I have a stovetop smoker and wanted a book that could help me with more recipes than just the few I received with the smoker. This book is a great resource and I have enjoyed using it. My very favorite things to cook in the smoker right now are potatoes. EXCELLENT!

4 out of 5 stars Cheerful Guide to Smoking Food.......2007-01-22

Styler has an upbeat, cheerful & encouraging approach to smoking food that makes you want to put everything you have in the frige in your smoker. The basic recipes at the back are the best part.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have Book With a Cameron Smoker.......2007-01-19

Along with the Cameron Smoker I bought my husband for Christmas, I also purchased this book. Great ideas for smoking foods and some yummy recipes. It's easy to understand and the recipes we've tried have been delicious.

5 out of 5 stars Healthy & Tasty Year Around Cooking.......2006-09-21

This is style that is not that hard and due to stovetop adaptation, one can have the healthy benefits as well as unique smokin' flavor. This aid and recipe collection will aid that immensely.

Styler was on FoodNetwork showing this off, caught my eye and appetite. He has great recipe breath here: even scrambled eggs and soups and salads, to what one typically associates with smoking: ribs, sausage, chicken, fish, etc. Favorites thus far include: Smoked Salmon Pate; Phyllo Pastry Tartletts with Smoked Shrimp and Spinach Filling; Turkey-Mushroom Barley Soup; Tea-Smoked Duck with Asian Slaw; Tea-Smoked Shrimp and Asparagus Stir-Fry.

Only way to make this even more exceptional and useful would be "sources" listing and color photos. The latter would certainly heighten the price.

5 out of 5 stars A must for fish lovers and their non fish lover families.......2007-02-05

My husband loves to fish, I'm not too crazy about fish. This book is an excellent source of fish recipes. We use them on all types of fish and they are wonderful. If you're tired of fried, barbequed, and poached fish this book is a must. You'll find recipes ranging from very basic and simple to those with an exotic foreign flare; but all are easy to prepare in your own kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars A must have if you like Salmon!.......2006-11-30

This is a great book for cooking salmon and steelhead. We have used numerous recipes, all are great! Our favorites include bisque and smoked salmon bread. To die for! We have given this book as gifts to others who are equally impressed!

    5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!!.......2006-01-05

This is by far one of the best cookbooks I own. My family eats salmon at least once a week so a book devotely specifically to enhance the flavors of salmon is just a lifesaver. After trying out a few of the recipes (which are all delicious and made with household ingredients), I bought the book for my father (an avid fisherman who just LOVES the recipes) and my sister (who uses the recipes on other types of fish and says they are still great). The recipes are simple yet tasty and you can modify each recipe for a smaller meal (I cook individual steaks or fillets with a different recipe for one meal depending on my family's taste). If you EVER cook fish I recommend this book. It is divided into sections for all types of cooking - appetizers, soups, one-dish meals, entrees, plank cooking, and a great section on how to prepare your fish from catching it to eating it. I can't say enough good things.

As a major salmon lover, this is a fantastic book. It makes my mouth water just thinking of the gorgeous recipes inside (and the pictures). I never knew there were this many ways of cooking with salmon. There are stunning soups and heaps of other healthy treats here.
The ones I've tried so far are the Spicy Salmon Samosas With Chilli Tomato Dip, Salmon and Goats' Cheese Tart with Tomato and Basil Salad, Smoked Salmon Pate with Classic Melba Toast and the Hot Smoked Salmon Chowder. They have all turned out great and they were easy to make because Nick has written this in a clear and concise way so that each recipe is easy to follow.
It's a beautiful hardcover book that is easy to use (has prep times and amount that each dish will serve) and would make a great gift or a nice treat for yourself if you are also a salmon lover. Even if you aren't, there are so many variations here, that you'll maybe turn into one.

                Book Description

Lavishly illustrated with nearly 400 color images, Painting the Maya Universe is the most thorough study and brilliant display of Classic Maya ceramic painting yet published. Building on twenty years of research and debate, Dorie Reents-Budet and her collaborators Joseph W. Ball, Ronald L. Bishop, Virginia M. Fields, and Barbara MacLeod bring together many perspectives, including the art historical, archaeological, epigraphical, and ethnohistorical, to examine one of the world’s great but overlooked painting traditions. With an emphasis on sixth- to eighth-century pottery featuring both pictorial and hieroglyphic imagery, Painting the Maya Universe presents an extraordinary exploration of the cultural roles and meanings of these Guatemalan, Belizean, and Mexican elite painted ceramics. Maya pottery is discussed both in aesthetic terms and for the important information it reveals about Maya society, artistry, politics, history, religion, and ritual. The range of ceramic painting styles developed during this period is also presented and defined in detail.
Painting the Maya Universe is the first publication to present a definitive translation of the hieroglyphic texts painted on these objects. With many glyphs deciphered here for the first time, this analysis reveals much about how these vessels were perceived and used by the Maya, their owners’ names, and, in several cases, the names of the artists who created them. This information is combined with archaeological and other data, including nuclear chemical analyses, to correlate painting styles with specific Maya sites.
Published in conjunction with Duke University Museum of Art and an exhibition touring the United States, Painting the Maya Universe presents an astonishing visual record as well as a monumental scholarly achievement. With photographs by Justin Kerr, the foremost photographer of pre-Columbian art, it includes over 90 unique full-color rollout photographs, each showing the entire surface of an object in a single frame. The book also addresses the questions and controversy regarding the loss of information that occurs when objects are removed from their archaeological context to become part of public and private collections.
Painting the Maya Universe will energize discussion of Maya pottery, hieroglyphic texts, and iconography. Its photographs, a lasting resource on this great painting tradition, will stimulate and delight the eye. It is a breakthrough in art history and Latin American scholarship that will enrich general readers and scholars alike.

5 out of 5 stars Hundreds of brilliant color plates and expert essays........1999-03-07

I've read much of what has been written about Mayan ceramics and can say with confidence that this is the best book on the subject ever written. The essays in it, by top professionals, discuss the forms and functions of the ceramics, the meaning of their calligraphy, their basic themes and the places particular styles of ceramics come from. Indeed, if you read it carefully and more than once, you too will be able to decipher the principal inscriptions even on pots that are not in the book. There are hundreds of full-color photographs of Mayan ceramic vases and plates in this book. These vases are decorated with pictures of formed the greatest Pre-Columbian civilization. These ceramics depict Mayan textile design, Mayan hair-dressing, Mayan head-dresses, Mayan ceramics (within the ceramic paintings), Mayan concepts of design and of the other worlds below this one. From them we learn of Mayan myth,Mayan ritual, Mayan daily life, and Mayan art. Leaving aside the great monumental art of sculpture and stucco that adorned major structures, leaving aside the structures themselves, and giving credit for a host of varieties of artistic representations ranging from the Tsimshian to the Moche... I think it is an absolute fact that the art that appears on Mayan ceramics is the best that America ever created prior to Columbus and arguably the best... period. This book discusses, describes, depicts and defends that incredible artistic legacy better than any other ever did.

                5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......1997-12-04

This handsome book covers a wide range of Maya ceramic imagery, and is filled with stunning photographs. The imagery is also broken down by catagory, and is supplimented with explations of glyphs. The accessible text that explores the mythology, culture, iconography, and hieroglyphics on and related to the ceramics. The information is thorough without being overly specialized.

                Book Description

For hundreds of years, Maya artists and scholars used hieroglyphs to record their history and culture. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, archaeologists, photographers, and artists recorded the Maya carvings that remained, often by transporting box cameras and plaster casts through the jungle on muleback. "The New Catalog of Maya Hieroglyphs, Volume I: The Classic Period Inscriptions" is a guide to all the known hieroglyphic symbols of the Classic Maya script. In the "New Catalog" Martha J. Macri and Matthew G. Looper have produced a valuable research tool based on the latest Mesoamerican scholarship.

An essential resource for all students of Maya texts, the "New Catalog" is also accessible to nonspecialists with an interest in Mesoamerican cultures. Macri and Looper present the combined knowledge of the most reliable scholars in Maya epigraphy. They provide currently accepted syllabic and logographic values, a history of references to published discussions of each sign, and related lexical entries from dictionaries of Maya languages, all of which were compiled through the Maya Hieroglyphic Database Project.

This first volume of the New Catalog focuses on texts from the Classic Period (approximately 150-900 C.E.), which have been found on carved stone monuments, stucco wall panels, wooden lintels, carved and painted pottery, murals, and small objects of jadeite, shell, bone, and wood. The forthcoming second volume will describe the hieroglyphs of the three surviving Maya codices that date from later periods.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Want to learn to read Maya inscriptions? Start here........2005-10-16

Kudos to Macri and Looper! As a historical and comparative linguist and anthropologist, I greatly appreciate the way the authors have organized, analyzed and presented the glyphs of the Classic Period Maya. Their approach mirrors the trajectory of epigraphic research toward linguistic interpretations.

What I like about this book:

                1. Macri's linguistic training and knowledge of Cholan languages contributes a much needed perspective to decipherment.

                2. The grapheme drawings were beautifully rendered by Looper.

                3. The introduction brings the reader up to speed with important background informatioon on Maya epigraphy, linguistics, and an explanation and overview of how the new catalog works.

                4. The graphics include many that were missing from previous works. For graphemes that were included in Thompson's Catalog of Glyphs, the Thompson number appear next to the grapheme.

                5. Each catalog entry not only includes the grapheme, but all syllabic and logographic decipherments in both Cholan and Yucatecan, grammatical category, and a list of proposed decipherments by various scholars from 1566-2002.

                6. There are separate appendices for proposed syllabic and logographic values rather than a confusing syllabury.

                7. The English glosses for the graphemes are listed in a separate appendix

                8. Appendix 4 provides a concordance of the equivalencies of the new catalog codes with Thompson numbers, Gates, Zimmerman, and Knorozov.

                9. The Index at the end of the book is user friendly, demonstrating the foresightedness of this new way of organizing graphemes.

                10. Unresolved debates about linguistic and epigraphic issues do not cloud the purpose of this book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest or a passion for decipherment.

                4 out of 5 stars Bought a book? Don't think you'll read the glyphs!.......2003-11-22

The author offers an overall and sometimes confusing summary of glyph readings which circulated over the past ten years, both as published articles and as informal notes. The decipherment of the Maya script has made a real breakthrough in the nineties and Macri's catalog is a good summary of these recent advancements. Its major disadvantage, however, is that it will be of very little value for any beginner. Remember, it is just a sign list, an 'alphabet' of the Maya writing, not a grammar. Unfortunately, no grammar of Classic Maya Choltian has been published so far, largely because of major disagreements between several groups of scholars who offer contrasting reconstructions of this language.

What is good about Macri's book:
                1. Sign grouping is quite convenient and it is easy to find a specific glyph.
                2. The Appendix with its final sign-lists is also very useful

                What is not so good...
                1. The authors seem to be extremely conservative in their understanding of 'signs' in the Maya script. Both 'complex' signs like UCH' and ligatures (conflations when the graphic representation of both signs is affected) are underrepresented.

                2. Sometimes, it is hard to understand the politics behind the choice of a particular reading and not all possible alternatives are cited (some people may not be happy with such approach).

                3. As all previous catalogs, this one does not make a conscious attempt to grasp the range of graphic variants of each sign (which is sometimes just overwhelming). Instead, it relies on individual examples.

                      Book Description

"I can say unequivocally that this volume will become a basic and heavily used reference and source of ideas. . . . Geoff Braswell is to be commended for bringing together so solid, comprehensive, pertinent, and balanced a compilation of research and thought on this topic as is represented by this collection." --Joseph W. Ball, Professor of Anthropology and Archaeology, San Diego State University Since the 1930s, archaeologists have uncovered startling evidence of interaction between the Early Classic Maya and the great empire of Teotihuacan in Central Mexico. Yet the exact nature of the relationship between these two ancient Mesoamerican civilizations remains to be fully deciphered. Many scholars have assumed that Teotihuacan colonized the Maya region and dominated the political or economic systems of certain key centers--perhaps even giving rise to state-level political organizations. Others argue that Early Classic rulers merely traded with Teotihuacan and skillfully manipulated its imported exotic goods and symbol sets to increase their prestige. Moving beyond these traditional assumptions, the contributors to this volume present extensive new evidence from archaeology, iconography, and epigraphy to offer a more nuanced understanding of the interaction between the Early Classic Maya and Teotihuacan. Investigating a range of Maya sites, including Kaminaljuyu, Copán, Tikal, Altun Ha, and Oxkintok, they demonstrate that the influence of Teotihuacan on the Maya varied in nature and duration from site to site, requiring a range of models to explain the patterns of interaction. Moreover, they show that the interaction was bidirectional and discuss how the Maya in turn influenced Teotihuacan.

                                Book Description

The freestanding relief sculptures, or stelae, carved by the ancient Maya between A.D. 278 and 514 are the subject of this book. Inhabiting the dense, lush jungles of present-day Yucatán, Guatemala, and Honduras, the Mayas carved richly dressed figures and glyphs and placed these sculptures in grand civic plazas open to all social ranks. Most scholars who have studied Classic Maya stelae are archaeologists, epigraphers, and historians who have tried to tease facts about the Maya past from these public sculptures.

Here Flora Clancy, an art historian, explores the artistry revealed in the stelae, their aesthetic values, carving techniques, imagery, and text. Re-creating the social and cultural context of the Maya artist, Clancy explores the composition and images, knowledge and skills of the sculptor, and the relationship between the artist and patron. Her examination of the stelae and their pedestals reconstructs how the sculpture fit into the Maya artistic world and suggests how and why Maya art speaks to our own.

An art historian explores the artistry revealed in the freestanding relief sculptures carved by the ancient Maya.
