How to make a mess in the kitchen!.......2003-04-07
This is a big board book showing Cookie Monster mix, bake, and of course, eat, a batch of cookies. My son likes the song "C is for Cookie" so he likes this book, and its size gives it some novelty value. On the downside it has minimal text, consisting of non-imaginative sentences, and the illustrations don't change much from page to page; it also doesn't help that Cookie's kitchen is depicted in washed-out pastel colours. (And I always thought that Cookie's cookies were chocolate-chip, but according to this book, they are raisins.)

Good description and nice pics, of course. Just try one recipe, it's chocolate chips cookies something...It's just too sweet for me, well, it's just a matter of taste, I might need to modify a bit to my tastebud. But the rest about the book is fine..Dont hesitate to buy!

I thought this book was great but the lady fingers dont turn out!! Other than that I would greatly reccomend this book to anyone else!
THE GREAT BIG COOKIE BOOK.......2003-10-09
I JUST LOVE THIS BOOK. THE ILLISTRANTIONS ARE GOOD FOR A BEGINNER AS I AM. I HAVE TRIED THE CHEESE CAKE AND IT TURNED OUT PERFECT. I AM HAVING A BABY SHOWER AND WANTED TO MAKE THE CHEDDER PENNIES SO I TRIED THE RECIPE AND IT WAS HORRIBLE. THE CHEESE AND BUTTER MELTED AND THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT AFTER 8 MINUTES IN THE OVEN. I AM GLAD I TRIED THE RECIPE PRIOR TO THE SHOWER.
Not sure if it's me or the book..........2002-10-11
Every recipe I have tried from The Great Big Cookie Book has been an utter failure. It's not obvious if I did something wrong, or if they are just bad recipes. I made snickerdoodles, and they came out like little scones. My mom pointed out later that their recipe is missing a key snickerdoodle ingredient - cream of tartar. In fact, all of the cookies I have tried from this book have the consistency of cake rather than what I consider cookie texture. And they are very bland - whatever you do don't make the peanut butter cookies if you are craving a sweet treat! I have had much better results with other baking books, so keep searching!
beautiful book.......2002-01-14
So far the recipes I've tried have turned out great. I like that they aren't as cloyingly sweet as many cook recipes are. This is definitely a book I will keep handy near holidays, both to make the cookies as presents, and to make the biscuits and muffins for holiday dinners.

Simply Fabulous.......1998-08-28
I picked this book up from the library. Since I pick up many cookie cookbooks, I thought it was just like any other book. Was I surprised. I couldn't believe that I wanted to try practically all the recipes. I knew I had to go out and buy it, which I did. It is an excellent resource, thorough guide to cookies. Kudos to the author. A must have book.
Book Description
The African-American contribution to winning World War II has never been celebrated as profoundly as in Fighting for America. In this inspirational and uniquely personal tribute, the essential part played by black servicemen and -women in that cataclysmic conflict is brought home.
Here are letters, photographs, oral histories, and rare documents, collected by historian Christopher Moore, the son of two black WWII veterans. Weaving his family history with that of his people and nation, Moore has created an unforgettable tapestry of sacrifice, fortitude, and courage. From the 1,800 black soldiers who landed at Normandy Beach on D-Day, and the legendary Tuskegee Airmen who won ninety-five Distinguished Flying Crosses, to the 761st Tank Battalion who, under General Patton, helped liberate Nazi death camps, the invaluable effort of black Americans to defend democracy is captured in word and image.
Readers will be introduced to many unheralded heroes who helped America win the war, including Dorie Miller, the messman who manned a machine gun and downed four Japanese planes; Robert Brooks, the first American to die in armored battle; Lt. Jackie Robinson, the future baseball legend who faced court-martial for refusing to sit in the back of a military bus; an until now forgotten African-American philosopher who helped save many lives at a Japanese POW camp; even the author’s own parents: his mother, Kay, a WAC when she met his father, Bill, who was part of the celebrated Red Ball Express.
Yet Fighting for America is more than a testimonial; it is also a troubling story of profound contradictions, of a country still in the throes of segregation, of a domestic battleground where arrests and riots occurred simultaneously with foreign service–and of how the war helped spotlight this disparity and galvanize the need for civil rights. Featuring a unique perspective on black soldiers, Fighting for America will move any reader: all who, like the author, owe their lives to those who served.
From the Hardcover edition.

Nothing short of an excellent walk through history.......2005-07-23
Chris Moore's chronicle of black patriotism from Colonial times through World War II is nothing short of an excellent walk through history. As a history buff I found myself eager to turn each page. I would sit with highlighter in hand marking special passages as though I was still a college student studying for an exam. Moore has a special way of transporting the reader back in time, allowing one to almost hear the voices of those who wrote the letters featured in the book. I never realized just how much we as a people contributed to the early Colonial battles that set America as a country free.
Even though black Americans have fought and died in every war this country has faced, only the heroes of recent history get recognition. Yes, we grew up with a knowledge of Crispus Attucks, but what about heroes like Seaman Doris 'Dorrie' Miller and Pfc Robert H. Brooks. Miller was aboard the USS West Virginia, when she was attacked December 7, 1941 by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor. Miller, a naval messman, managed to save several lives when he shot down four enemy planes with a .50-caliber anti-aircraft gun he'd never been trained to use. Miller was later presented the Navy Cross for his efforts. I was never taught in school about Pfc Robert H. Brooks was the first soldier to die at Fort Stotenbugh in the Phillipines, when the Japanese attacked December 8, 1941.
There was also airmen Eugene Bullard, who was not allowed to fly combat missions for America. Bullard was however, welcomed by the French army and became an ace pilot during World War I. Bullard flew more than twenty missions against the Germans and was credited with shooting down at least five enemy aircraft. Moore introduces us to black female heroes like pilot Willa Beatrice Brown. In 1941 Lieutenant Brown became the first woman officer in the U.S. Civil Air Patrol. Throughout WWII Brown served as an instructor in the Civilian Pilot Training Program.
Moore's research on the Red Ball Express, the 320th Barrage Ballon Brigade, the 161st Chemical Smoke Generating Company and the countless Engineer Aviation Battalions such as the 810th and the 811th paved the way for Allied victory. Moore allows the reader to feel the shear determination of black enlisted men and women who fought a duel war. One war was against the Germans and Japanese and the other war was against the prejudice they faced daily from their fellow American service men and women. Although this book began as a tribute to Moore's parents S.Sgt. Bill Moore and Pfc Norma K. DeFreese Moore his four year journey turned out to be so much more. Though not written as a text book, this book should be incorportated into the half written history books our children are taught from. It is a book that my family will read again and again.

Interesting.......2005-05-25
What an interesting subject, presented with historical perspective in Fighting for America, written by Moore to honor his GI Joe Mom and Dad.
I found myself saying out loud, "I didn't know that" as I got a history lesson about the role African-Americans played in fighting for America since they became "Americans."
Even in a movie like "Saving Private Ryan," the important role of several hundred black soldiers at Utah and Omaha Beach on D-Day was not shown. Throughout the book that focuses on World War II, we learn about heroism, camaraderie, segregation, exclusion, demoralization, prejudice -- and patriotism.
Often black men were sent on the most difficult missions - ands then their efforts were greatly downplayed or excluded from history (both when it happened) and in written-down history.
Black women also served as nurses and with other support units. The 6,888th Central Postal Direction Battalion, an all-black unit, assigned some 80 black women to handle mail sorting at a base in Birmingham, England. Those women were the first black people many English had seen, and they helped to shatter stereotypes.
Many of us have heard of the Tuskegee Airmen and all they accomplished. Other black soldiers, trained as paratroopers, were sent to the West Coast of the United States and became firefighters. Their job was to jump into remote forested area and put out fires caused by airborne incendiary bombs sent aloft by the Japanese.
Also, a third of the 10,500 soldiers who built the Alcan Highway (from Canada through roughest Alaska) were black. This major construction project was rushed to ensure that America had a way to get supplies to northward to defend our borders if the enemy blocked our supply ships.
The book was filled with such interesting facts that any history buff will love it. And if you just like to read good stories about good people, it will meet that requirement.
A special piece of history.......2005-01-09
If you are a fan of history or not this is wonderful book. Having read a several other history books on WWII in college, this is the first book that has captured me. The journey the reader takes through the life of the author's family and through other soldier's personal experiences allows the reader to relate to the war rather then simply read about it. If history books in school were written like this one, history class would not have been dreaded.
AFRICAN AMERICAN HEROES!.......2004-12-29
To anyone with any common sense, it should come as no surprise that African American soldiers carried the load, literally, during the Second World War. FIGHTING FOR AMERICA does a superb and meticulous job in detailing all of the many ways which black soldiers helped to win the war. It is simply a national shame that most black soldiers who fought in WWII have gone to their graves without any recognition for their bravery and heroism. This book is loaded with bonafide heroes who are worthy of our applause and any monument which can be erected in their honor. I recommend this book highly.

Excellent Book!.......2007-09-09
The book is historically accurate and extensively researched. There is no R-rated material in the book. The artwork on the planes reflects young men at war, who lived like there was no tomorrow. For a number of them, there was no tomorrow. Buy the book.
flashy fighting colors.......2007-05-14
The artwork should have been rated R for adult. I bought it for a gift and when I received it, it was too racy to give.

Disrupted by numbers.......2005-09-10
I was dissapointed in this book. I found it a difficult read because the text was inundated with percentages, statistics and numbers. The author used statistics and percentages, which can be manipulated to 'prove' anything, to back up every one of her statements and opinions.
I would have perfered much more straight reporting of her ideas and feelings and much less this mish-mash of numbers and percentages. A very cumbersome read.
Good Effort ---three and a half stars.......2005-06-20
I was so happy that a gen Xer took the time out and wrote down and analyzed the current available data regarding various social statistics to come up with something totally different than what is always presented by the media. Farai Chideya took information and simplified it for her generational group, to see and interpret for themselves...the informaiton is very easy to read for those on the go. For those gen Xer's who are frustrated with the negative imagery presented, surely this one will do the job at dispelling the BS.
Very disappointing.......2002-09-11
Having watched her even-handed reporting on TV, I assumed I would--in light of the title--get a fair-minded, non-hypey exploration of the complicated issues related to African-Americans. Instead, I got a simplistic, incredibly biased polemic. She distorts numbers and contorts and withholds facts to prove her points. Don't waste your money.
Excellent Information, Presented very well.......2001-06-22
An excellent book. It smashes the political lies and rhetoric and presents a staggeringly different side of things. I recommend this book for African Americans who think that we're all doomed or "can't do right". I recommend this book to Caucasians who think that black people are dreaming up racism, and who think that we're all welfare junkies. Chideya also presents statistics that should make everyone ask more questions. If this book doesn't make you want to take political action, read it again, because you missed something!
Chideya isn't a numbers person.......2000-08-29
Throughout much of this book, Chideya uses a very quantitative approach -with plenty of statistics- to prove her arguments. In my opinon though, she often doesn't supply all the pertinent stats, and occasionally draws conclusions that are either too simplistic or not suggested by the figures she uses. In all, I didn't feel like my own opinions were firmly challenged while reading this book.

Read About Fighting and Saving Vehicles.......2001-03-03
The title is actually a misnomer. This book isn't all about fire pumpers and ladder trucks but also contains great information about Rescue, Support (lighting, air resupply, generators), Airport crash trucks, Tankers, and Command and Control trucks. The last section talks about the colors and "decorative appearance" of trucks in different cities.
I find this book a wonderful all-around reference to the above vehicles. The book contains photos and info on the best of the breed of tankers, support, rescue, etc. The author went to the large cities and basically "peeked into the firehouse" to see what they have and what they used it for.
Methods and procedures are discussed such as how to hook up hoses to hydrants, drive to the scene, and conduct firefighting or rescue operations to name a few.
The author was also there for many major fires and rescue work in several cities so the photos are taken at great "frontline" angles and not behind some crowd. Also, the captions are specific and describes what the photo shows and is about. It's not "Four rescue trucks at a downtown accident," BUT "This is a pretty rare scene where four out of five NYFD rescue trucks show up for the construction accident. You can see the debris lying on the street in the background. One person was killed in this accident."
The best part I find is the explanations. As I read, I have questions which the author seems to predict and answer. Do tankers run to the water source with lights and sirens? Why does some cities run ladders and others towers? Do cities paint their trucks orange? Why don't firemen ride standing on the rear bumper? Why do rural towns have better vehicles than large cities? All these questions the author answered.
Highly recommend for the fire vehicle and modeler fan. A great book to learn both from text, photos, and quotes.
A feast for the eyes of any fire truck enthusiast!.......1999-10-17
I recommend this book to anyone who even likes fire trucks a little bit. It has over 85 awesome color pics of all different kinds of fire trucks in every color imaginible. I especially enjoyed the section on special units. Also, there are sidebars covering such topics as quints and squad companies. Also, if you like this book, be sure to check out "Fire Trucks In Action" by George Hall- They're both great books!

Real Airplanes!.......2006-11-05
To remember the Century series you have to be "of a certain age". I'm getting there. I had this book when it was first published and it still has appeal. The author has made a good balance between pictures, text and color plates; all showing the advance designs of aviation and all the colorful heraldtry of the time. This is a book well worth having in an aviation library.
Only book like it.......2001-08-07
The century series of fighter aircraft is unique. They were developed at a time when the air force was transitioning from sub-sonic to supersonice aircraft. Hence, these aircraft looked like nothing that had come before, and were as exotic as the YF-22 or stealth bomber are today. Even today they represent, in my mind, some of the most beautiful and sleek aircraft ever built. This is the only book I have ever found devoted exclusively to these aircraft. The pictures are beautiful, and the text isn't dumbed down to make it appealing to people who just want to look at the pictures. Each of the aircraft gets its own chapter, and is covered fairly in depth. If you build aircraft models, or an amateur air force historian, this is definitely a must have.

Book Description
Although he has largely receded from the public consciousness, John Mitchell Jr., the editor and publisher of the Richmond Planet, was well known to many black, and not a few white, Americans in his day. A contemporary of Booker T. Washington, Mitchell contrasted sharply with Washington in temperament. In his career as an editor, politician, and businessman, Mitchell followed the trajectory of optimism, bitter disappointment, and retrenchment that characterized African American life in the Reconstruction and Jim Crow South.
Best known for his crusade against lynching in the 1880s, Mitchell was also involved in a number of civil rights crusades that seem more contemporary to the 1950s and 1960s than the turn of that century. He led a boycott against segregated streetcars in 1904 and fought residential segregation in Richmond in 1911. His political career included eight years on the Richmond city council, which ended with disenfranchisement in 1896.
As Jim Crow strengthened its hold on the South, Mitchell, like many African American leaders, turned to creating strong financial institutions within the black community. He became a bank president and urged Planet readers to comport themselves as gentlemen, but a year after he ran for governor in 1921, Mitchell's fortunes suffered a drastic reversal. His bank failed, and he was convicted of fraud and sentenced to three years in the state penitentiary. The conviction was overturned on technicalities, but the so-called reforms that allowed state regulation of black businesses had done their worst, and Mitchell died in poverty and some disgrace.
Basing her portrait on thorough primary research conducted over several decades, Ann Field Alexander brings Mitchell to life in all his complexity and contradiction, a combative, resilient figure of protest and accommodation who epitomizes the African American experience in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
