Book Description

For over fifteen years, the name of Mark Postlethwaite has been well-known and respected throughout the world of aviation art. Now, for the first time, over fifty of Mark's finest original paintings of this period are brought together in one truly outstanding collector's edition. Unlike most aviation art publications, War in the Air sets out the history shown in each of the paintings, with first-hand accounts and rare original wartime photographs. The historical text has been specially commissioned from leading aviation author Chris Goss, an expert in Luftwaffe and RAF operations over Europe.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Collection of Military Aviation Art!.......2006-02-22

If you're one of the many aviation enthusiasts who have enjoyed Mark Postlethwaite's fine cover art done for Osprey Publishing, you'll be delighted by this coffee-table art book that highlights over 50 of his original paintings.

Postlethwaite is a top-notch artist with an excellent eye for detail and a clear commitment to historically correct, realistic military aviation art. My personal favorites include the marvelous cover artwork depicting JG 5 FW 190s, the Battle of Britain scene on p. 23, "Blenheim Attack" on p. 61 and the Short Sunderland painting on p. 88.

Postlethwaite's artistry is complemented by Chris Goss' text which supplies the historical background for each painting, often including first-person narratives of the aircrew involved.

The price ($49.95) might seem a bit steep but, unless you are an aviation art collector, the book is the next best thing to purchasing the real thing. Highly recommended!

One aside: Postlethwaite included one Osprey cover in this book. I wish he had included more. His cover artwork for the "Luftwaffe Sturmgruppen" book is an absolutely superb piece of aviation art!

Book Description

Charbonneau (1805-1866) was a man of two worlds, Anglo/Indian and genteel/frontiersman. How he balanced these worlds makes him an intriguing character study in a complex West. Sacagawea's son, he rode in his Shoshone mother's cradleboard for 4,000 perilous miles with Lewis and Clark (1804-06), but that was only his beginning. The extensively researched text, based on documents gathered from archives, libraries and historical societies, places him in major events throughout the West. Personal relationships, period life ways and conflicts are revealed, along with some controversial interpretation. The extraordinary connection between the Charbonneau family and William Clark also is explored. The fast-paced book will inspire those who love the West and want to know more about key historical figures. Followers of the Charbonneau family, Clark, Indian history and culture, and those who embrace the natural western environment will enjoy the book even more. Please note: the writing style and thematic approach of this book are suitable for a wide audience, including students from age 15 to those with advanced knowledge of the era. "He was a man before his time, a model of diversity . . . and lived a life that many only dream about." Dr. David Diaz, Author "This is the epic story of an extraordinary American, not fully revealed until now." Larry M. Stewart, DCH, Author "It is remarkable how one person could be so involved in the history of the American West." Jean M. Klausner, Educator

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great reading!.......2005-05-10

A thoroughyly enjoyable and authentic record of a part of our American history. A young man's mark on a part of our history that makes this record a deeply memorable one. History books haven't begun to tell the in-depth, detailed truth about what really happened. Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars History at its Best.......2005-04-21

This informative and pleasurable read about Charbonneau, the much loved baby "Pomp" on the Corps of Discovery, puts a face on the man that went on to become successful throughout the charted but yet un-tamed West, in his own right. I feel as though I know so much more about this person due to Mr. Ritter's excellent research. Above all, as a novice history devotee, I appreciate the flow of the writing as it almost anticipates what your next question may have been about Charbonneau. The heavy handed, over-satiated blanket of scholarly approach would contrast greatly with the pure simplicity of this character, as he is portrayed.

5 out of 5 stars I Enjoyed it!.......2005-04-08

I'm giving it five stars partly because I thought a couple of the other reviewers were unfair. Not everybody wants the super in-depth study of a subject. I liked the book precisely because it skips the minutia and focuses on the most interesting elements of the story. I also appreciated the author's effort to engage the reader in reasonable supposition about Baptiste's undocumented activities. More on Charbonneau's time in Germany would have been useful, but otherwise I thought this was a stimulating and entertaining read.

1 out of 5 stars Lots of errors.......2005-03-18

I was, at first, excited to see a "new" biography of Charbonneau. However, this is mostly a rehash of available information. I found too many errors in this book to sustain any excitement. Wrong dates and quotations without sources are only a few of the problems. I'll wait for the new book being publised by Arthur Clark and keep my fingers crossed.

1 out of 5 stars Thin gruel.......2005-03-03

This book is thin gruel indeed. It is double spaced and large type presumably to make it thicker. Illustrations are of poor printed quality and too small. The author covers little if any new ground and is given to much conjecture with little documentation or footnoting. Particularly thin are the Mormon Batallion and California periods given the ample documentation that exists on these periods. I have read everything serious that is published on Baptiste, and this adds nothing to what is already out there. The fact is, little historical material exists on Baptiste, not even a photograph, although his contemporaries (like Beckwourth) were photographed. I waited longer than normal for the book and finished with it in one sitting disappointed. The most honest and best documented appraisal of Charbonneau's life is the 2001 Journal of Oregon History article, "Sacajawea's Son: by Albert Furtwangler reprinted in 2004 by Oregon Historical Society Press and the 1933 Anne W Hafen biography.

Book Description

American volunteers Don Gentile and John Godfrey flew together as leader and wingman respectively, with the USAAF 4th Fighter Group based at Debden near Cambridge. At the end of their missions with the 4th the two of them had accounted for over 58 enemy aircraft destroyed. Major Gentile had scored 22 air and 6 ground kills before he was returned to the USA to help raise money for the war effort. Major Godfrey was credited with 18 air and 12 ground kills before he was shot down and taken prisoner of war.

This is the story of their amazing adventures and wartime partnership from their basic training in Canada and then onto England where they first flew the Supermarine Spitfire. It continues with their transfer to the USAAF 4th Fighter Group when the US entered the war.

These two ace pilots loved life as much as flying - and as well as being hell-bent on destroying the enemy in the skies of Europe they also lived life to the full in their off-duty time in England.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Two Man AF generally ok.......2006-07-08

My biggest problem with this book is it's poorly organized and doesn't stick to the primary topic very well. The book is about 170 pages long and has about 20 pages devoted to Godfrey and Gentile, their tactics and their interaction with each other and the rest of their group. The great majority of the book covers their development in their youth (helps showing how they got there), the personalities of their unit and other units within the 8th AF in England in WW II. I bought this book with an eye to see how these men developed their tactics and how their personalities shapped it. I have the great bulk of this book contained in a substantial collection of books about the Eagle Squadrons and 4th Fighter Group.

      Book Description

This second volume of Brecht's Collected Plays brings together his two most glittering Berlin successes, The Threepenny Opera and The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny; another of his collaborations with Kurt Weill, the supremely ironic ballet libretto The Seven Deadly Sins; his witty exploration of the malleability of human personality, Man equals Man, and its "interlude for the foyer," The Elephant Calf.

Edited and introduced by John Willett and Ralph Manheim, the volume gives full translations of each of the plays and includes notes as well as all the most important textual variants.

      Book Description

Like a Man is the story of the most successful clandestine mission in the history of warfare. Based closely on fact but never limited by it, this World War II action adventure follows three paratroopers from their night-drop into Nazi-Occupied Czechoslovakia until the last shattering moments when they fight an entire regiment of SS troops to the death.

The paratroopers' mission, called Anthropoid, begins with a bad drop that puts them miles off their target and far from any help. It leads them by luck, accident and skill through the heart of the underground resistance to the culmination of their mission on a quiet suburban street in Prague.

There they assassinate the second most powerful man in Nazi Germany-the head of the SD and the Gestapo, the Protector of Czechoslovakia. How they did what no one else could do, and how they carried themselves onto the pages of history is one of the most compelling chapters in the long annals of secret war.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Action and suspense.......2007-07-31

LIKE A MAN is a stirring book that keeps coming until the last page plus two. A real mission performed by real people becomes in David Chacko's hands a well-wrought tale of action and suspense. Anthropoid (which probably means "like a man") was a team that parachuted behind German lines into Occupied Territory. Their mission was to assassinate the man who coordinated--and usually ran--the most terrible Nazi policies of brutality and extermination. History remembers him, but would remember much better if he had lived to fulfill his destiny as Hitler's successor. That he did not is a tribute to these two men, who were eventually joined by a third man as they entered the wartime underground, disappearing from the Gestapo radar until it was time to surface and close out their mission. When they do, the facade of Nazi Germany invincibility is shattered in bursts of violence that are meant to terrorize. Instead, the outrage it inspired fed the Allied war effort. All the large historical figures are here to give background and tastes of their character--Churchill, Hitler, Himmler--but the men who took their mission to its end against the longest odds are the ones who should be remembered. They were men and this is Like a Man.

5 out of 5 stars MISSION IMPOSSIBLE PLUS.......2005-08-13

LIKE A MAN is a first-rate read and a great piece of historical writing. The wartime atmosphere, the importance of the mission, two dedicated commandos, and well-drawn supporting characters, including Churchill, Hitler, Himmler, Heydrich, along with many members of the WWII underground, make for a fascinating picture of men under orders to do the impossible. They did it, and their story is one for the ages.

5 out of 5 stars ANTHROPOID IS AN ADVENTURE WORTH REMEMBERING.......2005-08-11

This is an exciting book as real as the events it tells about. Like A Man begins at a very high level where the wartime mission is conceived and leads us through the turmoil of give-and-take espionage on the streets. Almost everything that can go wrong does for the two men who are told to carry out the assassination against all odds. That they did is a tribute to their courage. Chacko gets us on the ground from the first parachute jump and keeps us there all the way to the furious end.

        Book Description

Using his intimate knowledge of John Locke's writings, John W. Yolton shows that Locke comprehends "human understanding" as a subset of a larger understanding of other intelligent Beings—angels, spirits, and an omniscient God. Locke's books on Christianity (The Reasonableness of Christianity and Paraphrases of St. Paul's Epistles) have received extensive analysis and commentary, but little attention has been given to the place of his Essay concerning Human Understanding in his religious and theological beliefs. Yolton shows that Locke's account of what it is to be human in that work is profoundly religious.

Yolton's book opens with an attempt to sort out several important terms basic to Locke's account of identity: man, self, person, and soul. A number of rarely examined components of Locke's thought emerge: the nature of man, the nature of a human being, and the place of man in the universe among the other creatures. Some will be surprised to learn that the domain of God, angels, and spirits is a part of Locke's universe, where it is considered the hoped-for destination of the just.

The Two Intellectual Worlds of John Locke also includes Yolton's exploration of Locke's commitment to immaterial principles for understanding the world; his obsession with happiness; the dialectical tensions between man, person, and soul; several interesting conjectures about spirits; and the notion of natural philosophy that includes speculation about spirits as well as bodies.

DC has two recent incompatible revivals of Adam Strange - this one and Adam Strange: Planet Heist, which was followed by The Rann-Thanagar War (Countdown to Infinite Crisis). Adam Strange: The Man of Two Worlds is well written, but dark. It also appears to not be the path chosen for future continuity. Both paths have an Adam Strange with the complexity and emotional challenge lacking in the 50's-60's stories. If you want an upbeat story, look to the alternative revival books; if you are not adverse to a fair amount of tragedy, try this book.

Though written during the Cold War, a work of remarkable perceptiveness and insights on how education, psychology, and even international relations can become more conscious and more healing in our time. This book has appeared in six editions and has been translated into German, Dutch, and Russian.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Worth the Effort.......2004-11-02

This book requires more than passive reading, for at least two reasons. First, there are references to Cold War issues that no longer apply, and one has to think through how contemporary ones such as fundamentalism and globalization might apply in their place. Second, the author writes out of a difference paradigm that we are used to. To get the full benefit of the work one has to be open to thinking "outside the box." Nevertheless the book is a healing one because it helps an individual to integrate body, soul, and spirit, to find higher purpose, and to find one's way toward personal transformation.

To have written this book, Dr. Winkler had to be more than a physician; he was a healer whose fresh insights can help seekers on many different paths.

          Book Description

In this follow-up to Taste Pure and Simple winner of the James Beard Cookbook Award Michel Nischan takes his philosophy of healthy cooking from garden to kitchen. Inspired to provide his growing family with meals as full of flavor as those he'd enjoyed at his mother's table, Michel planted a garden of his own. The result was a delicious array of recipes based on the best the garden or, if you're not that fortunate, the organic produce in the farmers' market or grocery store has to offer. Sweet tomatoes and bitter lettuces, peppery radishes and succulent strawberries these are but a handful of fruits, herbs, and vegetables that, served alone or combined with quality meats and poultry, ripened cheeses, or whole grains, inspired these 80 seasonal recipes, each one as good for the body as it is for the palate. Including a superb chapter on extending the harvest, full of fruit preserves and jams, pickled vegetables, sauces, salsas, flavored oils, spice mixes, and even a few refreshing drinks, Homegrown Pure and Simple is a book that not only conveys the sheer joy of feeding family and friends well, but also takes healthy cooking to an exciting and delicious new level.

          1 out of 5 stars A seed that won't sprout.......2006-10-04

If I had had one minute with this book in a bookstore I would have known the title was a terrible misnomer, but I ordered it online. The book has nothing to offer on the subject of raising your own food for the table. It is a cookbook by someone who had a vegetable garden for ONE YEAR before writing it. There are no strategies for gardening and no insider knowledge of what it actually takes to raise produce consistently enough to eat. He just likes the idea. Well, I do too. As a longtime gardener and cook, I was hoping to learn something new. I didn't.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful, pure and simple.......2006-06-14

I really like this pure and simple cookbook. The recipes are so beautiful!!

5 out of 5 stars This isn't your usual vegetable cookbook.......2005-12-06

Vegetable gardening and recipes seldom blend so seamlessly as in Homegrown Pure And Simple: Great Healthy Food From Garden To Table. Here's a compendium of dishes spiced with color photos by Susie Cushner throughout which celebrate both gardening and cooking. This isn't your usual vegetable cookbook, either: Grilled Lamb Chops with Home-Dried Tomatoes and Citrus Yogurt and Pistachio Pork Loin with Pumpkin Sauce are dishes not to be found in any cookbook. That's because author Michel Nischan has served up healthful haute cooking at a range of upscale restaurants: so these are largely his own inventions.

5 out of 5 stars What we all need to read.......2005-12-03

Delicious, appetizing recipes fill this book, all of which were made from the freshest organic ingredients, giving a pure simple taste. An excellent second book by Michel Nischan, winner of a James Beard cookbook award in 2004 for his book, Taste Pure and Simple.

Michel Nischan grew up in Illinois where his mother grew most of their fruits and vegetables. His love of food coninued as an adult where he became the executive chef of Heartbeat in the W Hotel (NY-1997). Nischan is a contributor to numerous magazines including: Bon Appetit, Gourmet, Cooking Light, and much more. He has also appeared on various television programs. He is the founding member of New American Farming Initiative. He currently lives in Connecticut with his wife and five children.

Mary Goodbody is a food writer who has worked on over 45 cookbooks.

Susie Cushner is a photographer whose work has appeared in Real Simple, Gourmet, Martha Stewart Living and more. She has worked on numerous books: The New England Table, The Cape Cod Table, The Pleasures of Slow Food and The Bride & Groom First and Forever Cookbook.

Michel Nischan yearned for the days where his mother grew all their vegetables in their garden when he was a child. With the tragic findings that two of his five children were diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes (at ages five and two), his focus on his cooking changed. He decided that not only should he and his family eat healthier, but also his restaurant customers. This book has been inspired by his children and his desire for fresh pure ingredients without the use of cream, butter, processed starches or processed sugars. Michel has made it his mission to educate people on eating and cooking healthier.

This is more than a cookbook, but also a book filled with cooking and gardening tips, planting seeds, storing produce, sterilizing jars, choosing knives, and handling food. There is an excellent glossary in the back of the book, as well as a list of sources if some items are hard-to-find in your area. And I must comment on the gorgeous photographs throughout this book.

This book has even received kudos from the American Heart Association and Alice Waters.

The book is broken down by the following chapters: My Garden and How It Grew; Salads; Soups; Main Courses; Side Dishes; Extending the Harvest; Breakfast and Breads; Desserts. The recipes are wonderful. They are simple to make and extremely tasty. In fact, I never even noticed, initially, that the book had no recipes laden with fat and sugar! Some of my favorites in this book were: Osaka Mustard Greens Salad; Pumpkin Soup with Crispy Sage Garnish; Baked Fresh Ham with Roasted Apple and Almond Salad; Skillet-Browned Broccoli and Cauliflower with Pan-Toasted Garlic; Homemade Applesauce; Butternut Squash Muffins; and Sweet Corn and Toasted Almond Rice Pudding.

In our society, where everything runs at such a fast pace, I think it is time to slow down, and appreciate life and family. Eat healthier. Buy this book!
