Book Description

UPDATED, WITH NEW MATERIAL BY THE AUTHOR"WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES isn't just another book. It is a gift of profound insight, wisdom, and love. An oracle from one who knows."--Alice WalkerWithin every woman there lives a powerful force, filled with good instincts, passionate creativity, and ageless knowing. She is the Wild Woman, who represents the instinctual nature of women. But she is an endangered species. In WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES, Dr. Estés unfolds rich intercultural myths, fairy tales, and stories, many from her own family, in order to help women reconnect with the fierce, healthy, visionary attributes of this instinctual nature. Through the stories and commentaries in this remarkable book, we retrieve, examine, love, and understand the Wild Woman and hold her against our deep psyches as one who is both magic and medicine. Dr. Estés has created a new lexicon for describing the female psyche. Fertile and life-giving, it is a psychology of women in the truest sense, a knowing of the soul."This volume reminds us that we are nature for all our sophistication, that we are still wild, and the recovery of that vitality will itself set us right in the world."--Thomas Moore Author of Care of the Soul"I am grateful to WOMEN WHO RUN WITH THE WOLVES and to Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estés. The work shows the reader how glorious it is to be daring, to be caring, and to be women. Everyone who can read should read this book."--Maya Angelou"An inspiring book, the 'vitamins for the soul' [for] women who are cut off from their intuitive nature."--San Francisco Chronicle"Stands out from the pack . . . A joy and sparkle in [the] prose . . . This book will become a bible for women interested in doing deep work. . . . It is a road map of all the pitfalls, those familiar and those horrifically unexpected, that a woman encounters on the way back to her instinctual self. Wolves . . . is a gift."--Los Angeles Times"A mesmerizing voice . . . Dramatic storytelling she learned at the knees of her [immigrant] aunts."--Newsweek

5 out of 5 stars CP Estes: Women Who Run With Wolves.......2007-05-20

This is prolly the best book I have ever read. Brings me to tears, has me laughing, and everything in between. VERY good for women and men, as what she touches on relates to both sexes, although she focuses on women. Excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars A book that should resurface again and again as great feminist lit.......2007-05-11

Each time I move and pare down my bookshelves, I immediately set aside as untouchable those books without which my personal library would be less rich. "Women Who Run with the Wolves" is one such book. I pick it up in good times and bad ones, and I'm always grateful for the experience.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book - my favorite author. .......2007-04-16

I first read this book 10 years ago with a group of women who met weekly, and I continue to refer to it often as a reminder of the insights that are recounted so well through the amazing storytelling talents of Clarissa Pinkola Estes. She has a way of speaking directly to my soul through her words and thoughtful analysis. A beautiful, life changing book!

Book Description

New enhanced edition of the original underground classic by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Ph.D., features rare interview excerpts with this internationally acclaimed Jungian analyst and cantadora (keeper of the old stories). First released three years before the print edition of Women Who Run With the Wolves (Ballantine books, 1997) made publishing history (more than 2 million copies sold worldwide), this landmark audio probes the instinctual nature of women through world myths, folktales, and commentary. Through an exploration into the nature of the wild woman archetype, Dr. Estés helps listeners discover and reclaim their passion, creativity, and power.

5 out of 5 stars For the journey.......2007-09-03

I really enjoyed listening to this while on a road trip. It will keep coming back to you in small ways. Now I am reading her other stories. Just what we need in this world today!

A total waste of time and money.

5 out of 5 stars It's a great CD.......2007-03-31

It's a very good CD based on a great book. I can listen to this information over again and it does not make me bored. It's very easy to listen and understand. It's very positive and deep, it helped me in times of stress and depression. It gives hope and brightens life. I recommended it to my friends, and when I told them some information from that CD/book, they were interested and fascinated by the stories...

5 out of 5 stars Thriving not just Surviving.......2007-02-07

Clarissa Pinkola Estes has a warm vibrant personality. As she explores beautiful myths and folktales, you can sink into the beautiful space of childhood dreams and wonder. Her voice is soothing and comforting and her main message seems to be the uncovering of the feminine archetype that brings creativity and nourishment to a woman's life.

At times I have thought that until you have used the idea of "bones" in a poem, you have not reached into the depths of yourself and found that essential element that births you as a poet. This almost represents an indestructible part of yourself and Clarissa Pinkola Estes brings a new understanding to the idea of "bones" used in mythology.

The Mistaken Zygote idea seems more like the "story of the stork" and doesn't seem to explain why you may find yourself in a family where you feel out of place or never at home. A few teachers who focus on archetypes seem to think that you are placed in family of your choosing. So, both ideas are ways to explain what we can't possibly know. I think that "feeling different or like you came from a different planet" has more to do with a conflict of personality or the difference between being an introvert or extrovert. Since most people seem to be extroverts, introverts can sometimes feel out of place or different.

Some of the topics include:

The Story of La Loba
The Soul's Need for Expression
Women's Intuition
Tips for Reconnecting to Your Instinctual Nature
The Importance of Feelings
Rhythm and Relationship
Rage and Release
Forgiveness

Clarrisa Pinkola Estes discusses how it is possible to channel lust into poetry, gardening or other creative endeavors. For women who feel they have been "over domesticated" or restricted in younger life, she gives ideas for breaking free from other people's restrictive ideas. This is not done without much consideration (and also includes releasing the rage you feel) and this is not an encouragement to be rebellious or destructive. Instead, this idea is more to nurture the inner wildness of a woman that breaks her free into her deepest life expression and most fulfilling creative path.

The mysterious stories, memories from childhood and advice about how to enhance creativity felt very true, honest and encouraging. The message is one of nurturing your soul and being patient with yourself so you can flower and your heart can open so you can bless the world. I had to smile when Clarissa says she is friendly, but not totally tamed. If you know the wild beauty of being able to express your inner creativity or you want to experience this freedom, this CD set can encourage a renewal of your life purpose.

This is an enhanced CD with poems, two stories from Theatre of the Imagination, a text interview and a video clip.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......but still buy the book.......2003-04-20

Every story a woman ever needed to hear is there. You will be swept up by the warm, rich quality of Dr. Estes' voice. Her analysis of the stories clean the windows of your mind and give you fresh tools to unlock gates and open the windows to your soul. This is one though that you still want to have in print!

4 out of 5 stars Not As Good As the Book but Worthwhile Nonetheless.......2000-07-12

Although this audio cassette claims to be abridged, which it is, it also contains information not printed in the book, which to me seems odd. This is the only reason I retain both book and audio cassette.

Theatre of the Imagination (Volumes I and II), to which I give 5 stars, gives fuller treatment to the stories.

      5 out of 5 stars Not one-sided.......1999-12-16

I just want to say that this material is as valuable for the male as it is for the female. Just as the stories are timeless and archetypal, so are the messages contained within. I'd recommend WWRWW to anyone interested in inner work and understanding, and also the Theatre of the Imagination (two volumes) audio series, which doesn't suffer from the perception that it is for women (only).

5 out of 5 stars A must for every woman who feels that she should "LIVE".......1999-09-24

This is no miracle medicine book for an overnight turn over to a new you.... This book is certainly not prescribed for a person who does not have the courage to look with in. But for the woman no matter what she is, a house wife, a professional or an executive, as long as she accepts that she wants to be the woman the lord created her as and stop living the way soceity/ circumstances / culture dictates, this book is a friend who will wisper in your ear each time where to turn and where to look.

I would not appreciate this book being used to be displayed on a book shelf as an indication of so called intellectual reading. It is not. This book is for every woman who likes to listen to tales, to think about these tales and to learn from these tales. Read it and ask your self, why is that so. Open the minds doors, stray into those corridors where you never wanted to go, never had the time/ inclination to go...... and you will in time, after reading/ rereading will find the graceful, fully alive, intutitive wolf woman with in. and she is the best friend you could have for the rest of your life..... and if you really love your daughter, show her the path.

The womankind should thank Clarissa for this book.

Sophia Loren is more than a beloved movie star--she's a cook. The author of two personal cookbooks, she's been recognized by the Italian government for her culinary prowess. In Sophia Loren's Recipes & Memories, she offers a hundred or so recipes arranged by course--antipasti through desserts. With a like number of photos, most in color, and all sorts of Sophia memorabilia--a shot of the 16-year-old Sophia shows us just how early Sophia was Sophia--the large-format book is also filled with reminiscences of family, home, and work. Cooks shouldn't be disappointed, though. Sophia's recipes, taken from all over Italy as well as her table, include pizzas and risottos, hearty soups, savory fish dishes, and simple but satisfying sweets. The repertoire is basic but tempting; Sophia's Saltimbocca, for example, is the familiar dish yet again, but there are a few original and "undiscovered" dishes, such as Eggplant Cooked in the Manner of Mushrooms. Standout dishes include a lovely herb-perfumed lamb stew from Naples and a sweet-savory rice dish made with turkey, chestnuts, and dried fruit. The recipes are models of clarity, and Sophia's introductory notes and other asides leave no doubt that the author is a serious, passionate cook. Reading her book and trying her recipes, we come to applaud the star in her apron as well as on the screen. --Arthur Boehm

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful simple Italian recipes!.......2006-03-16

When I was in my early twenties I enjoyed cooking Italian dishes with my grandmother every Tuesday. My grandmother is a true Italian woman, raised in New York and believes a family should eat a homemade meal every night. She gave me this book as she thought it was a suberb Italian cookbook. I couldn't agree more. As a young person, this is a great book because the receipes are not too comlicated, as common Italian dishes and taste delicious! Almost every recipe has a color photo too. My favorite recipes in the book are: Bucatini alla Carbonara, Spaghetti al Limone and the lentil soup.

"Sophia Loren's Recipes & Memories" is a book to be treasured, read and re-read, for its charming insight into the life and times of one of the world's great actresses, and for its wonderful, traditional Italian recipes, laced with more than a little spice-of-life.

Buy two of them! One for you to savor, one for a special gift for a favorite person in your life. I read this photo-filled book cover-to-cover the minute it arrived, and then enthusiastically ordered a second copy for my favorite cook, my son, the pastry chef. The first sentence in this memoir is "According to an old adage, the best condiment for any food is hunger." This book will make you passionately hungry for the best of Italian cooking, and it will inform you in the lovliest way possible, about old-world Italian kitchen traditions, not to mention a fascinating vision of Ms. Loren's life in film.

5 out of 5 stars BookIdeas.com Book Reviewer Marie Jones says:.......2005-03-07

More than just a collection of family recipes, "Sophia Loren's Recipes and Memories" is a sumptuous and often intimate journey into the life of one of the world's classiest and most admired and loved movie stars. The 100 traditional and improvised recipes are accompanied by insightful anecdotes about the movie business, acting, family life, the art of cooking, and growing up in her home country of Italy, with gorgeous photographs that bring Ms. Loren's passion for her past, and her present, to glorious life.

With such a legendary acting career to her credit, Ms. Loren has met and worked with many of the greats in the business, and she talks about her behind-the-scenes experiences, peppered throughout the book in between the real highlights, the recipes themselves. Many come from long-standing family traditions passed down from generation to generation, but many are also more modern, improvised takes on Italian dishes that Ms. Loren discovered on various locations of her many movies, or created herself from her vast knowledge of the culinary arts (this is not her first cookbook!).

The photographs by Alison Harris chronicle the evolution of both Ms. Loren's long and illustrious career, and her home life in Italy and abroad, with lush and colorful glimpses into a life centered around the pleasures of home and the family kitchen, as well as behind the camera. That Ms. Loren loves food is obvious in this beautiful, coffee-table style cookbook. That she loves life is even more so.

5 out of 5 stars simple recipes emotional depth.......2005-01-19

I love cooking the recipes in this book because they require few ingredients and cook with little preparation. The rustic simplicity of these recipes resonates very well with her childhood and adolescent memories. You get the feeling that the poverty that she endured in her youth has now tempered to only warm memories with time, but you can still read the hunger and deprivation between the lines. She is so gracious! You really feel as if she is handing you her family recipes. I was never a big fan of hers(too young to enjoy her movies) but I appreciate her so much more--she reveals so much if you read between the lines. One of my favorite recipes is spaghetti with lemon. I didn't have any cream so I used butter instead. Came out great. Took absolutely no time to prepare.

5 out of 5 stars Great Authentic Italian Meals!.......2003-08-27

As an Italian-born woman I found the receipes in this cookbook to actually be very authentically Italian and delicious. Not sure I buy the fact that Loren makes these dishes, but whoever cooked them up did a great job! Buon Appetito!
