5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-22

I'm a Sports Science major with a concentration in Physical Therapy and this book was used for a undergrad Lifetime physical fitness class. Man, a lot of books lack key information needed in this field but this book is right on. The chapters are well put together in a great order. No skipping around chapters. It's a great beginners good. two thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you were afraid to ask about health.......2004-05-20

This is a solid book for teaching you the basics of leading a healthy life. For people not well educated on basic wellness ideas, this can be a godsend: it will guide you through many topics that are considered common knowledge but, unfortunately, probably aren't as well-known and properly understood as they should be.

Topics covered here include:
- basic methods to studying and eliminating unhealthy habits
- stress sources and management
- strength exercises, including photos and descriptions of many common ones: good for an exercise novice who'd like to avoid the embarrassment of looking totally confused at the gym (though there's no substitute to a trainer who knows what he's doing)
- healthy eating habits, and detailed analysis of carbs, fats, and other things food is made up of
- coverage of diseases, including STDs and other chronic illnesses

This book is great for independent study, which was the method I used it. Augmenting it with help from a teacher could highlight other areas the book doesn't go quite as in-depth into; in my class's studies, many web sites had to be visited, which added some good knowledge outside the book's scope. Also, each chapter seems to be a little long; splitting some chapters up into shorter sections would have made me feel like I was moving through the book quicker.

However, this is a quality-written book from McGraw Hill. It could be good for anyone, young or old, who doesn't know much but wants to learn how to live a healthy life. If you're looking to get into shape for the summer, but have never paid attention to your health habits before, this book can actually be quite a good starting point: it can help point out how certain foods will affect your body, and give you a quick overview of many common, effective, good exercises. Very recommended for either class or independent study.

1 out of 5 stars Too brief..........2005-09-26

I didn't have that high of expectations for a health book after the ones I had in middle and high school. However, this one proved to actually be worse than the ones from my public education.

The book doesn't go into much detail except in the chapters that show different physical exercises. Now I understand as well as any American student that being fit is a key component of health class, but there are other things that need to be taught, especially to college freshmen (the group who is most likely to use this book). They need to talk about things like abstaining from alcohol, drugs, and sex since the education they get in high school isn't enough. They also need to talk about good decision making, which is essential for college.

The physical exercises are the normal ones you'd find in any gym class and aren't anything revolutionary. Some of the labs seem a bit bogus in my opinion (in particular the sit and reach test since it isn't fair for people with short arms). The included CD, called HealthQuest, isn't bad, but is basically an electronic way to calculate everything in the book. There is some emphasis on dieting, which I also feel isn't the best topic for a health book since, like exercise, it varies from person to person. A football player obviously needs more in his system than a 4'11" girl who doesn't play sports.

The pages are designed to rip out of the book but they don't rip out well. The edge usually looks like a dog just took a bite out of it.

The CD and the journal give this text the one star I awarded it. Because your professor will likely make you rip out the pages these books have no value used.

5 out of 5 stars My kids LOVE this book.......2007-01-09

I bought this for my step kids for our weekly "kids cook night". There are lots of fun things for them to make but there aren't a ton of dinner dishes in here.

3 out of 5 stars For kids only, not the adults.......2007-01-06

This is a good basic, and I mean basic cookbook to get the kids involved, but I wouldnt use it daily. Its too simple for the average cook. I would not pay more than what Amazon wants though.

If your party planning has you paralyzed by visions of serving pimiento loaf paired with the Pi˜a Coladas, fear not. Sophisticated help is on the way with Cocktail Food, a collection of 50 intriguing, anything-but-ordinary hors d'oeuvres compiled and tested by sisters Mary Corpening Barber and Sara Corpening Whiteford, with collaborator Lori Lyn Narlock. In an easy-to-follow, uncluttered format perfect for the moderately accomplished kitchen hand, the authors present globally influenced recipes to pair with a wide range of libations.

Suggested snacks to serve with "travel agents"--those brolly-festooned tropical drinks that instantly transport you to de eye-lind, mahn--include Figs in a Blanket, a gorgeous canvas of fresh fig and Gorgonzola brushed with balsamic and walnut oil, then wrapped in prosciutto; and 'ZA!, mini-English-muffin pizzas with Cambozola and sun-dried tomatoes.

Some recipes require minimal prep or cook time. Spear Ecstasy, asparagus with a lemon-tarragon dip, and the Caprese Skewers--made with cherry tomato, mozzarella, and basil--are simplicity itself. But working with phyllo dough, a key ingredient in Mary's Little Lambs, has driven more than one talented amateur chef to swill down the cooking sherry. And a couple of the recipes could get spendy for your little clambake: the authors launch a preemptive strike at anyone intending to substitute lumpfish in their Eggstravaganza! by calling for high-quality caviar. But perhaps a question posed on the back of the book's dust jacket says it best: "Would Holly Golightly settle for chips and dip?" Maybe Tiffany's is no longer serving breakfast, but armed with Cocktail Food, they'd lay on one heck of a happy hour. --Tony Mason

    Book Description

The clink of glasses, the popping of corks, the spirited chatter of good friends-what more does an impromptu get-together need? Why, fabulous snacks, of course! With Cocktail Food, you can kiss those boring raw veggies goodbye because the best-selling authors of Smoothies and Wraps are whipping up bite-size delights like Shrimply Delish, Wonton Wonders, and Chive Talkin' Scallops. Voil ! A humdrum happy hour turns into a glamorous soir e. Cocktail Food takes the jitters out of entertaining with simple yet stylish recipes, plus great party-planning tips and fun theme ideas from Highball Sprees to Frozen F'tes. Let the good times roll!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best cocktail food cookbook ever.......2007-01-11

I bought 5 copies to give as gifts at parties because everytime i make something from this, everyone asks for the recipe. It's the best & the recipes are easy.

4 out of 5 stars The Corpening Sisters Do It Again.......2004-05-06

"Cocktail Food: 50 Finger Foods with Attitude" is my third cookbook by the Corpening sisters. The other two are "Wraps" and "Smoothies," and they're every bit as good. These women have a knack for often unusual, very flavorful food with very strange names. This book includes a number of good hints for any occasion at which you wish to serve finger food. They even give figures for how many hors d'oeuvres and drinks to serve. Then you'll find directions for pairing hors d'eouvres with drinks, and a couple of "themes" for possible parties.

Weird recipe names is one way in which this cookbook stands out. How could you forget a cookbook with recipes like "oink!" and "steaked and thai-ed?" Mind you, when someone asks me what those marvelous little delicacies are over there on the table, you can bet I'll be saying "oh, that's skewered thai-style steak with lime, jalapeno, and mint." Unless, of course, the questioner is either a very good friend or someone I'd like to irritate.

"Bold flavors" has become a cliche. When I think of bold in relation to cooking I think of bland A-1 steak sauce ads. But when the Corpening sisters get together, bold is the most appropriate adjective I can think of. Bayou Biscuits give you the distinctive flavor of Andouille sausage. Delhi Blues is a combination of blue cheese and walnut shortbread with chutney! The Smoked Salmon Bonbons are exquisite. We like to use the tahini-ginger dipping sauce that's meant to go with shrimp and serve it with shrimp chips instead.

You'll find more recipes like this throughout the book--bold, exquisite symphonies of flavor that bowl you over. However, because the flavors are so strong, a few of them are almost bound to be ones you find unpleasant. No matter how they dress it up, I'll never do more than shrug over shrimp, and no one will ever convince me to eat a dish with onion as a main ingredient. For you it might be the radishes, or maybe the aforementioned blue cheese. This book is certainly worth a buy, though, regardless of whether you like cocktail parties. It may only contain 50 recipes, but they're recipes that pack a lot of punch!

5 out of 5 stars Best Ever Party Food.......2004-01-29

I have used the recipes from this book about a dozen times and am asked for the recipe for at least one dish every time. I currenlty use about 15 of the recipes and have found no need to modify any. As with any cookbook many of the recipes did not meet my need, but this book is my primary resource when planning a appetizers for a party.

2 out of 5 stars Some recipes aren't quite there yet.......2003-05-02

I've owned this book for over a year and have used it when planning for a few parties. Some of the recipes are excellent, but others just don't taste good. I am an avid cook, and have had to improvise a number of times when the finished recipe was completed because the appetizer was close to tasteless (example: the dipping sauce for the Rockin Rubens as well as the Rockin Ruben breadsticks themselves; Dab a Crab was dab-a-boring).

I have found that I use Cocktail Food now more for inspiration than to follow the actual recipes. I too found the recipe names a little too cute, so most of the time my appetizers go incognito when people ask about the actual names.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent handbook.......2003-01-18

Bought this book on a whim at the UCLA book fair. Have used recipes from it for two parties and received rave reviews! Love the mushroom in puff pastry, pepperoni pinwheels, and the shrimp with sesame seed recipes in particular. (Keep in mind that I also believe that puff pastry should be made a food group...so I may be biased.) I do agree that the recipe names are a little cutsie and annoying, but do NOT let that get in your way. It's chock full of great recipes that are easy to make and very good tasting. The fact that my very picky gourmet cook of an aunt liked what I made from here validated the purchase in a heartbeat.

Yes, it's quirky (read: British-oriented with all the cute spelling and different names for food items), but the recipes are grouped usefully, the recipes look delicious and not painstaking to prepare, and the recipes also are not of food that's too esoteric to get ahold of at a good supermarket, for the most part.

There is lots of useful, practical information on hosting a party, including etiquette tips. And what is especially useful is the VARIETY of types of parties/occasions/celebrations this book provides pertinent information on.

Also, the presentatin is fabulous with great pictures, diagrams, etc.

If you ever want to host a party --be it a gala for 100+ or yummy snacks for friends on Oscar night or an intimate picnic....BUY THIS BOOK!

Martha Stewart's Hors d'Oeuvres is classic Martha--it's all about food, glorious food. Not just any food, either--it's about hors d'oeuvres. And you know how much Martha loves these tasty little nibbles. This book presents more than 150 recipes organized into 13 sample menus tailored to a wide variety of events. There's a Christmas cocktail party, with a Savory Wreath and Skewered Tortellini with Roasted Garlic Garnish; Seafood at the Beach featuring Goujonettes of Sole and Grilled Scallops with Chervil and Fennel; and Oriental Cocktails in the Parlor with Chinese Pearl Balls and Tea-Smoked Eggs. The recipes are garnished with plenty of advice--from useful tips on make-ahead dishes to the "I wish" advice like "it is difficult to ensure perfect service with fewer than four [servers] for 24 to 36 guests." The book is also useful for picking and choosing hors d'oeuvres for your own events. Even if you aren't planning a "grand and elegant" party for hundreds, you may well enjoy the recipe for Clams with Golden Caviar and Italian Parsley, Saucisson en Croûte, or Corn Muffins with Smoked Turkey. The book is, predictably, full of beautiful photographs--so whether you're really planning a "valentines and champagne" party for 50, an intimate tea party in the kitchen, or just indulging in a little gastronomy, Martha Stewart's Hors d'Oeuvres will please Marthaphiles and general readers alike. --C.B. Delaney

1 out of 5 stars I did my best but the guests hated the Hors D'Oeuvres.......2003-01-09

The guests hated the finger food and I would think there are better books on the subject. I am terrified to visit the golf & tennis club after the dinner debacle. Maybe Martha's finger food was well received in Nutley, NJ but in Short Hills it was another story.

    2 out of 5 stars Wellll--.......2001-11-28

This is great if you have all the time and money to spend on Hors D'Oeuvres--I would not buy it again, but it was fun to look at.

5 out of 5 stars Solid First Course Helper of a Cookbook.......2001-02-04

I've enjoyed this one so much {'ve moved on to her new Hors d'Oeuvres Handbook. However, this one has much in it, so to get this one as well and use it.

Some of my all=time favorites are here: Apples with chicken liver pate, Orange muffins with Smoked Turkey, and Roquefort Grapes.

I find this a useful book in its structure by function: Tea Party, Christmas Cocktails, Outdoor Barbe, etc. Bonus as in all her cookbooks, fantastic clear photos and marvelous creative ways to serve an eye=catching, tastebud wowing first course!

5 out of 5 stars Tastes as good as it reads!.......2000-01-19

This is a fabulous book. I received it as a Christmas gift when it was first published. I read and re-read the recipes, and was frankly overwhelmed. Not by the recipes, but the pictures. So, I fantasized about making the foods. I didn't venture to attempt the recipes for several months.

I attended a reception at the Schomburg Center in NYC, and as I ate the great foods, I had a sense of dejavu. I thought, "Oh my goodness, these are the Martha recipes." I quickly asked a member of the wait staff for more info on the horsdouvres, and sure enough, they came from this book. After that, I went to the kitchen, and began cooking.

These are some of the most reliable recipes you will ever have. The instructions are perfect, and you too can create these marvelous dishes. To quote you know who, "It's a good thing."

P.S. I loaned my book out, and never got it back. I am ordering a new one from Amazon.com.

3 out of 5 stars Great hors d'oeuvres, if you have the time.......1998-08-04

As much as I like Martha Stewart, I have to say - Who has the time to entertain like that? Martha's recipes are great, but not all are simple. Entertaining should be easy and fun. Not complicated with hard to find ingredients.

5 out of 5 stars Preschoolers top book - A must for a home library too........2006-12-28

This story is cute - My daugher at age 4 at the time was in preschool and daily and I mean daily the boys would get this book prior to the girls getting it so it was a game every day to see who could obtain this book first...they never fought over any book but this one and the library had lots of books to choose from....anyways the girls and boys were fighting and pulling on the book one day that the book got ripped and the teachers had - really had enough of that book at that point and threw it away to teach the children a hard lesson in life.....meanwhile I had no idea as to what the teachers had done except for the fact that my daughter and her best friend came home crying that the book with the elephant and the peanuts got thrown out and why? the full explanation was there by them and they were devastasted..thinking that my child ripped a book so badly I immediatly went to Amazon and ordered it and sent it in with the two girls one day - the teachers look on their faces were priceless....every year both preschool classes always fought over the book and they were happy to finally get rid of a book that was always fought over ....and here we were bringing a new copy back....it was priceless an another year childrens will still be able to fight over it...tee-hee....I bought one for home and my daughters best friend....so now it is not a big deal if the boys get it right? We have our own copy....must have book really cute and the graphics are adorable.

5 out of 5 stars My 2 1/2 year old doesn't stop asking for this one!.......2001-08-16

My 2 1/2 year old daughter LOVES this book. Every night before we go to bed, she asks to read "Peanut butter, Peanut butter". She's already learned the rhymes, I say a part, and she knows when she needs to chime in! I also love Nadine Bernard Westcott's illustrations -- I've begun to search for and buy all of her books! Truly enjoyable for both the child and the adult!!

5 out of 5 stars My five year old loves this book and can read it!.......1998-12-02

I had to buy this book because my five year old daughter keeps checking it out of the library. When I told her she had to check out another book this week she said, "Why, Mom? This is a GREAT book!" That is definitely one to have on our shelf. The pictures are delightful and the repetitive phrasing makes it easy to read yet there are some tough words which she has mastered because she knows the phrasing. I wish every book I purchased would pay off so well. She also said, "Mom, if you look at the pictures you just have to giggle."

4 out of 5 stars A good cookbook for any occasion........2007-02-02

I recently purchased this book, having spotted it in a discount stack. It is very thoughtfully laid out, with excellent instructions and illustrations. The 400 items for which recipes are provided look appetizing and sufficiently distinctive to make for interesting parties and meals. The title, in fact, may be misleading because the book addresses not only appetizers and finger food but most kinds of food that one might consider for special occasions. Published in Great Britain it evidences throughout a concern for quality, both in the book itself and in the snacks and meals that may come from it.
