    Book Description

This conclusion to the Ormingat Trilogy brings together past events and people who share an understanding of the mystery of Ormingat. The story begins with a tragedy averted. How will it end? Who goes home?

Like Patrick in Space Race and Matthew and Alison in Earthborn, Steven is a visitor from the planet Ormingat, sent to live temporarily on Earth with a human family. When his earthly son Jacob is born with a fatal immune deficiency, however, Steven cannot watch his son die, and calls upon his secret extraterrestrial connections to save the boy. With the help of a protective shield from Ormingat, Jacob does survive, but he grows up secluded, frustrated, and without friends. When Steven is forced to tell Jacob of his identity and involve him in his work, Jacob resents the intrusion of this alien world. Jacob never asked for more than a normal human life, yet it’s the one thing Steven can never give him.

Meanwhile, the activities of other Ormingatriga are drawing undesired publicity and the danger of detection. Steven is summoned back to Ormingat, but how can he abandon his earth family?

Yum. Just finished another recipe - this time 'Macaroni and Cheese for People Who Love Onions'. The flavors of the Cheshire and Sharp Cheddar cheeses mixed together were tremendous. It's quick to cook for a weekday night, too.

Another great recipe from this book is 'Yankee Doodle Dandy Baked Macaroni and Cheese'. My guests loved it for July 4th.

This book also provides readers with information about the many types of cheeses found in different parts of the world. The author invents many recipes from her travels and the little stories at the top of each recipe are enlightening.

This is good cookbook for teenagers and/or beginning cooks.

5 out of 5 stars Makes Mac and Cheese Something Special.......2006-12-28

Here's a book to enjoy in the winter months. Actually I never was a fan of the packaged mac and cheese with the powdered day-glo orange cheese. So this book had to go some way to win me over. It did.

The author's love of this food comes through on every page. She is enthusiastic without being cloying (well, maybe a little cloying), and it's apparent that her recipes have actually been tested in a home kitchen. The book is well illustrated with color pictures of about every third recipe.

The recipes should satisfy the most discriminating home cooks, without being intimidating for novices. This is real food, not just something to donate to a pot-luck dinner. Recipes range from "Macaroni with Moroccan-spiced Butter and Shredded Goat Cheese" to "Trinadadian Macaroni Pie." Even the old familiar dishes are made special. The first recipe my wife and I tried was the old stand-by "Tuna Noodle Casserole," which the author made special with the addition of porcini mushrooms and a mushroom bechemel sauce. Absolutely delicious!

If you like pasta and cheese and enjoy coooking, this cookbook is for you.

                      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful cookbook!.......2007-01-14

I actually bought this cookbook for my new daughter-in-law. I have had one myself for years and it is my favorite of all my cookbooks. I have given it as a gift to several other friends over the years as well. It has recipes that are easy to follow, made from ingredients I have in my kitchen, and the results are the kinds of dishes my family loves. I highly recommend it if you are looking for down-to-earth recipes for family favorites!

5 out of 5 stars The Pantry Friendliest Family Cookbook Out There.......2006-06-04

This collection of recipes, assembled by the MOPS (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers) from it's member's best-loved recipes was an answer to prayer for me! I found this little book after a long, frustrating and almost fruitless search for a family-oriented cookbook that didn't send me to the grocery store every time I opened it. My family has liked everything I have tried from this cookbook, it's all been ultra-easy to make, and the shopping is a breeze. The book is also full of little anecdotes, hints, suggestions, tips, and get-the-kids-in-the-kitchen activities which make this book a delight to read.

But this review isn't without it's criticisms--I must say that one of my fellow reviewers is right--it does have quite a bit of butter in it, and admittedly, it's got its share of canned biscuits recipes (but boy, they are soooooo good!) but not enough to dismiss it outright by any means. After reading and reveiwing scores of "family" cookbooks, I found that for your family's menu, you really can't get it all in one cookbook--sometimes you're going to want to fall into the First Rule of Really Really Good Food and make a real crowd pleaser. (What's the First Rule of Really Really Good Food? You know it: The More Fat It Has In It The Better It Taste, n'est pas?) And of course, a lot of the time you're going to need help making it healthier, and then in some cases, there's the budget to consider.

So with that in mind, don't expect this little book that's written primarily for quick and easy eats to have it all. If you need food that's healthy, I recommend Better Homes and Garden's Kid Favorites Made Healthy. But for myself, I find that sometimes I do want to spoil my family and make something easy and quick. I also want to watch my budget--which is why I'm happy using a combination of books, and this is just one of several. But it is a really good one and will broaden your menu without tiring you out.

Keeping that glowing recommendation in mind, I will say I was frustrated by the lack of pictures and hope that subsequent editions have at least a few photographs or illustrations. I had a hard time imagining what the Buffet Eggs looked like, and the same goes for Crunchy Chicken Rolls (which are really good, btw).

They also add some asides about food and how it relates to family, my favorite being "Create a few familiar standard menus for your family. Don't feel guilty about preparing the same two or three dishes together. You're actually creating memories of comfort foods for your children. We all have favorite memories of menus or foods that bring a sense of consistency and contiunity to our busy lives."

Wise words, and a wise buy; so feel confident in buying this little volume of ultimately useful recipes! You won't regret it.

As for the other books I use, (just in case you're curious) see my Listmania list for Family Eats.

I thought this book was a good help in coming up with different ideas for dinner. I think it is geared for older kids though.
If you are stuck in same rut of chicken, noodles and canned green beans this book will help out!

                      5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2005-08-14

This is a great book! I have *thee* fussiest 2 year-old eater on the planet. We've had an occupational therapist and a nutritionist working with us on my daughter's eating for close to a year. When she finally started eating, I got this book so I could try new things for her. Tonight I made the Chicken and Stuffing recipe which was very easy to make (and inexpensive), but it looked so complicated on my daughter's plate I said, "She'll never eat it.." But tonight was the very first night she nearly cleaned her plate! My husband and I kept saying, "Slow down." I have tried a few of the recipes from this book, and my husband says the reason my daughter likes them is because they are flavorful. So many kiddy cookbooks are lacking in flavor, which is very important to my daughter.

                      And we like them too!

The definite pros of this cookbook are:

                      1) the ingredients are easy to find - most of them are probably already in your kitchen.
                      2) it's very practical!
                      3) the recipes share a lot of common ingredients and they're inexpensive, so you don't end up spending a fortune at the grocery store.
                      4) the recipes are EASY (almost impossible to mess up) and very convenient for the busy mom or dad.
                      5) they are flavorful!

Also, the book is filled with little suggestions and stories, which I find annoying in some books, but I found extremely clever, helpful and endearing in this book. A lot of writers try writing their cookbooks in that familiar "passing on recipes from a friend to a friend" format, which usually feels very contrived to me. I thought this book, however, succeeded in doing that.

I've had my fair share of disappointments with cookbooks, but not with this one. I borrowed this from the library but I'll definitely be buying it. This is a GREAT book which I highly recommend for busy moms and dads who don't want to feed their children the same old recipes all the time and won't do fast food.

Macaroni and cheese is the ultimate, all-American comfort food. Most Americans, especially children, are familiar with the version that comes out of the blue cardboard box, but acclaimed cookbook author Joan Schwartz has something to say about that in her collection Macaroni & Cheese. Schwartz has compiled over 50 original and inventive recipes from many well-known chefs and restaurants. Most of the recipes start off with a basic béchamel sauce (milk whisked into a roux) and add various domestic and foreign cheeses to the hot mixture, but some find room for more exotic ingredients, like truffles, duck prosciutto, oysters, sausage, and codfish. In addition, there's a glossary of almost 40 milk and goat cheese varieties that appear within the recipes. After sampling some of the more unusual recipes with such fascinating and complementary flavors, it will be time to put your standard assumptions about mac and cheese to rest, and put the blue box at the back of the pantry shelf. --Teresa Simanton

                      Book Description

Simple and perfect, macaroni and cheese is the ultimate comfort food, a classic dish that's reassuring and familiar, yet, with the addition of a bit of truffle oil or salsa, it kicks into high gear with an unexpected burst of flavor. Now, for the first time in one collection, dozens of well-known chefs, including Bobby Flay, Rocco DiSpirito, Charlie Palmer, David Burke, Matthew Kenney, Katy Sparks, and Rick Bayless, share favorite recipes, from both their childhood memories and their award-winning restaurants. Here are recipes for Macaroni with Wisconsin Asi-ago, Baked Four-Cheese Pasta, Penne with Roquefort, Macaroni and Cheese Croquettes, Green Chile Mac and Cheese, and Chunks of Lobster Swimming in Cheesy Macaroni. While the basic concept of pasta and cheese remains the same, each recipe has its own taste and personality, blending and balancing flavor, texture, and presentation for a bold Mac and Cheese experience.

Simple enough for the novice cook yet sophisticated enough to impress the experienced home chef, Macaroni and Cheese is a fun-filled cookbook that will be enjoyed for years to come.

I do not own this book yet, however, I checked it out from the library and I could not get enough of it. The worse thing about this book is deciding which mac and cheese recipe to make first.

Macaroni & cheese has been my favorite comfort food for forever, so I was thrilled to buy this book when it came out. I've made about 5 of the recipes (multiple times) and all but one have been fabulous. I wanted to make Rocco DiSpirito's croquettes (pages 74-75) as part of my Thanksgiving dinner for tomorrow, but I could never get the mixture to form into balls no matter what I did. I added egg to a test batch, more mayo, more sour cream, some flour. Nothing worked. If anyone can figure out how to get these things to stick together, please email me at martha@terracepartners.com. While you're at it, if you happen to have any recipes for those divine little cheese croquettes they sell all over the south of Spain, send those along, too.

4 out of 5 stars Mac & Cheese!?!? Not in the 'Blue Box' Anymore!!.......2003-04-26

Is there any food dish that is more American than Macaroni and Cheese? Many of us, myself included, grew up with the 'blue box' and as our tastes developed, so did our disdain for this dish. I tended to equate 'Mac & Cheese' with that meat product that comes in the blue can.

But Joan Schwartz has exploded the low-brow image of America's comfort food. This book is incredible! There are so many varieties of this dish from the 'classic' dishes to international flavors to what Ms. Schwartz calls 'Mac and Cheese Today'. And don't think that the cheese is that orange stuff. Swiss, Fontina, Mascarpone, Feta and Mozzarella are just a few of the varieties that you will use in your recipes. And just when you thought that the cheeses were a stretch, recipes with lobster, prosciutto, artichoke hearts, portabello and crimini mushrooms and chiles and chipotle peppers to mention a few, will delight your tastes.

I'll admit that I bought this book with a great deal of skepticism. A few bites of the 'Chunks of Lobster Swimming in Cheesy Macaroni' dispelled my reservations. Other favorites include 'Farfalle with Fontina, Tasso Ham and Baby Spinach' and Mac and Smoked Cheddar with Ham and Chipotles'. Imagine the look on guests' faces when you announce that you are serving them Mac and Cheese and their surprise when you serve a dish approaching haute cuisine.

Let's admit it...we liked the 'blue box' growing up and most of us are ashamed to reveal our love of this American staple. Now we can proudly bring this long demeaned dish back to the table and rekindle our fondness for it. Buy the book....it's a keeper!

                      5 out of 5 stars A mac and cheese lover's must-have!.......2002-11-01

Clearly written, with easy to follow instructions, and guide to ingredients, including definitions and sources. I love the 50's style art and kitchy-ness of this wonderful comfort food book. The recipes go from simple and basic to complex and gourmet. Even my husband loved this book so much, he followed a recipe and made a decent meal from scratch for the first time in his life.

I plan to attempt most of the recipes in this book.

I am giving this book five stars without having made a single recipe. As another reviewer pointed out, the 'Easy Recipe Finder' is an awesome way to browse through the recipes real quick to find a recipe to suit your needs or your fancy. If only all cookbooks were this handy to use! On top of that great list, there are comparisons of the baking techniques, cheese, pastas, spices, and toppings. This cookbook will be a handy reference for years to come!

4 out of 5 stars Do you Love Mac & Cheese?.......2006-04-09

I picked up this book because both of my kids love Macaroni & Cheese. I loved the section that talked about different pastas, cheese, and additions to "spice" up regular Mac & Cheese. It also gave 11 different baking styles to make this comfort food.

My kids especially loved the Mega Lasagna (a nice change of pace from regular lasagna), the Grilled Mac & Cheese Sandwhich, Baked Rigatoni, and the Cheesy Pasta.

If your kids like Macaroni and Cheese, and you feel like you will scream if you have to eat it one more time, give this book a try. Enjoy!

This book appeals to me on several levels: I teach elementary school students (computers), I like to collect cookbooks, and I love Mac & Cheese. It's hard to classify this book so I will just use one word: Fun! The initial section of the book called the Easy Recipe Finder is one of the clearest and most extensive that I have ever seen, but the kids will understand it too as it is done with graphics. Also of interest on pages 6 and 7 is a comparison of the eleven ways to cook Mac & Cheese in which level of difficulty, time, taste, texture, calories and tasting notes are listed. There are two additional `Comparison' sections that discuss a wide variety of cheeses and how to use them, and a section labeled, `What Goes On Top'.
The recipes? Creative, versatile and wonderfully illustrated. I mentioned the recipe for Mac & Cheese pizza on a usergroup and a nice lady from Virginia emailed me asking for the recipe since she couldn't afford the book, but thought that her two grandchildren would like it. I sent it to her and she replied that she was sure that it was going to be a hit!
My favorites? Too early to decide, but the Stuffed Baked Potatoes (did I say that I love potatoes too?) and the Baked Rigatoni are definitely 'keepers'. I haven't tried the pizza yet, but I think I'll wait to serve that to guests.
This is however, a children's book! It is replete with illustrations that will appeal to the kids. It also includes a picture of every recipe. This is a wonderful opportunity to involve children in making decisions and menu planning. Cooking is a tremendously powerful teaching/learning experience for young children and this book is a treasure trove of culinary delights. I showed it to our school librarian and she is going to purchase it for the cooking section. She is also buying a copy for her mother and for herself, as her kids like Mac & Cheese too!
If this review hasn't convinced you, you can get more information at maccheese.com. You can order shirts and hats etc. The authors and the publisher seem assured that this book is a hit...I wholeheartedly agree!

My nieces and nephews love mac & cheese, so I bought the book to surprise them with some new recipes. So far I've made 5 recipes and each one has been delicious. Now they argue over which mac and cheese I should make. They all have a different favorite. I'll probably surprise them by trying a new recipe each time they come over. The book is not only full of great recipes, it is charming to read. I especially appreciate the witty quotes and wonderful cartoons.

Andrew found out that going to school on a budget often "eats" into your grocery money, and as a result the quality of food prepared often declines in direct proportion to the money that is being re-allocated for other uses! As you can guess, macaroni and cheese became a big part of his university and single life. Andrew has spent the last ten years working for major cruise lines, as well as on mega-yachts, cruising all over the world, visiting exotic lands, and collecting interesting recipes. Most of the macaroni and cheese variations within this collection were collected from various people over time as a result of his travels.
