A must for anyone who deals with difficult people.......2007-08-15
I am an acoustical and systems design consultant, and prior to that have held jobs in sound contracting and public assembly facility technical operations for a total of approximately 25 years. As anybody who has worked in the entertainment, performing arts, hospitality, or religious world can attest, I come into contact with more than my fair share of difficult people and tense situations.
This book and the courses authorized or taught by its author were highly recommended to me approximately 15 years ago by a police lieutenant who gave a guest lecture in a criminology class I was taking in college. This same officer also mentioned the book at an in-house training event at the university sports/concert arena where I worked at the time. It is with no small amount of embarrassment that I must report that it took me until last year to "get around to" buying and reading this book. I certainly could have used its advice, even years before it was written!
Suffice it to say that Verbal Judo is the type of book that is enlightening upon the initial read-through, but whose true value only comes from steady effort to change one's behaviors from long-held bad habits. I believe learning would be far more effective with ongoing practice and coaching, just as with a physical martial art. However, until such a dojo opens its doors in my fair city, I shall have to make do with re-reading the book and discussing its application with others who have been similarly blessed by its wisdom.
Outstanding book and program.......2007-07-16
We are taught Verbal Judo in my line of work. It's an outstanding program. The book goes into how the program originated and explains it in detail. If you're into law enforcement, security or EMS this book should be mandatory reading.
A must read for all Law Enforcement........2007-06-19
I have heard the term "verbal judo" tossed around at work since first becoming a Deputy Sheriff with a metro Atlanta Sheriff's Office almost a year ago. For a few years verbal judo was taught to all new deputies but apparently our department let our certification lapse and as such when I joined it had ceased to be taught.
Well I want to be the best deputy that I can be and thus I went and ordered this book. I couldn't put it down! I carried it with me while I worked at the jail and read it in my office on my down time. In two days I finished the book and felt like I had a new weapon to add to my arsenal when dealing with people.
I liked the book so much, I actually loaned it to another deputy on my shift and like wise he couldn't put it down. Another deputy saw him reading the book, asked him where he got and she then proceed to track me down and ask if she could borrow the book next.
The books made me rethink all the altercations I have had at the jail and even in life. How I could have handle things better. As I prepare to go to academy in September and then shortly afterwards, the road, I feel that by taking the time to educate myself on this vital concept, I have greatly helped prepare myself for not only the road but for life itself.
THIS BOOK REALLY,REALLY, SUCKS!!!.......2007-06-06
THIS BOOK TITLE IS VERY MISLEADING..IT DOESN'T GIVE THE TYPE OF KNOWLEDGE IT IMPLIES..IF YOU WANT ANY TYPE OF SKILL, IN TERMS OF COMMUNICATION OR OTHERWISE, THE 48 LAWS OF POWER HAS IT! AS DOES ALL OF ROBERT GREENES OTHER BOOKS..THAT IS AN AUTHOR THAT DOESN'T FALSE ADVERTISE! HE TEACHES EXACTLY WHAT HE CLAIMS AND MUCH MORE!CHECK HIM OUT.THE ART OF SEDUCTION BY GREENE IS ALSO MUCH MORE HELPFUL IN VERBAL SITUATIONS, THOUGH NOT AS MUCH AS HIS OTHER TWO BOOKS.BUYING HIS THREE DEFINITELY WON'T DISAPPOINT
The 48 Laws of Power
Very good book.......2007-05-24
I found this book very interesting and useful.
I wish only not to forget to refresh verbal judo guidelines - I tend
to return to my old , not sophisticated ways of dealing with difficult people..
The idea of "Verbal Judo" makes all the ideas in this book memorable
and significant . Good attitude and wise form of presentation.
I really thank the author for this remarkable book

I use ONE recipe ALL THE TIME.......2007-07-16
I really do like this book--I see all sides of the reviews (mostly). It's not sophisticated, or an "ice cream bible," but I've made a great majority of these recipes and have found I like them all! The one I consistently use as a jumping off point for many creative endeavors, is the "lower fat vanilla" with the sweetened condensed milk. Delicious!!!
Good Recipes for Ice Cream.......2007-07-15
This book is very thorough, well-organized, and easy to use. I like the diversity of recipes, although I find that the ones that came in the little brochure with my ice cream maker are the ones I use more often. (Because I think they are even easier.) I am glad I bought the book and get a lot of pleasure from its recipes.
Piss and moan.......2007-04-07
One half of the reviews whine about it not giving enough information rather than discuss it's merits for its target audience. So the complaints are not about the end products (which are marvelous), but making a bad decision. The blame one's own mistakes on the book approach. In the final analysis, the recipes are straight forward, interesting, and simple to produce.
The other half complain about the fact that there are many flavors a family would never create. True, but the title says 500 recipes -- what do you expect? 500 variations on vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate? With 500 recipes available, expect the mundane and the unusual. If your only concern is making something for the grandkids or the team, stick with the book that came with your maker. That being said, the final products are creative and generally delicious, depending of course on personal tastes.
The Ultimate Ice Cream Book.......2007-04-05
Now here's a BOOK! Great and unusual recipes. Many very easy, a few more complicated, but, hey, Ice Cream is serious business! Best book I have seen on the subject.
Must cook before making ice cream.......2006-11-24
I read the reviews and many people complained about the recipes having eggs in them. I thought that I could just omit the eggs and still have good ice cream. Well, I have owned the book for over a year and have yet to make a single batch of ice cream. All ice cream recipes must be cooked in advanced and then cooled. Probably 95% of them have eggs in them. While the recipes may be delicious (I don't know), it is far too much effort for me. I exclusively use the manual that I got with my ice cream maker and have played around with that instead. The author has some great ideas for unique types of ice cream and the sugar cone recipes are interesting as well, but I'll probably just donate this unused book to the library.

Known as China's Fountain of Youth, green tea has been recognized as a powerful healer in preventing cancer and slowing the aging process. Since its first recorded use 4,000 years ago, people have been drinking green tea for its health-preserving and revitalizing power. Lester Mitscher and Victoria Dolby explore the beverage's health claims in The Green Tea Book. Using scientific research, The Green Tea Book examines each benefit, from the prevention of cancer and heart disease to simulating mental clarity and reducing cholesterol levels. Polyphenols, naturally occurring compounds found in green tea, supplement the body's antioxidant levels and are the primary mechanism by which green tea prevents the formation of cancer. In addition to the health benefits, Mitscher and Dolby present the history of green tea as well as guidelines for choosing, brewing, and storage. The Green Tea Book is the complete guide to green tea and will help you understand why it works and how you can use it for both its health-promoting qualities and its great taste. --Gretel Hakanson
Customer Reviews:
A Scientific Approach.......2001-06-14
While I often enjoy drinking green tea because of its taste, this book presents some its healthful benefits that are said to be scientifically based. At least I think they're scientifically based. Apparently subsequent information has been published that contradicts Dr. Mitscher's findings. The impact of the existence of polyphenols and antioxidents has not clearly been substantiated. I am not a scientist, so I am still confused on the issue, and this book only adds to my confusion. However, it does provide hope. Thus, I will continue to drink green tea because I like it. If it proves to be as healthful as this book claims, I have only gained.
In depth research regarding the health benefits of green tea.......2000-07-06
I found such wonderful and informative information in this book. From general health benefits of drinking green tea to chapters dedicated to specific health problems such as different cancers, dental health, cardio, etc. Everything is backed-up with study and research results so you know actual numbers. And if it's not a fact, they let you know. I drink a lot more green tea now!

Terrific guide to green tea........2006-03-19
I think this book is great. It has wonderful information, details a great variety of teas, and is smart in its discussion of history, lore, utensils, brewing vessels. The reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is that she doesn't discuss the techniques of pouring water into and onto tea, which are so important to proper brewing. If using a gaiwan, you are supposed to pour the water along the sides so that it doesn't directly hit (and potentially overheat) the leaves. If using a small teapot you are supposed to pour the water into the cups you will be using, to cool it down, and from the cup into the kyusu or teapot. If using a modern glass infuser teapot, especially larger sizes, you are supposed to fill the pot half full of water, immerse the infuser with leaves into the water, then pour the rest of the water down the side of the infuser and into the pot. This will guarantee the leaves aren't overbrewed and that the brew will be even. Other than that I found the book a real delight, even if you know a lot about green tea.
Another excellent Storey Book.......2004-02-11
Ms. Rosen does an excellent job of enticing the uninitiated with her descriptions of the varied pleasures of tea; there was just so much I was unaware of. This book is chock full of information, lore, recipes and health benefits of the many, many different teas. Being a new devotee, I especially found the resources section of immeasurable value.
Experience Therapy in a Cup.......2001-08-27
Amazon shows you the table of contents. From that table you can see the theme of the book. To add to this the back cover mentions: . How to blend, brew, and appreciate more than 120 varieties of green tea . Up-to date information on the health benefits of drinking green tea . Recipes for cooking with green tea and making green tea bodycare products . Rich green tea history, poetry, lore, and tradition from around the world The book has pictures along with descriptions of green teas that look almost identical but are different. There are pictures of tea paraphernalia and locations of tea origins. You see tea bags tea glasses and even the chemical formula for tea. After you get past that there are many practical recipes involving green tea; any one of which makes is worth the price of the book.
Packed with information............2000-07-06
I found this book very useful while doing research for my online tea shop. I found a great deal of useful information and it is presented clearly and elegantly. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about green tea.
Everything you never knew you could know about Green Tea!.......2000-05-09
I picked up this book because I was looking for a source of "recipes" for soaps and other bad items using green tea, and was pleasantly surprised to find it's a veritable encyclopedia of information on green tea. I was already fairly well-versed in the various "cultures" of green tea in China and Japan, and the author does a nice job of summarizing this for the reader, including not just various ways to prepare it, but also giving a quick primer on the needed utensils. Finally, the green tea ice cream recipe is a keeper (though I cut the number of egg yolks from 3 to 5, and leave out the lemon rind, nutmeg, and half the vanilla which overpower the delicate green tea flavor). Great all-around book on a product that's as healthy as it is enjoyable.

'tea time'.......2005-07-28
This is an attractive coffee table book that is an interesting light reading book on the subject of tea. The pictures are great but the book could be greatly improved if was more detailed in terms of its content.
Great Photos.......2005-04-07
This books has many beautiful photos in it, but was rather sparse content wise. I was at first thrilled as I thumbed through the pages, but when I sat down to read it properly I was somewhat disappointed. What I thought was a section on cooking with tea was actually a recipe section for items that go well with tea. There were perhaps 2 or 3 recipes that actually contained tea as an ingredient.
Very beautiful concise introduction!.......2004-05-21
This would be a perfect gift for most of those who love art and life style...It's such a beautifully written and illustrated book that you would like to keep for a very long time. It provided concise yet somewhat comprehensive survey of modern noted teas and the related. The best thing I like about it is that it provides detailed web sources as to where to buy teaware and teas and what are the existing noted teahouses in America. It's up to date survey. Highly recommended.
A nice coffee (tea?) table book........2003-12-13
The New Tea Book is a nice, light read for those who want to learn a little more about tea. It's not the definitive treatise on the subject, but it's great to just pick up and flip through.
There are a number of subjects covered, mainly breaking down into information about the history and production of tea; varieties and types of tea; preparation and serving information; and a few recipes.
It's not the densest book around. If you're knowledgeable about the subject, you know everything that's contained in here already. True tea snobs will find a thing or two to turn their nose up at.
The recipes are interesting, and while I haven't had a chance to try any yet, they may be one of the best reasons to buy the book (snob or no). There are recipes for desserts, beverages, and a few sandwiches. Some of this stuff looks real good and pretty easy to pull off.
The photography is top-notch, and in some cases almost justifies the purchase of the price. But just be ready for light reading that you can flip through as opposed to deep, informative writing.

A touching story that crosses all cultural lines.......2007-09-27
Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (9/07)
"Green Tea" is a touching story about a Korean woman, Jung, who moves to Argentina to be with her husband from an arranged marriage. When Jung arrives in her new country she has to get used to both her new husband and her controlling mother-in-law, Mrs. Kim. Her husband is easier to adjust to. She lives in the same house with her mother-in-law and her husband's siblings.
Mrs. Kim seems to take pleasure in berating Jung. She wants Jung to do everything her way and lets her know when she breaches etiquette. Jung misses her own mother who is still back in Korea. She does her best and in time, she and Mrs. Kim do find somewhat of a connection. Jung also does her best to connect to her husband's siblings. Each one has their issues and struggles to deal with. Jung has to find a way to keep her own identity and to keep her new family happy.
It is noted that the author, Silvia Chung, bases much of her novel on stories about her mother and grandmother's experiences. I think that this really adds richness to the story. In "Green Tea," you step inside the life of a woman who has to overcome some incredibly strong obstacles to her own happiness. I cannot imagine agreeing to be in an arranged marriage, let alone one to a man who lives in another country. Since this is a South American country, Jung also has to deal with cultural issues. She is not readily accepted by some of her new countrymen and her family has their own cross-cultural issues.
I totally enjoyed "Green Tea." Having had an Italian Grandmother-in-law whom I had to ban from my kitchen when I got tired of her telling me that the way I did things was "Stupid," I could relate to much of what Jung was dealing with. It is amazing how you can learn to love someone who makes you life very difficult!
This is a great novel. It would make an excellent gift for a mother-in-law or a daughter-in-law. It would also be a great book to be on a reading list for a cultural studies or cultural counseling class. "Green Tea" takes you into another time and shows you what it is like to be a woman in a culture that requires a great deal of restraint and social protocol
If I only knew.......2007-08-30
Had I read this book 6 months ago, I may have been able to salvage an 18 year relationship with a woman I intended to spend the rest of my life with. After reading this book, things she had told me for years finally make complete sense.
A wonderful story.......2007-08-13
Green Tea is a delicate and moving book about building a family and adapting to a new culture without losing a sense of self. The relationships between the characters are beautiful and very real. Ms. Chung draws you in to the lives of each member of the Kim family and leaves you still anxious to know their fates.
Family is forever.......2007-07-29
Never has the old adage of "You don't marry a person, you marry a family" so true. Marriage is the merging, and at times the collision, of two cultures. Green Tea is a wonderfully well-written novel that tells the story of a new bride, Jung, and her "initiation" period into a new marriage. Jung soon realizes that with all marriages, there are times of joy as well as times of challenges. This book is truly phenomenal and speaks volumes about what it means to be a woman, for better or worse. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the future works of this author.
A MUST READ.......2007-07-21
This is a touching story that grabs the reader from page one. It is a good read for anyone interested in learning about the little examined Korean immigrant experience and Korean family dynamics. Chung's fresh and unique perspective sets her apart from other Korean writers of our time.
