Customer Reviews:
confusing cholesterol.......2007-09-26
Having to recently begin watching my cholesterol I purchased this book as I thought it would be the easiest and quickest book to help me understand eating and cookiing. However, I found it more confusing than anything else and very similar to any other book as far as technical information, though, it tried to be "cute" a lot. I would have been interested in sample menus and clearly posted lists showing foods to avoid etc. The chapters on 10 foods to avoid and 10 foods to include were interesting but not enough and too much information and disclaimers throughout the book.
attacking cholesterol.......2007-08-16
This is a great reference book for those of us fighting the dreaded cholesterol monster. I can say no more than that it is worth the money and a must have.
Boring read, good information.......2007-04-21
The title says it all. I tried to read from cover to cover but it's just boring. So I jumped around, which be design works great that way, got the information I needed, and moved on with my life.
Helpful guidlines.......2006-11-11
This book is full of helpfull information. It is fairly uptodate concidering they keep lowering the recommended cholesterol levels every year. Its not to hard ro read. The terms and explanations are easly understood.
Buy it..........2006-01-15
This is a fantastic book for learning all about the cholestrol which is the reason why I bought it. However, after I read it, I was pleasantly surprised to find this book to be better than most popular "diet" books out there. It's straight forward (with humor!), contains lots of informative facts, many handy references (web sites, phone numbers, statistics etc.,), considerate of the reader and not out to please any interest groups (i.e., honest). What more can you ask for! This book is well worth your money.

Book Description
Just been diagnosed with high blood pressure? Don’t fret you’re not alone. In fact, you’re a member of a club that includes an estimated one-quarter of the world’s population! But just because it’s common doesn’t mean you should treat it lightly. People with high blood pressure are at significantly greater risk for stroke, heart attack, kidney failure and blindness. There’s a reason why it’s often referred to as “the silent killer”—most people never experience any symptoms... until it’s too late. Now for some good news: tons of money has been pouring into high blood pressure research over the last couple of decades, and nowadays it is a very manageable condition.
If you think you may be at risk for high blood pressure, or already know that you’ve got it and are looking for the best way to manage it, this book is for you. Written by bestselling health author Dr. Alan Rubin, it clues you in on everything you need to:
- Find out if you have high blood pressure or if you’re at risk
- Determine what type you have and how serious it is
- Understand what causes it
- Know how it affects your body’s organs
- Work with a doctor to get your pressure down
- Take charge of your health and add years to your life
In plain English, Dr. Rubin explains the role of genetics, sex, age, and ethnicity in high blood pressure. He explores lifestyle factors that contribute to high blood pressure. And he offers:
- Expert advice on various blood pressure medications, their effectiveness, side affects, and alternatives
- Nutritional guidelines for managing high blood pressure, including the AMA’s DASH diet
- Tips on how to lose weight, quit smoking, and make other key lifestyle changes guaranteed to get your pressure under control
- Guidance on how to design a blood-pressure-lowering exercise program that you can stick with
- The inside track on alternative treatments, including yoga, meditation, hypnosis, biofeedback, and more
Packed with basic strategies for managing high blood pressure, High Blood Pressure For Dummies will set you on the path to a long and healthy life.

my review.......2007-07-24
I wish it would tell me what is too low. Sometines my medication really brings it way down and I don't know how concerened I should be.
I have a severe case of "White coat syndrome". Because of this it is hard to know if thr doctor is over medicating me. Therefore I monotor my omw blood pressure and medicate accordingly.
I wish the book included more blood anaylsis data.
I aside from the above comments I am happy with the book and refer to it when nessary.
This was written by my wife Ida. I personally don't have a blood presssure problem. The book was purchased for her.
JNC VII.......2005-06-23
Whether a clinician or just someone who wants to learn more about the latest treatments for high blood pressure, if you buy a book about hypertension, make sure it incorporates that latest guidelines -- JNC VII (2003). Diagnosis and treatment guidelines changed substantially. I have a copy of this book and like it quite a bit but as far as I know, it has not been updated to include JNC VII recommendations.

BP for Dummies.......2004-12-31
Think about this scenario. One fine morning you are diagnosed with High Blood Pressure and you have no idea about this silent killer. Then this book is for you. Dr Alan knows his subject inside out and uses a language which is extremely easy for one and all to follow. You can always give this book as a gift to someone you know suffering from Blood Pressure. It has everything in it. Various treatment options, medicines and its side effects, exercises needed, diets, supplements and a whole lot that will help the reader to have a normal and healthy life.
As I'm sitting here writing this review I'm sipping a delicious beverage that cannot stop drinking. Absolutely fabulous stuff! Made from roasted soya that you brew like coffee. My doctor said my cholesterol dropped 30 points thanks to this. Look for it online at www.s oycoffee.com. As for the book, it's pure pleasure reading
Excellent Book!.......2002-09-28
I was recently diagnosed with extremely high blood pressure and I knew absolutely nothing about it. This book really helped me understand what was going on! It is very clear and easy to read, well-organized and very detailed. I read the entire book and really enjoyed it. I continually refer to it for info about medications, side effects, diet, etc. I would recommend it highly for anyone who needs to know about high blood pressure.

Heart disease affects almost 25 percent of Americans and causes almost a million deaths per year. Although women fear breast cancer more, only 1 woman in 27 dies from breast cancer, while 1 woman in 2 dies from heart disease. Kudos to James Rippe, M.D., associate professor of cardiology at Boston's Tufts University Medical School and director of the Rippe Health Assessment at Celebration Health and the Center for Lifestyle Research, for making such a serious subject accessible and even entertaining. In the style of the For Dummies books, the information is presented in a lively, simple, conversational manner, with easy-to-follow, skimmable text and helpful checklists. Rippe's main point is that there's plenty you can do to "maximize your cardiac function," reduce your risk of heart disease, and keep your heart working like a well-tuned orchestra. Learn how your heart works, how to keep it strong, and what puts it at risk for disease. Get a "healthy heart lifestyle plan" of nutrition, exercise, and stress reduction--straightforward and easy to implement. Control the four major contributing causes of heart disease: elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, and being overweight. Understand the most common heart conditions and their tests, procedures, and rehabilitation. If you want a healthier heart--and who doesn't?--this is your guide. --Joan Price
Book Description
The Healthy Heart For Dummies explores that most vital organ -- the heart -- and explains why you need to care for it. NOT JUST ANOTHER COOKBOOK!.......2000-06-09
The Heart Healthy cookbook is a great addition to any library in the "new" lowfat genre. The Chef's included in this volume give low-fat cooking a decidedly tasty twist. Color pictures are not numerous, but well done, and very clear. Directions are precise, and the results have been wonderful. The recipes I have tried, allow for variation to personalize for dietary needs, tastes or restrictions. A great book!

Diner fare has become mythic. Though much of this food is best left to nostalgic recollection, the desserts served at places with names like the Silver Top or Miss Albany's were often choice. Tish Boyle's Diner Desserts celebrates this fact with its collection of more than 60 favorite recipes that includes old favorites like Banana Cream Pie and newer enticements like Chocolate Cheesecake Bars. In such evocatively titled chapters as "Under the Cake Keeper," "From the Soda Fountain," and "Dunkables--Doughnuts, Muffins, and Pastries," Boyle presents a wide range of tempting recipes. Standouts include the Sky-High Lemon Meringue Pie, Blueberry Lemon Cheesecake with a gingersnap crust, Apple-Raspberry Crisp with Pecan Crunch Topping, and, of course, that Banana Cream Pie. There's a nice collection, too, of cookie, bar, and brownie recipes, as well as a section devoted to the likes of the Root Beer Float, Hot Fudge Walnut Sundae, and a Triple-Threat Banana Split. Photo-illustrated throughout and laced with diner anecdotes (the sundae began in reaction to the Sunday prohibition of soda drinks), Diner Desserts offers both browsing fun and cooking satisfaction. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
Wrap your hands around a cuppa joe, slip a quarter in the jukebox, and dig into a sweet, satisfying slice of Sky-High Lemon Meringue Pie or Chocolate Marble Cheesecake. With Diner Desserts, you don't have to hit the highway to indulge in the favorite desserts of America's roadside eateries. From a Really Rich Double-Chocolate Milk Shake to Creamy Tapioca Pudding and Sour Cream Blueberry Crumbcake, author Tish Boyle has assembled much more than a baker's dozen of scrumptious treats. These are the desserts that no one turns down, ever. This book is a warm slice of nostalgic Americana, with wholesome, easy-to-follow recipes enhanced by black and white photographs of classic diners. Perfect for home cooks and diner aficionados alike, Diner Desserts is sure to remind you that a slice of homemade pie is always a real good way to start the day.

One of my absolute favorites.......2006-07-27
Everything I have made is mouth watering. Simple yet melt in your mouth. I crave this book and the recipes in it. I love the page numbers-very clever! The chocolate cream and coconut cream pie recipes are worth the price of this amazing cookbook.
clear directions, perfect results.......2004-04-08
I'm interested mainly in cake baking and I have to say, this book has perfect cakes. clear, detailed instructions lead to foolproof cake making, with delicious results. my favourites are the choc fudge layer cake and maple walnut cake. one complaint though..I'm 19 and love the sweet stuff, but grown ups have complained about the sweetness in the frostings, which can be reduced.
This Book Rocks!!!!.......2003-11-14
The German Chocolate Cake recipe alone is worth the price. This is a great collection of diner favorites. To fully enjoy the goodies from this book I'm having one of those revolving dessert display cases installed in my kitchen. This is a great book for even the most casual baker, like me. The directions are clear and concise. The ingredients are basic. The results are fantastic.
Being a former diner owner...........2003-08-29
Being a former diner owner I was surprised with this book!It does a great job of capturing the simple diner recipes and doesn't leave out the great taste!
The double chocolate fudge cake is fab!!!!!And very easy to make! The high and might cake, well you make it and serve it to your family, I am sure you will get an eye opening smile, huggs, and kisses! It is also a wonderful cake for birthdays, hint hint!
This book will not let you down!
Delicious and easy recipes!.......2003-07-22
The first recipe I tried was the recipe for the picture on the cover- the chocolate cream pie. I was a bit apprehensive because the last time I tried to make pudding I ended up with chocolate milk, and as I was making this for guests I really didn't want that to happen again. After following the instructions carefully I had perfect chocolate pudding! Not only had the pudding worked, but it was the best I'd ever had. After pairing it with whipped cream and a chocolate crust, it was absolute bliss! The best chocolate cream pie any of us had ever had! The pie also kept well in the refridgerator for several days. The next recipe I tried was the mega oatmeal, walnut, and chocolate chip cookies. They were absolutely fabulous! It made over 40 cookies so I brought them to school. When word got out how delicious they were, they were gone in a matter of seconds. I got many requests to make them again. The other recipe I tried was the Devils food cake. They were moist and delicous and chocolatey. There are still many recipes I want to try. For my birthday I plan on making the chocolate fudge layer cake! It sounds fabulous! There are no pictures in this book, but there is also no need. Anyone could make these recipes perfectly if they just follow her clear and easy instructions. This book is worth the money!
