Book Description
Sexually transmitted diseases among teens has become a full blown epidemic-- a national emergency that's killing our kids. In this groundbreaking book Dr. Meeker uncovers the story of this serious epidemic and the pattern of political correctness and marketing hype that has caused this tidal wave of disease.
Customer Reviews:
Timely and Full of Truth.......2007-10-05
The truth hurts and is difficult to read sometimes but facts don't like. Meg Meekers research and assessment of the dangers that face our kids is real and present as any danger today. Love you kids, read the book.
Meeker is out of touch with reality........2006-07-31
I have read Meeker's book, and find it totally devoid of factual information or a sex-positive approach. It is the same old "just say no" approach, which is never going to click with today's teenagers. Like Josh McDowell and Pam Stenzel, she is irresponsible in not telling the truth about sex. Forget her.
not worth the paper it's printed on.......2006-03-22
As an epidemiologist with a PhD, and a focus on adolescent health, I found this book terrible. Dr. Meeker states things that are simply WRONG and have been shown in scientific literature. Specifically on page 146 she says that "the risk of contracting and STD through oral is extremely high." At the time of publication of her book, this was NOT shown. Since that time, the most definitive study shows that there is no risk: del Romero J, Marincovich B, Castilla J, Garcia S, Campo J, Hernando V, et al. Evaluating the risk of HIV transmission through unprotected orogenital sex. AIDS 2002;16(9):1296-7.
Moreover, several studies have shown that virginity pledges, etc can put teens at higher risk of STDs because those who make such pledges are LESS likely to have condoms when they do have their first sexual intercourse, which eventually happens before marriage. Furthermore, none of these messages reduce the chance of having an STD later in life as young adults.
Generally Dr. Meeker mixes stories about her patients with a non-critical, non-scientific manipulation of scientific literature to promote an alarmist agenda that is not helpful and probably damaging. Condoms prevent STD transmission and teens have sex. Face it and deal with it.
How Teen Sex Is Killing Our Kids.......2005-01-01
If all the teenagers in the world read this book, there would have been a sea change in their attitude towards their no-holds-barred sexual revolution. Earlier there were only two diseases syphilis and gonorrhoea and now there is more than a 100 and they are increasing at an extremely fearful pace. Many of these have no remedies so far and the people getting killed by these diseases are increasing on a daily basis.
The author mentioned, in an interview, what helped to complete the book. Kicking the coffee habit. Said drinking it clouded creativity. I agree too, and stopped completely a few weeks ago, with the help of a coffee replacement. It's called s o y f e e and I simply love it. Made from s o y that you brew just like coffee. I even like it better than the real stuff. Look for it at www.s oycoffee.com.
Straight talk our children deserve to hear.......2004-11-24
Epidemic may not be too strong of a word to describe the crisis in teen sexuality we face in the Western world. Although this volume describes the American scene, it would be true of most other Western nations as well. Young people have been sold a bill of goods regarding sexuality, and they are paying the penalty, big time.
Consider some of the statistics: In the US in 2002 up to one quarter of sexually active teens were living with a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Each year over 15 million Americans will contract a new STD. Around a fifth of these will be teenagers. Indeed, while teens make up just 10 percent of the population, they account for 25 per cent of all STDs.
The truth is, the sexual revolution of the 60s has unleashed an untamed monster. When I was growing up one seldom heard of venereal diseases, as they were then called. And there were really only two: syphilis and gonorrhoea. And they tended to be something people other than sailors and prostitutes never worried about. Today there are at least 50 STDs. And with multiple strains of mutating viruses, that actual number may be as high as 100.
Thus a whole new batch of STDs have emerged in line with the no-holds-barred sexual revolution. Chlamydia for example was not even identified until 1976. Thus we have a whole new vocabulary as part of our dictionaries, with disease like genital herpes, HPV, HIV, and a range of new viral infections.
And the problem is many of these diseases are at present incurable (like HIV) and many are asymptomatic (that is one often does not even know one has the infection). And many are quite infectious, easily spread, and hard to control. Herpes for example lives on the skin and is easily passed on.
While antibiotics can stop bacterial STDs (like chlamydia) they cannot stop viruses. And even the bacteria are hard to control, with many mutating into more devious germs, becoming resistant to antibiotics.
Doctor Meegan does not just warn against the physical dangers of casual sex. She also speaks to the emotional, psychological and social harms. The safe sex myth (just use a condom, etc) is not only physically harmful, as most contraceptives are far from foolproof, but the risks of a broken promise, a broken relationship, and a broken heart cannot be protected by the condom culture.
Dr Meeker reminds us that teens are especially vulnerable to negative emotional and psychological side effects due to early sexual activity. And that translates into an epidemic of teen depression and suicide. And the problem compounds itself. Depressed kids in turn are more likely to turn to sex, as many turn to drugs, to deal with their grief.
Losing one's virginity at an early age often leads to a loss in self respect and self worth. A loss of trust and expectation also is part of the downside. The innocence of childhood is ripped away and replaced with a premature burden of adulthood.
The truth is, the condom culture and the explosion in comprehensive sex education have not helped matters, but made them worse. We have never before had so much sex ed, and we have never before had so much teen sexuality, abortion and STDs. There seems to be a clear correlation between the two.
And a major missing ingredient in most sex ed courses is what teens really need to hear: how to say no to sexual pressure. Abstinence before marriage and faithfulness in marriage is the only guaranteed safe sex. Yet this message is seldom being taught to our young people. It certainly is not the message of popular culture.
Critics will simply shrug off this volume and accuse the author of scare mongering. But try telling that to a young person who is now permanently affected by an STD. Try telling that to a young girl whose future is in doubt because sexual experimentation has lead to an unwanted pregnancy. Try telling that to those who have become infertile due to promiscuous sexual activity.
The consequences of the sexual revolution are very real indeed. It is time we had some straight talk on the many dangers of, and downsides to, teenage sex. The good news is we are not animals and we can control our desires. But when all around us are telling our young people that they should just go for it, the message of sexual responsibility is easily drowned out. Thus the importance of this book.

TEQUILA (COOKING WITH THE SPIRIT OF MEXICO).......2007-04-18
A real dandy.... What a great book on all things Tequila. This lady has taken her life experience's and capsulated them into a wonderful book that all will embellish.Recipes galore for your required taste and then some. I have alerted many of my friends as well as ordered this book for those most dear to me.
If you are into culinary delights this is the book for you and a great conversational book to share with friends.
A delightful cookbook, great party suggestions........1999-09-13
The first "cookbook that I've read cover to cover! A wonderful combination of party recipes, information about tequila, stories of rural Mexico, and beautiful folk art, this book makes a wonderful gift and an indispensable addition for the library to anyone who likes to give parties. Reading this book will go a long way towards making you a connoisseur of tequila and margaritas (going out and sampling the wide variety of tequila will complete your education). The party recipes are intriguing and the suggestions for presentation and will help make your next "Mexican" theme party a great success. I heartily recommend this little gem of a book.
Book Description
An appreciation and celebration of one of the most popular liquors in the world, including ratings of more than 100 brands.
Tequila today is one of the fastest-growing liquors in the world, and the growth is decidedly upscale. An entire tequila culture has developed, not only throughout Mexico but in sophisticated restaurants and bars all over the world, from New York to Los Angeles, London to Tokyo.
Despite this trend, little has been published about tequila and its origins, varieties, and method of productionuntil now. In this delightfully visual book, author Enrique Martnez Limn takes the reader on a fascinating anecdotal journey through the history of tequila, providing complete information about how it is produced and descriptions of its legends, heroes, songs, and artistic manifestations. In addition, there are recipes for tequila-based cocktails and for dishes using tequila, as well as professional ratings of more than a hundred brands. The lively text is enhanced by Michael Calderwood's beautiful photography and the specially commissioned artwork.

Myths, facts and incredible pictures.......2002-11-06
The book begins with an excellent introduction by Mexican soclal commentary critic at large Carlos Monsivais. His thoughts set the groundwork for a book that is not only beautiful but fascinating. The contributing authors have worked together to produce a table top book that is interesting and a spectacular visual delight. The highlight of this book is the superb photographs by Michael Calderwood ; he shows his love for Mexico through his absolute stunning photography. The book has a sprinkling of information from various areas of interest on the subject of tequila. Beginning with a clarification on the myths surrounding tequila and it's source, the book is lucid, entertaining and informative. Reading this book is like taking a journey, discovering the past , present and future of tequila and the culture surrounding Mexico's national drink. The history discussed is interesting but covered only slightly for nice light reading. Included is the process of extracting the liquid and fermenting this traditional drink that is steeped deep in the culture. Other drinks are discuused for clarification , most notably pulque and mezcal. I found the procees of extracting and making the liquid most interesting. Much of the book is devoted to discussing the top brands, many of which are hard to find but for the dedicated aficionado obtainable. Included are recipes that have made tequila known besides the classic international margarita. In short, there is something to learn by most people in this book. If you are interested in knowing a little something about tequila than get this book. An excellent introduction to the subject that has pictures worth the price of the book. For those that would like to read this book in Spanish there is a version available. So, get this book, sit back, serve yourself some anejo, sip and enjoy the trip through Mexico and the areas that produce tequila.
An exquisite tribute to tequila and Mexico.......2002-02-09
Limon's warm, often poetic text is well-complemented by Calderwood's beautiful photography. This coffee-table book presents not just tequila, but Mexico. It is a tribute to the people who make it, to the land where the agave grows, and to tequila's place and role. This is not an in-depth guide like Cutler or Emmons offers, but it embraces the variety and depth of tequila's rich culture in Mexico. It's an enjoyable read and a terrific presentation.
Not a book I would recommend for tequila aficionados.......2000-04-27
In my opinion to flashy, they are only taking advantage of the popularity of tequila, you can not even find it in Mexico. I would recommend much more books like "The Book of Tequila" by Mr. Emmons with real facts and tequila information.
Simply Marvelous.......2000-04-22
I believe this is the best representation of "the spirit of Mexico" that I have ever had the privlege of reading. The pictures portrayed the content of the text excellently. My brother, James, found page 135 absolutely stimulating! Bridget Galsworthy - you have outdone yourself!
Spirited Tequila.......2000-04-21
With luxurious photography, Tequila the Spirit of Mexico cannot go wrong. But there is something schizophrenic about it: so much good background information, but too much minutae that quickly puts such a book out of date. Distillery production in 1999, names, addresses. As a resource book, it is still good: but I would also have liked a stronger hand in its editing: the definition of joven or white/silver contradicts itself in two different areas, and the mention of the Mexican movie industry's influence on the beverage could easily have been consolidated. All in all, I would have preferred a cheaper edition in paperback that I could easily replace when the text soon falls out of date. But the photos are stunning.
Book Description
The first part of the book explains how agave is grown, harvested, fermented, and distilled to become tequila. The second part comprises the most extensive tasting of tequila ever attempted by a professional tasting panel with actual descriptions of more than 85 tequilas. Finally, for those adventurers looking for a tequila based vacation. There are maps. hotel and restaurant recommendations, and specific information to create your own Mexican tequila holiday.
Customer Reviews:
Educational, informative, and very entertaining.......1999-08-28
This book captures the essence of Tequila from the perspective of making it and drinking it. I found it especially interesting in giving the reader a glimpse into the day to day activities of the tequila business.
Awesome reference guide for all things tequila!.......1999-07-26
Lance and Sandys adventure in the land of Tequila is not only entertaining but a highly informative read on the growing world of tequila. A must-have reference guide to take you thru the various types available, written by someone who obviously has had a few! I like the tasting pyramid too.
The distillation of tequila as explained by Lance Cutler........1999-02-26
For the tequila lover, this book is worth checking out simply for the explanation of the different ways that tequila is produced, from archaic to ultra modern. The information on the different types of tequila, the different nuances of types, basic information about traveling in the region, and the food of the region are a huge plus.
Excellent research, yet very readable.......1998-12-02
A well written and entertaining book on tequila, with the inside scoop on the various distilleries and the house "style". Some serious taste testing was done, with detailed descriptions. The only minor disappointment is that he does not actually rate the tequilas.
The only tequila book you will ever need........1998-09-27
Not only is the writing great, and the information complete, but there is a tasting pyramid that breaks down the tasting of tequila into all its difference nuances, and it is amazingly exact. The travel info about Mexico is very good, and the discussion of the process of making tequila is clear and informative. A good read and a great reference.
Book Description
This entertaining travelogue delves into the locales, festivities, and history related to Mexico's most famous libations. Each of the chapters focuses on a specific beverage as well as the region of the country most closely associated with that particular drink as seen through the eyes of a U.S. couple. The authors describe a wealth of interesting characters as they travel the country to unearth the traditions and unique culture associated with each drink and its corresponding location.
Customer Reviews:
An inspired blend of travelogue and cultural insight makes for lively reading indeed.......2006-03-03
Liquid Mexico: Festive Spirits, Tequila Culture, & The Infamous Worm is a 'must' for any who love Mexico: it examines the locales, festivities and history surrounding Mexican drinks, using specific beverage as cultural indicators for exploring Mexican heritage. Chapters blend in the authors' travel experiences throughout Mexico in chapters which range from 'Margarita' and 'Beers' to 'Sangrita'. An inspired blend of travelogue and cultural insight makes for lively reading indeed.
Entertaining..........2006-01-07
I was impressed by the numerous bibliographical references at the end of each chapter. I was expecting a simple book on drinking and traveling, but obviously a lot of serious research went into this book. Great reading for the beach or library.
Mexico Traveler's Treasure!.......2005-12-17
This is a great book. Even though it's about alcohol, it's not really about drinking. It's way more about the history and culture that surrounds the drinks. If you like Mexico, even if you're a teetotaler, you'll like this book.
Fun (and useful) Book!.......2005-12-15
This couple went on some fun adventures in Mexico, did some great research on the history of the drinks mentioned in the book (tequila, mezcal, margaritas, Corona, etc), and put it together in a highly entertaining format. I think any arm chair traveler would get a kick out of reading this -- I did.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent primer........2001-10-20
I found this book to be very comprehensive on the history and process of tequilla making. The focus on the process is more in depth than the Mesa Grill Guide to Tequila. The book surveys various quality tequilla producers and distilleries. There is also a section on organizing a tequilla tasting. I would recommend this book if you are the type of person who enjoys developing hobbies over a medium to long term timeframe, or if you are a seasoned wine or beer taster. The content is beginning to show its age however, as descriptions of many newer brands tequilas I have encountered in restaurants cannot be found in the text.
The most factual, comprehensive book about tequila.......1999-02-08
Bob Emmons has done his homework. He is painstakingly accurate. His tequila facts read a bit like a textbook and his stories, one from almost every distillery, read like prose. You cannot ask for.
He lets the reader know what an NOM number is and what it means. He shows which distilleries make only one unique brand and which make dozens of brands using the same tequila in all brands
If you are serious about tequila, this book is a must.
Best Tequila Reference Book Available.......1999-01-05
This book will not sit on your bookshelf!
New tequilas have come to the market since this book was written. But the reference guide in the book is so complete that it's easy to look up a NOM, find which distillery it was made at, and see which other products on the market are made from that same distillery. There is also a lot of personal tasting notes on all the major tequilas available written by Bob Emmons that I find very interesting.
This book has helped me immensely and I recommend it to anyone interested in setting up their own tasting panels, mixing margaritas or drinking straight super premium tequilas, or even visiting the tequila producing areas and distilleries that actually Bob does not recommend.
This book will make converts!.......1997-06-04
I have just read this book. I never thought I could read a book about any distilled spirit, much less tequila, all the way through. "We all think we know what tequila is," says Emmons, but we're wrong! Tequila is something totally different. Most of the tequila sold in the U.S. is complete crud, and Emmons explains exactly why. I've never read a book before that made me feel like a total expert overnight. The only tequila worth tasting is 100 percent agave. Emmons explains how the agave plant is grown, and what they do to the lowlife tequilas to make them taste so bad. Some surprises here: There is never a worm in tequila (there is sometimes a worm in mescal, a totally different drink, but never in the best quality mescals). Tequila is not made from cactus. The best tequila no longer comes from the town of Tequila, but from the high mountain slopes to the east. Something like tequila has been drunk by both sides in all civil conflicts in Mexico for centuries--and mixed with salt and citrus juice. The most totally fun thing about this book is that you can do what I did--rush out to Sam's liquor store, buy half a dozen of the labels Emmons says are the best ones, and then hold a tasting with your friends. You can read out Emmons's colorful descriptions of what these different tequilas taste, smell, and look like, and then compare your impressions with Emmons's. We were all amazed at the total felicity of his write-ups. It's not giving away any secrets to mention Patron as a great tequila, but check out Chinaco. Take Emmons's surprising advice and don't pay too much attention to the anejos (the really aged tequilas). Go for the blancos, or if they're too much of a shock to your bourgeois sensibilities, start with the reposados. This is totally a Damascus Road experience. Salud, companeros
