5 out of 5 stars Take Comfort in Comfort Foods!.......2002-07-27

I was in the mood to read the other day but nothing seemed to strike my fancy when I spied my well-thumbed copy of SQUARE MEALS. This is not just a cookbook, but a history of food and culture that takes us back to the white-gloved "ladies who lunch" of the 1940's to the suburbanites of the 50's and 60's. The recipes are wonderfully familiar with pot roast, mac and cheese, and chicken noodle soup taking center stage. These are foods your grandmother cooked and there isn't a bean sprout in sight! Not only are the recipes great the stories and the history make for wonderfully satisfying reading. I would urge anyone with a love of food and a passion for kitchy history to get this and add it to their library.

5 out of 5 stars Tasty, fun and educational!.......2000-05-20

Absolutely one of my favorite cookbooks of all time, Square Meals is fun to read and the recipes are delicious. Jane and Michael Stern clearly love food, love fun and love our culinary history. Several of my best dependable recipes are in these pages - Mom's Best Pot Roast, Perfect Mashed Potatoes, and Mary Jane's Rice Pudding with Cream. (I can't quite bring myself to prepare "Undescended Twinkies", however.) As a cookbook collector and an avid cook, I can tell you that these recipes stand the test of time. Long after truffle oil and wasabi mashed yams have lost their appeal, you will still pine for Deep Dish Apple Pie and the memories it conjures. And I hope your copy, like mine, is inscribed "from your sweet-lovin' daddy."

5 out of 5 stars What a tragedy that this is out of print!!.......1999-11-05

There are cooking cookbooks and reading cookbooks, and this is my all-time favorite reading cookbook. This is the kind of cookbook that it's fun to curl up with on a cold night, just to soak in all that good comfort food. Of course, there are many wonderful cookable recipes - the Cincinnati Chili, for example, is absolutely outstanding, and authentic. The roast pork with sinner stuffing is also superb. This is the antithesis to 90's low-fat nouvelle cuisine and other overly fussy fare. Fun illustrations, too.

Book Description

"Eat more, eat clean" for fast, healthy weight loss and high energy!

Have you been looking for a healthy way to eat, without all the hassle of counting calories, calculating percentages, cutting out the foods you love, or regaining the weight? If so, Monica Lynn, founder and CEO of 5 squares#153;, offers the perfect plan to change how you eat -- and to change your life. 5 squares delivers five healthy, balanced meals -- or "squares" -- to clients each day. Now, you too can make the meals that have helped thousands of happy customers -- including members of the Yankees, Mets, and Rangers -- lose weight and increase their energy. Lynn's philosophy is simple: "Eat more, eat clean, and plan ahead." Eating five satisfying but smaller meals a day helps to keep your metabolism running smoothly and continuously, rather than shocking your system with a load of calories from larger meals. Developed especially for your kitchen and based on tried-and-true nutritional information, 5 Square Low-Carb Meals eliminates "empty calorie" foods that contain wheat and sugar in favor of those that help build lean muscle mass. The result: Your extra pounds will drop off safely and easily, and your energy will increase by leaps and bounds!

In 5 Square Low-Carb Meals, Lynn takes the guesswork out of healthful eating with twenty days' worth of easy-to-use recipes packed with flavor. Divided into five parts -- one for each "square" or meal -- the book provides a host of delicious options for your breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, mid-afternoon snack, and dinner. The combination of carbs, fat, and protein has already been calculated to create a healthy balance, so you can use the sample menus provided, or simply mix and match your own daily five squares according to the recipes and foods you like best.

Lynn also provides food diaries for charting your progress; information on how to create your own balanced recipes; and tips on dining out while on the plan, setting exercise goals, and staying on track long after you#146;ve completed the first twenty days.

Looking and feeling great are within your reach. 5 Square Low-Carb Meals gives you all the tools you need to change your lifestyle for the better, for good.

5 out of 5 stars Finally - A diet plan that really works!.......2007-06-05

5 Squares Low-Carb Meals has taken me beyond what I've been able to achieve on my own. The book provides ample information and insight as to what it takes to formulate a palatable and result proof diet. Its surprisingly easy and simple!! In addition to the book, I signed up with 5 Squares Meal Plan (delivery). I cannot emphasize enough that the changes were literally visible in a matter of days...wow! Not to mention the beneficial side effects: increased energy, and alertness. I am and have always been healthy in general, but this diet plan has definately taken me where no diet or excersize has taken me before.

I think we all have a general idea of eating healthy but now its time to get the story straight ...

5 out of 5 stars "Body For Life" Review - Just Sour Grapes...........2004-10-27

The results are indeed in for me. As a veteran dieter with a lot of weight to lose, I have been on Monica Lynn's program for 3 months and have lost nearly 40lbs so far and the pounds keep coming off! I have more energy and feel better than I have in 10 years. I was buying a copy of this fantastic book for a friend of mine when I saw the ridiculous and misleading comments by the Body For Life guru and I just needed to set the record straight. The 5 Squares food is delicious, the program is no-nonsense and easy to follow and the results are amazing! This is only "diet" that I have ever been on that has enabled me to truly change my eating habits. I tried the Zone Diet for a much longer period of time which much less success. This book could change your life, it has certainly changed mine.

4 out of 5 stars Easy, Tasty, and it worked! what more do you need.......2004-08-26

The book I bought was really easy to read, helpful, and .. though I never thought I'd be saying this about any diet food.. delicious. I'm no culinary expert, but my meals came out looking pretty nice.. though I don't remember having any pictures to compare them too. Nonetheless, easy read, easy recipes, tasty meals, and a leaner me. Would recommend to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars In response to "Body for Life" review.......2004-08-26

The results are in - the book has been a great success for me both in business and for personal gratification! 5 squares has assisted thousands of individuals over the years attain weight loss and general sense of good health. To write a review such as the one listed by my company's competitor is both malicious and misleading. If the author of the review would have even opened the book - he would have known that there were no pictures to compare his dishes to in the first place. Perhaps, Amazon should require an individual to purchase a book before he/she is able to write a review.
The Zone Diet, as mentioned in the review is a wonderful healthy eating program, one which I highly recommend. Dr. Barry Sears is a brilliant scientist, and a personal friend of mine. Our programs are rather parallel and we have worked together over the last year to get the word out on how healthy and wonderful eating this way is - how eating "clean" can change your life. I offer you this challenge Sir Body for Life - I will personally cook and deliver your meals to you free of charge if you would be so kind as to read a book before you slanderously review it.

1 out of 5 stars Bland and boring.......2004-08-20

I found the dishes to be very bland and boring. You seem to eat much of the same style of food. There is not much variety, just like most of the other diets on the planet. I did not prepare a single dish that ended up looking like the pictures in the book. I highly recommend The Zone diet. The dishes were easier to prepare and much more delicious. I lost 7 pounds in 20 days on the five square program. However, I lost 18 pounds on The Zone Diet.

5 out of 5 stars So good, I had to get 2 copies.......2002-05-23

I have an edition which was published 1984 by Alfreed A Knopf. Now i see that there is a revised edition abd I'll have to get another!

I first ran into yhis book one saturday in '90. By Sunday evening, I Had read the entire thing, been back to the bookstore just before it closed to get another copy as a gift for my mother. I have never read a cookbook that I have so thouroughly enjoyed just Reading! Not to mention the recipies contained in it. The style of wriring is delightful, imagine listening to you favorite "Elder Relatives" talking about the way things were cooked, and WHY they were cooked. It is as much a history of cooking and cooking styles, as a cookcoook.
My favorite sections are Nursery Food, and Victory Dinner and Mothers Sunday Dinner. Wherever you go, in within this book you will find many gems; like how the rationing system chaned eating and menues in WW II. Or the 3 pages on how to properly prepare toast!
You'll love the wit and research that have gone into this book! You can't go wrong with this one! .. Now i'm off to get copy #3 (just in case!)

5 out of 5 stars The Only Cookbook That Makes Me Laugh Out Loud.......2002-03-26

Only Jane and Michael Stern could have written this hilarious historic cookbook. They combed archives and libraries and found quintessential recipies reflecting American domestic cooking, dating from approximately the 1930's to the early 1970's.

Where else could you find a book that includes a recipie for Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast for 100 (from the World War II chapter,) horrifying things to do with bananas (from the nursery foods chapter), and the hilarious high point--the Luau in Your Living Room circa 1957. I won't ruin this for you other than to inform you that it involves cabbage, vienna sausages, toothpicks and a can of sterno.

I've made a few recipies from the book and they've all turned out great. So, not only is it a hoot, you can find recipies for real down home American cooking.

5 out of 5 stars Pepsi Cake and Cafeteria Mac N Cheese.......2001-11-01

Where else could you find these recipes, in such a colorful and
humorous collection? A great book - and a great read, even for those who "can't cook"!

    3 out of 5 stars A disappointment-not a true revision.......2001-10-28

This was billed as a revised edition, and it is not a truly revised edition. It is a re-formatted edition, with some new archival illustrations, but the text has not been altered at all.Since the printing of the first edition of Square Meals, some things have changed, particularly the potential danger of salmonella poisoning. Many of the recipes in Square Meals call for raw eggs, and it would have been a real service if the Sterns' had added a notice about the potential danger of raw eggs. I have actually cooked from the first edition, and the recipes I have tried have worked well.It is good to have this back in print, but this is not a true revision. The original forward by the great MFK Fisher has been retained.

5 out of 5 stars Great Meals and a Wonderful Read.......2001-09-15

If you are like I am and enjoy reading cookbooks, this book is a real pleasure.

The recipes all turn out wonderful. They are type of recipes that are real stick to your ribs type of pleasers. The history of the recipe and the US intermingled with the recipes is interesting.

This is one cookbook that I am glad is sitting on my shelves.

Who would have guessed that an innocent search for an inexpensive edition of War and Peace could lead to an all-consuming obsession? Nancy and Lawrence Goldstone's romance with rare books arose from just such a search and led them to a world they had never encountered before: the world of antiquarian books. They quickly found themselves infatuated with this quaint and curious world, and scoured the East Coast in search of first editions and rare books. This search, and the curious people they met along the way, is chronicled in their book Used and Rare. Their second book, Slightly Chipped, continues this exploration, taking us on tours of book fairs, libraries, and auctions. No longer the wide-eyed innocents, the Goldstones delve a little deeper into the book world: they explore facets such as fine printing and literary movements, pour over Bram Stoker's notes for Dracula, and puzzle over the incredible markup of hypermoderns. (Never heard of hypermoderns? They are collectible books recently published. A first edition of Sue Grafton's A Is for Alibi sold for $1,250 in 1998. Better check your shelves.)

Both the avid bibliophile and the casual reader will find things to enjoy in Slightly Chipped. For the collector, the Goldstones' discussion of the Internet's impact on collecting is illuminating, and their look at the hypermodern market is positively eye-opening. Plus, visits to such places as the Rosenbach Museum in Philadelphia and the Pequot Library in Connecticut will get any bibliophile's salivary glands going. For the casual reader, Slightly Chipped is as warm and engaging as Used and Rare; although the Goldstones have become sophisticated book collectors, there is still plenty of the ingenuous surprise and delight that made Used and Rare such a joy to read. They balance out the serious aspects of book collecting with a liberal peppering of literary anecdotes, ranging from William Morris's tyrannical leadership of the Kelmscott Press to the sexual proclivities of Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Group, keeping the tone light and the pace lively. All this packed into one volume makes Slightly Chipped a rare treat for book lovers of all types. --Perry Atterberry

                Book Description

More than a sequel, Slightly Chipped: Footnotes in Booklore is a companion piece for Used and Rare. A delight for the general reader and book collector alike, it details the Goldstones' further explorations into the curious world of book collecting. In Slightly Chipped, they get hooked on the correspondence and couplings of Bloomsbury; they track down Bram Stoker's earliest notes for Dracula; and they are introduced to hyper-moderns. Slightly Chipped is filled with all of the anecdotes and esoterica about the world of book collecting that charmed readers of Used and Rare.

                Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars How far do we go in pursuit of our obsessions?.......2007-01-22

In "Used and Rare", the Goldstones wrote lovingly about their journey of discovery and adventure in the pursuit of a good used book; the book chronicled their descent from merely used book shopping to used book obsession. I rated that book 5 stars - and it deserves it. I like the Goldstones have become a bookaholic. But, in "Slightly Chipped", we see the other side of the Goldstones and those that have followed the same path. Obsession is never a good thing in the end; moderation is a much better goal.

In this book, the Goldstones find themselves behaving a bit badly at times during their quests; especially, when they are with some friends they introduced to the sport (so to speak). And here in lies the problem with this book - it reads like an obsession; not just the pursuit of books, but also in the pursuit of writing about the pursuit (they follow this book with at least three more about this obsession).

Now I admit that I might have become a bit jaded since the first reading of "Slightly Chipped" more than seven years ago (but, oddly, I wasn't in my review of Used and Rare which I read around the same time). Recently, I have re-evaluated my own obsession with books; I now question some of the very principles I have operated under for the last 20 years of book collecting. I question the need to own a copy of every book I have ever read - let's be honest with ourselves, not everything we read is good, some is down right bad; but in the end, even some of the books I have enjoyed and were good books are not necessarily worthy of owning for all time - always needing more bookcases, the ever more challenging task of moving them, the friction caused with a loved one who doesn't quite share your obsession, only your love of books.

So, my new found liberation from the obsession of book collecting (don't get me wrong, I can't get rid of a lot of books and still amaze my friends and irritate my loved ones), has me looking at this book as the glorification of taking a love too far; and thus, I find it flawed. Furthermore, I have lost the desire to read the Goldstones' later books.

1 out of 5 stars Patronising twaddle, not for the bibliophile........2007-01-04

I bought this book eagerly anticipating a journey into the world that I love. It transpired to be my most annoying purchasing dissapointment in quite a while. If you know anything about rare books, if you are in any way shape and form a bibliophile, then leave this one alone. No sooner do you start to read the text block than you realise there is nothing here that is based upon scholarship; everything is superficial. The book has so little substance it is clearly a book for people who are not book collectors. The Goldstone's have churned this out too soon after "used and rare", without too much thought and an apparent belief that everything they say is of interest, it is not. The annoyingly gossipy descriptions of book related matters (such as the Bloombsbury set's "who slept with who") is simply pathetic. I found myself skipping over paragraphs because the story line was so inevitable. My impression is that the Goldstone's had read the "gentle madness" books of Basbanes and were trying to do something similar. Unfortunately it didn't come off, this one is a real dud. If you havent read any of Basbanes yet you have a real treat waiting for you; go and type his name in the search box, enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars Pretentious and distasteful.......2004-04-30

If you like name-dropping and looking down your nose at honest helpful people, you might like this book. The Goldstones seem pretentious and obnoxious. Too much of the book is filled with discusions of fashion and restaurants. I was hoping they'd talk more about books.

The book is a disservice to book lovers. I wish someone would write a book about book collecting that was infused with a love of books, rather than this blather. Save your money. Buy books by Nicholas Basbanes and John Dunning and John Baxter and Robert Wilson and Paul Collins instead.

                3 out of 5 stars Slightly Chipped.......2003-05-10

Having first read Used and Rare I was disappointed in the quality of this work. This collection of essays is too disjointed, never really focusing on anything for long enough or maintaining a single theme. While the stories themselves are entertaining it just isn't on par with the rest of the Goldstones work. Having later read Out of the Flames I must say that the Goldstones need to stick to one topic per book and not to try another collection of essays without a common thread between them.

                1 out of 5 stars Strike Two.......2002-02-09

"Slightly Chipped", by Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone is the second offering on what is supposed to be their continuing exploration of the world of book collecting. However, just as in their first book, "Used And Rare", the topic of books serves to provide these people with a continuous stream of targets for abuse. Please do not take to heart their description of what it is like to collect books nor of what type of people you will likely encounter while doing so.

To give you an idea of how far this book routinely strays from the alleged topic, what follows are direct quotes. The first takes place at a gathering at a library amongst a small group who are present to learn about very rare books. Any one of the volumes could be the subject of an entire book, but books are just a tangent in this brief and shallow memoir. While they do not hesitate to name the person they describe, and also list his occupation, I offer just a fragment out of the respect for privacy they show no concern for. "He was the kind of person whom Hollywood casts as the computer junkie who uses the Internet to lure young women to his apartment for.................." This is what they choose to describe as books from nearly a millennia ago are passed around the table. A book by William Morris is part of the evening's discussion. Mr. Morris produced some of the most prized limited editions of the late 19th Century. Here, that is almost a footnote when compared to his personal life, which rambles on for pages.

These people cannot even visit a bookstore that I know well, without adding this bit of irrelevant mean-spirited commentary on Torrington CT. ".thus providing the grimness and depressedness of Torrington for that much longer". Canton is described as, "hardly a town at all", and they quiz the owner on why he is located in such a difficult location. Our authors have moved to Fairfield CT. since their last book, an area that allows them to name drop the famous and wealthy, one of whom had to change homes because the light at The Yacht Club shone into his bedroom. What any of this has to do with books is beyond me.

Collecting books is a wonderful hobby. Shop owners generally will spend vast amounts of time, sharing their knowledge and love of books. I have been present when booksellers have taken a personal check for several thousand dollars on the final day of a show, from a person they never met, hours before they were to fly across the Atlantic to their shop in England. As a group, book collectors and dealers are wonderful people who share what Author Nicholas Basbanes has called, "A Gentle Madness". The authors do not enjoy this state of mind, rather, like the title of this book what rests upon their shoulders may be slightly chipped, however a large portion remains firmly in place.
