Book Description
The Atkins Diet? Phooey! The South Beach Diet? Feh! What Americans really want to eat is something deep-fried and sugar-packed . . . hence our undying love affair with the beloved donut.
And if anybody knows donuts, it's Sally Levitt Steinberg, America's Donut Princess. As a member of America's royal donut dynasty (her grandfather, Adolph Levitt, invented the donut-making machine), she knows more about this sweet indulgence than anyone else. The Donut Book is the product of Sally's great personal charm and life-long, in-depth donut scholarship.
She covers high points in donut history: the arrival of the first donuts in America with the Dutch settlers in the 17th century, and the donut in World War I, when it became the favorite nosh of the boys in the trenches. She celebrates donut-loving celebrities, from Admiral Byrd to Bill Clinton, as well as some of the most gifted donut bakers on the planet. She visits the campus of Dunkin' Donuts University and reveals the secret that makes Krispy Kreme donuts irresistible. And she identifies the most popular donut in America (glazed) and the runner-up (chocolate).
Then there are the recipes: 29 mouth-watering, soul-satisfying ways to achieve the ultimate sugar rush, from New Orleans beignets to Portuguese malasadas, from Boston crèmes to Alain Ducasse's upscale Donut. And for donut lovers who are willing to hit the road to find their favorite confection, the book comes with an illustrated Donut Lover's Guide to bakeries that serve up the lightest, fluffiest, best dressed, and tastiest donuts.
Customer Reviews:
Purely Addictive! (Just like the donut itself).......2007-03-28
What a wonderfully entertaining and insightful book this is! Author Sally Levitt Steinberg writes so effortlessly, so breezily, that even readers like me (admittedly not a "foodie") won't be able to put the book down. Who would have guessed that a book about donuts could be so utterly fascinating?
Not what I expected.......2007-01-29
I thought this book would have more recipes in it that I could use. Well, it doesn't. It's a great coffee table book. It's lovely to look at and very informative. If you're looking for the history of donuts and something to read while munching on one, here ya go. If you're looking for a cook book - look elsewhere.
Great.......2006-10-29
Watch out, this book will make you gain weight with all the great recipes!
Place next to your other bibles: Larousse or Fanny Farmer ! .......2005-02-17
What a amazing and informative book complete with recipes, historical and advertising minutiae, an IQ test (even!), geographical and ingredient tours plus a metaphysical (who knew?!) view about our sweet treat.
The author writes with such ease and fascination for her topic that I was hungry for more! And I not a donut eater! Buy it and eat!
A donut history blending fiction, fact, pictures, and fun.......2005-02-13
The hole truth and nothing but is revealed in Sally Levitt Steinberg's The Donut Book, a 'bible' of donut history blending fiction, fact, pictures and fun. Yes, there are almost thirty recipes here - but don't buy The Donut Book for its recipes alone; it's the background history and whimsical cultural insights which makes for such a winner.

Originally published in 1973, Who Needs Donuts is a sweet visual feast that will have kids (and nostalgic parents) poring over its rich tableaus for hours. Every inch of each black-and-white page is covered in detailed, delightful drawings, at times bringing to mind the two-dimensional cartoons of Saul Steinberg, at others the scratchy realism of Lynda Barry's comics. In fact, there is so much to look at in this short, simple story that new discoveries are sure to be made with each successive reading (of which there are bound to be countless).
Young Sam, clad (inexplicably, yet charmingly) in cowboy duds, already has a nice house with a big yard and lots of friends, but he feels nonetheless that something is missing. He mounts his trusty trike and heads for the big city in search of one thing: donuts, and not just a few, but "More than his mother and father could ever buy him."
His quest is rife with humor and adventure, not to mention a man in paisley suit and a woman named Pretzel Annie. Kids will adore the no-holds-barred kookiness displayed throughout (a street vendor selling fried oranges with optional mayonnaise; a "self-service" restaurant where the waiters look exactly like the customers), and adults will smile at the hippie-era moral that love is all you need. As the flap illustration warns, "This book is addictive," but this sugar habit need not be kicked. (Ages 5 to 10) --Brangien Davis
Book Description
Sam’s love of donuts takes him to the Big City where he makes friends with Mr. Bikferd, a world class collector of donuts. But when Mr. Bikferd falls in love with Pretzel Annie, the prophecy of an old homeless woman comes true: “Who needs donuts when you’ve got love?” Mr. Bikferd bequeaths his donut collection to Sam, who uses it to save the old homeless woman from drowning in a basement flooded with coffee.
This is a reissue of Mark Alan Stamaty’s masterpiece of the absurd, first published 30 years ago and out of print nearly as long. With an illustration style that mixes a benign Hieronymus Bosch with an urban Where’s Waldo?, Stamaty’s off-the-wall humor is on target for little kids and big kids today.

ON A SCALE OF 1-5 6 STARS!!!.......2007-08-16
THIS BOOK HAS GIVEN 2 ADULTS HOURS OF GIGGLES! A CHILDHOOD ABSOLUTE FAVORITE IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR OUR KIDS' CONSUMPTION!! THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING EVERYONE HAS SAID IT IS...SIMPLY AMAZING. THE ONLY THING WE WOULD LIKE MORE IS TO HAVE A CUP OF COFFEE WITH THE AUTHOR TO PICK THAT AMAZINGLY INSANE BRAIN OF HIS!!!
(WE WOULD SPRING FOR THE DONUTS!)
PS:DID I MENTION THIS IS A GREAT BOOK FOR KIDS TOO?
Quirky but cool .......2007-01-09
I gave this book to one of my kids for her birthday. She loves looking at the elaborate drawings (which are also a little freaky) and the idea behind the story. Definitely a collector's item!
One of my very favorites.......2006-12-09
This was one of my very favorite books as a child, and I've wanted to find a reprint. Finally it is available!!
This book is chock full of details. Every page is filled with fun and silly drawings, and about a ba-jillion little images that tell stories within stories within stories. I remember I loved to search the pages for something I hadn't seen before, and then create new stories from my own imagination.
This book is about a happy boy that one day thinks he needs something else. He becomes obsessed with doughnuts and journeys to try to collect them all-- he can't get enough. In the process, he adventures away from home and all through the city.
There is plenty of ridiculousness and just plain loony stuff in this book, which makes it particularly fun and memorable. This is a perfect gift for a very creative or imaginitive child (or adult). "Who Needs Donuts?" is fun and entertaining, but also makes you feel happy with what you have in life.
So unique, WOW!.......2005-08-28
"Oh WOW" I thought when I stumbled upon this book at the bookstore. The detail is amazing, crazy, organic and so entertaining. Perfect for kids and adults too with a good sense of humor, and imagination.
"Who needs donuts when you've got love?" is the theme of the story. So funny.
I can already think of 4 people I would give this book to for Christmas. :)
This book's bound to be a classic (if it isn't already!)
I really appreciate the detail in his work,
So,if you're looking for a good laugh or interesting bizzaro artwork/illustrations-definitely consider purchasing it.
Finally, a copy of this book!.......2004-04-17
I was so excited when my mom told me she found "Who Needs Donuts?" on Amazon! We have been searching for my original 70's copies with no luck. I am thrilled to have a brand new copy for my son. I still find this book to be fascinating and wonderfully entertaining. The illustrations are unbelievable. This book was one of my favorites as a child, and now I can enjoy it again as a mother. Thanks so much for re-releasing it!!

My son loves Disappearing Donuts!.......2007-03-14
My son absolutely loves this book. He is just turning 3 and when we read at night I have to read him all the Scooby books (the santa mystery, the dognapping mystery and disappearing donuts). He loves to tell me who ate the donuts before it happens!
About time we got a Scooby Reader!.......2000-12-07
I just purchased this book for my Scooby-lovin' first grade daughter. The story and illustrations are cute - not scary. Perfect for a 5 or 6 year-old. The age states K-grade 2, however, an average K - grade 1 child will not be able to read this without help. The sentences are short, but many of the words are on a 2nd grade level. The best thing is that the dialogue is written to sound just like the t.v. show... Fans will LOVE that!

Customer Reviews:
Nice synopsis of tv show.......2007-08-23
We've seen this tv episode at least 20 times, so my daughter loved getting the book. It is designed for early readers, so the writing is not as rich as the original George books, but it does have the art from the tv episode so kids will recognize it. They use two pages in the back for coloring which I wish they had used to develop the story better, but. . . it's a nice, easy read version of the tv episode.

Customer Reviews:
A COOL, FUNNY MYSTERY!.......2005-02-18
I think this book is cool. It's a book of mystery and humor. At first I thought it was going to be about a goose stealing a donut but it ended out to be that the goose was trying to take the statue. This book is cool. I recommend it to kids of any age. Its a funny book and you will want to read it over and over and still find it funny and mysterious.
A fun mystery.......2005-02-17
I like this book because it is the best book I ever read.I think the other students should read this book. It is really
funny. It shows me to never give up.
Cool Plot!.......2005-02-15
It's Detective Donuts birthday, and they call him for a case becuase Professor Drake was missing. The goose was not Professor Drake's assistant. His birthday present was not what he subspected. This children's book is perfect for people who like mysteries mixed with humor.
Very Punny!.......2004-07-26
The illustrations in this book reveal the truth about what Detective Donut's package really
contains, who the Professor's assistant really is, and who really deserves the credit for
catching the criminal. Children will love knowing more about the action than does the
main character himself. This book may help students appreciate and pay more attention to
illustrations. It is also a good introduction to some commonly used idioms. Mouse's self-
satisfied humbleness is in marked contrast with Donut's foolish pride. Readers will have a
great time while learning these lessons.
Mom and Teacher
Whatley do you get when you mix Sam ... and donuts?.......2002-09-19
A delightful book that is as fun for you to read to your child as it is for them to listen to.
... The allusions to Bogart films and the really bad puns (visual and otherwise) serve to introduce your child to a whole new level of fun with language and, around every turned page there's something new.
... you'll find things in this book that will keep you as entertained as your child right up until the final page when the lights go out. ...
