cuisine.

Some of my favorite recipes are here: Vegetable Lo Mein, the enchilada recipes, and lentil soup.

Definitely an addition to your cookbook shelf, health and happiness.

5 out of 5 stars Julie Rules.......2004-07-11

I found this book upon moving into a Providence apartment in 1990, started cooking, and people have been asking me for the recipes ever since.
This vegetarian, whole food cookbook is a must-have in every kitchen, including those of hardcore carnivores like myself.

Almost all of the recipes will work for the novice cook, and the result will please the most refined palates. There are too many great recipes to mention, but here are some that you must try:

1. Spinach lasagne with eggplant: The textures here wow the most varicious meat-lovers, who never seem to realize it is a non-meat recipe. Add to this Julie's efficient prep methods, and you have an all-time classic.
2. Quiche: This is an outstanding cook-ahead meal for any gathering, and Julie gives you the most tantalizing varieties: Brocolli/Bleu Cheese, Blushing Tomato (w/ capers and Rosemary), Potato Sour Cream. They are all outstanding.
3. Chickpeas: There are two recipes in here that do amazing things with the humble garbanzo. Serve these spicy dishes over rice, and accept the compliments of admiring diners.

5 out of 5 stars Great eats.......2002-12-25

A great restaurant and a great cookbook. I used to live upstairs from this restaurant, and the incredible aromas would always tempt us downstairs for the soup of the day. I've heard that the restaurant is closed now, but the recipes are still great. They are simple, easy to follow and always delicious.

4 out of 5 stars A useful guide for carnival glass.......2004-05-06

I had no problem finding any of the patterns that I was looking for. Having only been collecting carnival glass for about three years, I found the book to be informative and a great referance to fall back on if I was unsure of something. This book was one of the best purchases that I have made when it comes to referance books.

        1 out of 5 stars Confusing!!.......2003-09-29

        4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2001-12-02

I loved this book. It is the best book I have found to use in identifying carnival glass. The pictures are crystal clear, and the number of items included is astonishing. However, the greatest weakness is that the book does not list the year(s) that any of the items were made. That is a huge weakness. You may find out who the manufacturer is and the name of the item, but not knowing the date leaves a huge gap in information.

4 out of 5 stars This is an Encyclopedia and more........2001-07-27

This book is what it says and encyclopedia. I t was not designed for any group beginner or expert. It is well organized and packed with descriptive color pictures. This encyclopedia tell how when and Where the glass was made and more important shows patterns to help you recognize what you are looking at. The "Marks" section is worth it in its self.

My two favorite objects in the book (of which I am not sure I would want in my house) are:

        Purple Pickle Paperweight:

"Of All the oddities I've come across in carnival glass, this is probably the oddball of all time."

        Scottie

"Surly there isn't a collector that hasn't seen these in the flea market in Scotties, poodles, dear, duckies, or rabbits. They are all covers powder jars, all marigolds, and made near the end of the carnival glass heyday. Still the coloring is usually respectable, and they are cute little things"

Personally I do not think they are so cute; but my wife has the "Dear" that was handed down from her mother.

Again this book is worth just being aware of the diversity in Carnival Glass

          Book Description

The creation of classic American Carnival Glass took the world by storm in the early 1900s, bringing color and beauty in the form of iridized glass to homes everywhere. Carnivals iridescent, rainbow colored appearance was achieved by spraying the still hot glass with a liquid solution of various metallic salts. A short while later, Europe, South America, and India (among others) began making Carnival--and the success story was repeated. Featuring over 400 outstanding color photographs and 130 black and white illustrations, this thoroughly researched and visually exciting book covers more than one hundred years in the history of Carnival Glass--from classic American Carnival right up to the present day. A multitude of previously unknown patterns are assigned to their manufacturers. Many surprises are in store, as new producers of European Carnival are fully documented and illustrated: Sowerby, Brockwitz, Eda, Rindskopf, and Jain, to name just a few. Detailed information on over 500 Carnival patterns--plus shapes, colors, and values--is all included, along with a bibliography, three appendices, and an index.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent reference book.......2005-12-21

This is un important and complete carnival glass book.
Really first class information, and a good table of prices.

          3 out of 5 stars Fairly nice book...with a few flaws.......2002-09-23

The color pictures are numerous and nice....the price guide in the back is a pain...it would be much better if the prices were on the same page as the picture. I think the price paid for this book was more than fair.

3 out of 5 stars Colorful Pictures Do Not Make A Great Book.......2001-08-18

Granted, the color pictures do make for a nice book, however, I found many of the pictures to not show the pattern clearly. Sometimes it was the item they chose to show that caused the difficulty--patterns on cups, candlesticks, and vases do not give me what I need to see to verify the pattern on a bowl. I believe a bit more variety of pictures is need for many of the patterns. I would rather see a picture of a collection with a clear detail of the pattern. As far as the price guide goes, at first I found it inconvenient to flip to the back of the book to check the prices, but I got used to it and put up with it. Carnival glass resources are few, so this book is out there, but in my opinion, it's not a great book or a good value.
