Book Description
Although children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be as healthy as other children, keeping them that way can be a challenge. Routine doctor visits, for instance, can be especially trying for children with ASDs due to sensory sensitivities or communication difficulties. Issues such as sleep problems, unusual eating habits, and impulsive or aggressive behaviors can also threaten their health. Volkmar of the Yale University Child Study Center, and Wiesner, a pediatrician, experts in the field of autism, offer parents accessible and authoritative information for dealing with these challenges and understanding what's most important to their child's medical, nutritional, and behavioral well-being.
HEALTHCARE FOR CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM covers the following topics:
Handling doctor visits and hospitalizations
Growth and nutrition
Safety issues at home, school, and in the community
Sleep
Seizures
Dental care
Sensory issues
Medications and behavior
Adolescent issues
Behavioral deterioration
Complementary and alternative treatments
These pertinent subjects apply to most kids no matter where they fall on the autism spectrum. Issues are covered from birth through adolescence.
Parents can find answers to help them understand symptoms and behaviors, evaluate medications or alternative therapies, communicate with healthcare professionals, and deal with many other healthcare concerns. Based on the authors' years of clinical experience with hundreds of children with autism, this guide is an essential reference that should be on the shelf of every family with a child with an ASD.

Needs better editing.......2006-03-30
For any parent or professional seeking a book which will lead to guidance for specialized medical care, I do not recommend this book. The first chapters are very general and could apply to any child, with autism or not. Many of the medical suggestions are common sense parenting. In the chapter on "Safety" and in several others, it seems to be assumed that the autistic child is mobile. No mention is made of helmets or special equipment.
The mentions of referrals to specialists such as genetics, and opthamology do not give any concrete guidance as to what specific tests or outcomes are to be expected or conducted and I saw no mention that a Pediatric opthamologist might be preferred over a general one. I want to know what an opthamologist should be doing...what parts of the eyes or neural processing of sight can be tested and how and what will it mean. I want to know what gene sequences should be tested for assurance that the problem is autism and not genetic.
I found the section on neuropsychological/educational/developmental testing informative, but we are not at that stage yet.
What I did find especially distressing in a text/reader was litle mention of the importance of accepting and expecting delayed response times to stimuli. Current research in education suggests allowing a 5 second interval between command or stimuli and response because of delayed neural processing by autistic and PDD students. I have adapted my expectations with my nephew and find that he is actually responding just not a normal speed.
I found the question answer format of chapter review insulting. Summaries would have been better. Finally, even though the authors are from the U.S. much of the book reads as though it is for a British audience. The use of "she" to refer to the autistic child is perplexing as males are more likely to be affected than females.
I expected more due to the five star ratings, but was sorry for the purchase.
By a leading medical authority on autism.......2004-05-16
Fred Volkmar is a leading medical authority on autism and director of the Developmental Disabilities Clinic and Research Program at the Yale University Child Study Center. Lisa Wiesner is a pediatrician with a special focus on pediatric autism. Dr. Volkmar and Dr. Wiesner draw upon their considerable expertise and experience in Healthcare For Children On The Autism Spectrum: A Guide To Medical, Nutritional, And Behavior Issues to provide up to date and fully accessible information for parents and care-takers on children with autism ranging from birth through adolescence. The subject areas comprehensively range from growth and nutrition, seizures, dental care, sensory issues, adolescent issues, developmental deterioration, and ASD diagnosis, to sleep, complementary and alternative treatments, safety issues, medications and behavior, doctor and hospital visits, raising a healthy child, and providing parents with an overview of autism and related conditions. Healthcare For Children On The Autism Spectrum is vitally important and urgently recommended reading for any parent or caretaker charged with the responsibilities arising from children with any degree of autistic behavior.
Fills a real need.......2004-02-08
I am a physician and have looked for years for a book that would talk about medical care for children with autism and have now found it. This book is going to be a great resource for parents and teachers; it offers some good information to health care providers as well. It is balanced. Offers good coverage of a range of issues. The section on insurance is great - I don't know why the authors didn't put it early on in the book (they put it as an appendix)! The chapter on alternative treatments is very well done. Many great tips for managing office visits, the ER, hospitals, etc. Great reading list -Worth every penny!
a great source of practical knowledgeable information.......2004-02-07
This book provides a great deal of practical information for the parent of a child with autism. Routine health care visits and dental appointments and such can be incredibly stressful for children with autism and their parents, and the book provides practical advice on these issues. Another helpful chapter was that on using medication or other kinds of non medical treatments that you can find on the internet. There's so much information out there that it helps to have two authoritative voices helping one to sort these things through.

Book Description
One Bowl proposes a simple but extraordinarily powerful idea: By adopting a single bowl as the vessel for your meals, you will become more aware of the food you eat, how you eat, and the effects (large and small) of particular foods on your body and your spiritual and physical well-being. Author Don Gerrard guides us through every process of adapting to the one-bowl philosophy of eating, including choosing a bowl, deciding what to fill it with, and being attentive to every stage of eating and digestion. Although not rooted in any single spiritual tradition, One Bowl is certain to resonate with everyone who can appreciate that the Buddha, for example, ate out of one bowl, in silence, whether eating by himself or in a group. The book is beautifully illustrated with black-and-white photos throughout.

An interesting book.......2007-08-01
This was an interesting book. The premise is that by eating all meals in a mindful manner, while holding the bowl in your hand and eating alone, you will transform not only your food intake, but other areas of your life. I think that there are many lessons that can be taken from this book, especially for those attempting to eat more intuitively and live life with more consciousness. I don't see being able to adopt the one-bowl method as a lifestyle unless you live alone or have a family who does not mind doing the same. Many of the books that the author recommends for further reading have been out of print (he acknowledges this in the book) since the 70s. This whole book just kept reminding me of something that might have come out of the Esalen Institute in the 60s.
So, will this totally work for the majority of people living in modern society in the new millenium? Probably not. Can you get some good ideas and find exercises that might help you on your journey to more mindful living? Yes, I think so. It's definitely worth reading.
One Bowl Concept.......2005-09-12
Excellent method with philosophical and spiritual overtones to assist you to gain perspective and "control" of your eating and your entire point of view about food and meal times.
Well done.
easy 5 stars.......2004-03-02
I second hal's review - i had this book when it came out in the 70's. Don't know how it got away from me - probably loaned it to someone. But I've followed its advice, loosely, over the years and through 3 or 4 treasured bowls that got chipped, cracked, or whatever, and replaced. Now and then I've told people about it - "...there was this book, called One Bowl....". today it occurred to me to check Amazon to see if it's still available, and, Yay! It is! Into the ol' cart!
PS - my current bowl is an Oxo - Amazon carries them in Kitchen. White plastic doesn't have the ambience of raku, but I'm not one who looks down on plastic - matter of fact I'm grateful for it! As with everything, if you want it to have nice vibes, GIVE it some!
A Path Back to Trusting Our Bodies.......2001-07-14
This book is a classic food book. It's first manifestation was way back in the 70s, a thin volume that nevertheless was packed with wisdom about how to get back in touch with our bodies and our nutritional needs. Nearly 30 years later its prescriptions, or perhaps I should say "non-prescriptions," still hold as true as ever. The author tells us, in a warm but informative way, how to read our bodies inner messages about what we need to stay healthy. The key is eating from one bowl and paying attention in some very unusual ways--at least unusual in today's culture--to foods that "hum," for example, and how we can make use of this information for making healthy choices. I think that one of the greatest contributions this book makes is that it teaches us how to make choices from the inside out--choices that bring us closer to our bodies and closer to ourselves.
Book Description
In a nutshell, bowl food is relaxed eating. Depending on your mood, you can slow simmer a fiery curry, put together a luscious pasta dish, or simply toss a few fresh ingredients in a wok. Take the tedium out of salad and pasta without all the mess. All that remains is to lift your spoon and eat with pleasure.

Great Recipes for Those with Time on Their Hands.......2006-06-05
I was delighted with Bowl Food from the moment my sister brought it home, with its adorable concept and full-color pictures for every recipe. I immediately flagged multiple recipes to try, and have found several that have become staples for dinner parties (the Sweet Potato Salad is particularly impressive when trying to win over non-vegetarians) and for every-day dinners as well (the asparagus risotto is a tasty recipe and easy for those making their first foray into risottos). There are plenty of vegetarian recipes (I'd say at least 25%) and many others can be converted to vegetarian with a few easy substitutions. However, be aware that the majority of these recipes call for time-consuming prep and exotic ingredients. This book as a whole is not for the everyday home cook with a fulltime job--it's for weekend experimentation. While some recipes can still be explored without all the prep if you have a good local market (for example, if you can buy paneer cheese instead of making it!), many require a search for ingredients you may have never heard of.
If you like adventurous eating and spending hours in the kitchen is sometimes fun for you, you'll like this book. If not, buy it for a friend who adores cooking, and then borrow it to copy down the quick and easy recipes.
Life made easier.......2006-03-16
I work full-time and go to school full-time and this book has been a lifesavor! It provides nutritious meals that are quick and most of them are great as leftovers! I highly recommend this book to any busy person!
Intriguing, but relies on many non-staple ingredients.......2005-03-01
This book was recommended to me by an employee at LA's famous Cook's Library bookstore, a haven for cooks and cookbook lovers. I had been searching for a well-rounded book emphasizing one-dish entrees for midweek cooking. Though the subtitle suggests just that (Comfort Food for People on the Move), many ingredients can't easily be found at supermarkets.
The recipes are divided into soups, salads, pasta, rice, wok dishes, curries and one-pots. For the most part, the recipes are inspired formulas featuring cuisines from many parts of the world, with a decidedly Asian bias.
I've prepared many of the dishes, but on weekends only, since most recipes call for at least one non-staple ingredient. During the week, the thought of having to stop at one or two stores on the way home in search of galangal, kaffir lime leaves, saffron threads, ponzu, brown bean sauce or mirin is a little overwhelming. The above mentioned ingredients and many others called for in this cookbook usually require a bit of searching, something I only have time for on a luxurious Saturday. That said, the recipes are quite good and appeal best to those with somewhat ambitious palates.
One more thing: Bowl Food is small (appx. 7.5" x 5.5") but is nearly 400 pages. The binding is so thick, it's impossible to keep the book open while cooking, which I find annoying.
Best eclectic recipe book.......2004-03-29
This book is fantastic. With pictures for every single recipe, and over 200 dishes, it has become one of my favourites to flip through to decide what to have for dinner.
Recipes are easy to follow, have clear instructions for special ingredients, mostly can be prepared in less than an hour, and most rely on easy-to-obtain ingredients. Greatly appreciated that they wrote tips like to obtain 1.75 lbs pounds prepared squash, you'd need to by 3 lbs at the store. Several ingredients can easily be replaced with similar items.
Excellent variety of asian-inspired and mediteranian dishes. EVERYTHING has turned out really well in this book. I have not yet been disappointed.
All in One Bowl!.......2003-02-22
BOWL FOOD:
Comfort Food for People on the Move.
Published by Laurel Glen of San Diego
Basic in concept, bowl food has been around for hundred's of years, just now moving into North America. Many primitive people used half coconuts or gourds to hold their food. Although we have evolved to the use of flat plates, knives, spoons and forks, we should no longer think of bowls as necessary only with breakfast cereals, stews, and soups. Bowls are no longer the exclusive domain of Asian cultures.
People have shortened time in their lives these days. When making most bowl foods, complete all your chopping to bite-sized pieces before cooking. Separate into piles which cook in similar lengths of time. Cooking time for most recipes is brief. A lite, balanced meal in just one bowl, nestled into the palm of your hand makes for a cozy time at the computer or TV. Forget knives, formal tables with chairs -- maybe use a pair of chopsticks to keep your expertise alive.
It should be noted Bowl Food is an edited compilation of recipes, a collection from many food professionals. Each turn of almost 400 slick pages reveals a full-color picture of the finished bowl while opposite stands its easily understandable recipe. This is an excellent way to eat a lot of fresh, barely cooked veggies and maximize your nutritional intake.
Bowl Food's Contents include soups, salads, pasta dishes, rice, wok-stir fry, curries also one-pots. Some selections:
§ Spicy Squash and Coconut Soup rather crosses the Asian with the sturdy squash.
§ Pea and Arugula Soup is a lite, quickly-made health meal.
§ Shrimp, Potato and Corn Chowder smacks of New England.
§ Ramen Noodle Soup with Roast Pork and Greens, utilizes left-overs in simple, easy Asian dish.
§ Crab and Spinach Soba Noodle Salad is a delicately flavored salad simply made.
§ Pasta with Seared Shrimp includes red chilies and capers.
§ Madras Beef Curry is simple and transforms skirt steak into a rich dish.
§ Chicken and Mushroom Pilaf blends mushrooms, almonds and yogurt.
§ Shrimp and Snow Pea Stir-Fry is light, tasty and quick to make.
§ Spicy Sausage Stew is but one of the "One Pots" dishes in Bowl Food.
§ Chicken and Asparagus Risotto marries distinct flavors into a well-balanced meal.
§ Tomato Bread Soup reminds us of Italy.
§ Caramelized Onion and Parsnip Soup smacks of root cellars of New England.

ASIN: 9622097235 |
Book Description
Changing Rice Bowl deals with a topic of perennial interest to Chinese and non-Chinese alike: Chinese food. Chinese culture is exceptionally food-oriented, and non-Chinese are curious about what people in China actually eat, as contrasted with meals in Chinese restaurants. Furthermore, foreigners have long received the impression that Chinese people are inadequately fed, but the picture today is considerably more complex. At its best, the Chinese diet is among the world's healthiest, and access to adequate, nutritious food has made enormous progress in recent years. The content of the Chinese diet and its nutritional adequacy vary geographically, not only across China but even within one province. All these strands, examined after the end of food rationing opened new choices to Chinese consumers, are portrayed in a text that is easily accessible to the general public and that is supplemented with maps, graphs, and photographs.
Beginning with background concepts in nutrition, culture, and economic development, the book describes foods that Chinese traditionally eat and the farming system that has produced them for hundreds of years. A summary geography of Liaoning Province in China's northeast provides background for the detailed study of the dietary regime in a sample of households at five sites within the province. The book concludes with some suggestions of possible future implications of the findings.
