Bipolar for Dummies.......2007-08-18
This is the best book I have read on bipolar.
I have always had doubts about my diagnosis of being bipolar, but after reading this book I feel much better about the effects the disease has had on me. Not only did the book confirm my suspicions about my disease, but it gave me ways to counteract some of the feelings I have/had.
I have suggested that my wife read the book (when I am finished) as it is equally directed to your support team as it is to the patient.
Helpful.......2007-07-30
This gave insight into the bipolar thinkng and help for me to understand it better and deal with it in others.
okay but not that great.......2007-07-16
I read some of it but it really didn't give the info I wanted or needed.
A Must Have!.......2007-06-09
This is, by far, the best book on understanding Bipolar Disorder--that is, if you can get past the "dummies" label. It is a "must read" for people who have been diagnosed and for anyone who knows or loves someone with the disorder. It helps identify stressors and triggers, teaches how to take control of your treatment, how to select a mental health specialist, how to maintain mood stability, how to make positive lifestyle changes and gives you medication and other treatment options. All of this and with a dash of humor! I highly recommend it!
Great overall view of bipolar disorder.......2007-03-11
This book contains the basics of it all. Nothing to indept mostly if your in a real crisis. But it does give you a little understanding of ssi which a lot of books look over. I would definitfly recommend this book to another.

Book Description
"What do you have to be depressed about?" Bet you've heard that one before. Or how about, "You're depressed? Just get over it!" Easier said than done, right? Or here's a favorite, "They have a pill for that now, you know."
Unfortunately, such naïve armchair psychology rarely works for someone suffering from the very real plight of depression. All it does is seek to trivialize depression and characterize depressed people as "whiners" who have nothing better to do than to "complain about their lives." But the truth is, depression is a very real problem. In fact, the World Health Organization estimates that, on any given day, 121 million people worldwide suffer from depression. And depression rates continue to increase – for example, kids exhibit depression at nearly ten times the rate of previous generations. Theories abound as to why depression rates are increasing, but regardless of the cause, this scourge continues to rob its victims of happiness, joy, and the capacity to give and receive love.
So why Depression For Dummies, when there's already a glut of self-help books on the market peddling so-called cures and remedies for depression? Because this book satisfies the need for a straight-talking, no-nonsense resource on depression. The only agenda of Depression For Dummies is to present you with the facts on depression and explain the options for dealing with it. Rest assured, this is no infomercial in a yellow and black cover.
Here's just a sampling of what you'll find in Depression For Dummies:
- Demystifying the types of depression
- Discovering what goes on in the body of a depressed person
- Detecting and diagnosing depression
- Seeking help through therapy and medication
- Modifying depressed behavior and solving life's headaches
- Dealing with depression resulting from grief and relationship issues
- Cutting through the hype of alternative treatments for depression
- Moving beyond depression: Avoiding relapses and pursuing a happy life
- Top Ten lists on getting rid of a your bad mood and helping your kids and other family members out of depression
So, whatever your level of depression – whether you suffer from occasional bouts or you find yourself seriously debilitated by depression – Depression For Dummies can give you the insight and tools you need to once again find enjoyment and happiness in life. All it takes is one step.

It will just induce more depression .......2005-12-03
Overall proably one of the worst books ive ever read in my entire life. No wonder why so many people suffer from Depression. This is half the battle. Terrible advice (such as eating chocalate and being happy). I respect the fact that it does break some stuff down, but it again doesnt answer many vital questions that a depressed person would like to know.
There were a few good sentences in this book. But a lot of it didnt get emphaised well. Once again, it seems to be another book that has been corrupted on these topics.
Pass on this one.......2004-08-04
This book was written to sell books, not to help people. If it were possible to end depression by intellectualizing it, this might help.
Very Helpful.......2004-03-02
I've read several books on depression and I must say that Depression For Dummies is far more practical and easy to read than the others. The exercises are truly useful and applicable to everyday life. I especially liked the section on relapse prevention. I hadn't known that relapse is such a high risk and it seems odd that other books I've seen on self-help for depression barely bring the subject up. If you want serious help with moods and depression I can't think of a better book to recommend.
such a great book- helped me so much!!.......2004-02-29
My therapist suggested that I read Depression for Dummies. We worked together on some of the exercises and they really helped me. I really liked the way the authors explained how medication worked. Also enjoyed the chapter called "Getting out of bed." Thanks so much!
Smith & Elliott outdid themselves.......2003-09-28
Excellent job. I will recommend this book liberally to my clients who suffer from depression or have a family member who does. This magical blend of education, empathy, humor, and practical tips will be a perfect adjunct to psychotherapy. Thank you!

Book Description
It's a great blessing when a new mom with postpartum depression (PPD) is fortunate enough to be diagnosed early by a knowledgeable medical practitioner or therapist. But without guidance, it isn't always clear where the boundary between normal baby blues and PPD lies. As with any other illness, the quicker that PPD is identified and treated, the faster the woman will recover.
Postpartum Depression For Dummies can help you begin the process of determining what’s going on with you and give you a better idea of where you fall so that you can get yourself into proper treatment right away. The book covers all aspects of PPD, from its history and its origins to its effects on women and their families to the wide variety of treatments available—including conventional Western medicine, psychological therapy, alternative medical treatments, and self-care measures. Postpartum Depression For Dummies reveals:
-
Why some doctors may be hush-hush about PPD
-
How to distinguish between pregnancy hormone changes, "baby blues," and PPD
-
The difficulties of getting a proper diagnosis
-
The role and importance of a therapist
-
The benefits of medication for depression
-
Alternative treatments with a successful track record
-
How to find the right balance of psychological, medical, and alternative treatment
-
Ways you can help foster recovery
-
The nutrition you need to care for yourself properly
-
How to help your partner help you
Postpartum Depression For Dummies also provides the additional resources you need—web sites, organizations, and further reading—to help avoid the unnecessary suffering caused by undiagnosed and untreated PPD and survive and thrive as a new mom.
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive, wonderful book!.......2007-10-10
I am very grateful to Dr. Bennett for writing such an easy-to-understand, comprehensive, and compassionate book about Postpartum Depression. I have struggled with PPD for 9 months before seeking treatment, not realizing that what I was experiencing was an illness. Dr. Bennett's book has shed light on many of my symptoms, as well as giving me some glimmer of hope that I may someday feel better. It is a saving grace with this illness not to feel so lonely and isolated, and Dr. Bennett's book provides a warm and helpful approach to overcoming the experience of PPD.
Nothing short of a miracle!.......2007-09-27
I appreciate this book in every aspect that it was written. I could not have found something more informational, inspirational and incredible. Dr. Shoshana, I applaud your determination to help women from everywhere learn more about PPD. The great thing is that you focus so much on what can be done to recover from this illness because you were there at one point in your life. Your book inspires the hope in me that one day I will be myself again.
For women out there who are facing this very illness that I am now recovering from, buy this book. You won't regret it, I promise!
Andrea Schneider, LCSW.......2007-06-13

I regularly refer my clients to this book to help them with their recovery. Women and their partners have access to validation, support, and facts to assist in their recovery and transition into parenthood.
Way to go, Dr. Shosh!

Fantastic! Perfect for New Moms!.......2007-05-31
In my perspective, as both a 2-time PPD survivor and leader of a postpartum support network for the last 8 years, this book is a phenominal resource for mothers and families coping with the illness. Dr. Bennett's style is warm, comforting and enjoyable to read. The book's format is perfect for busy moms who can only steal a moment from time to time to read a few pages.
A Great Voice.......2007-05-02
I run a postpartum support group that helps moms dealing with PPD. This book has been a great help in giving moms in need the words and voice to get help. This book is easy to read written by a fantastic clinician that speaks directly to moms!!! This book is a must for anyone who works with mothers dealing with postpartum depression.

Very Informative and helpful.......2007-10-02
There aren't many books on this subject, and this is certainly the best one I have come across. Well researched, and well written; the authors do a good job at communicating not only the causes and effects of SAD, but proven and innovative therapies to help people through what is a wide-spread disorder. The authors also do a good job at making the content simple and engaging for different audiences. This will be the go-to resource for both patients and therapists looking to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
