Read "Taoist Yoga:: Alchemy and Immortality" instead, or also!.......2007-06-25
If you want to understand what Taoist meditation is all about, and help yourself avoid the many dangerous obstacles of this very unique and wonderful - yet very serious - practice, you should at least read the book i suggested, as well. I can see people are deriving some benefit from Chia's book, but just from reading the table of contents and the first few pages, I can honestly recommend that you should study the methods of cultivating essential nature and eternal life from an immortal master of the advanced training methods, which Chia speaks of in the sample. The benefits you will derive from Charles Luk's translation of "The methods of cultivating essential nature and eternal life," called "Taoist Yoga..." will far surpass anything you will attain from Chia's, and incidentally help you avoid the many potential problems that can develop in this type of spiritual training. There are also some misconceptions about Taoist meditation in Chia's book that I can see right off the bat, and if you take my word, and check out Luk's book, you will at least be able to practice Chia's more effectively, and less dangerous! Take this sincere advice from someone who hasn't read but the first few pages of Chia's book, but who has actual first hand experience with the TRUE (complete, as opposed to Chia's incomplete) mechanisms of the generative force, vitality, spirit, the microcosmic orbit, and the original cavity of spirit, etc., etc., etc.. One thing I can't tell from the book is whether the whole method is based on turning back the flow of generative fluid, which is what real Taoist meditation is based on. One definite gross misconception that is readily available to view in the sample of Chia's is that Taoist meditation is not dependent on stopping the flux of thoughts in your mind while practicing. If you are TRULY SERIOUS about spiritual growth, progress, and prolonging and enjoying your life, then you must obtain and study Luk's book (AT LEAST as a companion to this one), which also warns against taking advice from the wrong guide, on numerous occasions. If you are NOT serious about attaining the many wonderful benefits that this advanced training method can give, I suggest you not practice Tao Yoga at all, and focus on something less serious for now. Those are my sincerest words, and I stand by them. I feel a responsibility to at least tell you my perspective, so you can make a more intelligent, wise decision.
Mind Training - Energy Circulation.......2007-02-07
This book describes the circulation of chi through the body. It is extremely helpful in pinpointing areas where the chi naturally builds. I have been using the techniques described in the book for several weeks now and feel more relaxed, food digests more readily as well as feeling more energetic.
Great book on energy practice.......2005-12-13
I am working through this book.
The main practice is the microcosmic orbit which uses the prenatal energy system. When you were in the womb you received all your nourishment and energy through the navel and this followed an energy pathway to the base of the spine and all the way up to your head, and back down the front to the navel to the dan tien where it is stored.
This exercise trains you get the pre natal energy flowing again.
Normally, as you go through life your energy does not flow upwards properly and becomes blocked contributing to the ageing process etc.
If you have any interest in energy practice, you should work with the microcosmic orbit. The only trouble is it may take a while before a conscious flow can be felt.
I recommend the five tibetans, which is a simple exercise routine you can do in five minutes. These are also referred to as the fountain of youth exercises. This also brings the energy up to your higher centers or psychic vortexes, and restores their function to youthful levels, thereby retarding the aging process. You can feel the kundalini (base of spine) energy being activated.
If you are new to energy, I recommend you also get Quantum Touch, which has some great exercises and visualizations which can literally have you moving energy within minutes.
Combining a few different methods has worked well for me. As with anything, the more you practice, the more you improve.
If you were to find this review helpful, please click yes.
Great Book!.......2005-11-17
I can't recomend this book enough! As I was dealing with the after effects of a kundalini awakening I found the exercises in this book to be amazingly helpful.
Works Wonders.......2004-10-30
I have been working with Mantak Chia's materials for the past 17 years. Originally I found few of his books ine one small Chinese store, and decided to give them a shot. I was thrilled when even my very first attempt resulted in noticing the difference. While the books were wonderful I did wish to have personal instruction, too. Lucky for me, about few weeks after I purchased the books, Mantak Chia was teaching a workshop in Toronto. Even though thsee initial practices are rather simple, it helped attending a workshop, too. I have attended all the workshops he came to teach in Toronto at the time. In the meantime, videos came out, so in time I got those too.
You may or may not want to attend a workshop, but if for any reason you don't feel comfortable proceeding on your own, you may consider getting Mantak Chias videos. I like them very much (I have just about all of them) Another excellent resource is the book Qigong Empowerment.
The focus of this book, Awaken Healing Energy Through Tao, is learing to circulate the energy through Microcosic Orbit. It is the essential practice for all future practices in Taoist Alchemy. The book also gives an overview of practices you can do if you wish to continue with your studies and practice.
It is not hard to do. It is really simple. If you are new to this, the more complex part than the practice may be the use of different names in chinese for different points and a lot of theoretical information behind the practice. The practice essentially involves guiding the energy with your imagination - generating it, circulating it and storing it in your body.
You can experience many benefits of this practice from the very beginning. What I experienced from the very beginning is a sense of calm. If I were ever upset and then begin doing microcosmic orbit, the upset would immediately disperse and dissolve. Doing microcosmic orbit practice had a centering effect. The practice is very, very simple but the benefits are far greater than may be initially apparent.
As you keep on storing the energy, whenever any part of your body (organs) need more energy, they can use the energy you have stored instead of depleting the energy from other parts of your body. This in itself contributes to health. However, if you choose to continue your learning, there are many more advanced practices designed specifically for healing.

Book Description
Since its first publication in 1938,
Larousse Gastronomique has been an unparalleled resource. In one volume, it presents the history of foods, eating, and restaurants; cooking terms; techniques from elementary to advanced; a review of basic ingredients with advice on recognizing, buying, storing, and using them; biographies of important culinary figures; and recommendations for cooking nearly everything.
The new edition, the first since 1988, expands the book’s scope from classic continental cuisine to include the contemporary global table, appealing to a whole new audience of internationally conscious cooks. Larousse Gastronomique is still the last word on béchamel and béarnaise, Brillat-Savarin and Bordeaux, but now it is also the go-to source on biryani and bok choy, bruschetta and Bhutan rice.
Larousse Gastronomique is rich with classic and classic-to-be recipes, new ingredients, new terms and techniques, as well as explanations of current food legislation, labeling, and technology. User-friendly design elements create a whole new Larousse for a new generation of food lovers.
Customer Reviews:
excellent cooking resource.......2007-05-16
I find a lot of information about lots of different cuisines and numerous recipes. Its serves me very well.
Indispensable.......2007-04-15
Larousee gastronomique is indispensable for anyone who cares about food: it is an encyclopedia of recipes, techniques and facts without which your cooking and eating will be poorer.
fantastic.......2007-04-05
A must for anyone who considers him/herself a chef, or even just a "cook." The recipes are excellent and the entries are thorough. Since no one book can cover all possible dishes that exist, there are obvious lacunae, especially when it comes to certain ethnic cuisines. Overall, ethnic dishes that are well-known in France are certainly listed, which do not always match the ethnic dishes that are popular in America. But as far as the basics go--the characteristics of basuic ingredients, and essential techniques--it's a great book. Much better than the Penguin (aka Oxford) Companion to Food.
GREAT GIFT FOR A GOURMET COOK.......2007-01-11
I purchased this book for my daughter at her request. As I am always amazed at her cooking talents, I did not hesitate, as it was a Christmas present. I thought I could purchase it at my local Border's store when they held a grand opening for less than Amazon, boy, was I mistaken! She absolutely loves this book and every time I visit she has learned a new fact, receipe or some very odd ingredient that she is determined to try. She would recommend this book for anyone, great gourmet chef or just a beginner. It really helps when you are looking at receipes from any of the magazines and have never heard of several of the ingredients.
The most complete and authentick cookbook.......2007-01-11
The title says it all. This particular revision is a perfect upgrade to what is already French cooking's finest expository.

Some books hang around long enough to become part of the language, and then they're considered classics, but the real classic earns its status with overwhelming merit; such is the case with the Larousse Gastronomique. It's been around since 1938, with 8,500 recipes, over a thousand pages of encyclopedic knowledge from A (Abaisse--a pastry making term) to Z (Zwieback--a kind of biscuit), and the final word in matters culinary. Handy for cooking terms, kitchen queries, and "hey, did you know ..." Sunday afternoons, the Gastronomique deserves respect and a big place on your cookbook shelf.
Book Description
The ultimate guide to classical cuisine, now updated for the era of food processors and microwaves, completely freshly illustrated in full color and Americanized by the renowned author of
Tastings.
Over 900 full-color photographs and 70 black-and-white illustrations.

Family Tradition.......2006-06-07
I own a copy of this version of Larousse's Gastronomique for each of my three children. My own copy is in tatters, I use it all the time.I am bilingual (French/English) and know that for my children this is the best resource for them to access the traditions of French culinary practices. My oldest daughter said it was her "bible" during culinary school. She said it gave her a major advantage over her classmates when preparing anything from an actual recipe to creating reports and original recipes. Other students were constantly referencing her copy as well. I was told about this book several years ago by a friend who gives it as a wedding gift. This book is indispensible in our family and well worth the cost we have invested in it every time. I can always find a particular recipe I recall from my days of living in Provence or Paris in the pages of this wonderful piece of art (translated or not, it is not weak.)

This is the definitive reference book for all things cooking. Wanna know how much roux is required to thicken a liquid to sauce consistency? How to cook a bear? From the esoteric to the mundane, it's all in this book. I sometimes buy exotic meats or vegetables secure in the knowledge that Larousse will tell me what to do with them. You won't be dissappointed in this purchase.
A disappointing, diluted version of an epicurean classic........2001-12-13
Don't expect this to be the classic French Larousse, which comes in a condensed one-volume version and a full three-volume set.
The American Larousse is, as many things American tend to be, watered- and dumbed-down for our nation's less-sensitive palates.
Just as with its French cousin, the American Larousse, contains many color plates featuring dishes and ingredients featured in its pages. However, the the American Larousse appears to have approximately one-third of the content of the French version. As a purely illustrative example, the American version's section on sweetbreads is approximately two columns' worth of loosely-packed print, while the French version features six pages of dense text on the subject.
Especially in light of its cost, the American Larousse is a bitter disappointment. The epicure wishing to have ready access to a gastronomic bible would be well-advised to obtain the French version in its place.
Disappointing.......2001-05-26
This book is a real disappointment. For one thing, though it contains a whole lot of information and many recipes the presentation is very poor ,cluttered and not easily palatable. Also as a christian,I am distessed by the fact that some recipes contain the use of blood as an ingredient in spite of God's clear command to man not to consume blood. The book is clearly not worth having in your food library.
Are you sure this is the one for you???.......2001-03-07
I think that prospective purchasers of this book should be aware that a three volume Larousse Gastronomique exists and that it is available at Amazon.fr., and, if they would be interested in that one over this one, perhaps they should look into it before buying this one. That set, however, costs.

Customer Reviews:
Ne Plus Ultra.......2006-12-14
This classic is definitely encyclopedic. As thick as a major metropolitan phonebook, nearly every possible food is listed with a brief description, history, simple preparation instructions, and the occasional recipe. Obviously, the contents have a French cuisine slant, but the majority of the alphabetical entries are global in origin. For example, persimmons and pumpkins have long entries, even though they are New World fruits. This book works best if you have an ingredient or technique in mind, and then research what to do with it. This book will not be the back bone of your cookbook collection, but it answers the questions that are too far-ranging for more focused texts. Well worth the money, and no experimenter should be without it.

Filled with practical information on everything anyone would need to know about wine, this wonderfully illustrated reference book will appeal to the novice as well as the serious wine enthusiast. Subjects such as reading a wine label, selecting wine, storing, uncorking, decanting, and serving are all carefully explained and illustrated.
For the serious enthusiast, the greatest value of this book will be its comprehensive coverage of the wine-producing regions of the world. Each section begins with a beautiful color illustration of the area, with the major districts, rivers, and cities highlighted. A short history and analysis of each region follows, with a discussion of the types of wines produced in each district, the specific oenological properties that make the region unique, and the appelations of the area. Though a fairly large book (more than 600 pages), this would be an invaluable reference to bring along on your next wine-tasting trip--whether that takes you to The Rhone, Burgundy, Napa, or Walla Walla.
Book Description
A visual and cultural feast, this generously illustrated book is a comprehensive reference to the world's vineyards and to the enjoyment of wine. Hundreds of full-color photographs, maps and drawings illustrate the country-by-country, vineyard-by-vineyard descriptions of all the world's wine regions from the United States and Europe to New Zealand and the Orient. Full of practical information, the book also details the intricacies of pairing wine with food, wine selection and etiquette, as well as historical and technical information about how wine is made.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful masterpiece.......2005-08-17
The book is simply amazing and covers all the wine-producing regions of the world. I bought this book to my husband as a gift and he really likes it for it is being so complete about wine. I think this book is useful for both connaisseurs and those who try to become a connaisseur. I recommend this book to everyone interested in wine.
The book contains detailed information about production, bottles, regions, basically everything that is worth to know about wine.
A wine Encyclopdeia For Everyone........2000-08-03
This wine encyclopedia has all the information that you will need about wine. It is useful for anyone, from the novice to the connoisseur. I agree with my fellow reviewer that France gets the lion's share of the attention, though I did find the section on Italian wines to be quite good. What was particularly useful was detailed information about the various wine producing regions, the major vinyards, and how to read labels, which at times can be confusing. All of this gives the reader enough information to make really good choices. What was a welcome surprise was the section on the Czeck Republic and Slovenia, and the quality wines that they produce. The section on the United States could have been longer, and I expect that to be expaned in updated editions. Overall, an excellent book on wine.
Wine with a French twist.......1997-02-12
As you'd expect of Larousse, this hefty tome has a decidedly French twist, carrying approximately 170 pages about the wines of France compared with a scanty 37 pages about all of the United States. But France remains arguably the center of the wine world, and this one contains just about everything you'd ever want to know about French wine and a fair amount about the rest of the world, too
