Book Description

Hugh Johnson, the preeminent wine writer of our time, now brings to his fans around the world his first major new book in a decade: this stylish, intimate, and delightfully opinionated autobiographical tour through the world of wine. A Life Uncorked weaves Johnson's wide-ranging ruminations, memories, and observations on his remarkable life together with information on every aspect of wine--from its technical production to its cultural significance. In luminous, utterly engaging prose, he taps into his enormous experience to consider topics such as tasting, cellaring, choosing, understanding, comparing, and buying wine, as well as wine's more ephemeral and personal pleasures, lures, and mysteries.
At the heart of A Life Uncorked is the idea that wine is more than a drink; its characteristics link it directly to memory, to locations around the world where grapes are grown and wine is made, and to the dining rooms, restaurants, bars, and gardens where we consume it. Johnson takes us to all of these places and many more in this delightful and revelatory memoir. Peppered with anecdotes throughout, A Life Uncorked simultaneously educates and entertains with its absorbing perspective on the complex and fascinating world of wine from one of its most well-known and well-liked aficionados.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful, relaxing wine tour - through life!.......2006-09-04

I must admit that I've never followed the author's wine advice but I cut my wine teeth on his fantastic wine atlas. I bought this book on a whim and it's taken me months to drift through it - not because it's a hard read rather it's sort of a wine vacation experience best experienced without haste.

If you're a wine fan who needs a vacation but can't get away; read a chapter or two and live vicariously.

btw, yes, there is an oft-quoted sentence disparanging GWB and RP in the same whack. Not entirely off the mark though, is it?!

5 out of 5 stars A wine lovers must have.......2006-07-08

A Life Uncorcked is a celebration of the vine. It is a fun read and very informative. I especially love his take on the current wine rating systems, finally someone with sense!

5 out of 5 stars A corking good read!.......2006-05-01

I recently published a brief review of this wonderful book in the print edition of The Washington Examiner newspaper (www.examiner.com -- April 29 & 30th Weekend Edition). Here is that review:

Recently, I had the opportunity to catch up with world-renowned wine writer Hugh Johnson as he breezed through town promoting his new memoir on the inner workings of the wine world, A Life Uncorked. This is a deeply personal book. Yet, as Johnson admits, it is not an autobiography. Rather, this memoir is a personal journey, as much about wine as it is about his life.

For Johnson, wine is essentially "a social game" not merely an interest or a hobby. Wine is "about human relations, hospitality, bonding-all the maneuvers of social life-and all under the influence, however benign, of alcohol." Who can argue with that?

This social experience is richly transformative: "However good a wine may be, sentiment can make it better" and "with the right companion, a single wine can be a continuing conversation." In person, as in his writings, Johnson comes off as witty, personable, and charming, and his approach to wine is wonderfully infectious.

Never one to shy from a fight, Johnson (a Brit) takes issue with Robert Parker, the preeminent American wine critic. Johnson criticizes Parker's wine scoring system, which treats wines "like American high school students"-50 points just for showing up, 60 = dreadful, 70 = pretty poor, 80 = not bad, etc. Johnson decries the effect this approach has had on the wine industry, where wines are Parkerized to get higher scores.

Ultimately, Johnson's unpretentious and highly enjoyable attitude towards wine appreciation is compelling. As he plainly explains, "It depends on whether you see wine primarily as a drink or as a recreational substance. In a drink you look for something refreshing and satisfying without too loud a voice, not too intrusive on your food or your thoughts each time you take a sip." So take a page from Hugh's book, and enjoy a jolly good read with glass in hand.

Book Description

John and Erica Platter, the couple who helped bring South African wine into the main-stream with the country's first wine travel guide, have now fixed their trail-blazing tendencies on the rest of the continent with their remarkably original book, Africa Uncorked, Travels in Extreme Wine Territory. It doesn't meander through the manicured rows of the common wine locales-it's wine tasting with a machete and a typhoid shot. But that sort of thing has never dissuaded the Platter's. For wine journalists living in a place like Shaka's Rock KwaZulu-Natal, the rough road is "Polo" to their "Marco".

Africa Uncorked hikes to the outer regions of wine: from, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, to the Indian Ocean Islands of Madagascar, Mauritius and Reunion; back onto the East African mainland to Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania; through Zimbabwe; and west to Namibia. They make interesting and unusual wine and food discoveries, bump into some extraordinary characters and pass through places that have been red-taped to tourists for decades. Unlike many wine travel narratives, the wine at the end of the road does not over shadow the road itself-the wine in the glass mixes with the collected impressions of the people and places along the way.

The Platters also take a long look at the forces that have made the modern state of African wine what it is-from poverty to politics and religion-and represent them with the delicacy and insight of immediate experience. This book is a genuine first!

John and Erica Platter helped bring south African wine to the knowledge of the rest of the world with the country's first wine travel guide, and their Africa Uncorked, Travels In Extreme Wine Territory follows the idea of unusual African wines through Africa in a travelogue which journeys from Algeria to Madagascar and beyond. Unusual wine and food discoveries, strange characters, and adventure permeates Africa Uncorked, which provides equal attention to cultural and culinary discoveries on the continent. A bold topic, a bold adventure, and a bold approach makes Africa Uncorked hard to put down.

Book Description

Uncorked is the first book to quench our curiosity about the inner workings of one of the world's most popular drinks. Prized for its freshness, vitality, and sensuality, champagne is a wine of great complexity. Mysteries aplenty gush forth with the popping of that cork. Just what is that fizz? Can you judge champagne quality by how big the bubbles are, by how long they last, by how they behave before they fade? Why exactly does serving champagne in a long-stemmed flute prolong both the chill and the effervescence?

Through lively prose and a wealth of state-of-the-art, high-speed photos, this book unlocks the door to the mystery of what champagne effervescence is really all about. Gérard Liger-Belair provides an unprecedented close-up view of the beauty in the bubbles--images that look surprisingly like lovely flowers, geometric patterns, even galaxies as they rise through the glass and then burst forth on the surface. He fully illustrates: how bubbles form not on the glass itself but are instead "born" out of debris stuck on the glass wall; how they rise; and how they burst--the most picturesque and functional stage of the bubble's fleeting life.

Uncorked also provides a colorful history of champagne, tells us how it is made, and asks: could global warming spell its demise? Bubbly may tickle the nose, but this book tackles what the nose and the naked eye cannot--the spectacular science of that which gives champagne its charm and gives us our pleasure.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for Chanpagne Lovers.......2006-11-27

EVERYTHING you've ever wanted to know about champagne and its bubbles. Why they form, how they form where they do, why they change size as they near the surface, what happens when they reach the surface. High speed, micro photography at its best.

3 out of 5 stars Stick to the Science.......2005-09-10

A short review for a short book -- the science is fascinating; unfortunately the author mixes his knowledge of science with his lack of knowledge about wine. While I share his love of Champagne, some of M. Liger-Belair's other vinous statements are either not based on fact or are based on opinion -- that would be welcome whether I agreed with his opinions or not, if it didn't confuse the original thesis, which is, "this is a book about the science of bubbles." Still, this book is worth reading if only for the terrific, entertaining foreward. Cheers.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Book about my Favorite Drink.......2005-06-23

The problem with Champagne, at least for me, is that it tends to disappear too fast. That was also the problem with this book. It reads too fast. Before I knew it the pleasure was behind me. Uncorked starts with the history of this famous drink, including the revelation that Dom Pierre Perignon was originally told by the Pope and other powers to get those lousy bubbles out of the white wine. Then the members of the Royal Court at Versailles under Louis XIV began to appreciate the bubbles. So, after years of fruitless labor trying to get the bubbles out of the wine, at the end of the seventeenth century, Dom was ordered to reverse his efforts and devise methods to increase the bubbling in the wine, which, incidentally, he did. After history, we have a chapter on making Champagne: pretty standard stuff. But if you don't know it yet, learn it here so at the next dinner you can talk with authority. Next comes the most informative chapter: A Flute or Goblet? Which is better? Those of you who know Champagne know the answer. And those of you who don't know Champagne can find the correct answer here. The amazing thing for me is that I knew the answer, but I didn't understand the scientific reasons why flute was better. Science is always right and here we find no exception. The last few chapters then talk in extenso about bubbles and as this is the essence of Chamapgne, the discussion is well worth the effort expended in studying the science of Champagne bubbles and the photographs that illustrate that science. Just as a book has a beginning, a middle, and an end, a bubble has a birth, a rise, and a burst. This book didn't make me want to go out an read more about Champagne, but it did make me want to go out and drink some more and while drinking I shall appreciate the remarkable history and science that goes into this fine drink.

5 out of 5 stars Illustrated history of a champagne bubble.......2005-01-24

Uncorked : the science of champagne or how all to learn on this festive and sparkling beverage so much appreciated throughout the world?

In a very pleasant prose to read, the author : Gerard Liger-Belair, an associate professor in Physical Sciences at the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne and consultant for the research department of Moet & Chandon, describes elegantly and for the first time the fragile and transitory life of a champagne bubble from its birth to its burst on the surface. Furthermore superb and fascinating black and white photographs permit to visualize what the naked eye cannot perceive like the formation of geometrical structures in the shape of flowers or dynamics of the bubbles such galaxies at the liquid surface. This book is a real concentrate of knowledge combining with brilliance history, science and art. Here is a physicist in love with bubbles and phenomenon of effervescence which makes the dynamics of fluids attractive! I think that Uncorked is a remarkable tool for popularisation, accessible to the greatest number and Gerard Liger-Belair, a professor that any student would dream to have. Never again you will look at a champagne flute in the same way!

A lover of champagne

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wine Uncorked de-mystifies the wine tasting process.......2006-01-30

With less than 150 glossy, spacious, generously illustrated, 8 1/2" by 11" pages, Wine Uncorked is no tomb. On the other hand, it's no sappy coffee table pictorial either. It's a useful wine digest, with emphasis on tasting, in a very visually stimulating presentation.

What really sets this book apart from the others is it's unique approach to understanding the complexities of wine tasting. A taster's toolbox, if you will, without the wine speak or wine geek. Fiona Beckett has a real flair for relating the complex flavors and aromas in each varietal into common sensory experiences. She uses tables and visual elements, such as tasting wheels, and her own extensive knowledge to break down an intimidating process in a practical way. The colorful tasting wheels categorically illustrate the full spectrum of flavors and aromas found in wine. A specific aroma like Yeast, bread or biscuits fall in the nutty category and are typical of champagne while toast, in the same category is indicative of wood finished chardonnay. The flavor wheels help in understanding the relationship between specific components and how they relate to each other and are manifested in certain red and white varieties. Ms Beckett lays the foundation then explores the more subtle influences such as soil, climate, the effect of wood and fermentation. She goes on to explain these attributes from a regional perspective. Why is pinot noir from Burgundy different than pinot noir from California or Washington or Oregon?

Although the book deals with wine appreciation in depth, ancillary subjects are generally brief. It's Light and entertaining providing an overview of most every aspect of wine without being overbearing. A great primer on wine but comprehensive, it has a lot to offer the wine expert as well.

I found this book extremely helpful in understanding some my own peculiar tasting sensations. Sometimes a personally familiar aroma or taste can lead you to a better descriptor. Wine uncorked helped me make sense of the scents. Bubble gum and shoe polish really are legitimate scents after all. It turns out they are reminiscent of pear and wood. This book is nicely bound and beautifully illustrated so it makes a nice gift, but be sure to keep one for yourself. I'm on my third copy.

3 out of 5 stars Good wine book for your coffee table, but not for beginners.......1999-12-22

This book is packed with beautiful pictures and some good information on wines. If you want to learn more about wines, this book is beneficial if you're already at an intermediate level of wine knowledge; if you're a wine novice who wants to learn the basics and how to taste wines, this is NOT THE BEST book to get.

Pros on the book: Stylish, beautiful pictures. The author offers a tasting wheel, which displays the various flavors that you should taste for the respective wine varieties.

Cons on the book: A little disorganized; not detailed enough; does not go through the basics.

Overall: Big on style, a bit boring to read. Good for those with intermediate wine knowledge. Looks great on coffee table.

I have visited numerous book stores in an attempt to find a wine book that is easy to read and would provide me with the knowledge that I felt I needed to sound like a wine expert. I found it in Cataldo Uncorked: All You Really Need to Know About Wine to be "Pretentious" as well as "Obnoxious" and More.
I am now equally comfortable when ordering a bottle of wine in a restaurant or purchasing a bottle in a wine store. Also I can now describe the wine in terms that get the attention of people who are wine-savvy.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Easy to Read.......2003-01-11

I bought this book because I new virtually nothing about choosing wine. I loved it because I found everything I needed to know quickly and easily - from how to order wine in a restaurant to speaking confidently about wine in conversations or at wine tastings. It includes a glossary and samples of wine descriptions, as well as suggestions on which wines to serve with which food. This is an excellent choice for anyone looking to increase their knowledge of wine.

    1 out of 5 stars A vapid adornment for one's coffee table.......2007-08-20

This book is a classic example of an essentially useless, overly fru fru, and largely vapid book that's suitable for adorning one's coffee table, but not much else. I own, and have reviewed (on various sites), a fairly substantial number of culinary books, and this one falls firmly in the bottom 10%, with regards to substance and usefulness.

Weighing in at a paltry 128 pages, most of it the result of gratuitously large fonts, wasted white space, and pictures of wine, this lightweight offering gives readers a brief and mildly diverting overview of basic champagne terminology (none of it in depth), and then goes on to offer some breezy comments on how the authoress designs menus for parties and pairs them with assorted sparkling wines.

Also included, almost as an after thought, is a small section of recipes by various 'celebrity' chefs (a few of them recognizeable, mostly not) in which champagne is supposedly the star player, but when examined more closely, are just run of the mill nouveaux recipes that can all be made with a dry bright white wine ... in short, most of them only include champagne in the recipe for the sake of including champagne in the name of the recipe - which in turn enables them to charge more for the dish when listing it on a menu by virtue of making it sound somehow more exciting and expensive.

BOTTOM LINE: If you're a doctor or dentist who routinely keeps long lines of fidgeting patients waiting in your lobby, go ahead and buy this book. If you're a homeowner who's desperate for something to decorate your coffee table, my advice is to avoid this book and pick up a nice candy dish instead from a nearby yard sale - you'll get more use out of it, because this is the sort of book you'll only read once, in a single sitting, and then scratch your head looking for ways to get rid of it by giving it to someone else (while trying not to appear as vapid and insubstantial as the book itself, in the process).

    Not recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A great present for your wine-drinking friends.......2000-10-27

What a fun book! This handy guide to the ins and outs of Champagne is a must for anyone throwing a Champagne tasting, or having a party where they want to talk about this drink of celebrations.

First, the book is a pleasure to read. The lovely hand-drawn photos of grapes in baskets and vineyards go well with the calligraphy in the background. This is something to read by a window overlooking a garden, with of course a glass of Champagne in hand.

Ms. Zraly is well versed in her subject. She worked with the various Champagne firms for over twelve years, and it shows. She first goes through the history of Champagne, explains how only wines from Champagne France should be given that name, and goes through how the 35,000 hectares of land are strictly watched over.

The grapes in Champagne are typically Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. The book goes through vintages, cuvees, and other terms. It lists the typical progress of a Champagne vineyard month by month. There are vintage charts, label reading instructions, fun quotes. And then there's more!

A series of delicious Champagne recipes help you further enjoy this fine bubbly, from the Champagne Lady's own files, from the owner of Spago, and many other luminaries. The book goes on to give party suggestions - how to plan a brunch, a cocktail party, a baby shower, you name it. It describes how to open Chamagne, and how it should be opened for you in a restaurant. There is even information on which houses make the most Champagne and what to do with the empty bottles!

A fine reference source and fun read for anyone interested Champagne - the sparkling wine that is present at most celebrations around the world.

Everyone has seen David Hyde Pierce on the popular TV series Frasier where he plays the brother Niles.

Well what most of us did not know is that both Niles and David in real life are wine Geeks. David is very knowledgeable about wine, has a keen pallet and loves to talk about wine. He does it so well in this naration about Sonoma wine country and the wineries and the wines.

Living in Sonoma, I have many relatives and guests back East who want to come out and visit the wineries. Before they come, I always loan them a copy of Sonoma Uncorked so they can prepare their itinerary and at the same time get in the mood for their visit. If you have a CD player in your car, you can listen to David's soothing and melodic voice give you all the inside tips you may need in visiting Sonoma. He gives a lot of good history, gossip and trivia that makes a Sonoma visitor feel more at home and gain the most from California's best wine country!.
