I personally like the books written, or atleast contributed to by someone who has the disease. It just add that personal touch. However, some of the PCOS books written in this manner have been very poor, or include dangerous advice.
Althougt "positive options" is a big box churn and burn medical topic printing, the info here is very good. The tone is nuetral, more positive instead of negative- another common plague of PCOS lit.
It tells you what to expect, shows you some excersizes, options for managing symptoms, and references. It does have the typical holistic fodder I have come to expect and accept. Aromatherpay as nice as it can be- cannot cure PCOS.
Still a great reference book- All health books have holistic fodder - some good and bad- and you just have to know what will work for you. But, atleast you have the option.

I liked the book, but they wanted you to reduce yourself down to eating twigs and dirt essentially. All organic foods are a nice idea if you can afford to eat like that. I am not sure that if I had looked at this book in a store if I would have bought it or not. Nice ideas, but not always practical.

This is an excellent book to read if you are just looking for basic information on this subject or a newly diagnosed PCOS patient. It provides an overview of the condition and what you can do to manage your symptoms. The stuff covered in here will probably be repetitive if you are looking for a more in depth book.

I thought this book was ok but it's basically just an overview on the condition and treatment options and does not really provide a whole lot of information. It might be good for someone that was just diagnosed and wants a basic understanding of PCOS but I found it lacking in substance. I bought this book mainly to read about the homeopathic remedies that might help and it did provide me with the names of some herbs to look for but I didn't get much else out of it.

I was diagnosed with PCOS many years ago, so a lot of this information wasn't news, but if you've just been diagnosed, this book is full of wonderful and hopeful information. And for those of us who already know what we have, this book is also helpful in providing some alternative treatments (diet, exercise as well as herbal). The tone of the entire book is very supportive and positive. If nothing else, it makes you realize that this is much more common than most people think.

This book has been such a help with many excellent mixes to keep on hand to quickly prepare meals and special items. The book is well laid out and the recipes are terrific.

I have the 1978 edition of Make a Mix and upon receiving it as a promotion gift from Tupperware, immediately took it apart, punched holes in the pages, and put those little hole enforcers around them. This was a keeper, and indeed, it has been for thirty years now one of my favorites. It is worth owning for the granola recipe alone, which is a staple in my home and now in my daughter's homes. I'm looking forward to ordering them each one for Christmas, so they can make their own mixes.

I have used the 1980 edition of this book for years and bought copies for all my daughters. I highly recommend it. I especially love the Mexican meat mix for chimichangas. I was happy to see the new 1995 edition which I got from the library , but noticed the pages falling out which is very unpleasant. I have just ordered the 2006 edition which hopefully will have better binding. However, if not Kinko's can spiral bind it, which is usually better for a cookbook anyway.

This is a replacement book because I have had this book about 20 years ago on it's first run. It is a staple cookbook. If you don't have some convience mixes at home this is the book to have. It saves money.

I have been using both Make-a Mix and More Make-a-Mix cookbooks since they first came out. I have modified some of the recipes to suit my taste and dietary/allergy considerations.
At one time I had over 100 cookbooks and these were among my most used and useful along with Joy of Cooking (1975 edition), Better Homes and Gardens (the new one), Betty Crocker (1950, 1961, 1969), Rodale's cookbook and Marguerite Patten's Every Day Cook Book. After I lost everything I owned due to a disability and subsequent betrayal of the "friends" who had promised to store my belongings until I could retrieve them, I searched for months I found replacements for all except the Make-a-mix cookbooks. I found them here on Amazon. Even, or especially, since I live alone now I still use them as much as ever.
I will be purchasing the new one ASAP.

I have used this book for years. Am ordering now for Christmas gifts. Fun idea to make making the mixes more fun. I get together with a friend and we go in halves on the ingredients and make a mix together and split. Half to her house, half to mine. We get to try more mixes that way and visit at the same time. More like fun less like work.
The granola recipe is the best ever. I don't like granola usually and love this one. I make it for Christmas and put in pretty mason jars with ribbons. Everyone loves it.

This is a wonderful cookbook! I owned a copy in the 70's that got a lot of use. I now own a new copy. The latest edition has additional recipes and updates older ones so they are in line with current health guidelines. This cookbook helped me raise a family, and now, as empty-nesters, it's still helping us put dinner on the table! Everyone is busy these days and many are living on expensive and unhealthy takeout food. You can have delicious, thrifty and healthy meals with a minimum of fuss, using this cookbook. Periodically, I cull my cookbook collection and discard outdated ones - but I will never part with Make-A-Mix!

I'm really excited about this book! So far all the recipes I've made have been great, with the exception of one - the Brownie Mix. The recipe does not call for any liquid, is this a misprint? It was crumbly - not even close to 'pouring' consistency.
I'm looking forward to making more of the mixes & hoping someone can help me out with the brownie recipe!

This book is THE comprehensive guide for all the attachments. I have almost all of them and because of this book I have learned how to use them. My advice is do not be intimidated to try things. Jamee makes it easy to learn just follow her instructions.

This is just a supplemental book for the Kitchen Aid mixer line. I agree with another reviewer, you'd spend as much time assembling and then cleaning the attachments as if you'd done it conventionally. Reminds me of all the food processor cookbooks that came out twenty-something years ago, finding excuses to use the machine even when not called for. I guess that maybe if people got a K'Aid and wanted to play with their new toy and its attachments that this would make sense. Many of the recipes sound a little too twee for me anyway. The meatloaf looks repulsive, is really more a meat-and-vegetable pate than a true meat loaf--and expensive to make! Desserts, pastries, breads, the real strong points of a good stand mixer, are shortchanged in this book. I use Bosch and Electrolux mixers rather than K'Aid (not strong enough) and found little to use in my machines. Avoid unless you can get it cheap--

An often used book in my collection.......2006-12-08
My favorite thing about this book is I can make brownies spur-of-the-moment, with what's on hand. Out of unsweetened chocolate? There's a brownie recipe using chocolate chips or cocoa. Out of cocoa? There's a brownie recipe with chocolate syrup as the chocolate! I enjoy a decadent, chocolate dessert as much as the next person and do make the more complicated recipes requiring combinations of bittersweet and semi-sweet chocolates for an extraordinarly special tasting brownie. There are also wonderful icing recipes if you prefer your brownies iced. But, when I need a brownie right away, I turn to this book. With only a few basic cooking ingredients, I can bake brownies tasting much better than a box, with only slightly more effort.

If you love brownines, or just plain chocolate, this book has got a little something for just about every kind of craving you could have. The recipes set up like the recipes from Weinstein's other Ultimate cookbooks where there is a basic recipe with many variations or add-ins so that you can make almost brownie you might be craving. As another reviewer posted, many of the recipes do use eggs and butter, but there are also low-fat and somewhat healthier versions of brownies as well (Low-fat, Applesauce, Fat-free, Gluten-free to name a few). I especially recommend the Cocoa Brownies, they are always a favorite, and the suggestion in the recipe intro is right on, the brownies are totally awesome right out of the freezer! Great cookbook, certainly doesn't need any pictures to enhance what your mind already knows a brownie to look like.

I bought this book because I saw these guys on The View and checked out some of their other titles. Brownies galore. I think my favorite part of this book are the ideas of what to do with a box of brownie mix. Yes, I'm that lazy. I made the cheesecake brownies. My husband threatened to divorce me if I ever "made" him eat anything that good again. I also made these blondies that have more chocolate than dough. Something like more-chocolate-than-blondie blondies. Anyway, I took them to a bake sale and was instantly Mrs. Popularity at school. Everybody else brought prepackaged things and I showed up with this tray of blondies that knocked them out. The teachers bought so many, I don't think the students had a chance. Great book. Heavy on the butter and chocolate, as another reviewer points out--but hey, if you're going to make brownies. . . .

I will say that this book is great. I 'stumbled' on "Make-A-Mix Cookery" several years ago when a co-worker was showing it to another co-worker. Being a person who LIKES TO EAT and cook because restaurants rarely satisfied me quality- or quantity-wise, I had to check it out. I bought it and a few days later bought "More Make-A-Mix Cookery" after trying a few of the mixes and recipes; none of which disappointed me. My top favorites from "More........" are the "Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix". the best, and the "Snack Cake Mix". These and the recipes: Double Choclate, Oatmeal Spice, Carrot, Banana Walnut, and Applesauce snack cakes are lick the lips, um-um good. I always hated to eat the last piece of any of them. Buy the book!!!!!

I enjoyed this book for years as a mother of 4 and one who enjoys entertaing and serving others. I was disappointed to discover it apperatly disappeard during a move. I'd buy it again. The concepts taught in this book are excellent theology for good stewardship and service to others as well as wise use of resources. The creative and wise cook will enjoy the many varieties offered in this book.

This cookbook has so many choices and various recipes using a basic foundation. My mother put this book through the test when she would cook for our family of 8. Now that I have my own family I am wanting to use it too. Have you ever had Home-made granola? Not many people have. But with this cookbook you can. I can still smell it baking.

I love these recipes! I have three teenagers and have to double the recipes in the book, but they are easy to use and a great idea to just cook ahead of time and thaw out what you want. For an active family this is a fabulous idea. I also like that you can thaw out one mixture and make several different dishes... makes changing your mind about what to cook not a problem!! Highly recommended!

I've used this book for over 20 years and the poor thing is barely hanging together. It is a fabulous selection for the busy family. Its also excellent when trying to teach your kids (mine are boys) and your husband to cook! In addition, my diabetic son, and diabetic sister (both type 1) use it liberally. Some of the desserts just need the sugar adjusted with storable fruit (finely chop dates instead of brown sugar) and away you go!

I have used this book for many years. I've used it in church demostrations, for camping, comes in very handy when a lot of company is expected and you want free time to visit and not spend all your time in the kitchen. Excellent book. Others are wondering how to get a copy of it.
