A patient is told she has only six months to live, and the priorities in her life suddenly shift. Death can be one of our greatest teachers, if we are willing to open ourselves to the shadows of the unknown. Rodney Smith has been confronting death on a daily basis as a hospice social worker. To this experience he brings his time as a Buddhist monk, delving into the workings of the mind. This alchemical combination has produced a book that, page for page, word for word, is one of the best "meaning of life" books around, rivaling Victor Frankl's classic Man's Search for Meaning in power and insight and surpassing it in depth. Complementing his many anecdotes of personal confrontations with death, Smith analyzes why and how we often short-change ourselves emotionally, and at the end of each chapter, he offers exercises for cultivating human wholeness. There are books about death and grieving. This is a book about transforming life. --Brian Bruya

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rodney Smith is a great teacher.......2004-02-28

Rodney Smith has such a calming voice, there is a peaceful reflective tone contained within it. He spent a total of 8 years in monastic life, both at the Insight Meditation Society in Massachusetts and several years as a monk in Asia. He was ordained a monk in Burma, then practiced for 3 more years in Thailand. In 1983 he left life as a monk to come back to the world and, after coming back to the West, started working in hospice and teaching vipassana meditation. He is currently the head teacher of The Seattle Insight Meditation Society, whom you can find on the web and listen to a plethora of online dharma talks he has given. Truly magnificent site.

Rodney has dedicated much of his life to helping those who are dying, a point made clear considering his work in hospice management for the last 16 years. This book is wonderful in it's presentation. As another reviewer points out, this is a book about living above all else. Rodney has pulled together here several eye opening accounts about the diverse ways folks have handled their last moments. Here Smith relates us all to death with reflection on becoming unguarded and vulnerable. On learning from our experiences while living so that we can overcome this fear of the unknown. So that we can listen to others more clearly, more succinctly and perceive their suffering as well as our own. Purchase this book, it's a Dharma Gem.

5 out of 5 stars This book is about living - not dying.......2002-06-22

This book is a compelling and inspiring read for anyone willing to be introspective about the way they live their lives. Rodney Smith writes a very readable book that guides us into appreciating the very profound yet simple concept of being alive. Once we truly face the fact that our lives will come to an end and we will die - then we become free to experience the joy of life.
And he gives us some case studies of people facing imminent death in hospices. In the final days and moments of life many of those people come to recognize what life is really about - and it's not about the stuff they've accumulated, nor about the power and prestige they used to enjoy. It's about the quality of life itself and the love they've shared with people, animals and nature.
He shows us that life is a journey, not a series of destinations. Reading this book has made a profound impact on my life.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and powerful.......1999-02-24

-this book is written with the heart. Every word is necessary and chapter by chapter it all falls into place. Each sentence can be the subject of hours of meditation. Read it and practice it every day.

5 out of 5 stars The philosophy of the dying should be for us all........1998-06-27

Rodney has articulated a way for all of us to live. Through the lives of the dying we gain insight into our own fears. Are we willing to learn these lessons or continue to fear every ending we face?

5 out of 5 stars The dying teach us how to live........1998-06-25

How should I live now? That is the question which Rodney Smith seems to answer for all through the stories of the dying.

Leah Greene is dead. For Laine, knowing what really happened and the awful feeling that she is, in some way, responsible set her on a journey of painful self-discovery. Yes, she wished for this. She hated Leah that much. Hated her for all the times in the closet, when Leah made her do those things. They were just practicing, Leah said. But why did Leah choose her? Was she special, or just easy to control? And why didn’t Laine make it stop sooner? In the aftermath of the tragedy, Laine is left to explore the devastating lessons Leah taught her, find some meaning in them, and decide whether she can forgive Leah and, ultimately, herself.

    Book Description

What is the secret of people who die contented and fulfilled? What makes it possible for them to attain such spiritual heights as they approach their physical demise? What enables them to make death a completion of life, rather than a tragic end? And what can they teach us about life and death, love and loss, grief and spiritual growth?

The way we die, like the way we live, makes a difference—in our lives and the lives of others.

From time to time during his work as a pastor, John Fanestil has witnessed someone dying with remarkable and uplifting grace. Fanestil was moved yet puzzled by the spirit of happiness and holiness he observed. Contemporary literature on dying, filled with talk of anger, acceptance, and forgiveness, provided little to explain it. But the chance discovery of articles about the ritual of the “happy death” in religious magazines from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries brought Fanestil the answers he sought.

Mrs. Hunter’s Happy Death blends the captivating historical accounts Fanestil uncovered with his own pastoral experiences to reveal the secrets that enable people to transcend pain and suffering and embrace death as a completion of life, not as a tragic end. A fascinating introduction to a historic approach to death and its contemporary incarnations, Mrs. Hunter’s Happy Death also offers specific lessons on living and dying, from the “exercise of prayer” to the “labor of love” to “bearing testimony.”

With the spread of in-home medical and hospice care, death is once again being embraced as a natural part of life, infused with profound emotional and spiritual dimensions. The inspiring stories in Mrs. Hunter’s Happy Death beautifully demonstrate that the way we die, like the way we live, makes a supreme difference—in our lives and in the lives of others.

5 out of 5 stars Lessons for Living or Dying.......2006-04-08

I thoroughly enjoyed Mrs. Hunter's Happy Death. Not only did the author present a history of Mrs. Hunter's "happy death," he also included specific examples of individuals from his ministry who prepared for death in this manner. I particularly enjoyed Part 2 of the book which presented spiritual lessons on living (using concrete examples) such as the exercise of prayer, recognizing the presence of God at critical moments in ones life and living in the present. Kudos to Mr. Fanestil!

    5 out of 5 stars Sanctified Dying.......2006-04-05

In Mrs. Hunter's Happy Death Fanestil re-introduces us to the ritual of sanctified dying. Through the lens of an early 19th century journal that Fanestil unexpectedly unearthed, we are led through the process that to modern ears seems oxymoronic - "happy death." Drawing on twenty-something Mary Hunter's grace-filled triumph in (not over) death, this pastoral account shows death needn't be faced with apprehension and anxiety. Dying can be a Christian achievement rather than a reluctant hesitancy.

One important decision Fanestil made was to keep this book from being a mere historical account, and to make it relevant to contemporary life. He does this by aligning Mrs. Hunter's experiences with about 20 more recent examples, largely people the author personally knew from his pastoral ministry. Fanestil's gentle and buoyant writing endears us to these winsome souls. He also connects these stories with 10 spiritual disciplines in a way that will make the book very convenient for study groups.

The book is an undemanding read, but nevertheless, it follows good theological methodology. The horizons of past occurrences, contemporary experience, and scriptural tradition are fused in this sound theological reflection. Fanestil's technique is what Elaine Graham et. al. would call "Theology by Heart." God is experienced through the "interiority of human experience...Journaling, autobiography, psycho-therapeutic accounts of self are vehicles for theological reflection..."

"Happy Death" might seem like an oxymoron. Read this book and see that death needn't mean doom; in our inevitable passing we can find great spiritual pleasure.

    5 out of 5 stars A real "page turner"!.......2006-03-31

Who would have thought that a book about such a topic would be a "page turner"? What a delightful, sensitive, poignant book! Appreciated Rev. Fanestil's honesty and self-disclosure as well as his easy writing style. So grateful for the spiritual disciplines identified in the second part. I will recommend this book to many, I am sure.

    5 out of 5 stars Mrs. Hunter's Happy Death.......2006-03-30

Every single one of us is going to die. We each have choices to make about who we wish to be at that moment. John Fanestil's serendipitous uncovering of the 18th and 19th Centuries' ritual of a "happy death" is an uplifting journey back and forth between the 26 year old Mrs. Hunter's life and death in 1801, and Mr. Fanestil's own experiences with family and parishioners in the present day. His thoughtful and compassionate writing reflects his truly non-judgmental manner, especially when discussing the fine line between "prolonging life" and "prolonging death". He is virtually silent on the question of assisted suicide, but he has provided a road map that certainly can help us decide how to live our lives with a healthy awareness of its unavoidable conclusion and the effect it can have on those we leave behind.

    5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2006-03-28

Mrs. Hunter's Happy Death captivated me. John Fanestil during his time as a Methodist minister met many people who embraced death cheerfully. He relates stories of people experiencing an enlightenment or feelings of devine love though they are ill and close to death. They are able to convey this holy feeling to thier loved ones. Then Fanestil, while reading 19th century methodist magazines learns of a common practice among methodists of the time, the "happy death". In the book he intertwines the story of one woman, Mrs. Hunter, who died in 1801 a happy death, with the stories of people he has ministered to. I found it incredibly comforting at this time when I have elderly and ill family members. He explains how the lessons he has learned can be applied now to help us live better lives. The book touched me deeply.

      Book Description

"As anyone who has dealt with the dying will attest, it is, in fact, dealing with death these many years that has taught me the preciousness of life."

Finding herself in a time of restlessness and transition in her own life, the author looks for inspiration from the Hospice patients she had been privileged to work with for the past 16 years, remembering the stories they had shared with her about what life had meant to them. What were they proud of? What were their regrets? What were the ingredients that went into someone's sense that they had had a very full life? How did the families left behind cope with the loss? She soon found that the "Stories" were rich and varied, and offered much wisdom about life, even, or maybe especially from, the children who had lost people close to them. It can be a real wake-up call to discover that, for the most part, we die as we've lived.

Adding poignant quotes and poetry, the surprising humor that people could find in their situations, as well as her own personal experiences, this book is about the insights and renewed enthusiasm for life that she gained, from 2-year-olds to 95-year-olds, about living life to the fullest. What came up again and again is that it is the Love we leave behind that is all that matters. It is not so much what we do, as how we do it.

She includes suggestions for helping children to deal with loss, part of what her own work at Hospice entailed.

Consequently we are invited to re-examine our own "stories", to change what no longer satisfies us, and to rekindle our own goals and dreams.

The call every mother fears: "Mom, they say I have cancer." Story of a mother and son facing a fatal disease and learning to understand what it means to accept the love of God during a time of extreme emotion. Pamela YatesÂ’ son Sean was just beginning a promising career in television production and had finally begun to gain a measure of self-confidence when he is given less than a year to live. His mother Pamela, wife of famed automotive writer Brock Yates, immeditately jumps into action as they explore treatment options together. A compelling story that takes a hard look at a not-too-compassionate medical system and how God works through it all to reach those who are in need.

5 out of 5 stars A difficult subject given a deftly magical touch.......2006-01-11

I knew Brock and Pam Yates throughout the awful illness of their son. When Pam said she wanted to write a book about it--pulling no punches--I feared it would be a plunge into general emotional blackness and the worst misery a parent can know. Nonetheless, I bought an early copy and am glad I did. This is not so much the story of a terminal cancer patient as it is the story of a mother trying to run the household with as much normalcy as possible, which, it turns out, is exactly what her son most wanted. This is not a tale of daily emotional breakdowns--hers, Brock's, or her son's--but rather a heartfelt shopping list of the dignified and compassionate things you can do daily to get through the one tragedy parents most fear. Every American has had a loved one succumb to cancer. Consider Pam Yates's book a primer on how to get through it--what to do not only for the patient but, just as important, what to do for yourself and your family.

This book was so moving it stayed with me well beyond finishing the book. You feel like you are there while everything is actually happening, and you experience the tight bond between this very brave family. It is a book that is definitely worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You Pamela Yates!.......2005-09-10

"The Gift of More" couldn't have come at a better time in my life. The faith I try to live by sometimes gets caught up and "fogotten" in everyday life. Pamela Yates has a way to make you feel like you are going through the entire process- from the first phone call, all the way to the end- right along with her. If you ever have doubts, or "forget" about a higher power, "The Gift of More" will make you remember that NOTHING is in our control. Especially with the recent hurricane Katrina, everyone could use a reminder right now that no matter what they are going through, life could be a lot worse. It reminded me to take time out from life's daily stresses and enjoy my son, and my family more, and THANK GOD for everything he has blessed me with. And whenever I seem to forget, or get caught up in life, I will be reading the book again. I definitely recommend reading "The Gift of More."

5 out of 5 stars This Is Truly .......2005-09-02

Inspirational is what in a few years I will say as I think back after reading `The Gift of More'. Somehow, right now, it sounds inadequate because of the impact it has had on my spirit. Pamela Yates draws you into her life and the loss of her son, Sean, in a strong, sensitive, and compelling way. She writes from every perspective, looking for answers wherever the questions take her. I felt like I was with her when she spoke to the doctors and the priests, and of course when she was in the little room that was her refuge. I was with her when she woke to find the mysterious markings that form an integral part of the story. I felt the joys and frustrations with the caregivers, doctors, nurses and the medical system. I was with Pamela at home, in the car, and at the hospital, with Stacy in the kitchen and on her shifts with Sean, and of course I was feeling her husband Brock's closeness and support, his gentleness and strength.

You will experience the wonder of the markings and a motivating journey of faith. Pamela didn't miss anything. Her story draws on spirituality at so many levels with insights that provoke an ongoing journey...one that you will be glad you were part of...visit [...]to read more.

      5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2005-08-28

'The Gift of More' is a must read for all. Pamela Yates turns a situation that most people fear into an inspirational and uplifiting story. Throughout the whole story you will feel like you are a part of her life as well as her families and you will feel the authors' emotions in yourself as you continue through the story. With her you will become sad, angry, confused, and learn to have faith. This book was one of the greatest books I have ever read. I just recently received it and from the moment I opened the front cover I couldn't put it down. Regardless of what types of books you normally read, 'The Gift of More' is a book for all kinds of readers. A must have in any library, public or personal!

      5 out of 5 stars Priceless Lessons.......2002-11-22

The Renaissance philosopher Sir Thomas Browne wrote the "Life is the shadow of death, and light is the shadow of God." This beautifully written, short but incredibly rich book about the author's visits with a dying missionary priest casts revealing and ultimately glowing light on the subjects of terminal illness, suffering, death, and--most important--living life to its fullest. The priest, Father Jim, approaches his terminal cancer with the same honesty and courage with which he earlier conquered his alcoholism. His death has more than dignity; it has Grace. This is the best book I have ever seen on the subjects of addiction and dying. Both carry stigmas in our society; if any book can help remove them, this this the one. Meanwhile, it will not fail to raise the reader's spirit!

... if that isn't enough to make a person want this cookbook I don't know what it would take. You say you want more? Okay, I was born and brought up looking out over the San Francisco Bay and I consider it most beautiful, but this book made me want to visit the Chesapeake Bay area and get to know its rich history and its evidently warm and hospitable people, profiled in brief well-written essays in each chapter. Good black and white photographs of people and places, a nicely drawn map at the front of the book, and recipes that speak of tradition and family in the best American way like Mrs. Tovey's Chicken and Waffles with Gravy, and Tangy Peach Short Ribs of Beef. I can't imagine anyone would be sorry to have this book, once they opened the covers and began to read.

If you think Chesapeake Bay cooking is all about the hard- or soft-shelled blue crab--about crab cakes, deviled crab, crab soufflés, crab-stuffed mushroom caps, ham and crab imperial, crabmeat curry, crab fluffs, crab and artichoke dip, crab loaf, crab quiche, and soft-shell crab sandwiches--you have another think coming. This isn't to say that the first 60 or so pages of Chesapeake Bay Cooking aren't dedicated to the blue crab. They are. But then John Shields moves right into oysters, then seafood, soups and stews, chicken and game birds, meat and game, and on all the way to desserts, pickles, and preserves.

Companion to a public television series, Chesapeake Bay Cooking is part travelogue, part history of a region's cooking, part call to environmentalist arms, part paean to childhood past, and part plain old cookbook devoted to the food products and cooking styles indigenous to the Chesapeake Bay.

In one sense, this is what has become of American cooking from the earliest times (Jamestown) to the most recent. Everyone passing through has had an impact on what the Native Americans started. Recipes range from Baltimore Polish and Italian influences to Virginia African American. While some professional chefs of the region are represented, the food for the most part is what's to be found at home, in the back yard, in the church basement. John Shields, Chesapeake Bay homeboy, gives this valuable piece of American real estate both a face and a flavor. --Schuyler Ingle

                  Book Description

Loosen your belts and get ready to chow down on a pile of steamed blue crabs, dine on a Maryland plantation-style feast, or graze through the stalls of Baltimore's Cross Street Market with television host and "Culinary Ambassador of the Bay," John Shields.  In this companion cookbook to the 26-part public television series, take a delicious tour with Shields along the Chesapeake's 4,600 miles of pristine coastline and through the bountiful farmlands of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia.

In Chesapeake Bay Cooking with John Shields, you will learn how to prepare 190 recipes from this mid-Atlantic region's culinary fare, including rockfish and gumbos, duck and Maryland fried chicken, beaten biscuits and the famous Lady Baltimore cake.  Best of all, you'll learn everything you need to know about the undisputed star of Chesapeake cuisine--crabs. Shields's book includes plenty of helpful crabformation--how to buy, cook, hammer, and eat blue crabs, why you never eat the "devil," and how to tell the difference between "jimmies" (male crabs) and "sooks" (female crabs).

With John Shields as your guide, drop in on the locals, who, for generations, have made this region one of the most popular destinations on the East Coast. Visit Crisfield, home to the Miss Crustacean beauty pageant, where you can sample the crispy, sweet, fried soft-shell crabs. Don't miss the rambunctious two-day chicken festival on the Delmarva Peninsula, where "there's a whole lot of frying chicken going on."  And, since Shields always loves a party, you'll join the Biddlecomb family for a real Virginia-style Fourth of July, where the menu includes Miss Lorraine's Barbecued Chicken, Lady Liberty Seafood Salad, and Pickled Watermelon Rind.  And you can't leave Baltimore without visiting Little Italy to share a meal of Rockfish Braised in Gravy with home cook Carmella Sartori.

Here are satisfying foods, easy-to-prepare recipes, and the people who've kept Chesapeake cuisine cooking for centuries--all brought home to you by the region's favorite son, John Shields.

I watched the PBS show that this book originated from and immediately ordered the book. I already own over fifty cookbooks and this has become my favorite. As a native "Baltimoron", I've thoroughly enjoyed the stories and info about Baltimore. The recipes are fabulous. You must try a "Dirty Gertie". Fantastic. These recipes are the best that Maryland has to offer. John, hats off to you! Living in Ocean City, we can sample the best seafood in the world. Now, my kitchen is the best in town. Thanks.

I ended my search for the perfect crabcake recipe with this cookbook! His crabcakes are wonderful, the best ever. And the rest of the recipes and narratives in this book are delicious and entertaining, Shields provides an inviting glimpse into the Chesapeake culture and cuisine. Makes me want to visit the area someday.

This book was a Christmas gift from my husband, and it has to be one of my all-time favorite cookbooks. I thought I knew a lot about this region's cooking, but I learned a great deal from this book. The recipes for Baked Squash & Tomatoes and Oyster Stew have become standbys in my kitchen. Not only is this book full of fabulous recipes, but the stories woven through the book are worth reading just on their own. John Shields is truly a "Bawlamor boy" and one of the state's greatest assets. Highly recommended!

I have owned this book for about 2 years and have tried many of the recipes. It contains fabulous recipes and is filled with lots of history and humor. Anybody who loves the food of the Chesapeake region(and who wouldn't)must add this book to their collection!

Arnold Louis Schmidt has outdone himself in this tome to Chesapeake cooking (although I understand he is not a very good billiard player). As well, Marion Warren's photos provide the ideal visual accompaniment to this flavourful offering. The Blue Crab Guru strikes again!

It is clear that Whitey has prepared these recipes time and again with loving care and is now sharing them with us in the form of a cookbook that targets the unique culinary treats from the Chesapeake Bay. I hope you treasure it as much I!
