Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2004-12-24
I'm still reading this one, but so far I love it! It's got humor and helpful info, so I can de-stress while I'm reading about how to further de-stress. This may sound sad, but I think this has got to be one of my favorite books! It seems to have covered every place that stress can derive from and it gives useful and reasonable tips on how to handle it when it comes up or even before. It actually helped me to get through a would've been flaming-arguement with my husband without losing control and yelling at him when I read the section on venting beforehand. He wants to borrow it now. lol The tips in this book are easy enough so that you don't get stressed out even more trying to do them. There's nothing there that I've read so far that tells you that in order to deal with your stress better, you must first go to a field in the countryside over in Japan and be one with the grass and the air and the flowers and the birds. No crap like that. Just humor and help. My job isn't stressful but the trip to and from it here in Atlanta is, so that's where my stress areas begin. I carry this book from home to work with me and then back home and around the house to do more reading. I highly recommend this book!
Better than psychiatrist.......2004-11-07
I was feeling stressed out so I saw a psychiatrist (with my insurance a psychologist is not reimbursed). The only thing he could propose me was a few sessions of relaxation (I won't call it hypnosis). It helped me relax, but as soon as I left his office back into the stressful world I realized that it didn't really help me. So I ordered this book. My coworkers made fun of me but I don't care, they're all stressed out right now and I'm not. One of my coworkers even told me that I'm not showing that I'm committed. I guess people think you're really committed to your project when you stress out over all the things overwhich you have absolutely no control.
This book is great. He covers all the major areas of stress management and gives plenty of concrete ideas for reducing stress. The book is very practical, meaning you can practice it and improve your health. I read it about 6 months ago and I think I'm going to go back and read it again. If you're feeling stressed out I highly recommend this book.
A RELAXING READING.......2004-02-18
It seems we're not at all reluctant to admit how little we know as there are now over 50 million "Dummies" books in print. And, thank goodness for many of them, as my "WordPerfect for Dummies" has often saved me.
Now, we can learn to be tension free with "stress-busting advice and exercises."
Read by the author, a clinical psychologist, in his most affirming and encouraging voice, he promises that we can combat stress with diet and exercise and even diminish our anger and worry.
Stress Management For Dummies.......2002-12-13
You don't have to be a dummy in order to manage the stress in you life. There are a lot of things in life that can stress you out. This is an excellent book on stress management. It describes the causes of stress and various things that you can do to prevent or reduce the amount of stress, like breathing exercises. Did you know that a messy house can stress you out?
How about rush hour? The cartoons also help to de-stress you! How can you be stressed out when you are laughing?
FABULOUS BOOK!.......1999-11-25
I read this book over 5 times, and it just amazes me how this book is so clear about clearing up stress in my life. There is a wonderful sense of humor in this book. The author, Alan Elkin, must be a funny guy. I hope that he will write many more books. If you have any stress in your life, or if you even just want to laugh hysterically over and over again, please read this book!

Great Reference book for suffers and those who loves him/her.......2006-03-23
This is NOT a self-help Book. If you want a Self-Help Book, do your research and buy one. This book is a REFERENCE book about anxiety disorder. and is a GOOD ONE~!
If you have anxiety..........2005-12-15
If you have anxiety, 360 pages of info is overwhelming. Usually anxiety is not that complicated. Start with something simple that gets right to the point of reducing your anxiety (I did the program at selftherapy.org and loved it). Then if you want to become an expert, read a book like this.. highly informational, but not all that practical.
Disorganized.......2005-12-06
Abolsutely one of the worst self-help books I have read. There isn't any structure, and it's not simplistic. The advice given is helpful but the authors then reverse the whole deal. Its like one chapter says this will be helpful, and then another chapter says it wont. It just goes all over the place and you cant really follow what the authors are trying to get at.
A book I highly reccemend for anxiety and depressive related disorders is "Feel the fear and do it anyway" Much more simplistic, easier to read and get thru. And much more cheerful.
I also dont like that these authors have seperated anxiety and depression from one another. I guess they do have a new book coming out that combines them both. It will be interesting to see if they have learned anything from their last two failures.
But for someone that wants quick and easy advice, this book is certainly not for them. I'm afraid that this book of jargon will make it more confusing.
You can LIVE with anxiety !.......2005-07-24
Hi All
Firstly, this is a really helpful book... easy to read and putting all your fears in easy to understand words. There is LIVE after and during anxiety and panic disorders. Secondly, as per other reviews, Magnesium, calcium and vit B supplements do help to lessen anxiety. Try it, but first speak to your doctor.
GREAT READ ! Thanks Laura and Charles.

Magnesium can speed up relief; please read this review!.......2005-04-19
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as has changed mine.

A base for creativity.......1999-09-23
I have had this book for ages. I even brought it with me 6 years ago when I moved to Thailand. Actually, I bought it after eating at the restaurant in Manly, Sydney. It's a great book to get a feel for what it is to "cook Thai". After you've got that feeling, you can use it as a springboard for creative Thai cooking. After you've served your dishes to your friends, they'll say two words..."aroy maak!" (very delicious!) Just buy it!
Deliciously superb!.......1998-11-29
This is the best Thai cookery book I have ever come across. Colorful photos and easy to follow recipes. Having tried several of the recipes, I found them very authentic. Never, never, will I ever loan a cookery book to anybody on Earth! Especially THAI COOKING CLASS!! Please, I want my book back.

Delicious Thai Food, it's all Here Waiting to be Enjoyed.......2006-07-16
Seven years ago my husband Dub and I sailed into Whangarai Harbour in New Zealand. On our way in I spied some friends or ours, Gayle and John, who we'd met in Tahiti. They were Kiwis and they were ending their five year circumnavigation, home at last. We anchored close to their boat and later dinghied over for sundowners (usually Coke and Rum). That evening, as usual, we told tall tales of our adventures at sea and we congratulated ourselves on being in this wonderful place at this wonderful time. Later, as we were saying our goodbyes, Gayle gave me her set of the Salamandar Book of Series Cookbooks. They are sold by HP Books in the States as paperbacks. Gayle carried these books around the planet and now she was giving them to me, complete with her notes (written in the books) on the recipes, how well she and John liked certain dishes, which were their favorites, how hard they were to prepare. She knew I was a cook and she thought I'd appreciate them. She was right.
Like all the books in the series "The Book of Thai Cooking" is about five inches wide and about a foot tall, making them kind of unique among cookbooks. But one should not be put off because of the odd shape, these are real books and you can find mighty darned good recipes in them, especially in this book. The Pork and Peanut Soup on Page 28 was one of Gayle and John's favorites and Dub and I quickly took to it. The Shrimp and Cucumber Curry on Page 60 is another delight as is the Shrimp in Yellow sauce on Page 53. You can really get into Thai cookery with this book, whether it's using banana leaves or tangy curry, it's all here, waiting to be enjoyed.

Looks can be deceiving.......2006-01-10
Having owned "Chinese Cookery" by Rose Cheng & Michele Morris for probably twenty years now, and having loved every recipe I have ever made from it, I had great hopes that HP Books would come through again with "The Book of Thai Cooking."
The lovely pictures in this cookbook look just exactly like what you get when you prepare the recipe. In my experience with two recipes I've tried though, the pictures probably taste better than what the recipes will produce, should one choose to lick them.
All in all I'm quite disappointed by this book and probably won't try any more of its recipes.
Does anyone know of a good Thai cookbook?
Great introduction to Thai cooking........2003-01-05
In its almost 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.
This installment, the Book of Thai Cooking, starts with a brief introduction into the basics of the Thai cuisine, the necessary equipment and utensils and a glossary of ingredients, and then presents recipe suggestions for all major courses, from appetizers, soups, curry pastes, sauces, dips and garnishes to vegetables, salads rice, noodles, desserts and drinks. Special chapters are dedicated to fish and shellfish, poultry and (red) meat. Classics such as curries, satays, stir fries, coconut and lemon grass dishes appear next to unique dishes such as lychees in coconut custard, mango with sticky rice and pork and peanut soup.
From banana leaf cups to Thai fried rice and vermicelli soup, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the richness and unique flavors of the Thai cuisine - and at a relative bargain price, to boot. Also recommended for fans of Asian cooking: this series' installments on Vietnamese, Japanese and Chinese Cooking, on Stir-Fries, and on Curries and Indian Foods.
The recipes are wrong.......2002-03-01
The book looks great, but the recipes are bad. Try to find a Thai cooking book that is written by a Thai person.
Best for the exemplary photography.......2001-02-04
A lot of Thai cooking is based on visual appeal. The value of this book is the color photography of the finished dishes and list of ingredients specific to Thai cooking. There are not a lot of recipes in this book, but you can modify the ones here and make Thai inspired salads, rice dishes and your own creations based on these. The essential recipes are all here and generally this is a very good overview of Thai cooking, though by no means comprehensive.
Book Description
The simplicity and ingenuity of Thai cooking is brought to life in this inspirational cookbook. The exciting recipes from the East featured in this volume will be sure to spice up any meal. What's Cooking: Thai features chapters on snacks, starters and soups, meat and fish main dishes, rice and noodles, and desserts and drinks. All of the recipes are easy-to-follow and feature clear step-by-step instructions for creating a collection of mouth-watering meals.

Dumbed Down Thai, or Vaguely Thai-Influenced Dishes.......2004-09-05
Christine France's What's Cooking Thai might better be termed "Dumbed Down Thai", "Asian-like Dishes for Dummies", or "Vaguely Thai-Influenced and Intermittent Thai Dishes". This is a cookbook shamelessly cashing in on one's desires for authentic Thai cuisine. I've traveled to Thailand to firsthand experience the cuisine, eat regularly at Thai restaurants, and have made quite a few recipes from various Thai cookbooks, with fresh galangal, fresh cilantro (coriander) and lemongrass from the side of my semitropical home....
The recipes appear to have been thrown together without careful proofreading, or certainly trying them...last night I made "Roast Chicken with Ginger and Lime", and had to laugh when the recipe called one to "place the chicken halves on a tray over a roasting pan half filled with boiling water"...roast in a 350 degree oven for ~1 hour...When the chicken is cooked, boil the water from the roasting pan to reduce it to about a scant cup. Blend the cornstarch with the water and stir into the reduced liquid. Heat gently until boiling, then stir until slightly thickened and clear. Serve the chicken with the sauce...Huh??
Come on, Christine, " reduce" a roasting pan half filled with boiling water down to a "scant cup"? Uh-huh, sure! Why not make a rich water reduction from 2 gallons down to a "full cup" for more of that rich "water reduction" taste?!
Is there no better crafted sauce to put over the chicken than Christine's bland cornstarch and "reduced water"...for shame! I hope others do not buy your book on "Sauces"...I've seen enough! Now in fairness, it can be a tasty chicken given it's ingredients, however to compensate for the addled instructions, I added all of the chicken drippings, with some fat, yielding perhaps one truly "scant" ounce and some cornstarch and water, to create a more tasty sauce! So, this book is geared for beginning cooks, who may not be able to rescue a sloppily written recipe with it's bland sauce, and improve it on the fly.
This book's drawbacks additionally include it's complete lack of corresponding Thai names for the recipes..it would have been nice (or perhaps rather embarrassing for Christine) to match a recipe with a familiar name at a Thai restaurant to see how close the ah, abbreviated "inspired" recipe comes to it's authentic cousin, (at least twice removed).
It lacks in it's forward any helpful hints on how to best obtain, approach and prepare the unique items of the Thai kitchen that appear in better books. It could give more hints than are in the recipes. I do give it credit for asking one to use mortar and pestle rather than food processor for preparation.
The book's has abbreviated recipes, suitable for a "Somewhat Thai-influenced Cookbook", however there are better, and easy books available, for cooks who do not have a good basis of Thai dishes.
Such recipes as "Baked Cod with a Curry Crust" are of questionable Thai origin.
Her "Pad Thai Noodles" with tomato ketchup, (Yes!) whose photo certainly looks unlike the sum of the ingredients, with apparently green onion sections/Chinese chives (doubt lemongrass) tossed in by a food stylist, who never read the ingredients!
Want to make the great standard, Tom Kha Kai soup (chicken with coconut milk)? Sorry, not even an imitation recipe or authentic one in this meager book.
Settle for Christine's "Thai" Creamy Corn soup with Egg, Mushroom and Tofu Broth, or Spinach and Ginger Soup, Chili Spiced Shrimp wonton Soup, or Chilled Avocado, lime and Cilantro Soup...which are combinations clearly more Chinese or Latin than Thai! Perhaps these recipes are inspired by Christine's visit to a Mexico City "Hilton" or other restaurant catering to American or British style cuisine!
Want an "Indian/Middle East- inspired" rather than true Thai dessert, try Christine's Rosewater Ice! Want "Asian-influenced"? Go for Christine's Caramel Apple Wedges with (token) Sesame seeds! There's "Balinese Banana Pancakes", to fluff up this crazy quilt of a recipe book, looking pretty similar to a dish one can have at an IHOP (Innternational House of Pancakes) or Stir Fried Pork and Corn..."typical of Thai street food"...hmmm missed that street stand in Thailand!
Truly Authentic Thai, NOT found here!
For Authentic Thai recipes, read the large and beautiful Thailand The Beautiful Cookbook, by Panurat Poladitmontr; David Thompson's scholarly tome, Thai Food; Nancie McDermott's Real Thai; Cracking the Coconut by Su-Mei Yu; It Rains Fishes by Kasma Loha-Unchit, to name just a few far more authentic Thai cookbooks. Charmaine Solomon's Complete Asian cookbook has more authentic and tastier Asian recipes.
Christine is said on the flyleaf to have written/co-written over 20 books...if they are also possessing this questionable authenticity and so-so quality, worst case scenario, that might leave 19 other books for you to pass by, as well! I hope this is just one of her lesser quality books, and look forward to reading some others with better authenticity from so prolific a cookbook author.
Every Recipe Is a Winner.......2001-09-11
I bought this cookbook this summer, more to add to my collection than to actually learn Thai cooking. But then I tried a few recipes, and I've been hooked on the cookbook ever since...
Having grown up in an Asian household, I'm already familiar with a lot of the ingredients and techniques used in Asian cooking, but I love the fact that this cookbook explains ingredients and technique without being condescending to those who aren't familiar with Asian cookery much less with the kitchen.
I usually use post-it notes to mark the recipes in a new cookbook that I want to try. When I started marking pages in this cookbook, I realized that I wanted to try everything. While I haven't had a chance to sample it all just yet, I can tell you that everything I've tried has been perfect. Even my boyfriend, who is definitely a "meat and potatoes" man loves when I prepare something from this book. I've also found that, despite the simplicity of the recipes, my dinner guests always assume that I went to elaborate lengths to prepare these wonderful foods. My favorite is an exquisite cilantro coconut chicken dish that just knocks the socks off of anyone who tries it.
Great beginner's cookbook........2001-08-28
This is one of my first Asian cookbooks. It's a great cookbook for beginners. Not only the instructions are clear and easy to follow, all the ingrediants in this book are easy to found in most grocery stores. I have tried several receipts on the day of my party, my guests were surprised and enjoyed the food very much. I am highly recommand this book for anyone who enjoying asian cooking.

Book Description
For the World Cup, Rirkrit Tiravanija, the Thai artist known for works that incorporate the provision of ingredients and the cooking of meals for or by viewers, has created a cookbook for halftime. He presents 16 recipes, one for each match in the preliminary rounds, to be prepared and eaten midway through the contest. Cheerful lists and instructions are supplemented by photographs of friends watching football on TV, and Tiravanija incorporates the World Cup motto "time to make friends"--which is dear to his own heart and central to his sociable, intercultural artistic practice--as the book's mission statement. Rirkrit Tiravanija is the winner of the 2004 Hugo Boss prize and recently had a retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery in London. He is represented in New York by Gavin Brown.
Customer Reviews:
Good for beginners, but..........2004-01-26
... sparse on the recipes. It is very basic (and I was a bit surprised to see that in the publication info at the front of the book, it's also listed under "juvenile literature"). There is good info on Thiland, it's customs, people, etc., but a full half of the book concentrated on that and a few silly things like describing the term "boil". Definately not enough recipes. A grand total of 24 recipes, including how to cook rice and recipes for simple sauces. I'm disappointed with this (and the book "Cooking the Vietnamese Way" which I ordered with it) but hate to return things so I'll just have to make the dozen or so recipes that interest me. Then get a nice, comprehensive Thai cookbook where I can preview it before buying!
Well put together.......2003-02-24
I happened upon this book in the library and took it home with me. It has 70 pages and includes about 24 recipes, with many photos of different foods. It is one of those books that you pick up and immediately like the way it looks. The recipes are easy to read and instructions are fairly simple. That same day I took it home, I tried the recipe for Lemon Chicken Soup, which only required 9 separate ingredients, and none difficult to find. I have made plenty of thai soups and none came close to what I would get at a thai restaurant. I didn't expect a whole lot out of this recipe as it was simple to prepare, but when I tasted it, it was the best thai style soup I had ever made. I couldn't believe it was one of the easiest to make, but the best tasting. I then went on to try the thai fried rice. Their recipe includes using pork or tofu, but I just left those out. Once again, the ingredient list was simple and the technique not at all hard. The cayenne pepper was what made it nice and spicy and it was an easy and quick recipe to make. I made it twice in the 2 weeks I had the book. There was also a Panaeng Beef Curry recipe which I had to try. I can't say mine came out as good as I hoped, but it may have been because I used lite coconut milk instead of the regular, the sauce was thinner that I would have expected. Nevertheless I copied the recipe down and will try it again with nice fatty coconut milk. In the end, I copied onto 3x5 cards several recipes and think this book was a great find. I only wish they had more recipes in it.

This book is nicely done. It is well-balanced to suit the needs of those who are less experienced with Thai and Chinese cooking, but at the same time offering something for those who are comfortable with the basics. The recipes are not complicated nor do they require hard-to-find ingredients. Many of the recipes come with a side-bar that includes "Helpful Hints", "Tasty Tips", and "Food Facts." These are a nice addition and I found nearly all of them to be useful. This book is chock full of beautiful, full-page photographs of the finished dish, as well as smaller photos of the various stages of preparation. If you had to have only one Thai/Chinese cookbook in your kitchen, this would be the perfect candidate.
