Book Description
More than a cookbook, Christmas Cookies Are for Giving is a celebration of family, friends and the joy of giving. Stories, recipes, tips and more...
Smells of cinnamon...cookie cutters...rolling and baking...eating dough...warm times with friends and family...Christmas cookies are a universal symbol of sweetness and family tradition at Christmas. But the joy of Christmas cookies goes beyond eating. In Christmas Cookies Are for Giving, Kristin Johnson and Mimi Cummins reawaken the fun of giving Christmas cookies, as they remember doing when they lived next door to each other when young children.
From the original short story "The Giving Christmas Cookie," which shows a family brought together by a special cookie recipe at Christmas, to nearly 50 scrumptious recipes with mouth watering photos, to the timely, easy directions for making homemade "Gifts in a Jar," Christmas Cookies Are for Giving shows that old-fashioned Christmas gifts are an antidote to cynicism about Christmas. The secret to celebrating your family and friends may not be in the mall, but in your pantry where you'll find the ingredients to make Butterball Santas, Cranberry Decadent Cookies, and VanillekipferlThe Giving Christmas Cookie.
Give this book as a present, and you may be rewarded when someone you love bakes the goodies in this book for you.

Don't waste your money!.......2005-05-07
What a disappointment! This book contains a few basic recipes, which are padded with recipes for everything from yeast bread to quick bread (with no explanation of what they're doing in a cookie book) and cookie recipes from various marketing boards. There are awesome cookie books on the market (and available from Amazon); even Betty Crocker's would be better than this -- and, for about the same price, you can get Judy Rosenberg's wonderful, detailed, book of awesome TNT cookies. Don't waste your money on this one!
A mouth-watering collection of holiday cookies.......2004-10-11
The collaborative effort of Kristin Johnson and Mimi Cummins, Christmas Cookies Are For Giving: Recipes, Stories And Tips For Making Heartwarming Gifts is the perfect Christmas season cookie compendium that will prove to be a family favorite all the year round. A mouth-watering collection of holiday cookies, Christmas candies, and yuletide snacks, each cookie is enhanced with a full-color photo. In addition to the easy-to-make recipes, kitchen cooks are also provided with tips for baking, storing, giving, and shipping these fragile and delicious treats. From Buttery Pecan Tartletts; Zinger Lemon Bars; and Scottish Shortbread; to Cranberry Decadent Cookies; Hazelnut Cappuccino Cookies; and Butterball Santas, Christmas Cookies Are For Giving is an enthusiastically recommended addition to any family-friendly cookbook collection.
Let it Snow, I'm Baking Cookies.......2003-12-16
"Like many of you, we want to stay connected to our loved ones and to our friends and family around the world. Christmas cookies are more than just baked goods. They are a tangible and tasty link to our past, our traditions, and our memories. They are gifts hand-made with love especially for their recipient."
Kristin Johnson and Mimi Cummins have created a festive book filled with recipes, stories and tips for making unique holiday gifts. Kristin and Mimi lived next door to each other when they were young children and remember the scent of cinnamon, cookies baking and eating cookie dough.
Kristin is an award-winning writer who has written about food online and is famous for her cookie-baking. Mimi Cummings is an avid cookbook-reader and recipe tester. She has worked with professional pastry chefs and also created a website for her grandmother's legendary Christmas cookie recipes. Her site is now the most comprehensive repository of Christmas cookie recipes on the Internet. You can also look for favorite Christmas recipes at the Cookie Exchange forum and even submit your favorite cookie recipe.
"Christmas Cookies Are For Giving" is filled with cooking advice, Christmas stories, cookie recipes and inspiration. You will find heirloom recipes from family and friends, brand-new original recipes, recipes developed by chefs and even a few recipes from Kristin and Mimi's favorite food promotion organizations. Some of the traditional recipes date back to before Mimi and Kristin's ancestors immigrated to the United States.
Each recipe has a full-color photograph to inspire a festive mood and a shopping trip to buy ingredients! Most of the recipes include ingredients you will already have in your kitchen, but you might want to go shopping for mason jars, ribbon and fabric to make the "Cookies in a Jar."
Contents:
The Giving Christmas Cookie - A poignant story about a woman's memories of Vanillekipferl (Vanilla Crescents) from Vienna and how her recipe leads to bringing Christmas spirit to her community.
Christmas Cookie Baking: Tips and Hints -Anyone who is new to baking will appreciate these tips. There are also tips for using the best ingredients and using insulated cookie sheets, which I can also say are highly recommended.
Christmas Cookie Recipes - The recipe for "Vanillekipferl" made with blanched almonds, sugar and vanilla. This recipe also shows you how to make vanilla sugar. There are recipes for everyone from the gourmet coffee connoisseur to art lovers. Children will love the "Cathedral Windows" and "Butterball Santas." Coffee lovers will enjoy the "Walnut Cappuccino" or "Cherry" Biscotti. "Cranberry Spice Bread" is perfect for shipping to friends and family. Just wait until you see the picture for the "Chocolate Cranberry Holiday Bars" and "Pistachio Cookie Tree." The recipe for "Speculaci" includes a story and information on how to paint cookies. You can use the Royal Icing on pg. 130.
Christmas Cookie Gift Presentation - Delicious ideas and great suggestions for making up cookie baskets with additional treats. You might want to include copies of this book to encourage the "giving" tradition.
Shipping Christmas Cookies - What type of cookies can you ship? How do you package them and how do you ship them?
Gifts in a Jar - Great idea if you don't have time to bake. You just pour layers of ingredients into a jar and decorate in a festive way.
Christmas Cookie Stories - The first story is an amusing story about a woman whose marriage is based on Springerle. I believe it after seeing the look on my husband's face when I tried to change a chocolate chip cookie recipe he loves. He won't eat them now unless they have Muscovado sugar in the mixture! There is also an adorable and very amusing story of how a three year old makes her first Christmas cookies. This is the type of cookbook you want to read while sipping a cup of tea while wrapped up in a down comforter by a fireplace.
This cookbook is the most meaningful book I've read this year. It brought back my own memories of my grandmother baking more cookies than we could ever eat in one holiday season. I remember Christmas cookies stored in cookie tins that always tasted like they had just been made. She was famous for always keeping a few cookies hidden in tins for tea after the holidays.
Since no one in our family seems to make as many cookies for the holiday season, I've tried to carry on this tradition by making tins of cookies for my family each year. This book has given me some new ideas and I even found the recipe for "Cathedral Windows" that my aunt makes each Christmas.
"Christmas Cookies Are For Giving" is filled with Christmas spirit, loving memories and delicious buttery cookie recipes! If you are looking for a Christmas gift for your friends and family, this book is more than a cookbook, it is a wish for future holiday memories.

Start a family tradition!.......2003-11-14
I recently got this book and read it in one sitting. It is different from most cookie cookbooks because it includes not only great recipes, but charming stories about family traditions and the cookie recipes themselves. For people who don't bake as a family tradition it makes you want to start!
I most recently made the recipe for bar cookies and shared them with family and friends and they were a big hit. More than 1 person confessed to having the cookies for breakfast because they could not wait until later to have more. The book itself is nice quality and has nice pictures. The recipes are easy to understand so you can make unique cookies without any fancy equipment. I plan on giving the book as a hostess gift for Christmas parties, for a secret santa gift at work, and for teachers gifts - afterall who doesn't love cookies?
Heartwarming Christmas Cookie Book.......2003-11-13
This cookbook not only gives you many wonderful cookie recipes for Christmas, baking tips, how to pack and ship these goodies for sending to friends and family locally or far away, and how to prepare Gift Cookies in a Jar", but the book also begins with a wonderful heartwarming "Dickensian" style story set in modern times, "The Giving Christmas Cookie". This is a story of a family with the Grandmother in a "Home" stricken with Alzheimers, and how a very loving woman who also resides in the "Home" reaches out to the daughter and grandaughter of this woman to bring them back together making Christmas a happy time again for the ailing Grandmother, and also by making the special Christmas Cookies, it brings happiness and joy back into the other ill and lonely peoples lives who also reside at the Home, even if it's just for one day.
Now for the recipes. They are terrific! So many favorites from simpler times when making Christmas cookies was a family affair; a joyous time between mother and daughter, mother and son, or the whole family pitching in. The recipes are created by the authors; recipes from average people with wonderful stories to tell about their experiences in life with making Christmas cookies with their families, and recipes contributed from commerical food companies, and food organizations. I highly recommend this touching and very informative book. It's one you will pass down to your children and grandchildren. Give this to people you love, and give it to yourself. It's one of the best gifts you'll receive this year.

Lots of good stuff to bake as gifts.......1998-09-02
The synopsis that appears with this book, is not for this book at all. There is no mince pie or ginerbread in this book. This is no countdown calendar, either.
However, I really like this book for what it does have: cookies that pack well to mail to faraway friends, some interesting biscotti recipes (I can't wait to try the cranberry pistachio one), and special holiday breads and cakes, including some unusual fruitcakes (one made with dried berries instead of that yucky, gooey stuff in most fruitcakes).

Beautifully done!.......2007-01-30
The gift-giving ideas in this book are incredible, though I'm not a homemaker, so I don't have time to make a tasty treat AND construct such an elaborate vessel in which to transport the gift.
I haven't tried any of the recipes, but the Turkish delight is on my list!
better than most.......2002-11-02
i think i own every single book there is on kitchen gifting. this one is a very good one. i do recommend it. but it also makes me realize i need to write my own. this book goes too far into packaging. i just don't think the packaging is the gift, its what's inside. but still, it is one of the better ones.
Wonderful gift ideas and packaging instructions.......1999-01-18
Loved the clever packages and wrapping ideas for yummy gifts! Clear instructions for container construction and decorating,

Book Description
Milk Glass Moon, the third book in Adriana Trigiani's bestselling Big Stone Gap series, continues the life story of Ave Maria Mulligan MacChesney as she faces the challenges and changes of motherhood with her trademark humor and honesty. With twists as plentiful as those found on the holler roads of southwest Virginia, this story takes turns that will surprise and enthrall the reader.
Transporting us from Ave Maria's home in the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Italian Alps, from New York City to the Tuscan countryside,
Milk Glass Moon is the story of a shifting mother-daughter relationship, of a daughter's first love and a mother's heartbreak, of an enduring marriage that contains its own ongoing challenges, and of a community faced with seismic change.
All of Trigiani's beloved characters are back: Jack Mac, Ave Maria's true love, who is willing to gamble security for the unknown; her best friend and confidant, bandleader Theodore Tip-ton, who begins a new life in New York City; librarian and sexpert Iva Lou Wade Makin, who faces a life-or-death crisis. Meanwhile, surprises emerge in the blossoming of crusty cashier Fleeta Mullins, the maturing of mountain girl turned savvy businesswoman Pearl Grimes, and the return of Pete Rutledge, the handsome stranger who turned Ave Maria's world upside down in
Big Cherry Holler.

Book Review.......2007-10-01
Great book! Author is awesome. First time reading her books & really enjoyed the triology.
GOOD READ.......2007-06-01
I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY STEPMOTHER AND AUNT. THEY BOTH LIKE HER BOOKS REALLY WELL.
Milk Glass Moon.......2007-02-11
I have loved all of the Big Stone Gap Novels - "Milk Glass Moon" is the third in this series which will charm anyone who enjoys a kind of "down home" story, as we journey through life with Ave Maria, her husband,Jack, and their daughter, Etta, and all their friends in Big Stone Gap. I call this one of my "feel good" books (Please note, I feel the same way about Fannie Flagg's books) - you want to pack up and move to Big Stone Gap and be a part of their lives.
The third book in the "Big Stone Gap" quartet.......2006-09-09
After following the troubled MacChesney marriage in the second book, readers now focus on the adolescent Etta as she struggles with growing up. Her mother Ave Maria, too, has difficulty allowing her daughter this passage, especially after losing her toddler son Joe to leukemia.
Yet, like her mother, Etta promises to become a strong young woman. This doesn't make the MacChesneys any easier, though, when longtime family friend Stefano Grassi comes to visit from Italy...
This book is the second of the "Big Stone Gap" quartet; the fourth book is scheduled for release at the end of October 2006.
Wonderful book!.......2006-05-24
Like the 2 previous novels about Big Stone Gap and the MacChesney, I love this one too! I am glad to see that there is another book, The Return to Big Stone Gap, coming out in September.

Book Description
"Milk glass" today is considered neither white nor entirely opaque, as illustrated by more than 450 photos in this book. Drawn from the extensive collections of members of the National Milk Glass Collectors Society, most pieces pictured here have not appeared in any previous book. Even long-time collectors will be surprised to see items they have never encountered. American, English, French and other foreign manufacturers are represented. Some pieces are shown here in extremely rare colors. A special section shows items that have puzzled collectors or whose distinctive qualities merit special attention. Twenty-four pages from early catalogs of the French glasshouses Vallerysthal and Portieux are reprinted in color illustrating exquisite pieces. A checklist of major manufacturers, selected readings, index, and value guide are also provided. A must for lovers of milk glass, this book will appeal to all who appreciate finely-made glass.
Customer Reviews:
Very good reference.......2006-01-30
I liked the fact that it covers a wide range of styles and manufacturers. Not crazy having to refer to the back of the book for pricing. Too much work. Easy/cheap for the editor to update pricing but makes for disruptive reading.
This book is for the collector looking for scarce pieces........1999-02-04
For my purposes this book was only mildly informational. A collector, who is looking for rare or scarce pieces may find this book more educational. By the author's own admission, their audience aim is not for the casual collector or the eager investor. As most of the pieces pictured are listed as rare or scarce I don't think the subjects will be useful for my collecting purposes.
What I found the most interesting about the book was the detailed descriptions of each of the pieces and the wonderful clear pictures accompanying them. The author would not only describe the piece, he would tell you who made the piece and how his conclusion was reached based on other pieces, which have been positively identified. Similar pieces were compared in many instances and subtle differences in designs were noted to educate the reader on how to identify reproductions from the original.
Excellent quality and descriptions.......1998-12-21
The quality of the photographs is excellent. Large and clear photos give the reader a very precise view of the item. The descriptions leave no doubt as to what the item is. The references to reproductions of an item is extremely helpful. This is a long awaited book for any milk glass collector.
