This is the best book I've read about moderate drinking and how to get there.
Most of the time I don't have a problem with alcohol but sometimes it takes
over and I drink too much. I have found the suggestions in this book invaluable,
especially pre-planning my drinking behavior with the tips in the program,
eating while I'm drinking and watching the clock to slow down my drinking.
That's just for starters. Cornett gives lots of tips and also works on your
attitude about alcohol and its importance in your life.
I think this book could change the world and have given it to friends who
drink too much.

Problem Drinker or Alcoholic? It Doesn't Matter!.......2006-07-04
I don't know if I was a problem drinker or alcoholic. I don't care - I'm not into labels. But I do know I wanted to drink less and become less dependent on alcohol. And 7 Weeks helped me. One message in the book is you've got to take responsibility for your drinking instead of chalking it up to genes or a bad childhood or whatever. Another message is you can change if you want to. And Cornett gives concrete tips to cut down.
Who care if you're a "problem drinker" or "alcoholic"? If you want to drink less and have a healthier relationship with alcohol, 7 Weeks is for you. I'd pay twice the price for this book if I had to do it all over again.
A Winner for Anyone Questioning Their Drinking.......2005-11-30
This book has been a lifesaver for me. For years I enjoyed social drinking without problems, but the last couple of years I've questioned if I was drinking too much. This program showed me how to pace my drinking, how to make a drinking plan in advance before I started drinking(which really worked)and how to stick to my limit fairly easily. It also made alcohol less important to me - a huge step in the right direction to get back on the healthy social drinking path again. I recommend this book to anyone questioning their drinking. It's a straightforward approach to drink less and drink appropriately.

I wish I had discovered this book 10 years ago. It spelled out how to achieve moderate drinking. It was easy to follow and best of all it worked for me! There are only a few books out that cover the subject of changing drinking behavior. One is filled with stats, boring and hard for me to stay interested in. Another one was too general - no specifics to help me manage drinking. 7 Weeks held my interest and gave specific tips to keep alcohol consumption down and to beat problem drinking.

This Book Cuts Alcohol Cravings Without Prescriptions!.......2007-07-31
I am so happy I came across this book at amazon. It's the only book I've
found that talks about how other alternative medicines and other cultures
view alcohol abuse and how to treat it. I was thinking about getting
prescription medication to cut the desire to drink but after reading this
I don't need to. There are lots of herbs to do that at the natural food
store. I've read Cornett's other book, 7 Weeks to Safe Social Drinking:
How to Effectively Moderate Your Alcohol Intake, and she always covers
interesting things.
For me the vitamin and supplement part was the best. It talks about things
you can buy over the counter to cut craving. The Chinese and Ayurveda
medicine parts were really interesting too.
I realize this is only one take on problem drinking. But if you take these
suggestions in the book, along with her program in her other book to
improve your drinking habits you can cut craving and consumption without
prescription medicine.
Brilliant! Why hasn't anyone written about this before?.......2006-07-21
I'm a drinker who has struggled on and off with booze for years and I'm ecstatic someone has finally written about a more organic approach to problem drinking. This book gave me a different perspective. I was especially interested in how chinese and ayurvedic medicine treat drinkers and the concept of "balancing" my life so booze becomes less important and I drink less.
This book opened my mind up. I guess no ones written about alternative medicine to address alcohol abuse because the disease concept and AA are so deeply ingrained in the US.

I got this book to build up my collection of drink books in the quest to be the best bartender ever!!! And the drinks are great and each one is designated to some occasion whether it be something really silly or the perfect drink for your 25th anniversary. I loved this book just to flip through and giggle at some of the pairs.
A pretty cool book for mixology fanciers.......2006-12-21
If you're the type of person who orders something different every time you go out, you'll like this. In fact, you'll probably like it even if you tend more towards simply getting a beer every time (like me).
There's some unusual drinks in here, along with some interesting combinations of occasion and beverage. Recommended choices range from the mundane (a dollar draft when you've got a buck and change in your pocket) to the historical (a rum flip during the Revolutionary War) to the utterly odd (the Bullshooter, a hangover remedy involving vodka and beef broth). Situations listed include holidays, life events, people you want to impress, and massive hangovers. The writing is quite amusing and even includes information on what not to drink in a specific situation.

If you're looking for a good, general selection of drinks and cocktails from which to start your home bar -- and be thoroughly entertained in the bargain -- your search is over! You'll find expert mixology for some standard drinks, along with some little known or forgotten cocktails throughout 2oth Century history, up to a few of the latest, trendy drinks. Sprinkled with historical and cultural references, notable quotes, and just plain fun stuff, you'll enjoy more than a few laughs even before you start sampling recipes! The language is sometimes "R-rated", so the easily offended should step lightly.
The recipes in this book are not categorized alphabetically, but by "When You're In The Mood For...", "Special Occasions", "Drinks For Life Events", etc., which makes it supremely useful. There is an alphabetical index, plus an index by main spirit ingredient.
I laughed out loud at several spots; by far the most hilarious and entertaining mixology book I've ever encountered!

Like a good wine, withstands the test of time.......2003-05-13
I bought this book back in the early 70s. During that decade I read it repeatedly (and it shows), made mead and wine based on its loose instructions, and unwittingly expanded my worldview thanks to its digressions into mythology and epic poetry. Thirty years later, I dared to brew beer using a kit (a 2002 Christmas gift from a well-meaning niece), and the result was barely potable. I pulled this book from the book archives, made my first batch according to Adams, and never returned to the kit.
Times have changed since the writing of 'An Essay.' Mead is now relatively available, the law prohibiting homebrewed beer was reversed in 1978, brewing supply shops abound, and wine shops are many. Still, Adams instructs us -- no doubt as he did his students in the great state of Washington -- in the general concepts of making a fairly good beer inexpensively, producing an ancient drink that still gladdens the heart (and produces a nasty hangover), home-distilling substances that the government still frowns upon, and producing a good wine from those local fruits.
I wonder if Adams ever considered a "How to Make Booze Revisited."

A true treasure from an era gone bye. Excellent for the reader with a desire to embark on the journey of homebrewing without the snobbish, elitest, cynicism usually found in do it yourself, how to books. Also, excellent for the reader that posesses true curiosity and a love for "reader friendly" words. A quick read that provides both laughter and actual instruction with pinch of back to the earth philosophy.

I can't remember where I got my copy, it was at my bedside for years and every couple months I would read (or re-read) a chapter or two. One day, my wife sold it at a garage sale for 10 cents. I decided not to divorce her because of the children.

This book is not so much a technical manual as a philosophical treatise on mans' quest for the molecule extraordinaire- ethanol, aka alcohol, aka "the real stuff". It will get you in the right frame of mind to give you the confidence to attempt home-brewing without feeling that you have to be a Chemistry major first. (I am not willing to sell my copy, so try Amazon's Used Book Finder!)

According to the actor Peter Cushing's introduction to this scrapbook on Sherlock Holmes, 'you cannot have too much of a good thing'. Even by the early 1970s, when this book was first produced (as a look back over the previous 50 years of coverage of Sherlock Holmes, since the publication of the last of the official stories), there were literally hundreds of books available, and editions, articles, films, plays, radio and television shows, and more too numerous to count.
Haining does not intend to be exhaustive by any means, but rather, by means of this scrapbook, to introduce fans of Holmes, newcomers and aficionados alike, to the wide range of possibilities within the Holmesian arena. That Peter Cushing penned the introduction is a good example -- Cushing portrayed Holmes in character, as well as being an expert in Holmesian lore himself.
Sherlock Holmes is one of the best known detectives in the world -- so famous in fact, that 221B Baker Street in London continues to get mail adddressed to this fictional character almost a century after he would have died had he been a real person. There are groups of people -- Sherlockians and Holmesians, the distinction between which is rather subtle -- who delight in retelling the tales. The official canon is 60 stories -- 56 short stories, and 4 novels, published at various times during Conan Doyle's life. However, Conan Doyle wrote far more than he ever published as part of the official canon, and some relates directly to Holmes; other pieces remain controversial with regard to their applicability.
Holmes has appeared virtually everywhere. Haining reprints copies of cigarette cards with Holmesian characters, playbills, advertisements, 'Strand' drawings, diagrams of rooms, routes, and maps. He includes photographs of significant figures, including major actors to play Holmes (Rathbone, Norwood, Gillette, etc.) and Watson (Bruce, etc.), as well as Conan Doyle himself. One of the recurring features in the book is a series of letters, some to editors in newspapers, some to Holmes himself - this includes a mock obituary that might have appeared in The Times of London, had Holmes been a 'real' person.
There are plaques in London, just as real historical figures have, commemorating not only the location of where 221B Baker Street was (or would have been), but also plaques erected commemorating Watson's first meeting with Holmes, and even Watson's meeting with Stamford, who introduced the pair to each other. There are cartoons, film stills, play photos, a recreation of Holmes' Baker Street flat, and more. The wide range of Holmesian lore beyond Conan Doyle far exceeded Conan Doyle's own output by millions, in currency and in printed pages.
This relatively brief collection is a great addition to any Sherlockian or Holmesian library.
