Book Description
For many of us, perfectionism can bring life's most desired rewards. But when the obsessive need for perfection and control gets in the way of our professional and emotional lives, the cost becomes too high. Although many of us appear cool and confident on the outside, inside we are in emotional turmoil, trying to satisfy everyone, attempting to direct the future, and feeling that we are failing.
In TOO PERFECT, Dr. Allan Mallinger draws on twenty years of research and observations from his private practice to show how perfectionism can sap energy, complicate even the simplest decisions, and take the enjoyment out of life. For workaholics or neat freaks, for anyone who fears change or making mistakes, needs rigid rules, is excessively frugal or obstinate, TOO PERFECT offers revealing self-tests, fascinating case histories, and practical strategies to help us overcome obsessiveness and reclaim our right to happiness.

Life Changing.......2006-09-13
Normally I would not be writing a review for an item. I always thought it was because I was lazy, or that I didn't care. After reading this book, I have come to realize that it was in large part because subconsciously, I could not meet my own perfectionist expectations. There are a lot of low-risk undertakings in life that I have not attempted for the same reason.
This book, for me, has brought to my conscious awareness all of the subconscious obsessive thoughts that were creating immense frustration and anxiety in my life. Of course, I realize that changing perfectionistic thoughts is not a quick fix. It takes time and effort, in both cognitive and behavioral aspects.
Of all the books I've read on CBT, NLP, perfectionism and the like, this book has meant the most to me personally than any other book I have ever read.
If you have perfectionistic tendencies, in ANY area of your life, then I hope this book will bring you waves of insight and comfort, like it did me.
Fabulous Book.......2006-03-10
I had trouble finding a good book about obsessive compulsive personality type (most were about obssessive compulsive disorder) until I found this one. It was so fascinating that I flew through it in one night! I had many "ah-ha" moments while reading the book, and recognized certain traits in my spouse, my mother, and myself. I found the book to be well written, easy to read and understand, and amazingly informative. It had many positive things to say to balance the negative and included constructive suggestions for changing behavior patterns. I highly recommend reading this book.
Wow.......2005-04-19
I tend to be rather obsessive and perfecitionist about many things, and have often suffered from this (though I'm not a typical obsessive-compulsive). This book has given me great insights into my own destructive ways of thinking and behaving. It was a lot of fun to read and very encouraging and comforting. Insight is one thing of course, changing your behavior (for which the book gives several tipps) is another. But this book is a great start.
Best book yet.......2004-07-03
I think I have now read all of the book on perfectionism and OCPD. This was the best yet as it was the first time that they were not just focusing on perfectionism but being obsessive. It was the only one that mentioned Obsessive Compulsive Personallity Disorder instead of perfectionism. Perfectionism is one form of OCPD and this book covers it all with great recommendations on how to get over each form of it. This should be the only lay persons book you will need from a secular stand point.
Loved it and use it all the time.......2004-06-22
I think this book is outstanding and touches on a topic that so many people can relate to. A valuable resource to say the least!

Great resource!.......2007-02-08
This is a great resource to have for travelling. I love the tabbed setup that makes it easy to get to the section I need. Obviously a lot of thought was put in to making the book (with an amazing amount of info.) as easy to use as possible.
It is obvious that a great deal of thought and experimentation has been put forth in the making of this valuable resource!
After being gf (and other things free) for 5 years, I appreciate the resource as it will make it far more possible for me to visit Italy (and other countries in my future) maintaining my health as much as possible along the way! Well done!
I have dining cards and they work quite well, but the next time I travel, I will be packing this book to take as well, without a doubt!

A Wonderful Resource For Dining Out Gluten Free.......2007-01-25
Eating when you're away from your own home is always a challenge when you are on a special diet.
In "Let's Eat Out!" Koeller and La France have put together an impressive amount of information to make life easier for travelers and people who just want to eat out with family and friends.
I found the book a bit difficult at first because there is just so much content to sort out. It's definitely not a book to digest in one sitting!
I soon realized it really is a combination of broad reference guide and quick reference "cheat sheets." Once that became clear, it was much easier to scan and use the table of contents and index to find specific information. You can choose to just use the quick guides or go to the more detailed explanations.
All in all, the authors cover a very broad topic in an orderly fashion that makes it easy to locate information for a variety of situations. They use 7 common cuisine types, from American Steak and Seafood to Thai, to analyze the issues a diner can expect to face. They offer comments on the ingredients, the way food is prepared and on likely sources of hidden cross contamination.
After you read a couple of these, you begin to see the patterns and it would not be so difficult to apply the same process to another type of food. As they point out, it's all about educating yourself and learning what questions to ask.
Poring through their food/menu analysis, I discovered to my dismay that the item I had been selecting from a fast food restaurant most likely contains hidden gluten that I would not have thought to question. I did wonder why I didn't feel good every time I ate there!
Not only does the book cover information about individual foods, styles of cuisine, and 10 common food allergens, it also provides specific information about travel including contact information for individual airlines and the special diets they provide, contact information for associations and organizations in many parts of the world and even some translation phrases.
I'd recommend "Let's Eat Out!" as a valuable reference book. It's especially useful for those who frequently eat out or travel and even better, those who'd like to eat out more but have hesitated to take the risk. It could open up a whole new world.
The authors deserve the recognition that their book received as a Benjamin Franklin award finalist for 2006 in the Health (Wellness/Nutrition) category.
For gluten intolerance and food sensitivities.......2007-01-20
"Let's Eat Out!" covers a very difficult topic, restaurant dining for people with food allergies and intolerances. For adults who should avoid top allergens due to mild to moderate food allergies and intolerances, this can be a very useful book. I have already referenced it a few times for some restaurant inspiration, outside of my usual Asian selections.
The book itself is stylishly laid out with color-coded chapters, strategically placed photographs, useful charts, and sample menus. It addresses ten of the most common food allergens: dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten (an intolerance), soy, peanuts, tree nuts, corn, fish, and shellfish.
It should be noted, that this book was written with celiac disease, multiple food "sensitivities", and gluten intolerance in mind. It may not be very appropriate for those who have life-threatening food allergies or severe intolerances. This is not to blame the authors. The various styles of food preparation combined with a high risk of cross-contamination in food service kitchens, make this a complicated area to address. Though, as one food allergy mom pointed out to me, the "Allergy-Free" title is a bit deceiving in this respect.
Also, for those who do have true food allergies, this book should not be used as a dining bible, but more as a suggestion based resource for further research and diligence. As someone who lives with a milk protein allergy, I unfortunately noted many errors with respect to the foods listed as "not containing the allergen." Guacamole (often made with sour cream), margarine (frequently contains lactose and/or milk protein), and sausages (many brands contain cheese) were just a few that caused me to raise the red flag. Your own questions and food label reading would still be required when utilizing this book.
Luckily, the authors do relay what questions to ask, and in many different languages. Kim Koeller has traveled extensively while living with multiple food allergies. This is well evidenced by the resources provided, including a multi-lingual phrase section and what seems to be a very useful airline guide. For those most interested in travel, the authors of "Let's Eat Out!" have also produced a "Multi-Lingual Phrase Passport" for food allergies that is pocket-sized. I thought this was a very handy little guide!
Let's Eat Out!.......2007-01-09
Basically, it says be suspicious of EVERYTHING. As a Celiac, I am already. This book did not help me and I was disappointed but I can see how it might help someone newly diagnosed. Being vigilant is the key.
Its OK...........2006-12-22
I was a little disapointed because many of the allergy graphs show gluten as possible, so that isn't much of a help, since that was already a given. I guess if you are looking for some where to START looking for gluten in your food, then this is a place to start. If you have been doing it for a while, then you really don't need this book....

Book Description
For those who love fish or clams, lobster, scallops, mussels, octopus, oysters, crab, or shrimp but are in need of a definitive guide to making it at home, here's a Big Book that's a whale of catch. This tell-all volume helps the home cook not only select the fish or shellfish from the market, but also then turn it into a delicious meal in a few easy-to-follow steps. The book is organized by type of seafood, so if, say, snapper is not available that day, a quick substitution can be made with catfish, flounder, or whatever similar fish is freshest. The author's tips for selection, preparation, and cooking techniques (including poaching, steaming, baking, grilling, frying, and roasting) allow the reader to cook with confidence. With more than 250 outstanding recipes, from appetizers and main courses to great classic side dishes, this latest addition to the Big Book series means nobody has to be chicken of the sea.

Favorite Cookbook.......2006-11-02
This book has so many good recipes in it, I don't know where to start! My favorite is the Salmon Stuffed with Mascarpone Cheese and Spinach (use frozen). The recipe bakes it but I put mine on the grill. The Morehead City Shrimp Burgers is another favorite, as well as the Buttery Garlicky Steamed Clams. The book doesn't have any pictures in it, but don't let that be your deciding factor, the recipes are really good, and each recipe is accompanied by a brief description or introduction. Some of the recipes feature fish that may not be popular for all areas but in those cases, the author may mention that another type of fish can be substituted. Or substitute your favorite fish. If you are not familiar with buying and cooking fish and seafood, the author lays out the basics in the beginning of the book which covers the difference between fresh and frozen, what to look for, storing, and appropriate cooking methods.
Fish and Shellfish cooked to perfection..........2006-05-25
The Big Book of Fish and Shellfish is written by a cooking school teacher and food writer. There are no pictures in this cookbook but lots of fish and shell fish recipes, that are fool proof and plenty of tips to guide you to perfect your cooking skills.
No more restaurant fish.......2006-05-23
I admit to only eating fish at restaurants because my fish was boring and never cooked right. So I bought this book. Wow what a difference.
I made the barbecued salmon for my family for Mother's day, and no one touched the chicken. It was cooked perfectly and had loads of flavor. Then I tried the baked filets with spinach and pine nuts, and I was hooked.
The tips are a big help and the book is fun to read. I think anyone who wants to eat more fish would love this book because it is full of ideas that simple enough to do, but full of flavor.

Fabulous Fish!.......2000-04-22
This is a great cookbook. I've tried several of the dishes, and they have all been good. I just made the swordfish piccata, and it was really yummy! There's a good variety, and even people who aren't big fish fans can find something they will like. The directions are clear and simple to follow, and the receipes are all easy to prepare.

Unusually good fish cookbook.......2005-06-01
Despite its low price on Amazon, this is a standout fish cookbook. One of its notable features is that the index cross-references similar fish. For example, if you happen to have red snapper, you'll find that the index points you to some very good recipes for striped bass and grouper that work well with the snapper. The recipe for salmon with fresh basil sauce by itself is worth the price of the book.

Great introduction........2003-02-22
In its roughly 50 parts, all written by experienced cooks and cook book writers, HP Books' "The Book of ... Cooking" series takes you to the cuisines of various regions of the U.S. and around the world; all in easy to follow, well-explained recipes.
This installment, the Book of Fish and Shellfish, starts with an introduction on preparing, cooking, skinning and filleting fish and preparing shellfish, and then presents recipe suggestions for all major types of seafood recipes, from flatfish to mixed catch and smoked fish dishes. Special chapters are dedicated to firm white fish, rich fish, shrimp, crab, lobster, mussels and oyster recipes. Classics such as crab cakes, Cajun style red snapper, chowders, gravlax, Mediterranean fish soup (bouillabaisse), oysters Rockefeller and seafood gumbo appear next to unique dishes such as bass with ginger and lime, flounder with prosciutto, monkfish in coconut cream, salmon with avocado salsa, trout and artichoke frittata, trout with hazelnuts, and tuna and ginger vinaigrette.
From Angels on Horseback (oysters wrapped in bacon) to yogurt-topped halibut, this collection of recipes, while not all-encompassing, is a great introduction to the endless varieties of seafood dishes - and at a relative bargain price, to boot.

Excellent for traveling with food allergies or sensitivities.......2007-01-20
This is the first multi-lingual allergy guide I have ever come across. The authors have done an excellent job. Though dialects may vary, and certain regions may have their own ways of describing a food, this is a very helpful little resource.
It is literally the size of a passport, and thus perfect for travel. It is English based with translations for French, German, Spanish, and Italian. The phrases address various situations (from conversing with waiters to describing symptoms to a doctor) and the food translations cover the "top eight" food allergens (milk, wheat, eggs, soy, fish, shellfish, peanuts, and tree nuts) plus gluten and corn. I highly recommend this phrase book for anyone who is traveling with food allergies, intolerances, or a special diet.
Customer Reviews:
Great Guide to Seafood Cooking.......2003-05-02
Like the author of this great book, I love to fish and enjoy preparing my catches for my family and friends. I've had this trusty volume since the mid-80's and still refer to it. It's encyclopedic in scope, covering everything from abalone to eels. I live on the west coast, so most of my experience with the recipes has been with preparing fish found in our waters (tuna, rockfish, shark, swordfish). The recipes in this book go well beyond the basics, yet they are sensible and straightforward to prepare. Using the recipe I found in the book, I made Gravalax Salmon for my family one Christmas after being inspired by a business trip to Sweden; the results were great, and all of the ingredients were things that I already had in my cupboards. This is in contrast to many current cookbooks whose recipes seem to be comprised of a long list of the exotic and hard-to-find. I'd strongly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fish!
