5 out of 5 stars Excellent instruction of the basics........2007-01-09

There are at least two approaches to drawing: "freeform" and "precision drawing". This is an excellent book that effectively explains the basics of precision drawing step by step. He tells how to use the pencil as a tool to find angles, explains perspective, eye level, horizon lines, etc and has excellent illustrations to go along with it. He has exercises for each point he teaches and has photos of each step of the exercise. It's not a fun book to "look" at - to use it, you must take your time and sit down and read the small print slowly. But once you do, you find that this is an excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Drawing Sharp Focus Still Lifes.......2005-09-09

This is a great book for the beginning artist. I was taking an 8-week intro art class when I found this book in the library. When I showed it to my art teacher, and she liked it, I knew I had to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars best I have ever read regarding drawing fundamentals.......1998-01-31

I have been a professional drawing instructor for over fifteen years and have found this book to be one of the very best for assisting students in grasping the concept of form construction, rendering objects correctly in linear perspective, seeing and building values, and gaining an appreciation of the value of striving for technical skills. Having been educated in an era in which the theory was not to teach "technique" for fear it would stifle a student's creativity (and realizing that this approach was bogus), I can honestly say that Mr. Zappalorti has done his students a great service if his teaching methods are reflected in this text. My sincere congratulation and thanks for a marvelous teaching resource!

It appears that a lot of the contents were copied or gleened from other books.

It is not much better than a data sheet.

      4 out of 5 stars The 8051 by Mazidi & Mazidi.......2003-09-24

The books only covers basics. They have not touched many of the areas such as RTC etc. Many of the topics are not covered in depth. They should also have touched the topic of programming 8051 with C and C++ or they can write a seperate book for this topic.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent book for starting your first project in 8051.......2001-01-24

It is a great book for beginners ,It has been very useful for my first project ,It explains how to start programming and designing the 8051 microcontroller ,and I advice every engineer student who wants to get a good start in using 8051 in one of his projects to take access of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Not very useful for real project!.......2000-07-11

If you need to use 8051 in a work project, this is not the book for you. It's a not college level text, and the more advanced topics are either not covered or left as an exercise for readers. It's definitely not worth the price they charge.

2 out of 5 stars For Beginner only, some serious stuff is missing.......2000-07-10

I bought this book because of the five star rating, and I need a good 8051 book for my project. I spend about two days to go over this book, and are quite disappointed with the depth of the book. If you just want to know the very basic application of 8051, it's probably ok although there are quite a few typos.

There are three major flaws with this book:

      1. Most of the serious topics are touched very lightly; it's almost useless for a firware/hardware engineer. For example, the memory map and the handshaking application of 8255.

      2. Lots of trivial questions after each section, and each section is very short(again, nothing is really covered in details).

      3. Very weak index, try to find memory-map!

I don't think the book deserves the price they ask for. I actually learned more from the 8051.com tutorial than from this book. The search for a good 8051 book is continued!!!

4 out of 5 stars Very useful for an embedded software engineer.......2003-03-12

Whether you have to make minor adjustment to existing code - or design one starting with a blank screen - this books covers in succinct way all tasks any embedded software engineer is likely to come across.

However, the author of the book tends to cut-and-paste too much of prduct specification by chip vendors.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Chest of Gems.......2001-09-11

This book belongs on the bookshelf of every programmer engaged in time-triggered embedded systems.

No that's wrong, it belongs on their desk - it should have post-it notes hanging out the sides, the binding should be broken and numerous stains of coffee should mar the pages. It is the most pragmatic guide to building embedded systems programs I've seen in my 25+ years of experience with such systems.

This book lives up to the dreams and goals of the patterns community; namely the capturing of wisdom in a way that can be shared with others. Pont's collection of patterns oozes wisdom on each page, from concept to implementation. The topical organization of patterns ranges from early project development issues such as selection of the right microcontroller to detail design questions of interfacing to switches, keypads, LED's and LCD panels. Along the way Pont tackles some of the most baffling topics in embedded systems - co-operative, pre-emptive and shared-clock schedulers; and the interfacing of multi-processor systems.

If you are a programmer new to embedded systems development, then careful, methodical study, will rapidly help you through multiple learning curves - time-based architectures; digital, analog and electromechanical sub-systems often connected to microcontrollers; interfacing to the variety of communications protocols you might encounter; data acquisition; control strategies; feedback systems; and so much more.

If you have experience building embedded systems then this is a book that deserves to be treated as a reference book or a handbook - that is, it should be browsed from cover to cover to discover the comprehensive nature of topics; then as new work is assigned to you, or new problems arise, it should be the first book you consult for ideas, pointers and solutions.

This book has a depth that suggests many years of research. It brings together and cross-correlates so many diverse topics, I suspect it was difficult to write. I appreciate the hard work and dedication it must have taken to finish this project. I thank Michael Pont, as with this book, he has made my job easier.

The book is beginner to intermediate level. It does a good job of descibing how the processor process information, decribes memory mapping vs I/O mapping with some good hardware examples to cover both. I use it a lot for reference. Covers the no-man land between soft and hardware well. All software is in assembly (off course).

      3 out of 5 stars Better than Predko's book.......2003-04-25

I certainly got more information about programming the 8051 microcontroller from this book than from Predko's 'Programming and Customizing the 8051', or for that matter, any other 8051 book I've managed to get my hands on (Steve Sokolowsky's "Assembly Language Basics" and Boyet and Katz's 'The 8051 Programming, Interfacing, Applications. Ok, that's only 2 more, but hey- it's the best out of 4). I couldn't figure ANYTHING out from them. Most of it is handled in a nice, logical manner. I wish SOMEONE whould just make a SHORT, CLEAR, CONCISE, BARE-BONES book of just what is important. If they did it write, you'd have EVERYTHING that was important and it wouldn't even be 30 pages long. These people all spend SO many words descriping a few simple concepts that are OBVIOUS, and then when I try to find what's important, I get an impenetrable bog of words. Even when I find it, then, it's explained in a manner much more complicated than the underlying concept, and if I finally get it, I just say to myself "ALL he had to say was THIS, and he only had to say it ONCE!". If I had could FIGURE OUT everything I wanted to know from the effusive sea of words comprising any of these sources I'd tried, I might even write a book myself, but you can't write about what you don't know, and if I could find a good book OUT THERE, the world wouldn't NEED another one! Well, maybe I could get all the info I needed from a good one and make a great one. But still. You'd think someone would do a better job than this.

      4 out of 5 stars Another student's review.......2001-12-05

The book may be considered as a basic tool for designing an embedded system. It spreads in almost all the areas of nowadays microcontrolled devices. The book is based on Intel's 8051, but the algorithms described may be implemented basically for any microcontroller. The book is not suitable for people who doesn't have basic knowledge in programming in Assembler and C, but it may be used by people who are making their first steps in embedded design. At the end of the book there is a full list of all the Assembler commands for 8051. My recomendation is to put an example after each command. It will be very helpful.
As a whole, the book is great expecially with all the diagrams in it and my opinion is that every engineer involved in embedded system design should have it on its bookshelf.

      3 out of 5 stars A students review.......2001-01-24

Well, to start of with - it was ONLY written by Karakehayov, the others are just there for show. Which means that the English language in the books is a bit bad. And the author (or publicher) didn't take the time to structure the book very well. BUT if you can live with that the books got GREAT diagrams, which if you can understand them, makes the book invaluble for designing a complicated embedded system or software.

The book also takes emphasis on assambler, only one of the chapters is a review of c programming.

4 out of 5 stars Design Your Embedded Systems Using Classical Tools.......2000-06-21

This book covers some of the gray area between basic research in embedded systems, and microcontroller applications gravitating strongly to a particular device. Perhaps the title should emphasize accurately the fact that the covers the Intel 8051 and Philips 83C552.

The material is presented comprehensively in great technical depth. Clarity is enhanced by a wealth of well organized diagrams supporting the text appropriately. The book offers plenty of "goodies" like the proposed classification and graphical symbols for all microcontroller flags - something that I have not seen in any other book.

The book targets the embedded computer professionals and advanced hobbyists. In the academic environment it would perfectly serve as a guiding text for undergraduate or graduate courses. I would also strongly recommend the book for instrumentation projects where the students have to design and build their own systems.

1 out of 5 stars Lots of bark, but almost no bite........1998-05-02

One doesn't normally expect a technical book to be more than passibly readable, and this slim book is no exception. However, even books with a stiff style, grammatical errors, and blantant proofreading slips can be forgiven when one gets to the technical information. And that, sadly, is what this book is missing. Although there are some schematics, and an OK, if greatly abbreviated discussion of A/D operation and usage, the book simply lacks any significant punch. And then there are the errors. Just looking through the first chapter I spotted several. In one, a pin on the 8051 is mislabled as an output, and then referred to in the text as an input. Do you suppose that might confuse someone? Or the references to entries in a table which do not exist? The table is there, but the entries in question are not. Perhaps this book could have been saved by including some data sheets from Intel or Philips. Perhaps a discussion of timer operation would have helped, if it had turned out to be any more than just a rehash of the timer register descriptions from the data sheets. Well, that's the bottom line here, actually. This book doesn't have anything you can't get from the manufacturers, personal web pages, and even a pretty good FAQ. Get the Intel, Philips, and Dallas Semicondutor PDF files (8051 Programmer's Guide, datasheets, etc.) and you will have more information than can be found in this book, and it will be better written, too. And the best part is that the stuff from the manufacturers is free.

I was working on a topic (5.8.1) and looked at 'sample software' p242. The sample software promised to be on the disks, are not on the disks. (LCD8.ASM)

I browsed the given site (and many more) but no reference to the software of the book or any updates (if any).

I find no other way to contact anyone but trying this review.

Please let me know if I can download the example files (not on the disks) from somewhere.

        Thanks

This was the first book I bought (I now own 3 others on the 8051), and it is basically all text and very little to none in the flowcharts or drawings to help get the microcontroller programming concept across. It gives you alot of ascii text long program examples with wordy explanations that put you to sleep! The only book I've seen that took the time to explain assembly language programming for the 8051 is the one by Scott McKenzie (his chap.8 entitled "Program Structure and Design) is worth the price of the book). Another book I would recommed for newbies is "Microcontrolller Cookbook" by M.R.James, as it's very practical and easily understood.

4 out of 5 stars Useful for beginers or old pro's.......1999-03-12

I have been designing hardware and programing the 8051 series for over 10 years. Still the book makes a good cookbook for methods and ideas that I may not have used for years and have forgotten. For hackers, it is great. For serious designers, it puts all in one place an outline of the CPU hardware architecture, various option configurations, and firmware suggestions. I like it, and I am keeping it in easy reach on my bookshelf.

This book is disorganized, the examples do not work, and it is generally not well written.
