5 out of 5 stars Strong Study for Willing Hearts.......2007-07-05

As a Bible study leader in women's ministry this is the kind of book/resource we pray God will lead us to. We are using it for summer Bible study and the impact has been very powerful. Paula Rinehart encourages us to fearlessly explore the places we have been in our lives and discover how God can use our experiences to impact positive change and grow closer to God. Paula teaches us to understand that God can, and will, use sorrow and suffering to make us Strong Women with Soft Hearts. The resources, quotes and study questions are fantastic. Through our tears, smiles and laughter our study group is richly blessed by Paula's words.

5 out of 5 stars All in the Title.......2006-09-23

The title says it all -- it's what first caught my eye and it's what continues to draw me back to the book. I've enjoyed it so much that I've been giving a copy of it to many of my female friends. There are different parts that will relate better to some more than others, but all in all, it's an encouragement and a kick in the pants for women to seek out what many times we deny ourselves.
As it is not just limited to our relationship with God, I think it can be a good bridge to share about the faith with non-believers (esp. women). Overall, it's a great way to connect deeper with the women in your life.

3 out of 5 stars Read the book's first-page preview before buying.......2005-06-20

Mixed feelings about this book. It was recommended highly, so my women's Bible study group is using the book for study and discussion. But after going through about two-thirds of the book, our group is split about whether or not to continue. A couple of the women really like and are inspired by it. But the first sentence gives you a clue about the tone of the book: "This book began to write itself a few years back, when I first washed up on the shores of midlife and wondered how I could feel so empty." Not all of us could identify with that, or we have been there and don't want to work through it again. Would prefer something more uplifting than introspective.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2004-07-08

I really enjoyed reading this book and loved that the author spoke about Christianity from a non-judgemental perspective.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for those not in the know.......2005-08-06

I thought this was a very good book - but for people who really have no, or very little knowledge about taking care of their heart. It gives very good info on how the heart works, different procedures, and exercise. Diet is also included with recipes

5 out of 5 stars strong women,strong hearts :a practical guide.......2005-05-21

This is a highly readable scientifically based book on how to decrease the risk of developing heart disease. The strongest points are its emphasis on cardiovascular disease in women and the evidence based scientific literature regarding the nature of the problem and the approaches to decreasing heart disease. The dietary advice is sound without being trendy or glib, the advice on appropriate receipes is useful. The guide to adequate exercise and physical activity is very helpful. An excellent book by science professionals for the laymen audience.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2007-09-29

Good cookbook, but a lot of recipes involve multiple stages such as sauces or stocks that are made seperately. Book was lost in mail and took 4 weeks for delivery.

5 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Latin American Cuisine.......2005-03-16

If this book was about latin american cuisine, I would give it four stars. The writing is great, and Chef Van Acken's philosophy (on food and life) is well worth reading. The recipes are feasible and delicious if executed correctly; something easy to do with some knowledge on food. I love this book, and go back to it often for inspiration, but it's still a book about New World Cuisine, and the Chef leaves his signature in every recipe, therefore the preparations are not authentic.

I have given 5 stars to this book because I value Norman's input. He is a phenomenal cook and a creative chef. His food should not be missed when visiting Miami and his knowledge on the ingredients and techniques from Latin America is exceptional. I wish the book was longer, with more recipes and longer stories, as I truly believe this author teaches through his books.

This is great book for the home cook and the professional alike. If you enjoy these recipes, and there's no reason why you shouldn't, then you will become curious about the food from my area of the world. For that I should always be grateful to Chef Van Acken.

5 out of 5 stars A Rich Sampler of Pan American Cuisines.......2004-01-21

The multi-award winning Norman Van Aken of the restaurant `Norman's' in Miami has done us a great service by providing us this survey of New World Latin cooking plus a precis of the many influences which have borne on these cuisines. The geographic range of the recipes is truly impressive. The countries or regions to which the recipes are attributed are:

          Pan Caribbean 19 recipes
          Pan Latin 19 recipes
          Cuba 19 recipes
          Mexico 18 recipes
          Peru 14 recipes
          Brazil 12 recipes
          Colombia 9 recipes
          Venezuela 8 recipes
          Nicaragua 5 recipes

4 recipes: Argentina, Chile, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad
2 recipes: Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador
1 recipe: Bahamas, Bolivia, Central America, Dominica, Martinique, Panama, Uruguay

The book also includes several pantry, sauce, and mixed drink recipes not attributed to any specific region. The pantry recipes owe much to classic French technique, which Van Aken taught himself early in his career. The recipes for chicken and pork stock follow traditional methods, but they include a lot more ingredients than the French classics. Most notable additions are wine, mushrooms, tomatoes, and chiles.

The large number of recipes from Mexico and Cuba are expected for a chef working in Miami, especially with the acknowledgments he gives to Rick Bayless and Diana Kennedy, our leading experts on Mexican cuisine. The emphasis on Peru becomes obvious when you see the references to Nobu Matsuhisa, who worked for many years in Peru and who has popularized many dishes based on Peruvian themes and foodstuffs.

The sizable body of congratulatory blurbs on the back cover of the book from the likes of Nobu, Mario Batali, Charlie Trotter, Todd English, and Emeril Lagasse attest to the quality of his cooking and, more importantly for you the reader, the quality of his researches into this `New World Cuisine'. I think the most important quality of the book is not culinary invention. Van Aken is not taking any credit for creating these recipes. His accomplishment is in the collecting and exposition of these recipes and their most important ingredients for us.

Van Aken is especially wise to not call this Latin American cuisine, as he makes it clear that the cuisine of the lands south of the Rio Grande have been created by an amalgam of Native American, Spanish, East Indian, Chinese, Japanese, African, Portuguese, Italian, and Polynesian influences. While Van Aken claims credit for inventing the phrase `fusion cuisine' it is plain that `fusion cuisine' has been going on in the New World since South American (Polynesian?) mariners carried plants from Pacific Islands to South America's Pacific coast. This activity expanded with a vengeance in both the old and new worlds as American foods such as corn, tomatoes, potatoes, and chiles were taken to both Europe and Asia and Old World foods came to America. For example, Italian and Sechuzen cuisines changed dramatically with the introduction of tomatoes and chiles respectively.

One of Van Aken's contributions to these recipes is to replace original peanut or palm oils with canola or grape seed oil. It's interesting to note that deep frying was never done in pre-Columbian America, as the natives, even the Aztecs and the Incas did not refine oils in sufficient quantities to use it as a deep frying medium. Another addition by Van Aken is wine and beer pairings with recipes. It is possible that he also contributed to the use of European fortified wines in recipes, although that may very easily be a Portuguese addition.

The background information on major ingredients and major influences is almost worth the price of admission. This is not a scholarly book, a thorough study of one or a few cuisines in the style of Diana Kennedy on Mexico or Paula Wolfert on Morocco. But its contents have much of the authority of a scholarly work. It is a sampling of recipes from many lands which makes this a much more valuable book to the typical foodie. All the recipes are first rate stuff, presented by a passionate and talented chef.

I highly recommend this book as an introduction to the cuisines of the Caribbean and of South America. The bibliography will also offer many sources of additional information on this cuisine. This book is worthy of Norman's colleagues' praise.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating and excellent.......2003-11-11

Just like the other reviewer wrote, this is the first cookbook I've read cover to cover in a while. It is extensive - you won't want for recipes on anything - from appetizers right through dessert and cocktails. It fits a definite void in my cookbook collection too - I have some 50+ cookbooks but nothing like this book. Nearly every recipe sounds delicious, and the writing is easy going and reflects the author's clear enthusiasm for cooking and Latin American/Caribbean food and culture. My only wish is for more photos. The ones included are beautiful, but I count only 32 (4 sections of 8 each). Still don't let that stop you from getting this captivating, unique cookbook that I'm sure will be a great culinary jouney for me, and become a classic in my library.

          5 out of 5 stars What a gem of a cookbook!.......2003-09-30

This is the first cookbook that I have read cover to cover in quite a while. I ordered this along with about 5 other cook books, and of the order, this is the only one that I kept. The recipes are written clearly, my only qualm would be that some ingredients arent listed with other names that might be known be.. ie.. scotch bonnet chilis is the only name given, and to me, that isnt their most common name... nonetheless, the recipes so far have been a joy to make, I have only made two or three so far.. the nicaraguan salad, flank stank in red chimichurri sauce, and fried onions in cheese.. all were yummy, and I cant wait to try more.. this is definately a keeper of a cookbook!

And then there are Our Just Desserts: A Cubano Bread Pudding Brûlée, Havana Bananas with Barbados Rhum, a Stirfry of Exotic Tropical Fruits in Aromatic Spiced Crêpes.

5 out of 5 stars Norman' s New World Cuisine.......2006-03-18

An excellent and well conceived book. Clear instructions. A master piece in terms of nouvelle cuisine, with an extreme care in mixing spices. I have just ordered two books written by Norman in order to see how he combines tastes and ideas for Latin American and Caribbean Cuisine and Exotic Fruit.

          5 out of 5 stars Great recipes--great ideas.......2005-09-28

I got this book on the recommendation of a friend who is a good cook and she was right. I have tried several recipes already and they were terrific. The recipes have also given me ideas on how to combine food in a more creative way.

5 out of 5 stars A way to change cooking.......2004-05-28

Norman Van Aiken's New World Cuisine signaled a turning point in cuisine that offered a new way of approaching the world of the islands, Florida, and Latin America with a fever for taste and a lust for culinary adventure. I not only read and re-read every word of this book I also cooked my way through most of the recipes.
His writing style is very inviting and brings the reader/cook into the New World kitchen in such a way that the flavors he explores become familiar by the end of each recipe.
Norman Van Aiken is one of todays culinary heroes and for me stands above the lot of the over-exposed chef/actors that litter the stages and bookshelves of contemporary dining.
This book is highly recommended for people who already posess a good bit of cooking knowledge. It is not for the meek, this book is for people who love to cook, and who love the world of fruit, spice and the sea. His cooking style is bold and very alive. New World Cuisine is a must for anyone interested in why food tastes so great today.

4 out of 5 stars Elegant but not Easy Recipes!.......2003-06-08

The recipes in this slick cookbook are neither for beginners, the lazy or the poor. One could invest a good deal of time and money in preparing some of these elaborate dishes. There are some fairly simple bread recipes in this book that I want to try; and I can testify that the Key Lime Cheesecake with a Toasted Nut Crust (page 258) is as good a cheesecake recipe as I have ever seen. I believe the secret is that the eggs are separated. The cake is as light as a souffle when done. I have baked it three times now, and my friends cannot get enough of it. (This recipe alone makes the book worth owning.) Directions are minimal, however, so you're on your own. (For example, you are never told to grease the springform pan. Neither are you given any indication as to how the cake will look when done.)

What this book does provide, however, is insight into what a meal would be like at Norman's Restaurant. Also, all information about the wonderful fresh vegetables and fruit of South Florida--complete with great photographs-- makes those of us who must drive half a day to see the ocean hungry for salt air.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Spicy Fusion Cooking.......2001-03-01

There are a lot of ways to do fusion, Norman's is simply one of the best I've encountered. But be warned, a lot of work is needed to prepare the dishes. Most of his recipes require that you prepare an additional sauce or prep-kit (like his bean kit that can be used for soups or BBQ sauce), so you have to read the recipes very carefully. If you do spend the time, you will be greatly rewarded.

Norman's dishes are all generally rich and spicy. His themes are Caribbean and South American, with Asian and European (primarily French and Spanish) influences. He uses a lot of Habanero (VERY hot), red onion, assorted tubers, and plantains, he is clearly very influenced by creole cooking (he is based in Florida afterall).

Starters: He has a great "starter" section with drinks (his delicious "Hot Lolita" is a tequila drink with honey and hot peppers) and accompanying nibblers (Norm's "Not and Nasty Nuts", peanuts baked and spiced); a great way to kick off a dinner party. His guacamole with fried plantain chips are great for picnics. He also has an eggplant with goat cheese that is simply excellent.

Soups: Very very rich, but oh so good. He has a plantain chicken soup that is to die for. Again, so rich it's good in small portions for a dinner party. He also has a gazpacho that is completely unlike any you've tasted, and a "conch" soup that he says his "patrons would riot if I took it off the menu". I believe him.

Salads and Main dishes: Tea Spiced Pan Seared Tuna and Spinach Salad has become one of my favorite quick meals (great citrus dressing). Juicy steaks (venison and traditional beef), lobster dishes, chicken (creole in nature), and others, his main dishes are a little eclectic, but generally excellent.

You'll also find side dishes (lots of peruvian potato and boniate sides), sauces, and prep kits in the back which I've enjoyed. I made BBQ oysters with his BBQ sauce and they we're superb. He has desserts, bit I personally haven't gone there yet...

If you are into the effort (for intermediate to advanced cooks) and like or want to get into (spicy) fusion then you should buy this book. I've given it away to two friends and will likely continue to buy it for others.
