5 out of 5 stars Top Text for Irish Barbeques.......2001-10-03

I live in a small village on the coast of Northern Ireland where the barbeque days are few. So I have to make sure that I make the best use of available barbeque opportunities. Amazingly, I found this book in our local library. I took it out, tried a simple recipe on the next day it didn't rain and it was a revelation! My Tuscan-style Steak became legendary within days and it was all I could do not to claim the credit all for myself. But no, this book is a masterpiece. I had to have it for myself. So easy to follow, so colourful and mouth-watering, just to read. I have never looked back - my family and friends want to barbeque even when the Irish Mist is low (but the craic is as good as the food).

5 out of 5 stars One of the best guides for grilling I have found........1998-04-03

The Classic Barbecue and Grill Cookbook is, without a doubt, one of the best guides for barbecue and grilling that I have found. The author not only covers the basics (equipment, utensils, etc,) of how to prepare barbecue and grilled food of all types, she presents a wide variety of techniques (and tips) on how to enhance the flavor and presentation of almost any grilled meal. I found the section on dry rubs, sauces and marinades particularly noteworthy, as they can be used to make any grilled dish truly unique. Every meal that I have prepared from the recipes in this book have received outstanding comments from my guests. I would encourage anyone with an interest in barbecuing, from the novice "Burger Burner" to the true "Grill Gourmet" to get a copy of this book, you won't regret it.

This is an excellent source for the collector of antique sewing implements. Full color illustrations of all priced objects make it easy to identify and place a value on pincushions, needlecases, thimbles and more. Not much text but price guides are generally short on text. If a price guide is what you want, I recommend this one.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars dont buy this book.....buy POCKET KNIFE TRADER'S PRICE GUIDE VOLUME 8.......2007-05-25

Well its a typical price guide. The values in it are way overinflated and none of the knives actually bring that much money. It is also missing prices for several highly collectible knives.
The Case XX section of this book is kinda difficult to find what you are looking for.
If you are thinking of buying this book then dont, I would recommend POCKET KNIFE TRADER'S PRICE GUIDE VOLUME 8 it is much easier to figure out and has actual prices and it is cheaper. It is also fresh off the presses and is written by a group of people who are directly involved with Case and Tony Foster who knows everything about knives.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference among so few.......2007-01-26

A lot of good information in this book from Mr. Price!
I would have liked to see more info on obscure knives but I also understand there are only so many pages in the book(750 or so), what info is found between the pages is detailed and accurate.
A definite worthy addition to anyones library that collects knives.

5 out of 5 stars Price Guide to Collector Knives.......2006-11-10

This book is great. I wanted a book listing knife values and this shows everything on that subject for all knives.

2 out of 5 stars Not recommended........2005-08-01

If it wasn't for Case knives it wouldn't be much of a book.
There is some good basic information, about the same as included
in most knife books. Many many knife makers are not mentioned.
I purchase reference books on all my interest and with few
exceptions these books list a great percentage of the total
industry, not just a few as this book does. It sure could have
been better described.

This outstanding showcase of new 2003 custom blades features a brand new eight page color section to accompany over 1,000 black and white photos and an in-depth history covering knives and their custom designs. From scrimshaw and ancient steels to a directory of knifemakers and suppliers, Knives 2003 comes packed cover to cover with invaluable information, in-depth history and detail.

4 out of 5 stars Standard Reference Work.......2001-06-15

This book is part of a series of books that has been coming out now for many years. They consist of an article section, a trends in cutlery section (with lots of artfully done photos, and a directory section of the cutlery collectible trade and custom makers, etc. I have the whole run and look at them now and again for reference.

    4 out of 5 stars Knives 2001 Goes Hollywood.......2000-10-30

Well, not really but I was disappointed with the advertising inserts in this year's issue. It detracts from the overall usefulness of the book. The Knives series are reference manuals in my opinion and the semigloss Junglee insert and the "Marketplace" advertisement was a bore.

The B&W photos of the knives are nice as usual and even with a new editor (Joe Kertzman) at the helm the book still seems to retain a lot of Ken Warner's flavor.

This year's articles are interesting though not as much as last years issue. I particulary liked the article by Mastersmith/Wordsmith Ed Fowler. Man, does that guy know how to write about knives. He can make 'em, too! It is nice to see Bernard Levine and Butch Winter back again this year.

The Trends section placement of photos are A1. There are some stunning knives there like Jerry Fisk's damascus bowie and Tom Johanning's survival knife. How do these guys do it? There were many other great knives there. Too many to list, though. Check out the pocketknife section. I would love to own anyone of them. Dan Burke's work is just out of this world as is Richard Rogers.

The factory trends section is very good this year with a nice variety. Some excellent knives there also like the Benchmade Mel Pardue Axis lock and the reemergence of the Marbles knife co. Missing in my opinion is the knife/bargain of the year. The MicroTech LCC design by Greg Lightfoot--an exception tactical knife built like a tank and priced most folks can afford.

The directory gets bigger and bigger each year and I like that. The Knives series books are the first I turn to when I am checking out a new maker. The directory includes a state-by-state listing along with the alphabetical listing, a knife photo index (smart move) and a plethora of other specialist ranging from sheathmakers to engravers and etchers.

Knives 2001 is the number one knife reference book to have this year. Overall I am really pleased with it and each year seems to get a little bit better sans the advertising pitch.

I highly recommend this book. A must for any knife nut! :-)

    5 out of 5 stars Early 20th (Twentieth) Century Stanley Tools - A Price Guide With 1909 & 1926 Catalog.......2007-09-07

If your are a collector of old woodworking tools, this is an ideal book to carry with you during that weekend flea market or antique shop search. The illustrations are also very useful when trying recliam old tools with missing parts. Some of the tool pricing seems to be a bit too high.

If you are a Stanley collector, this is a must have.

    3 out of 5 stars just OK.......2006-07-13

This book was just a representative sample of the tools that Stanley made. I was looking for a more comprehensive list and descriptive book. The information in the book could have been found on the internet.

2 out of 5 stars Stanley Tools book not really a genuine price guide........2002-04-10

For a book that claims to be a price guide, it is a rather dissapointing publication. The book consists entirely of reprinted Stanley catalogs from 1909 and 1926. The "price guide" to current values merely consists of a loose page inserted into the book. The loose, 2002-2003 current price guide page that I received was not even cut square! The prices quoted are questionable at best (a stanley #212 in "good" condition for $700!??. I'll take half a dozen, thanks.), with no genuine attempt to clarify price variation as a function of tool type or condition. In the introdcuction the editor so rightly points out that "We do not claim to be experts in the tool collecting field (and the) seperate price guide is only the opinion of the editor."

4 out of 5 stars Reprint Of A Classic Stanley Tools Book With Updated Pricing.......2000-08-24

Tool collectors will enjoy this interesting and useful book of nearly 300 pages which is a reprint of the complete original 1909 and 1926 Stanley Tools Catalogs. The softbound, handy-sized book contains more than 1,200 black and white pictures and details of the tools. It is complete with the original indexes, making tool location easy. A special insert contains year 2001 pricing. Everyone interested in these historical tools will enjoy using this great reference work. Take it with you when you antique for old tools. Add it to your reference library.

      Product Description

A price guide is only as helpful as its prices are current. With this in mind, we offer a new fourth edition of Herbert Kean’s A Price Guide to Antique Tools, its prices taken from the latest live and internet auctions as well as from private sales. As before, there are over 12,000 prices (individual and chart combinations) that represent extraordinary tools, as well as those found in flea markets. There is an explanation for each tool group that allows the reader to judge the condition of a tool, the most critical of all factors when determining price. The chapter on American wooden planes covers over 400 makers, each graded with a single value number, a system that is at the same time simple and comprehensive. To help even more, almost every tool is illustrated with a photograph or line drawing. The section on internet prices explains the mechanisms of electronic auctions and gives tips for successful bidding. If you have ever wished that you could consult with an expert before investing in a tool, this is the book for you. It puts at your fingertips the knowledge and expertise of noted tool collector and dealer Herb Kean, both in determining current prices and in evaluating condition. Altogether, an invaluable book.
