Book Description

Venice can be a dangerous place for a man's emotions--particularly at Christmas, particularly if he's the grief-stricken art historian John Ruskin. In 1876, a year after the death of his clandestine love, Rose La Touche, Ruskin arrived in the city of canals and arched bridges. The author of such acclaimed books as Modern Painters and The Stones of Venice, Ruskin suddenly found himself adrift without his Rose. He'd seen his own youthful marriage scandalously annulled; he had lost his faith, his love, his fortune. It was time to heal.

Ruskin's Rose tells the unforgettable story of Ruskin's relationship and of his time in Venice, when he rediscovered art through the paintings of fifteenth-century artist Vittore Carpaccio. Gorgeously illustrated with photographs of letters, maps, flowers, lockets, and other artifacts, this tale will stir the heart of every reader.

5 out of 5 stars Illustrious.......2004-06-16

You do not need to be neither an art expert nor historian to appreciate this find book. Like the above reviewer has already mentioned, this is not even a book: it is in fact a living artifact to be treated in league with the works of arts it treats as subject matter. A work of art unto itself. Style-wise it reminds this reader of one of Nick Bantocks' books, and in fact, Mr.Bantock had written a book called 'The Venetians Wife'. But if you are not totally and delightfully suprised and charmed by the books maps, illustrations and photos then it wil be the story itself that leads you around by the lapels. Indeed, the author weaves a warm spell; draws you in and one gains the impression from just the very first few pages that it is a story that deserves to be settled in for and is at once illustrious and intriguing, beguiling and irresistably seductive all in one. By the way, makes a great gift and in fact like me, you may find your self buying not just one...but two. Let this book earn a special place on your book shelf mantle and your heart as well. One gets the impression that this is exactly what it was meant for. Enjoy!

Well, it is indeed a pretty obect, but it's hardly a "book". It has to take me longer than a half an hour to read in order to dignify a piece of writing as a "book". As an illustrated historical essay, i give it FIVE stars. Publishing a hard cover around an fine essay and filling it with illustrations, is a little too "twee" for my taste, but i have to admit it was an experince to read and i will not forget the sensitive insight into my favorite Victorian. Hey, on this date, it's about the right price, Dave... go for it.

5 out of 5 stars A vividly dramatic tale of forbidden romance.......2001-03-13

Ruskin's Rose provides a Venetian love story of an art historian who fell in love with Irish girl Rose in 1858. Using material from the letters between the two, the authors reconstruct a tale of forbidden romance every bit as vivdly dramatic as Shakespeare, with color illustrations by Ann Field peppering the account.

    Book Description

In this book the native Venetian art scholar Stefania Mason takes the reader through a critical appraisal of the painter Vittore Carpaccio, focusing primarily on the four superb cycles of paintings he executed under commission from the city's confraternities between 1490 and 1520. What emerges from the author's insightful analysis is Carpaccio's unerring vision of the Venice of his times, deftly woven with complex allegorical allusions to create vast narrative tableaux that catered to the Venetian institutions' keen awareness of the power of imagery.

The study begins with the fabled Life of St Ursula cycle (1490-c. 1498), now in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, in which Carpaccio shows his skilled handling of perspective, endowing his canvases with a mixture of recognisable townscapes and imaginary landmarks of medieval stamp, whose visual cues include personages, gestures, customs and ceremonies in a rhythmical interweaving of reality and legend. Next comes the cycle executed for the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni (1502-c. 1507), featuring Sts George, Triphun and Jerome, in which an errant knight and a hermit saint lead the observer into a mythical Orient. The masterpiece of the series is the Vision of St Augustine, where the saint is alone in his study and the disembodied spirit of St Jerome enters by the window in the form of brilliant light illuminating the entire room with its domestic minutiae and panoply of humanistic attributes.

No longer in situ but dispersed among various museums are the last two series carried out by Carpaccio, this time with assistants: the Life of the Virgin cycle for the Scuola degli Albanesi (1502-c. 1507); and the set depicting the Life of St Stephen for the scuola dedicated to the saint (1511-20), a remarkable eulogy to stone and its manifold uses in building and sculpture (many of the confraternity's members were stonemasons). The selection of details and close analysis of Carpaccio's canvases afford a cogent visual guide and critical assessment of this great master of Renaissance painting.

      Product Description

Carpaccio was the greatest early Renaissance narrative painter of the Venetian school - and this illuminating study by Peter Humfrey ably demonstrates the truth of this statement. Little is known of Vittore Carpaccio’s early life, only that he was born sometime between 1455 and 1460. The dominant influences on his early work were those of Gentile Bellini and Antonello da Messina. His first known works do not appear until 1490, the date on one of the canvases in the cycle illustrating the legend of St. Ursula for the Scuola di Santa Orsola. In these celebrated works he emerged as a mature artist of originality, revealing a gift for organization, narrative skill, and a masterly command of light. Carpaccio died some time between 1523 and 1525 and was subsequently neglected for many centuries. He was rediscovered in the nineteenth century, when his precise rendering of architecture, and the luminous atmosphere of his paintings were praised by the English critic John! Ruskin.

5 out of 5 stars Practical and helpful. A must for your mentoring library!.......1998-12-01

This book serves better as a handbook or manual for mentors or those interested in becoming mentors. It is not necessary to read the entire book unless you want to know more about the history and background of teacher development and its trends.

What I liked most about this book was that you can refer to any given part of the book that was of interest for guidelines and suggestions in mentoring. The authors provide you with various Development Activities to use with your mentees. Also, things that you can put together in your professional portfolio as a teacher or mentor.

There's a great move to using the Coaching Plan in supervision. There's a sample plan included. A plan of action is included along with follow-ups with dates. You can also assign special assignments or readings for mentees as a suggestion to improve certain skills.

The use of journal writing is highly encouraged and promoted. Various formats are provided. It is suggested that at the end of the month, you go back to reread your entries to look for ideas, themes or feelings that surface from these entries. It's a good way to reflect on your practice through this type of analysis of your journal entries.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource on mentoring for educators.......1998-11-29

I used this book as a resource in a graduate level course on mentoring. It proved to be a comprehensive text on adult learning and learning theory in general. The case studies were poignant and highlighted the theories being discussed. The book does point out the need to reflect on one's practice which is often forgotten in the education field. This book comes highly recommended as an excellent textbook for mentoring classes at the graduate level in education. Even though it is comprehensive and therefore lengthy, the text is well indexed and can be easily used as a topical reference.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource Textbook for Field Supervisors & Mentors.......1998-11-26

This book has a fairly complete background and history about teacher supervision and mentoring. Its academic and practical approach allows access for the classroom setting, field supervision scenario and practical tips for mentors and their mentees. It is both a research tool and practical tool for learning how to supervise, be a mentor and what the current thinking is on participatory action research & mentoring. The authors have brought together a workable blend of insightful case studies with theory. The result is a useful reference for field supervisors and their induction phase teachers.

4 out of 5 stars Fairly complete textbook & ref on Supervision & Mentoring.......1998-11-24

This book is a fairly complete compendum of the history of teacher supervision, theories and recent practices. It is very well organized and informative for the researcher and practitioner alike. A good reference for experienced and novice field-supervisors and their mentee teachers.

5 out of 5 stars Up tp date! Great layout, I liked the portfolio suggestion.......1998-11-13

I used this book to teach prospective supervisors of student teachers at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. This book has many features I found inviting to the learner. It has biographies of leaders in education--generally 1-2 pages in length followed by great reflective question. It has an introduction and a summary for each chapter that gains reader interest and reviews learnings as well. It has contemporary issues presented in a way that allows the reader to draw professional judgements--I did not feel I was being "told" what to think, nor did I feel "preached to". Great text!!

                          Book Description

What attracts good teachers and keeps them in the profession? What makes schools better places for students to learn and for teachers to work? These questions are at the heart of Keeping Good Teachers. To answer them, many of the authors in this book have surveyed fellow educators to find out which practices and policies are most beneficial and practical to implement in schools.

The book is divided into five sections:
                          - Part I explores the extent of the teacher shortage and sets the context for studying it.
                          - Part II concentrates on induction, tackling the issue of how new teachers should be introduced to their profession.
                          - Part III looks at the issues of compensation, performance-based pay, career paths, national certification, and other ways to reward educators and make them feel valued.
                          - Part IV describes the role of principals and administrators in sustaining teachers.
                          - Part V discusses the needs and desires of master teachers.

Like its predecessor A Better Beginning: Supporting and Mentoring New Teachers (ASCD 1999), Keeping Good Teachers is dedicated to all those who want to make their profession the best it can be by creating the conditions where good teachers can thrive.

                              Description:
The purpose of this study was to pilot an alternative student teaching supervision model at a college of education in a US context. In the study, the collaborators used multiple paired dyads to supervise student teachers with multiple supports from college faculty. This study examined how teachers and university faculty planned the use of paired dyads and how participants responded to the innovation. The findings suggest teachers and junior faculty can undertake bottom-up reform within larger systemic constraints.
