      Book Description

Interweaving scripture, paraphrase and garden imagery, Karla Dornacher writes and illustrates a beautiful botanical book of devotional thoughts that explore God's handiwork as the Master Gardener in the heart-gardens of His people. An ideal gift book for women who enjoy gardening or for any woman seeking to "grow, blossom and bear much fruit" in her walk with God.

I received this book for my Birthday and plan on buying several for gifts also. It leads you through a little garden, all the time giving you religious inspiration. It lifts you up and lets you know that God is always there especially in the garden.

Over and over again, I have enjoyed the soul-inspiring scripture wrapped up in a unique way with wonderful illustrations in Down a Garden Path. I enjoyed the "seed packets" and little envelopes scattered within the book, that contain little verses in an original way. I bought this book for a gift....and then had to get one to keep for myself!

This beautiful book was given to me as a gift, and will be one of the most treasured keepsakes I've received. The wonderful illustrations give life to the simple, yet deeply meaningful, encouragements needed as we walk the paths of life.

The minute the book "Love in Every Room " by Karla Dornacher was in my hands,I knew God had given me a very special gift. When I proceeded to order a copy for a dear friend, I was delighted to learn of another of her books "Down a Garden Path". I fell in love with this one, too.

I am so pleased that Karla recognized, accepted and used God's gift to her. She has made this a more charming, colorful world. I find I am using these books for birthday and get-well gifts plus always keeping one of eachto soothe me when I'm tired or stressed and to guide me when I need God's wisdom and peace.

      Book Description

Down the Garden Path has stood the test of time as one of the world's best-loved and most-quoted gardening books. Ostensibly an account of the creation of a garden in Huntingdonshire in the 1930s, it is really about the underlying emotions and obsessions for which gardening is just a cover story. The secret of this book's success---and its timelessness---is that it does not seek to impress the reader with a wealth of expert knowledge or advice. Beverley Nichols proudly declares his status as a newcomer to gardening: "The best gardening books should be written by those who still have to search their brains for the honeysuckle's languid Latin name..." As unforgettable as the plants in the garden is the cast of visitors and neighbors who invariably turn up at inopportune moments. For every angelic Miss Hazlitt there is an insufferable Miss Wilkins waiting in the wings. For every thought-provoking Professor, there is an intrusive Miss M, whose chief offense may be that she is a 'damnably efficient' gardener. From a disaster building a rock garden, to further adventures with greenhouses, woodland gardens, not to mention cats and treacle, Nichols has left us a true gardening classic.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful pre-war English Charm.......2007-02-18

A thoroughly charming book with a lovely pre-war atmosphere. It is about gardening yes, less about the technical than about the wonders. That weird, ratty vine you chopped down to get rid of, which bloomed like the Dickens two months later, the neighbor who knows everything, has a perfect garden, and seems to stop by just when a mystery fungus has claimed your best plants during the night. It's that kind of gardening book, about the joy of success and the deceit of garden catalogues.

Beverly Nichols bought his house for the garden he thought was there. He knew nothing about gardening. He learned through trial and error, and the man was enthusiastic and thought big. He wanted flowers in his garden in winter, and searched until he found them. He wanted to grow mushrooms. He wanted a wood in his field. You get the idea.

The writing is what makes this book. His description of the gardening books he found: "They were mostly in wrappers which showed women in obsolete hats standing with guilty expressions by the side of immense hollyhocks. They had terrible titles too..." Or perhaps about gardeners themselves, "People think that the gardener is a placid man, who chews a perpetual cud... a man whose mind moves slowly... Such ideas are very wide of the mark. A gardener is a wild and higly-strung creature, whose mind trembles like the aspen and is warped by sudden frosts and scarred by strange winds..."

      Well worth a winter read!

This is a lovely book. It gives a lot of garden advice, just between the lines.
I will read this over and over.

      4 out of 5 stars delightful reading.......2000-07-13

A wonderful narrative about this man's first garden in England in 1932 and his various experiences with it and the people around him. A rare combination of eloquent writing and down to earth humor left me chuckling throughout the book. Wonderful language and very entertaining. Besides the charming style, there is real gardening information to satisfy the plant-person. I got it at the library, and am here to buy it for my mother, who will love the tongue in cheek, English humor. Would recommend it as a feel-good book to curl up with, with your cup of tea!

Do you believe in fairies? If so, this book will delight you. "It wasn't produced for someone who isn't a believer in things magical," observes photographer Anne Geddes, who clearly is. What is also abundantly clear is that she appreciates the charm of babies and small children, and the role that fantasy plays in their young lives. Her tiny models become fairies, gnomes, sunflowers, water lilies, field mice, ladybugs, and peas in a pod in this amusing and endearing volume.

      Book Description

When I first looked at the book I thought it was too cute and too sacchrine but i've noticed that preschool aged children really enjoy looking at the babies dressed up in costumes. My son is nuts about this book and has read it dozens of times.

      1 out of 5 stars Really Creepy.......2005-01-16

I would give it no stars if that were possible. A really creepy approach to babies. Makes my skin crawl.

      1 out of 5 stars High Kitsch.......2003-12-02

Geddes' manages to degrade and isolate her subjects. Her prehistoric "cutsie" images, though appealing to a kitsch market, do not allow for a social comment to transcend the visual confines of her exploitive commercial "photography". In some senses, she could be seen as a radical post-modernist artist, as she abstracts the subject from social normality and removes any dignity from the development of the child, if that was her so calling in contemporary art. Yet it is frightening to be in an age where people will grasp such superficially degrading images. Geddes has made a personal fortune off photographing babies, subjects usually positioned in inhumane circumstances (ie: babies in flowerpots or dipped in custard), which removes human dignity and allows us to question Geddes moral intent.

5 out of 5 stars Magical Organic Baby Fantasies!.......2001-03-29

Ms. Geddes fills her large, oversized color pages with stunning pictures of a whimsical garden populated by babies. Her tiny models appear as fairies, flowers, insects, birds, and other small animals in the garden. Her imagination will transform the way you see babies . . . and gardens forever. You'll be glad to have experienced her magical touch.

The images are enlivened by simple texts of a few words just to help create a mood or a thought.

The compositions are quite elaborate. One contains dozens of children dressed up in worm outfits, and then transposed onto an image of them all in tunnels underground in the garden. What an amazing effort this must have taken!

One of her presentation techniques is to have a photograph inside a photograph. For example, there is a two page spread of a basket. Then, you can unfold the middle of the basket to reveal its babyish contents! In another place, she plays peek-a-boo with you by hiding one image within the photograph under a flap which you can open. When you do, the photograph's meaning totally changes.

As wonderful as her imagination and compositions are, I think her finest gift is to capture the baby's personality while awake.

The quality of the reproductions is extremely high, particularly considering that she is working with squirming infants in many cases.

Here are my favorites in the book:

Moth Orchid Triplets; Monica; Christopher; Aisha, Tayla and Grace; Wet Sparrow; Magnolia Bud; Sarah; Potting Shed; Starring Triplets -- Jim, Flora and Pearl; Window Planter; Strawberry Planter; Canterbury Belles; Ruby; Tea Pot, Watering Can and Milk Jug; Birdhouse; and Jessie.

This book would make a wonderful gift for expectant parents. They would suddenly feel their budding love for the developing baby evolve in new ways.

After you enjoy this book, consider where else a little magic and a dash of fantasy can create good feelings that will lead to more love and caring. How can you add those elements?

Enjoy the perpetual freshness of birth and youth around you!

          Book Description

"This work deserves the highest recognition . . . no-one can deny Juan Goytisolo is the main Spanish novelist on active service."-Carlos Fuentes

"A beautifully written metaphor for what it means to seek out the truth in a world often dominated by lies . . . this author, now 70 years of age, is one of the most brilliant of living writers."-The Los Angeles Times

Twenty-eight storytellers-one for each letter in the Arabic alphabet-meet in a garden to tell the story of a poet, Eusebio, arrested in the early days of the Spanish Civil War. Eusebio, a friend of Garcia Lorca and his circle, had escaped assassination and fled to North Africa.

Born in Barcelona, Juan Goytisolo left Spain in hatred of Franco. He now lives in Marrakesh, Morocco.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Garden of Earthly Delights.......2001-05-26

Borrowing the title from Hieronymous Bosch's painting as a way to present this book is cogent. Juan Goytisolo is considered Spain's foremost writer and if this small book, THE GARDEN OF SECRETS, is any indication, his standing is well supported.

To postulate the fate of a well know poet - Eusebio - who was close to Lorca and other writers during the Franco period of Spain, a poet who "disappeared" about the same time as Lorca, the author has gathered 28 literary people in a garden in Marrakesh to discuss the life and possible fates of the honored poet. We have, then, 28 versions of what happened to Eusebio, and the stories range from campy, to wild, to tragic, to nationalistic. Goytisolo is a linguist who mixes French, Arabic, Spanish - all the voices in the intrigue laden Marrakech, Morocco - and translates in footnotes and interactive conversations so that we never lose track of the story lines. This little book is somewhat like the story of the three blind men describing an elephant, or even the old Steve Allen show which featured characters from many periods sharing reponses to questions colored by their own histories. A delightful little diversion, this, and yet it is more. It is poetry, Spanish history, an exploration of the gay writers so prominent in Spanish history, and a beautiful introduction to the wonders of Marrakech. Credit must also be given to the translator - very sensitive work. If you are as unfamiliar with Goyistolo as I, thne I highly recommend this little book as a rapt starting point in your discovery of ANOTHER great writer of our times.

            Book Description

An international array of artists including Isamu Noguchi, Jenny Holzer and Vito Acconci have been using the garden as a vehicle for commentary on social and political issues, in both public and private realms. The lush Down the Garden Path offers a critical history of their and other artists' garden work from the 1940s to the present, and verdant examples in categories including paradise; the memorial; private and public gardens; and ecologies, their alternatives and Schreber gardens. Among pieces that readers won't likely see elsewhere are Paula Hayes's Plantpack 2000, a miniature garden in a Snugli, and five newly commissioned gardens for Queens. With essays by Jamaica Kincaid among others.

            Book Description

Babies as beatific butterflies. Babies as snoozing hedgehogs. Babies as tiny fairies dwelling in a magical garden. It's been ten amazing years since Anne Geddes brought these unmistakable inhabitants to life in Down In The Garden, her extraordinary ode to tiny babies and the enchantment they bring.

Down In The Garden became an international bestseller and was the perfect showcase for this now world-famous photographer's artistic vision. The book captures newborns in a variety of mythical poses: brightly coloured flowers with babies peeking out from behind them, sleeping babies snuggled inside bright green peapods, sprightly gnomes with darling baby faces. All come together to make Geddes' Down In The Garden an artistic masterpiece unlike any other.

This special 10th anniversary edition features all the striking images from the full-size volume in a more intimate package. Complemented by gently humorous text, the images reflect Geddes' appreciation for the beauty and innocence of babies. Her masterful imagery immediately communicates her deep and abiding love of children in a universal language understood by people everywhere.
