Book Description

The only comprehensive guide to the foods, farms, and restaurants of the Hudson Valley: a food-lover's guide to the farms, local foods, open-air markets, restaurants, and regional cuisine of New York's historic and bountiful Hudson River Valley.

New York's scenic Hudson Valley, a bucolic land of farms and vineyards, is often compared to California's Napa and Sonoma Valleys. Each year more than 1 million people visit the area, drawn as much by its culinary and agricultural attractions as its spectacular scenery, historic architecture, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. The small family farms, vineyards, and orchards of the Hudson Valley produce artisanal cheese, pasture-raised poultry and meats, handcrafted wines, and organic produce. They supply local restaurants and farmers' markets and the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, as well as the restaurants and Greenmarkets of New York City, only 90 miles away.

Hudson Valley Harvest is a sourcebook for those who live, weekend, and vacation in the Hudson Valley. Interviews and profiles of farmers and specialty producers round out specific information on farm festivals, events, and family activities. The author provides an up-to-date guide and schedule to farmers markets and seasonal farmstands, as well as a guide to regional restaurants. 10 black & white photographs, index.

5 out of 5 stars A must have when visiting the Hudson Vally.......2004-05-14

Jan Greenberg's guide came in handy last weekend when I took my visiting family - kids, grandparents and everything in between - on a two day trip through the Hudson Valley. This is a great area but it is hard to get off the beaten track , particularly if you want to do more than just look at historic sites and state parks. Even though it was early in the season, this book got us to some beautiful farm and country sites; the restaurant recommendations were right on; and we actually learned a lot as well. Don't visit the Hudson Valley without this book.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for Hudson Valley travel.......2003-06-11

This is THE book for anyone who lives, works, visits or is even thinking of a trip to the Hudson Valley, this bucolic but agriculturally threatened area, just an hour north of New York City. Jan Greenberg not only tells where to buy and eat these outstanding (and tasty) products but in a non-preachy way makes the reader understand why it is important to support these local farmers and producers. Her profiles and stories of the farmers who grow the fruits and vegetables and raise the livestock are truly heartfelt and gave me, and will do the same I think for anyone else who reads them, a new understanding of what is like to be a grower where everything, from weather to the economy, is out of your control. This is the high risk profession!! It makes Wall Street look safe.

Above all, though, this is a book about enjoying food --buying it, serving it and tasting it. As Danny Meyer, owner of New York City's Union Square Cafe and other restaurants known for their support of local farms, writes - "This book deserves a place on the bookshelf (or in the glove compartment) of every itinerant aficionado of New York's bounty." He's right.

5 out of 5 stars We loved it.......2003-05-23

We bought this book before a weekend trip to the Hudson Valley and can't imagine traveling to the area without it. It has everything you would want to know about the farmers and what they are growing and producing. It tells you where and what to eat and how to use what you buy at a farmstand or local farmers market. It also made us really think about the people who grow the food. Their stories are uniformly interesting, even moving. The author has a pleasingly gentle touch when she writes about issues so much in the news today like organics, the humane treatment of animals and keeping small farms viable. Even if you aren't visiting the Hudson Valley, this is definitely a worthwhile book to have and read.

2 out of 5 stars Not exactly an encylopedia of soda pop.......2003-01-08

I applaud the author for attempting to catalog the arcane world of old soda pop advertising, a difficult task when you're overshadowed by the 500-lb gorilla of Coca-Cola advertising. However, this book does not do enough to fill in the gaps of soda pop history. There is no attempt made to identify the years or bottlers of the soda pop brands illustrated. The collectibles pictured are organized by type of object rather than type of soda pop or region. A simple index of known soda pop manufacturers, their locations and years in business would have added so much more to this book. And why not a timeline to give the types of collectibles a little context in the history of bottling? Just a few extra pages would have added a lot of value to a thick book which is taking up more of my shelf space than its worth!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR SODA COLLECTORS.......2001-01-05

A SUPER BOOK FOR THE NON-COCA COLA INDIVIDUAL. AS AN ADVID MOXIE DRINKER AND COLLECTOR I'M ALWAYS ON THE LOOKOUT FOR MOXIE ITEMS. THERE WERE MANY ITEMS IN PETRETTIS BOOK THAT I HAD NO IDEA EVEN EXISTED. IT REALLY ADDED TO MY EDUCATION OF VALUE, SCARCITY AND CONDITION REQUIREMENTS. MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF SODA ARE WELL DOCUMENTED--PEPSI,HIRES,DR. PEPPER,KIST,ETC. ETC.

    Book Description

Of the many media used by companies to bring attention to their products or services, none seem to have had the overall appeal of porcelain enamel. The process of creating porcelain signs is an art in itself, and the influx of new collectors in the market place attests to porcelain enamel advertising's beauty. Few collectibles are made with such long-lasting properties or have been found in such diversity. With hundreds of full color photographs, this new book will give you an idea of the beauty and diverse graphics that can be found in this very collectible area of Americana. Discover the powerful graphics that were so effective on these signs and see the wide range of advertisers who used the medium. The book is divided by manufacturing design with one chapter devoted to gasoline pump signs, a particularly popular area of collecting. Informative captions include a description, measurements, and the approximate age of the sign. This is simply the best illustrated guide to porcelain enamel advertising ever published, and an important reference to collectors and historians alike.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nice, but lacks content.......2003-10-04

This is the only Pepsi guide book that I have, and I'm not real happy with it. It is inadequate, hardly scratching the surface of all the Pepsi collectibles out there.

As with most other collectibles guides, the back index leaves much to be desired. I guess the author agrees because he omitted it completely. Big mistake.

Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of Pepsi guides out there, like there are for Coke. But that doesn't mean this one is the "bible" of Pepsi collecting; it doesn't come close. I'm hard-pressed to figure out why others have written such glowing reviews for it.

It's pretty, but it's incomplete, the prices are all over the map, there's no back index...but there's very little competition.

This was clearly a labor of love for co-authors Martinus and Rinker. Their mini-guide to ephemera collecting in the front of the book is more than worth the cost of the book. It is a joy to read. It provides anyone interested in collecting ephemera will an outstanding overview of the field.

Although the prices listed in the guide are now outdated, the book remains a useful reference for any serious collector of ephemera. This important reference deserves a place on any old paper collector's bookshelf.

It would be wonderful to see a revised edition of this guide with current prices.

      Book Description

Although advertising has a history that goes back thousands of years, it is the Americans who have made it into an art form. Advertisements were put on everything from pocket mirrors to memo pads, the sides of barns to the sides of carriages and buses. A history of advertising printed in the 1880s even show an advertisement on a tombstone. With the advent of color lithography in the late 1800s, some of the most beautiful and highly collectible items were created. Tin signs with colorful, strong images, often embossed, were made for stores, and often found their way into homes. Paper advertising in calendars, trade cards, and posters reached new levels of artistry in the latter years of the 19th century. This new book explores advertising in all its media: tin, paper, celluloid, and enamel. In full color it portrays the creativity of its makers, while at the same time bringing to life the styles of the past 120 years. Included are signs, three dimensional designs, smalls, and novelties. With some tin signs bringing in excess of $100,000 (a Campbell Soup sign included in this book), it is clear that this is an active and exciting area for collectors. At the same time, it is a good field for the new collector, who can find many pieces of advertising for under $50. Both ends of the spectrum are nicely covered in this book, and its up-to-date pricing information makes it an even more important book for all collectors.
