Book Description
Many months have passed since the cataclysmic Battle of Mount Hyjal, where the demonic Burning Legion was banished from Azeroth forever. But now, a mysterious energy rift within the mountains of Kalimdor propels three former warriors into the distant past -- a time long before orcs, humans or even high elves roamed the land. A time when the Dark Titan Sargeras, and his demon pawns persuaded Queen Azshara and her Highborne to cleanse Azeroth of its lesser races. A time when the Dragon Aspects were at the height of their power -- unaware that one of their own would soon usher in an age of darkness that would engulf the world of...War Craft®.
In the first chapter of this epic trilogy, the outcome of the historic War of the Ancients is forever altered by the arrival of three time-lost heroes: Krasus, the dragon mage whose great power and memories of the ancient conflict have inexplicably diminished; the human wizard Rhonin, whose thoughts are divided between his family and the seductive source of his now-growing power; and Broxigar, a weathered orc veteran who seeks a glorious death in combat. But unless these unlikely allies can convince the demigod, Cenarius, and the untrusting night elves of their queen's treachery, the burning Legion's gateway into Azeroth will open anew. And this time -- the struggles of the past may well spill over into the future...

Great Start.......2007-08-09
THis book is the first of a trilogy. I highly recommend that if you read this book, you commit to reading the other two. This gives an excellent historical view of how the World of Warcraft evolved over time and how relationships developed, both good and bad.
I don't get it .......2007-06-18
Ok, I have to admit it as much as I wanted to like this book considering the rave reviews I had heard and read hear on Amazon I did not like the story. I don't know if I just wasn't in the right mood or what. The quality of the writing is still there and that is usually enough for me but not this time. Can we break some new ground here or tell some new stories instead of telling an alternate version of a story that all diehard Warcraft people know? This probably has something to do with the fact that this book was written by the same guy who wrote Day of the Dragon a book I liked at first but didn't like quite so much on subsequent rereads.
Overall-Read it if you are a dragon fan who wants to be confused about the overall war craft timeline. There was also a time when I would buy the rest of the trilogy and make an attempt to read the books out of loyalty to the franchise that is not going to happen with there books.
Excellent reading complelling story line!!!.......2007-06-08
As usual all fantasy books begin with a bland fisrt chapter however after this point the story really takes off. I finished this book in record time considering im not usually an avid reader.
If you are a fan of warcraft lore and want to know the background to the evolving characters of the warcraft universe. I suggest starting with this book. I tuned page after page night after night, great work by Knakk
5/5
The Well of Eternity (WarCraft: War of the Ancients, Book 1).......2007-05-12

Great Read...........2006-11-06
I really liked this book. For any who read the "Day of the Dragon" book by Richard Knaak and liked it, you'll love this one. It has some of the old gang and some new folks as well as some people from the WC3 game. It's an easy read and I'd say a must have for any Warcraft Lore fanatics. If you wanna know how what became what this is definately a book you'll want.

This is a long, satisfying, commanding novel of the soldiers who were poised on the brink of real manhood when World War II flung them unceremoniously into that abyss. Private Robert E. Lee Prewitt is the nonconformist hero who refuses to box at Schofield Barracks and is slowly destroyed by his own rebelliousness. Around him, others are fighing their own small battles--and losing. It's worth noting that Jones' 1951 audience was shocked by his frank language and the sexual preoccupations of his characters.
Book Description
Diamond Head, Hawaii, 1941. Pvt. Robert E. Lee Prewitt is a champion welterweight and a fine bugler. But when he refuses to join the company's boxing team, he gets "the treatment" that may break him or kill him. First Sgt. Milton Anthony Warden knows how to soldier better than almost anyone, yet he's risking his career to have an affair with the commanding officer's wife. Both Warden and Prewitt are bound by a common bond: the Army is their heart and blood . . .and, possibly, their death.
In this magnificent but brutal classic of a soldier's life, James Jones portrays the courage, violence and passions of men and women who live by unspoken codes and with unutterable despair. . .in the most important American novel to come out of World War II, a masterpiece that captures as no ther the honor and savagery of men.
From the Paperback edition.
Customer Reviews:
It gradually earned my affection..........2007-08-12
From Here to Eternity is a singular reading experience: gritty, raucous, desperate, raw and, yet, ultimately sublime. James Jones fields a superb cast of characters with which relatively few novels can compete. More than once, it reminded me of Catch 22 (without the intended absurdity) - Pianosa set down in a peaceful Hawaii just prior to Pearl Harbor.
Distractingly, there are times when the author is guilty of pontification. There are stretches which seem entirely gratuitous. The two protagonists, Prewitt and Warden, elsewise dynamic, can wax numbingly philosophic. But, by the middle of the book I was captive to a steadily mounting anticipation, the culmination of which plays out true to form - recklessly, brutally as the soldiers of G Company ready themselves for war.
There is a quality of novel which can best be described by the wistfulness with which one completes it. I was sorry to see this one end. Despite the violence, hard living, bravado and despair, James Jones concludes with hope and endurance. Like Herman Wouk's Winds of War and War and Remembrance, From Here to Eternity is a classic among WWII literature. 5 stars.
A read that seared me right down to the bone..........2007-07-05
In my humble uneducated opinion, this book is superior to the film as is usually the case. But the movie is STILL a classic, so don't get preturbed at me for sayin' that. It's by and large one'a my favorites, but you don't get the FULL impact of James Jones' story unless you read this book. And while it is LONG as hell, it's worth it. I'll be honest, I was so intimidated by it, I bought it and didn't touch it for a year; I'd never even ATTEMPTED a book that was 800-plus, but when I finally got up the courage, I was hooked by the third chapter. Of course, like most people my age, I had the preconceived notion of how I viewed the characters from the movie, but, trust me, that doesn't water down the incredible impact of the way the book unfolds; it clings more to tragedy and despair than the film, and truly encapsulates Jones' theory that the world stops to mourn no man. He puts you right there for everything; the corruption, the favoritism, the "treatment", the hookers, and many other controversial, politically incorrect topics that the mere mention in this review would be censored. Fifty some years after its first publication the book still feels scandalous. The stockade scenes for instance which were only briefly implied in the film are brutal to read.
But what's really REALLY great is the way Jones puts you in the mind of each and every character, even the ones we're supposed to despise, like Sgt. Galovitch or Dynamite Holmes, making it not so "black and white" like the film was (literally and figuratively). Everyone is a human being, whether in the corridors of power or in the messhall cleaning; there is no true villain; characters you latch on to will more than likely do something or say something to enrage you at least once or twice before the book is over; they're all flawed human beings confused and uncertain about their place in Uncle Sam's army. This book is a real, unflinching, highly critical and uncompromising view of the United States Army and Infantry told from the views of the young faceless men serving at the bottom end; accounts which aren't heard nearly enough.
But the most gut-wrenching part to me deals with a secondary character; the long drawn-out scene of Isaac Bloom considering his options before his tragic end. That scene brought real true-to-life tears into my eyes which hasn't been brought to me by a book in a long time. Anyone looking for a deep, involved, beautifully harsh an' thought-provoking read that shows you the pain and indifference prevalent in the life of the modern man, look no further.
awesome.......2007-05-12
GREAT SERVICE. EXACTLY WHAT THE DESCRIPTION SAID. WOULD BY FROM THEM AGAIN!!
Epic novel of army life........2007-01-24
This is a great book about gritty army life, pre-WWII. Don't expect any combat, the Pearl Harbor attack doesn't come until the end and there's not a whole lot about it. Read this for a first-hand account of what being a "sojer" was like in the peace-time army in Hawaii. Boozing, fighting, gambling, shack-jobs, whorehouses, and mundane army drills and duties.
10 star book.......2007-01-01
The greatest of World War II novels. Maybe the greatest novel I've ever read. A complete reading experience with a range of characters male to female that make you wonder how anyone could have written it. Magnificent. Up there with: Brothers K. An American Tragedy.

A Collection From The Golden Age.......2005-02-26
Another good collection of stories from the 1940's and early 1950's, edited by John W. Campbell Jr.. The 23 stories included were all published originally in "Astounding Science Fiction" between May of 1940 and March of 1951. This anthology was published in 1952.
In comparing it with the other anthologies, such as those edited by Groff Conklin, it falls short in a couple of areas. The first is that there are fewer stories included, which isn't a big problem since the quality is very high. The second is that many of the stories included had already appeared in other collections prior to this one. However, for those who don't already have those collections, this is a good place to start.
The list of authors reads like a who's who of science fiction from the period, and many of the stories are classics. The list of stories is: "Blowups Happen" by Robert A. Heinlein, "Hindsight" by Jack Williamson, "Vault Of The Beast" by A. E. van Vogt, "The Exalted" by L. Sprague De Camp, "Nightfall" by Isaac Asimov, "When The Bough Breaks" by Lewis Padgett, "Clash By Night" by Lawrence O'Donnell, "Invariant" by John R. Pierce, "First Contact" by Murray Leinster, "Meihem In Ce Klasrum" by Dolton Edwards, "Hobbyist" by Eric Frank Russell, "E For Effort" by T. L. Sherred, "Child's Play" by William Tenn, "Thunder And Roses" by Theodore Sturgeon, "Late Night Final" by Eric Frank Russell", "Cold War" by Kris Neville, "Eternity Lost" by Clifford D. Simak, "The Witches Of Karres" by James H. Schmitz, "Over The Top" by Lester del Rey, "Meteor" by William T. Powers, "Last Enemy" by H. Beam Piper, "Historical Note" by Murray Leinster, and "Protected Species" by H. B. Fyfe.
The anthology as a whole, was ranked 16th by readers on the Astounding/Analog All-Time Poll for books in 1952, and it moved up to 8th on the same poll taken in 1956. In 1999, it was tied for 17th on the Locus All-Time Poll for anthologies.
Of the stories within, Asimov's "Nightfall" was rated 1st on the Astounding/Analog All-Time Poll for short fiction in 1971, and 2nd on the Locus Poll in 1999 for novelettes. Leinster's "First Contact" tied for 9th on the Astounding/Analog All-Time Poll for short fiction in 1971, and won the Retro Hugo for best novelette in 1996 for the year 1945. Piper's "Last Enemy" was nominated for the Retro Hugo for best novella in 2001 for the year 1950.

God spoke to me and this is what he said! Do you ever wonder why bad things happen? Why did my child die? Why did a hurricane kill so many people? Why did I lose my job? I must be joking, let me prove it to you! In 'The Game of Life', I will answer the question, why? I will reveal the true purpose for each experience you go through. I will use my life as an illustration to show you the veil of darkness and demonstrate to you the battle between good versus evil. More importantly, I will explain why the game is about to end! Yes, the clock is ticking down to the very last second! Are you playing your 'Game of Life' to win?
Customer Reviews:
Very, very impressive.......2006-08-11
I think it took a lot of guts for an upholster to write a book like this. I was very impressed that someone without any experience could write so well. The editing may not have been perfect, but I don't think the "Divine" expects perfection (which the book is very clear about). Anyone expecting God to edit His own work is just plain ridiculous. The content was extremely enlightening, and definitely God sent. I hope this author continues to write, I think she has an important message.
This needs edited badly. .......2006-08-11
Just on the back cover of this book, there are six errors of spelling, punctuation, and usage. If this book was truly from the Divine, surely He would edit his work. The fluidity of reading this book was sketchy at best, and positively rambling at worst. In order to affect people, a book must be tightly edited; that demands respect. I think winning the game of life must not require these demands, but reading the book does.
It filled me with confidence.......2006-08-07
My father died last year . He was my best friend. After reading this book I stopped blaming God and I started praising his name. Now I know that my life has meaning even if I can't talk to my dad and receive the encouragement that I need to live. Now I feel like I can let go of the past and march forward with confidence so I can win my game of life just like my dad won his.
Great book!.......2006-08-02
Demons and angels, self-writing typewriters, elaborate games. You have to read it for yourself. There is not a dull moment.
Best book ever! .......2006-08-02
Best book ever! I am raising three kids, who are three and under. This book helped me deal with the frustration and loneliness of motherhood by encouraging me not to be so hard on myself. I realized that as long as I was doing my best, that was good enough, and I would succeed the tasks God had set out for me.

A moving story of real heroes........2005-10-04
This is a well-written story about the real-life heroes of the USS Liscome Bay. It is both very sad in its horrific loss and truly inspiring in its heroism. Our young people should read this to understand the fidelity and the devotion to duty that exemplified our grandparent's generation.
A Must Read.......2004-10-15
The heroic story of the men of the USS Liscome Bay told in novel-like fashion by author James Noles. I would rank this book up there with the likes of Flags of Our Fathers, and Ghost Soldiers. I guarantee the reader will not be able to put it down.
Salute to Twenty-Three Minutes to Eternity.......2004-05-24
James Noles has written an outstanding tribute to the men of the USS Liscome Bay. Twenty-Three Minutes is a must read for anyone interested in World War II or naval history. The book covers the tale of the USS Liscome Bay, from the necessity driven decision to commission these vulnerable escort carriers, to the ship's tragic sinking in November 1943 with a staggering 644 hands. Through gripping narration, Noles details a horror and heroism that has largely been overlooked by historians. Twenty-Three Minutes reads like fiction; so much so, you won't be able to put it down. I salute the men of the Liscome Bay, and James Noles for telling their story. I highly recommend this book.

Tibor, a Hungarian eco-activist, has some shocking news for the residents of the West African village of Nunsa: they are at the centre of a new Bermuda Triangle, in which industrial pollution, AIDS and terrorism combine to create an environment from which no man may escape alive. In Hungary, Tibor has problems - a frustrated girlfriend, a wayward brother and the mysterious whereabouts of his mother's corpse - but these are dwarfed by the daunting mission he undertakes in Africa. Tibor becomes a messiah figure to the villagers, the 'strange white man', and leads them in a struggle against global industry. Faced with ignorance, corruption and assassination plots, Tibor must adopt increasingly extreme methods. But how far is he prepared to go in his campaign of terror? Is terrorism the only means of change in the twenty-first century? And will even that be enough to prevent the ultimate threat to all living creatures, the death of eternity?

Chef Christopher Kump's cooking ranges from mashed-potatoes homey to black-truffle haute. Thanks to Evening Food, you can enjoy both sides of the intensely flavorful dishes he serves without trekking to Cafe Beaujolais in Mendocino, California, where he works his magic. For a cozy dinner menu, serve Roasted Eggplant Tapenade Tart, followed by Roast Chicken with creamy Fish Ginger Sauce accompanied by Chive Mashed Potatoes, then finish with the nut-topped Pear and Apple Crisp. For a feast with luxe, Kump might recommend Sautéed Duck Foie Gras with Garlic Confit Purée, Oven-steamed Salmon Filet with Fresh Herb Sabayon Sauce (whose lemongrass seasoning gives new life to a classic), and his surprising Lemon-Chocolate Mousse for dessert.
In addition to the collection of mouthwatering recipes, Kump and Margaret Fox, Kump's wife and owner of Cafe Beaujolais, chat about their life, share anecdotes about the dishes, and provide information about ingredients and cooking techniques, such as how to remove pesky pin bones from a salmon filet using tweezers. Black-and-white photos illustrate the attraction of this little restaurant with world-class food, located in a remote, New-England-on-the-Pacific town. --Dana Jacobi
Customer Reviews:
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!.......2005-04-26
Throughout the book, the author stresses that he didn't have room for his very best recipes, but that, for $20 (I think) you can order them from him. I tried to, but the address cited was that of Cafe Beaujolais, and they replied with "Sorry, he moved." They won't even forward such mail. So it was a total waste. There are tons of great cookbooks on the market; purchase those that try to include their best recipes.
Comfortable, Yet Sophisticated Wine Country Food.......2003-11-20
Coming from quite a pedigree (son of Peter Kump and having worked with the likes of Robuchonn and Jacques Cagna) the young chef is hired and then marries the ownder of Cafe Beujolais.
Margaret Fox has produced books on this restaurants Morning Food and another, and here collaborates with her chef/husband on Evening Recipes.
Organized into classic dining sequence of Appetizers to Desserts, there are some good recipes in here to try: Buckwheat Hazelnut Bread; Toasted Goat Cheese Salad; Pear and Apple Crisp; Bittersweet Chocolate Raspberry Milefeuilles; and a Roast Cornish Hen with Apricot Marsala Sauce that is superb!
What I enjoy about this is the sidebar discussion that accompanies each recipe. Here is told about its development, technique, tips, etc.
Customer Reviews:
Morning Food.......2000-04-27
I have read many cookbooks that are bone dry and boring, like a chemistry textbook. This isn't the case with "Morning Food". Fox presents her recipes and anecdotes with warmth and humor. No matter the time of day this book puts you in the mood for breakfast. The coffee cakes are heavenly!
Recipes in this book help you recall Mendocino moments.......1999-03-12
Written with wit and wisdom, MORNING FOOD helps cooks of all skill levels recreate some of the wonderful tastes of Margaret Fox's charming Mendocino restaurant, Cafe Beaujolais. The restaurant is one of the many wonderful reasons people from all over Northern California--and the world--brave slow and twisty roads that hug the cliffs and hillsides overlooking the Pacific Ocean north of San Francisco.
The food detailed in Margaret Fox's book is both simple and complex. Freshness is the keynote here, but creating with what you have available is important, too.
If you enjoy reading cookbooks for pleasure or simply want a "how-to" list of recipes, you will be pleased with MORNING FOOD.
Breakfast and brunch lovers, look no further!.......1998-05-31
Having been a huge fan of the author for years, I couldn't wait to jump into this book. The recipes are consistently delicious and impressive. Her cinnamon rolls and bread are simply unparalleled! If you love to entertain in the morning or simply want incredibly tasty breakfast/brunch recipes you must read this book. I must also say that her writing style is so enjoyable...readable, witty and unpretentious. The book is full of little anecdotes about life in Mendocino and running a restaurant. Check it Out!!
Customer Reviews:
This is a great book.......2004-08-16
I bought this back in the '80's and have used it continually since. It will always be one of my favorite cookbooks. You cannot loose with this book.
Fabulous guest-tested recipes. Delightful commentary........2004-04-18
Perfect for your cookbook library. Perfect as a special gift.
This intelligently written cookbook features homey, tasty recipes made with ingredients Americans ordinarily have in their kitchens. It uses those ingredients with an eye to twicking the recipes to make them particularly good, yet simple to make. The very best gingerbread recipe I've ever made, and have made over and over as begged-for holiday gifts, at p. 208, is made with fresh-grated ginger. You must try it. The cookbook has helpful commentaries/stories with each recipe that explain their sources and special aspects and that improve your understanding of preparation. These recipes have evidentially been extensively tested and improved to the point of perfection. It is the one cookbook I have had on my shelfing above my kitchen sink for the last 15 years along with my customized recipes.
yummmmmy.......2001-08-25
The recipes in this book are great, especially the tomato soup and chicken salad (Chinese). I really liked the simple way in which they were written and the use of readily available ingredients. My favorite part of the book was all the minutae about the restaurant itself. From starting a restaurant, to running it, to buying provisions, to personnel, the book was a fascinating inside look at the business of food. The authors never complained, but they made me realize what a tough business they are in. Hope I can visit Cafe Beaujolais sometime.
My favorite cookbook on the shelf!.......2000-06-22
I spent a lovely weekend on the coast and happened upon CAFE BEAUJOLAIS. After a splended meal, I purchased an autographed copy of this book. The recipes are all easy to follow and each have a history or source. Her spicy buttermilk coffee cake is to die for! Ms. Fox speaks of her cookbook collection and how she "looks up" the same recipe in many different cookbooks. This is where I first understood the concept of recipe comparing. I also enjoyed reading about the goings-on in her resturant. This is a fabulous book!
I've worn out my first copy of cafe beaujolais.......2000-02-08
This is my one book that i go to again, and again and again. Everything in it from Chinese Chicken Salad to Mom's Banana Cake is scrumptious. It's hard to say what is my favorite - I guess they all are. You are missing out if you don't have this book. You won't be sorry; not to mention that simple instructions, simple ingredients, wonderful for the novice cook and then some. ENJOY!
