Healthy, vibrant skin depends more on what you put in your cheeks than what you rub on them, says dermatologist Nicholas Perricone. In The Perricone Prescription, fresh salmon tops the list of must-eat foods for total body rejuvenation. In fact, it is the star of Perricone's "Three-Day Nutritional Face-Lift," a convincing trial run for those who are a bit hedgy about committing to his 28-day diet and his supplement, skin care, and exercise regimen.
Perricone's clear explanation about the adverse effects of inflammatory foods persuasively argues for shunning destructive, low-fat favorites (including watermelon, carrots, and bagels) and "culinary horrors" like pizza, pasta, and beef. Better to eat anti-inflammatory choices (those with a glycemic index of 50 or less) like salmon, halibut, and trout. While the book's mega list of recommended supplements is a bit hard to swallow (literally and figuratively), the supportive information Perricone supplies about each is certainly helpful.
Another detailed grocery list--this time for topical anti-inflammatories--addresses skin care, and his wrinkle-free fitness plan promotes flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance. Finally, a handful of savory recipes offers respite to those who only know how to broil. So, despite all the salmon (and the angry kids whose parents have purged their high-glycemic kitchens), Perricone's prescription doesn't sound fishy at all. --Liane Emory Thomas
Book Description
Now in a stunning trade paperback edition that includes a new bonus chapter, the instant #1 New York Times bestseller The Perricone Prescription is the dramatically effective, total body anti–aging program that includes an easy–to–follow exercise, diet, and skin–care regimen for people of all ages.
We generally believe that lines and wrinkles are an unavoidable part of the aging process. According to Dr. Nicholas V. Perricone, they are actually due to "inflammation" caused by poor nutrition, pollution, sunlight, irritating skin care treatments, and stress. In fact, this type of inflammation is more than just a beauty problem. The production of free radicals that damage the cells and organs in the body also increases the likelihood of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and arthritis.
The good news is, the Perricone Prescription Program can prevent and even reverse these problems. The program will not only produce visible improvement in the skin, it will improve your body's overall health and appearance. Dr. Perricone has developed his own skin care products and recommends other products he believes will help to improve skin tone. By following the Perricone Program of diet, topical creams, vitamins, and exercise, you can dramatically reduce lines and wrinkles and achieve a younger look within three days. You will look and feel better than you ever thought possible. Good health and beautiful skin–an unbeatable combination.

Amazing help for skin and health.......2007-10-01
The Perricone PrescriptionIf you want easy, natural ways to improve your skin and overall health, this is the author to look for. The changes are simple and readily available.
The Perricone Prescription.......2007-08-16
Use this book if you need motivation to lose weight and feel better. I quit drinking coffee and soda, now I drink water and green tea and added the supplements recommended. I use this book to improve my lifestyle long term. The price is worth buying on Amazon over the book stores, it was way cheaper. Enjoy!
Interesting theory...ultimately just conjecture.......2007-06-05
This was an interesting read, but ulitmately I found that the author doesn't really provide any evidence to back up what he says.
HUh?.......2007-05-07
I thought this book would be great because he's a doctor & has such great skin himself. I ended up throwing this book away. He doesn't do any kind of systematic research he just takes before & after pictures of these ladies & uses positive adjectives to describe the "after" photo, even though *I* think some them looked better before. The diet is way too complex & villifies foods that are perfectly healthy. I would recommend just eating off the food pyramid - those recommendations are supported by actual research. This guy is making a million bucks selling books & products with claims that I *doubt* would be endorsed by any medical or scientific community. Go figure.
Great Plan for Healthy Living.......2007-01-04
I initially borrowed this book from the library and decided to buy it because it is such a good reference. I really like the whole approach with healthy eating complemented by supplements contribute to weight loss and improved skin. The explanations are very detailed but understandable, which helped me to stick to the program which has actually evolved into a lifestyle for me. I do believe the advice provided will contribute to reducing my risk of heart disease and cancer while giving me immediate payback of better skin and weight loss. My skin is truly more attractive with fewer, or less deep, wrinkles (I'm a 53 year old woman)and I do feel more energetic. I also purchased Perricone's Weight-loss Diet which continues along the same line but with a deeper focus upon weight loss.

A Publisher's Weekly Bestseller:
Most people believe that sags, bags, and wrinkles -- on the face and body -- are inevitable. many people choose to temporarily circumvent these signs of aging with surgery, chemical peels, Botox injections, or laser treatments. The good news, according to research scientist and practicing dermatologist Nicholas Perricone, M.D., is that by following a simple program of diet, exercise, and skin care you can prevent and even reverse many signs of aging.
The Perricone Prescription clearly and succinctly explains the rock-solid laboratory research behind Dr. Perricone's revolutionary theories, revealing that inflammation at the cellular level, precipitated by poor nutrition, pollution, sunlight, irritating skin-care treatments, and stress, is the single most powerful cause of the signs of aging. Dr. Perricone gives you the knowledge and the tools to fight that inflammation from the inside out, while at the same time decreasing the likelihood of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and a host of other degenerative diseases.

WINNER OF 7 MAJOR AWARDS
James Beard Award, Veuve Clicquot; Wine Book of the Year, DECANTER Magazine; Wine Book of the Year, Finalist; Andre Simon Wine Book of the Year
"From the Unseen Darkness where the vineroots suck, where the liquid in your glass is teased out of the soil." So states Hugh Johnson in explaining the importance of soils, "the terroir" that the French have long praised as the secret to great wines. Years of meticulous research now reveal the relationship between rocks and grapes. A natural history of the little known facts and anecdote woven into the compelling tale of how geology influences the choice of grapes, style and quality. A master geologist describes each rock type and soil and the way structure affects the absorption of vital nutrients. Using instruments and techniques developed for oil exploration, Wilson learned more about vineyards and quality than winemakers ever dreamed!

Book Description
The French word terroir is used to describe all the ecological factors that make a particular type of wine special to the region of its origin. James E. Wilson uses his training as a geologist and his years of research in the wine regions of France to fully examine the concept of terroir. The result combines natural history, social history, and scientific study, making this a unique book that all wine connoisseurs and professionals will want close at hand.
In Part One Wilson introduces the full range of environmental factors that together form terroir. He explains France's geological foundation; its soil, considered the "soul" of a vineyard; the various climates and microclimates; the vines, their history and how each type has evolved; and the role that humans--from ancient monks to modern enologists--have played in viticulture.
Part Two examines the history and habitat of each of France's major wine regions. Wilson explores the question of why one site yields great wines while an adjacent site yields wines of lesser quality. He also looks at cultural influences such as migration and trade and at the adaptations made by centuries of vignerons to produce distinctive wine styles.
Wilson skillfully presents both technical information and personal anecdotes, and the book's photographs, maps, and geologic renderings are extremely helpful. The appendices contain a glossary and information on the labeling of French wines. With a wealth of information explained in clear English, Wilson's book enables wine readers to understand and appreciate the mystique of terroir.
Customer Reviews:
All you ever wanted to know about wine and geology in France.......2005-08-28
This is an amazing book. I first encountered it in the library of a tour barge through Burgundy in France. I learned so much about the "terroir" of the burgundian wines that I ordered a copy for myself as soon as I got home. If you ever wanted to know just what the French mean by the word "terroir" as applied to wines, then this is the book for you. Wilson combines the geology, geography, wine variaties and even a bit of history for every major and even minor wine region of France. There is an introduction that introduces the major geological and wine terms used in the book. After that, you can go to any section (Burgundy, Bordeaux, Rhone, etc.) and discover just how the mixtures of soil, climate, geography, and the underlying geology interact to produce the distinctive wines of France.
A text for geologists, not wine lovers.......2003-02-08
Do not buy this book if you are expecting an easy read, perhaps expanding on the "terroir" writings of Matt Kramer of Wine Spectator fame.
This book spends little space discussing the actual liquid that in contained within a wine bottle. What you get instead is an in depth examination of the geology which causes differences in the finished product. The feeling that the "product" is wine, seems to have no joy to the author. To me, that is what ruins this book. I get the feeling that if the author would have had as much enthusiasm writing upon the impact of different wavelengths of light on the lima bean.
Not that this book didn't accomplish what the author set out to do. Just know what you are buying.
Misadvertised.......2001-04-08
"Terroir" by Wilson is a very good book, indeed. Johnson, however, has very little to do with it; he just wrote the foreword, which he does to so many books. Wilson's book is comparable to the older "The Wines and Winelands of France, Geological Journeys" by Charles Pomerol, 1989, English language edition, a much more cut-n-dried account of much the same territory. Both are excellent sources of information for people like teachers and people who wish to gain some intellectual as well as sensory pleasure out of their vinous beverages.
Good geology, not a good title.......2001-03-07
With a great anticipation I bought this book at the time when I was doing my PhD on terroir. To some extent, the book was a disappointment. Geology really represents only one element of terroir. Scientific evidence that would relate parent rock composition / structure to wine quality is non-existent. It is, as lawyers would say, circumstantial, not direct evidence. The role that soil type and local climate, as well as vineyard management and winemaking practices play in shaping up terroir is greatly undermined in this book. The impressive work on terroir done at INRA (the National Institute of Agronomic Research) in France by Barbeau, Asselin, Morlat and others is basically ignored. These scientists (as well as my own research) have found that physical properties of soil and subsoil, as well as local climate, are the most important factors defining terroir. However, this book does have excellent maps and a wealth of geological and regional information - so it is worth every penny on that account only. The only problem is that, in my opinion, the title is wrong. "Geology of the French vineyards", or something similar, would describe the book's content much more precisely.
A geologist's opinion.......2000-05-19
I guess I was already a believer when I ordered the book, but reading it has confirmed my suspicions that terroir is a very real contributor to what makes a good vineyard capable of producing a great wine. Wilson idolizes the vigneron, and in many ways the human touch is a part of terroir, as much as the soil profile, the microclimate etc.
The graphics and sidebars in this book are superb. As a practising geologist I appreciate the details but feel confident that a layman will find the book just as interesting and informative. Wilson has a sense of purpose, a sense of humor and a sense of history which all in all provide for a good read.
He has inspired me to make a study of the terroirs of Texas viticulture but I doubt if the results would ever be published in such a fine form as this book.
Book Description
There is a saying among winemakers that "great wine begins with dirt." Beginning from this intriguing premise, The Winemaker's Dance embarks on an eye-opening exploration of "terroir" in one of the greatest places on earth to grow wine--California's Napa Valley. Jonathan Swinchatt and David G. Howell weave a tale that begins millions of years ago with the clash of continental plates that created the Napa Valley and go on to show how this small region, with its myriad microclimates, complex geologic history, and dedicated winemakers, came to produce world-class wines. A fascinating look at the art and science of winemaking and the only comprehensive book that covers Napa's geology, history, and environment, The Winemaker's Dance will help wine enthusiasts better understand wine talk and wine writing and, most importantly, wine itself.
The Winemaker's Dance is animated by the voices of Napa's winemakers talking about their craft. The book also contains two driving tours through the valley that highlight the landscapes and wineries discussed. An array of unique illustrations--including shaded relief maps overlaid with color aerial photographs--provide a new and illuminating look at the region: its bedrock, sediments, soils, sun, wind, and rain. The expansive narrative considers how these elements influence wines from particular vineyards and how specific winemaking practices can bring out or mask aspects of terroir. It concludes with a discussion of the state of the winemaking industry today.
Unraveling the complex relationship between the people, the earth, and the vines of Napa Valley, The Winemaker's Dance brings the elusive concept of terroir to a broad audience, adding a vibrant dimension to the experience of the valley's wines. It also provides insights that enhance our understanding of wines and winegrowing regions the world over.
Customer Reviews:
Good background book.......2007-08-10
I have a farm near Napa county and was interested in assessing the suitablity of the farm for growing wine grapes. This book has a lot of
interesting information in it. It is especially suitable for someone interested in agriculture who will be visiting Napa county - there are
probably far more people in that category than there are people
interested in growing wine grapes.
For my purposes I would have liked to see a summary table or listing of wineries, wine price, type(s) of grapes grown, soil conditions, soil water retention, elevation, slope, sunlight orientation, and perhaps native vegetation on the soil. It was a bit hard to get this information since it was scattered throughout the book and there were usually just a few factors mentionned when specific wineries were discussed.
Great for the Wino-Geologist, but needs to address water for sustainability.......2007-04-17
I came across this title on a search for D. Howell's work, and then found a cheap copy on eBay. I'm fortunate to live down the street from River Run Winery (check him out on the web)in the eastern Pajaro Valley, and have always wondered about the influence of San Benito County soils and geolgy where the RR winemaker gets his grapes. This Napa valley primer is an excellent intro on the topic and will get the 'geo-juices' flowing for research in my own backyard. See also SOILS FOR FINE WINES by White.
The problem of ground water over-draft was skirted in this book. Any talk of sustainability in CA's wine country --as one finds in the final chapter of this title --will have to be honest about this issue, regardless of drip irrigation, or the perfect grape. I'd like these authors to cover what impacts on geohydrology the wine industry has had in the Napa valley in a revised edition. And perhaps the impact of global climate change on Napa's GW and its vineyards.
Geeky but Great.......2005-08-18
A thorough and valiant attempt at trying to define "terroir" in one of the world's great winegrape growing regions.
I liked the book a lot more than I thought I would--it starts with the soils and geologic makeup, goes into climate, viticulture, and then tries to bundle it with how the grape growers and winemakers coax great fruit out of all of it.
Fabulous maps and graphics. Worth the price for this alone.
Terroir is a very difficult topic to get ones head around and I really appreciate the authors' work. A lot closer than you get from talking to grape growers and wine makers. (I have been an amateur winemaker for over 10 years, so I really appreciated the clarity of their approach.)
The Winemaker's Dance: Exploring Terroir in the Napa Valley.......2005-06-07
yes, this book can not tell you everything about the wine, but at least, this book does provide a basic knowledge of relationship between terroir and the character of wine. If readers who are really interested in wine and terroir, you might buy another book called" Terroir, The Role Geology, Climate, and Culture in the Making of French Wine." by James E. Wilson.
Winemaker's Wisdon - a fusion of science and intuition.......2005-02-14
This is a wonderful book for someone interested in an understanding of the complexities and nuances of creating good wine. After reading it I have a deep appreciation for the forces brought together by the winemaker. The Napa Valley and what it produces are certainly uniquely American treasures.
The authors begin by explaining the winemaker's dance as "an engagement with land, vine, and human understanding that is fundamental to understanding the relationship of terroir and wine". What follows delves into each aspect of the dance in exquisite and enjoyable detail.
Initially I thought I'd be overwhelmed by the scientific details of the geological formation of the Napa Valley, however, the combination of wonderful graphics, diagrams, maps and descriptions resulted in not only an understanding of Napa, but a greater understanding of geology in general. The authors move us through a history of the forces that created the major structures of the valley up to the resultant influences on soil and the particular issues that concern winemakers. Despite being geologists, the authors have a keen respect for the limitations of scientific information and are quick to point out the limitations and resultant assumptions.
Understanding more of the geologic history of the Valley allows one to understand the importance of site selection by the grape growers and winemakers. Rock, soil, sun, wind direction and temperature as well as other details of place and earth are critical in deciding what and where to plant.
The second half of the book brings into focus the amazingly complex work of growing excellent grapes and then harvesting and handling them to produce excellent wine. For me it suggests that the best winemakers need a fusion of both masculine/feminine, linear/intuitive capacities. One could know everything about the science of winemaking and fail without having a feel for timing, smell and taste. No wonder some of Napa's best winemakers are women.
The book contains some tasty bonuses including two tours of the Napa Valley and it's wineries, and quick-read boxes explaining such things as the tannin effect. For readers who love well-produced books, the quality of paper, color and print style make this one a treat to touch and see. The authors' writing style is also quite enjoyable with freguent use of surprising similes and metaphors.
Finally, a major benefit to me as a novice wine taster is the message to trust my own taste rather than relying on the "experts". And, to find a good wine store with knowledgeable staff to help you through the process of exploration.

Stunning visual images.......2007-07-14
I just got my copy of this beautiful book, and I couldn't put it down. As I viewed each gorgeous photograph, I couldn't wait to turn the page to see the next. Rose's stunning visual images bring the wine country alive, even for those who are not lucky enough to live there. Rod Smith's lovely prose is an appropriate accompaniment to the pictures, but even without the text, the photos tell a story all on their own. Like a fine wine, the memories of the pictures lingered in my mind long after I closed the book. Unlike my other coffee-table books, once my guests open the pages of this book, they simply cannot put it down until they get to the last page.
Book Description
"The vine and its wine are a great mystery. Only the vine reveals to us what is the real taste of the earth," writes Colette. In this sumptuously illustrated and wonderfully informative book, Jacques Fanet invites us on an entertaining tour of the world's most celebrated winegrowing regions to discover the characteristics of the bond that ties the vine to its place of birth: the terroir. Terroir is a uniquely French term for the subtle interaction of natural factors and human skills that define the characteristics of each winegrowing region.
Interviewing growers and researchers in France, Spain, Italy, California, Chile, Australia, and South Africa, Fanet looks for the soil in the soul of each wine. He takes us back millions of years to show how movements in the ancient bedrock, faults, mountain building, tidal flow, sedimentation, and volcanic activity contribute to the precise and individual character of each terroir, making the great winegrowing regions what they are today. Great Wine Terroirs provides wine enthusiasts with everything they will want to know about different soils and climates, the relationship between international grape varieties and the soil in which they grow, and how these factors affect the taste of the wines.
Color geological illustrations and timelines support the text and explain key phenomena. Fanet also provides a glossary, geographical index, and index of soil types and grape varieties. He explains enological practices and their effect on the terroirs and answers questions such as why the Châteauneuf plateau, almost 300 feet about the Rhône Valley, is surrounded by river alluvia and why there are fossilized oysters in the soils of Chablis. Those interested in the wine of California will find a lively discussion of the Napa Valley, with a detailed explanation of how the San Andreas fault, the Sierra Nevada, and the Great Central Valley have all played a part in creating the most spectacular wine-producing region on the continent.
