Where's New Hugo Winners, Vol V?, It's Been Ten Years Already........2006-08-20
The works presented in this volume are the Hugo Award short-fiction winners in the categories of Short Story, Novelette, and Novella for the years of 1992, 1993, and 1994. The short-fiction works of Short Story/Novelette/Novella as a rough rule of thumb follow 15/30/60 page-lengths, although there have been Short Stories as short as 3 pages, and Novellas as long as 120 pages as some presented here. Hugo Award Winners tend to be more traditional science-fiction/speculative-fiction stories than Nebula Award winners. Meaning that some stories may be a bit old fashioned such as A Walk in the Sun, but then usually tends to avoid awards on lesbianism, magic auras, faery handbags, and other topics that are not science fiction such as what the Nebulas award to.
The stories are:
1992 Short Story: A Walk in the Sun, Geoffrey Landis: a lunar orbiter crash lands on the moon and a survivor struggles to continue to survive.
1992 Novelette: Gold, Isaac Asimov: A writer is persuaded to attempt to convert a story to a screen play.
1992 Novella: Beggars in Spain, Nancy Kress: Best story of the collection. This was eventually expanded into a novel and then a trilogy. A subculture of people arise that no longer depend upon sleep. For younger readers, society's reaction is similar as to the protagonists in the X-Men movies.
1993 Short Story: Even The Queen, Connie Willis: About the horrors of menstruation. After reading this I was asking women, is menstruation the absolutely horrible, soul wrenching experience as this story makes it out to be. Willis tries to make the story tongue-in-cheek. Yeah, right. Willis can write anything she wants, but to give a Hugo to this... This is just the type of story the Nebulas would also give an award to, and naturally they did.
1993 Novelette: The Nutcracker Coup, Janet Kagan: Dealing with the culture of an alien society.
1993 Novella: Barnacle Bill The Spacer, Lucius Shepard: Not a story about a Lensman-like hero, but rather about a shambling character intimidated by everyone.
1994 Short Story: Death on the Nile, Connie Willis: A sort of horror story.
1994 Novelette: Georgia on My Mind, Charles Sheffield: Good adventure story, but ends unfulfilled.
1994 Novella: Down in the Bottomlands, Harry Turtledove: Alternative history story where African nations are nuclear superpowers and a murder mystery ensues in a national park.
A mixed bunch but worth it on the whole.......2000-02-03
This book contains the winners of three of the categories of Hugo awards (novella, novelette and short story) from the years 1992, 1993 and 1994.
Most of the stories here were first published in Asimov's science fiction magazine. Thus, regular subscribers to that will find little new in this collection.
I felt that the three short stories were not particularly good.
The first, "A Walk in the Sun" by Geoffrey Landis is traditional SF involving an astronaut stranded on the Moon. I felt that this could have been written thirty or forty years earlier and, after the first four pages, it was simple to see how the rest of the story would progress.
Only one writer, Connie Willis, featured twice and her two short stories were, for me at least, the weakest in the collection.
While none of them stands out as being exceptionally good, the longer works do manage to redeem the collection. The first novelette, "Gold" by Asimov is not particularly memorable but the other two, "The Nutcracker Coup" and "Georgia on my Mind" together with the three novellas, "Beggars in Spain", "Barnacle Bill the Spacer" and "Down in the Bottomlands" tip the balance.
All five of these were interesting stories in settings ranging from contemporary Earth through space adventure to alien worlds and races. TNC and BiS also had something interesting to say beyond their narrative.
In summary then, a readable book which is worth the price of admission but there are better collections around.
Great collection of science fiction.......1999-10-21
Unless you read the science fiction magazines, you've probably missed these sf stories. This is a great compilation of excellent SF; don't miss it!
Is short fiction dying?.......1998-11-21
I've noticed that even impressive collections like this have no reviewers. I want to think it is because the fact they won Hugos means no further recommendation is required, but that excuse doesn't really wash. Fortunately collectins of big name authors do slightly better, but anthologies like this that contain stories by big name authors aren't being read anymore it seems. Worse Hugo winning stories tend to come from magazines like asimov's, analog, f&sf, & SF Age which all are in decline. On the plus side the Hugo anthologies are generally good reading & I almost wish they did what the Nebulas do i.e. put out yearly collections of their nominees. Since I tend to prefer Hugo nominated stories to Nebula nominated stories I'd jump at it. Oh, well. Interstingly many of the great stories in this collection were first in magazines. Beggars in Spain is especially wonderful, but I bet the others are too. A good thing about anthologies like this is that we live in an age of bloated trilogies so this is a nice step in a different direction. I hope you enjoy this collection and I hope short fiction is in better shape than I think. P.S. If you like short fiction of any stripe give science fiction anthologies a chance, after all s.f. is perhaps the best place for short fiction nowadays.

Great Party Item.......2007-01-11
I loved this book because the recipes are simple, yet it offers some new twists.
Great recipes and great design.......2006-04-11
We've purchased a number of martini and other drink recipe books before coming across this one. One of the best things about this book is its spiral design. It lays flat, which means you don't have to try to hold it open or prop it up while mixing up a drink. Can't tell you how frustrating it is trying to whip up a martini or other stylish drink while trying to hold a book open! This book has great recipes, both old and new, is organized by type of liquor and even gives you ideas for the best glass to serve your masterpieces in. I just purchased another copy to give as a wedding/shower gift for a young couple.
They even got the Singapore Sling right!.......2006-01-16
This bartender guide is both colorful and full of photos. It's not also reasonable organized but has color codes for the different types of drinks (Gin, Vodka, etc.) to make it easy to navigate the cocktails. Also, I was happy to see a bartender guide that has the CORRECT Singapore Sling ingredients listed. So many others don't even have the real one used by the Raffles Hotel in Singapore. One thing that makes sense about this book, is that its spiral bound a real plus!
Thoroughly informative guide for the first-timer or the enthusiast.......2005-09-20
I found a used copy of this book at a local bookstore, and bought it out of sheer curiosity. I knew nothing prior to mixing drinks or even how to use a shaker, and was thoroughly amused at how drinking enthusiasts around the world could come up with 780 unique -- and sometimes downright perverse and ridiculous -- names for the world's finest cocktails.
There are two things that I love about this book -- it's brilliantly arranged as a reference guide, and it's geared for both the entry-level hobbyist and the more experienced enthusiast in mind.
Unlike many other bartender guides that are tiny paperbacks or printed on thicker paper that is harder to flip-through, Salvatore Calabrese's book is built like a true index in mind: it's a hard-cover with spiral-bound pages inside printed on glossy color paper. The 780 drinks are divided into logical categories (brandy, rum, wine, vodka, shooters, punches, nonalcoholic, etc.) and each drink's mixing instructions are designed to be read in less than 30 seconds. As a quick reference, I have not seen a book that is better written with clarity and brevity in mind.
Any book I'm willing to pay for as an introduction into a hobby needs to me interested with the history, the basics on how-tos, and the fine science of becoming an enthusiast. The book's opening chapters cover everything from tools & equipment, glassware, and bar terminology to flavors & garnishes, proper techniques for juicing limes, and how to properly use ice!
Nearly every single recipe includes a brief history as to where the naming scheme caming from, and there's some description to the regional origins of certain spirits and bases as well.
I'm not planning on becoming a professional bartender, but if I were going to, I'd imagine this text would easily be one of the required reads and "keeper" books for someone truly interested in pursuing a long-term education into the fine art of drink mixing.

My favorite cocktail book.......2007-05-19
This book is indispensable! It contains recipes for old-fashioned cocktails (and their history) as well as new "foofy" drinks. I much prefer it over Mr Boston for its variety. I enjoy drinks that are simple and use bitters or aperitifs, and this book has plenty of them! It also includes non-alcoholic drinks for the tee-totaler.
I would recommend this book for anyone looking to build their bar and learn how to make some delicious drinks that go far beyond the boring martini-bar cocktail.
Pros and Cons.......2007-01-24
Pros: Awesome book. Easy to follow. Cheaper than bar-tending sites offer.
Cons: It doesn't have EVERY drink you're looking for, but it has a good enough selection you won't be disappointed.
great book.......2007-01-05
This was a great book. I just wish it had listed the drinks by alcohol ingredients. But overall, I loved it.
Good Drinks Good Fun!.......2005-01-25
This is a good book for people who want to know how to mix drinks and how to mix them well. It also has some non-alcholic mixes for the kids parties and stuff! And the cover is water proof and has a place keeping ribbon too!
Very good!.......2004-06-30
Got this book and was immediately impressed by the loads of recipes. However, there are some good ones missing and some of the recipes are tinkered with a bit (as most are), but that's just nitpicking. Overall an outstanding recipe book! Well worth the price!

good for a second drink mixing book on the shelf.......2001-07-07
entirely old fashioned drinks, many you may have never heard of before. since old fashioned drinks have become trendy lately, more of these recipies are popping up on hip specialty drink lists of lounge bars. don't expect to use any of the latest schnapps with these drinks, and many of them include natural ingredients for flavoring.
be sure to have a modern bartending book for pleasing the crowd, but this should be for secret specialties from years gone by.
Lots of Drinks, but Nothing Modern.......1998-07-17
This book is filled with different drinks, but it seems none of them are made today (in the USA, at least) I recommend buying another book if you plan on being a bartender or serving drinks at home. If bizarre cocktails from the 20s are what your looking for, then buy this book.

Customer Reviews:
pretty dog-on good!!!.......2006-11-10
I really enjoy this book. I'm not much of a drinker, so I had no idea there were so many different types of drinks!!! My goal is to try all of them!!!
Good book.......2006-09-16
Its got tons of drink recipes - only drawback is no pictures, but I have not found that to be a problem.
Missing too many drinks..........2004-10-26
"The Complete Bartender" is far from complete. Even though it looks like a hefty book (560 pages?!), it really leaves out quite a bit.
Of course, all of your standard drinks are included: martinis, margaritas, manhattans, and the like. But there's no recipie for cosmopolitans, apple martinis, or any "dirty" drinks (e.g. b.j.s or sex on the beach). And some of the recipies that are included are questionable at best - wrong at worst. The recipie for a zombie included cherry liquor; while the recipie for kamakazie did not include sweet and sour.
This book also lacks color pictures. If you think your presentation is perfect and you don't need any illustrations, then by all means go out and purchase this book. For most of us, it's helpful to have a few pictures to let us know if we're on the right track. In my opinion, a really good bartending book would illustrate the presentation for each drink.
This book isn't all bad. What it lacks in quality it makes up for in quantity. Despite the sometimes iffy drink recipies, the lack of color pictures, and the noticibal absence of several very popular drinks, it's still got tons of drinks and a helpful glossary that explains what different liquors are. There are some illustrations of the various tools and glasses needed to bartend.
I bought this book in college, thinking it would have every recipie I'd ever want. It's a big enough disappointment that I wouldn't really recommend it, but you do have to keep in mind that - with the internet - it's pretty easy to get just about any recipie you'd ever want for a drink. So if you're willing to look up the occasional drink, and you don't need pretty color pictures, this book might be right for you.
Good to have on hand.......2004-04-06
This book has tons of drinks and recipes. Tells you how to make exotic drinks , nonalchoholic drinks, low calorie drinks and many more. It also gives handy tips on how to toast , throw a party, even the proper way to pop champagne. Has 100's of good recipes and is very informative. Recomended.
Definately should be spiral bound.......2002-01-15
Like others, I too would agree that this book should be spiral bound. It is rather difficult to mix a drink and try keep the book open. Even with that said, this is a great book with tons of recipies! Before I bought this book I didn't know how to make any mixed drinks and now I do. This book is not only great for bartenders, but anyone who likes to drink or have friends over for a night of fun. I highly recommend this book.
Book Description
An illustrated celebration of libation.
While mixed drinks have a long history, the cocktail as we know it today has its roots during Prohibition in the 1930s. Homemade hooch, bathtub gin and other blackmarket beverages were usually unpalatable on their own. But add some juice, fruit, and a splash of sugar and voila! the results were intoxicating.
The Complete Bartender's Guide is a lavishly illustrated cocktail sourcebook. There is so much more to cocktails than the drinks themselves. Discover their fascinating history, lore, recipes, and even where to find them at some of the world's best bars.
This 400-page book goes way beyond any professional bartender's guide.
Key features include:
A-Z listing of 1,000 cocktail recipes
Serving suggestions and tasting notes
Brief histories of spirits
Essentials for a well-stocked bar
Brand and spirit recommendations
Directory of the world's top 500 cocktail bars
The Complete Bartender's Guide will be a practical yet fascinating addition to bookshelves and bars alike.

The best book for any bar.......1999-10-16
This is the book you need when a customer asks for those non-standard drinks. It contains all the standards as well as a ton of unusual drinks, plus quite a few shooters. The recipes are easy to follow, with glass recommendations and pouring instructions. All the drinks are listed aphabetically (alaises are listed with the prime name). Several drinks have alternative recipes. The spiral bound version is a must. The index groups the recipes by the prime ingredients. Cons: The index is in very small print, difficult to read in a bar. I would like to see the aliases in the index. It would also be nice to have another index by catagory (eg: shooters, etc). There are no blank pages to write additional recipes. There is software version available (pricey) that allows you to search and select by keyword (eg: martini, etc).
Fabulous!!!!.......1999-06-05
This book was perfect for me-- I got it so I would know what drinks to order when I went to a bar or club, and it helped me out way more than that!! I love it!
The best book I've used for making great drinks........1998-08-24
This drink guide beats Old Mr. Boston and other drink guides hands down. The drinks are easy to find, make sense to make and it has the drinks my friends and customers want. My one complaint is that it is hard to find in regular bookstores.
Customer Reviews:
The author.......2007-01-15
I just wanted to say that my Grandfather wrote the American Standard Bartenders Guide. As well as Classic Cocktails, Tropical Cocktails and Elegant Wine Cocktails. He passed away in 1992 from cancer. When he produced the book in the 80s it was well ahead of its time. Very few bartender guides had a full color picture of the drink on one side and how to make it on the otherside. The book has a space for notes as well as measuring chart, terms etc. He set the standard of what a lot of bartender guides are like today. He was in the middle of negotiations with Seagrams to buy the rights to his book..but he passed away before the deal was made. Every drink in the book was made by him at the Brigadoon in Vacaville CA. Then the drink had its picture taken by a professional photographer named Bill Honig of Vacaville Ca. He owned Vacaville liquor emporium for many years. He has traveled the world extensively and was a master bartender. (he reminded me of the Irish guy in the movie Cocktail. He had the gift of gab. He was Cherokee indian and Irish and was raised on a reservation. His Sons and Daughters were great athletes and still reside in the Vacaville area. His son Tommy Murphy Jr. Was a linebacker for UCLA, BYU and University of Hawaii. He attended Vacaville High school and was a state champion wrestler, star football player and baseball player. He was a blue chip player in the late 70's. The book is a great book for any bartender. I have personally seen the book in use from Reno to Dallas Texas in many of their hotspots. He was a great man with a great vision to improve the skills of many the bartender.
