My favorite cookbook.......2000-01-27
I've used all the Cooking Light cookbooks - this is the one I always return to. I can always find something when I'm searching for a menu plan. I haven't found a mediocre dish in this book yet. Great variety and lots of choices for the basics (like: chicken etc). Easy, clear directions using mostly have-on-hand or easy to find ingredients.
My Favorite Cookbook.......2000-01-11
This is the cookbook that I return to again and again - every recipe in it has been a hit with my husband (who doesn't realize that what he's eating is "healthy) and myself. The recipes are usually quick to prepare, call for a minimum number of "unusual" ingredients (I hate it when I have to buy $30 in spices to prepare a single dish, and that's not the case with this collection), and taste fresh without tasting low fat.

I am not a great cook so I love the short and easy recipes. Also, the beautiful pictures are truly inspirational. Best of all, the recipes actually turned out the way described! Highly recommended for health conscious, non-chef/good cook wannabes.

Great book, but get her newer one instead.......2007-05-04
The other reviews are on target: this book is full of great food that never feels like "diet" food. I would recommend Sally Schneider's work to anyone who loves to cook, especially to tackle "project" cooking, but is looking for tricks for cutting fat and calories.
That being said, I was a little disappointed when I received this book. I already owned the much larger, more recent "A New Way to Cook," and most of the recipes in this volume (especially the best ones) are repeated in that one.
Not to say these aren't great, but A New Way to Cook is a far superior book: vast collection of recipes with tips on changing them by taste and availability of ingredients, plus a huge chapter on sauces, techniques, marinades and the like, etc.
So between the 2, I would definitely recommend A New Way to Cook.
As for this book, I've enjoyed the cajun meat loaf, though I usually modify just a little (eg., add green peppers back in) and the greens and rice. I tried the soda bread, and maybe I made mistakes, but it came out heavy and dry. Reminded me of that scene from About a Boy where he hits the duck with the loaf of bread.
One of the Best.......2005-07-15
This is one of our most used cookbooks in our house. The Cajun Meat Loaf and the Shrimp Ragout are outstanding. Takes some time but it is worth every minute. I agree with others that the title is somewhat misleading as dieters are likely to look into the book. I find that when I entertain one of her dishes is always on the table. Have recommended this book to all of my friends that love to cook.

I love everything about this book - the pictures, the recipes, the low-fat aspect of it! This is a fabulous cookbook period, lowfat or not! Actually because it is a lowfat cookbook, the delicious recipes deserve even more credit. This is the only lowfat cookbook I have that actually consistently delivers delicious results that do not in the least bit taste lowfat.

I too would've never bought this book based on the title. Lucky me, a friend gave it as a present. Ok, favorite recipe: the roast chicken with a pierced lemon in its cavity is so tasty, I dare you pass up on the skin! I make it all the time. Oh, and it works with a small orange just as well. Then there's the polenta recipes, and the chicken pot pie...
God bless this woman because she loves food and finds ways to prepare delicious food that's healthy. She's experimented plenty in order to deliver flavorful recipes for dishes that are low in fat, sodium and calories. I think anyone who loves food and cooking should own this book. And anyone who's on a restricted diet should definitely try this cookbok.
Finally, I have to say that I think Maria Robledo is the best food photographer in the business. It's impossible to look at her pictures and not feel like making and/or eating the food in them. It's no wonder that they've teamed up again. Bravo to both women on an excellent cookbook!
lousy title, fabulous cookbook.......2000-05-13
I am an avid cookbook collector and cook, and I am not kidding when I say that this is one of my most often used and enjoyed cookbooks. It was given to me by a dear friend, I would never have bought a low-calorie cookbook on my own. This is not a great low-calorie cookbook, it is a great cookbook, period.
There are wonderful recipes for a home smoked salmon, a great Irish Soda Bread, and a few brilliant ideas for duck that have become favorites in my house.
I love her general approach to eating. She does not promote the use of "diet" ingredients like margarine or artificial sweeteners, but encourages judicious use of the real thing. She has tested the recipes carefully to determine just how much of the "fattening" ingredients are necessary to make a dish, like cassoulet, for example, taste good without the outrageous amount of fat that is usual for that dish. She also provides nutritional info for each recipe.
My only concern about this book is that the only readers who are likely to look at it (because of the title) are dieters, and that's a shame because it's likely to be appealing to a much broader readership is they only knew to check it out!

These recipes definately save fat, calories and time. The meals taste great and you don't feel like you are sacrificing on taste. Some recipes do take a little more time than the book states but they are well worth it. I also like that they break down the calories by what percent come from fat. I like the recipe tips offered in the book as well as how the book is broken down by desserts, meatless, fish, etc. This is a winner which I will send to my friends.

This is my first Cooking Light cookbook and the recipes are wonderful. The fettucini alfredo is my favorite. Recipes are not quick, but worth the time.
Good, but "The Complete Cooking Light" is even better........2003-12-09
I love the Cooking Light cookbooks and magazine. For those of you unfamiliar with them, their cookbooks are well-organized, contain appealing photographs of many of the recipes, and include a wide variety of food types, including meatless dishes for vegetarians. In addition, most of the recipes are not overly complicated. I like too cook, but I am by no means an expert. If you're in the same boat, have no fear. You can handle most of the recipes in this book. In addition, they include helpful tips and photographs in sections where the recipes are a little bit more complicated. And for those of us who are health-conscious, they also include a thorough nutritional analysis in fine print after every recipe (e.g. calories, fat, fiber, etc.). Most importantly, the recipes are INTERESTING and DELICIOUS. It sounds like a cliche, but no one will know that the food is from a "light" cookbook unless you tell them.
This book is no exception. It contains the editors' picks of their tried & true best recipes over 10 years. While it is a very good cookbook, however, I do like "The Complete Cooking Light" better. It contains many more recipes and, thus, greater variety. If you can only buy one, buy "The Complete Cooking Light." If possible, though, buy both!
Quick, tasty, and low calorie.......2003-10-16
This is the cookbook for you if you like it easy, but good for your waistline. No one ever believes these dishes are from a "diet" cookbook.
My new favorite cookbook.......2003-04-27
I just got this cookbook a few weeks ago and just love it. It is my new everyday cookbook. I have made the individual filet mignons, red eye chicken, chicken & ham tetrazzini, huckleberry cake, parmesan and green peppercorn salad dressing, chicken parmesan. While it is true that there are some "diet" cookbooks out there that provide recipes with lower calorie counts I think this cookbook is more practical. Watching what you eat needs to be a lifelong process and this book makes it doable. Diet books which severely restrict calories are difficult to stick with for a long period. Using recipes from this book you can easily stick with between 300 to 500 calories for a dinner meal which is pretty reasonable and you won't feel deprived. Definitely gourmet. I would definitely recommend this cookbook.

I got this book for Christmas and have used it many times already. Everything I have tried has been tasty but my favorites are fettucine alfredo and the ceasar salad. This is not a book for anyone looking to cut all fat from their diet but for someone who wants to reduce fat without sacrificing any flavor. I highly recommend it!

Best tasting light recipes I've ever found........1997-01-30
This is a delightfully easy to follow low fat cookbook. I haven't found one recipe that is not a "keeper". My 47 year old husband recently had a heart attack and we have had to make major adjustments in our diet. This cookbook made it easy and delicious

Food that is lowfat, easy to prepare, and very, very good........1999-01-07
My son bought this cookbook for his girlfriend because of her inexperience with cooking. They have tried many of the dishes with amazing results. New Years Eve we enjoyed Chicken Cordon Bleu from the book and it was delicious. Ingredients are readily available, simple, and best of all LIGHT. I am getting a copy for myself before the day is out.

A Must Have Book for Furniture Studies.......2003-11-25
I have 25+ titles dealing with antique furniture and Four Centuries of American Furniture is, in my opinion, in the top three...a true "text book" of American furniture study. In this revised edition, Fitzgerald covers, in great detail, American furniture styles from the earliest settlers through the mid 20th century. Each period is covered in great depth, providing detailed info on the various regional style differences,how each one evolved, which countries influenced American furniture, as well as the many social and economic changes that influenced each style.
