very helpful!.......2007-09-04
I am using this book for the second time around. It's still full of fabulous information. As with anything you have to take it all with a grain of salt. I use this book reguarly to determine if I should take a toddler into the ER on the weekend or if it can wait until Monday.
I had to buy this..........2007-03-11
I had to buy this book because The Mother of All Pregnancy books was so helpful. I found the book useful already with my 14 month old and find that I need to reference it whenever new toddler behaviors decide to surface.
not the best.......2007-01-06
I wasn't totally impressed with this book. It definately has some good points and advice and there is information to be learned, I just thought it was average in the format.
This book is a lot of fun.......2006-03-23
How can you not like a book with this title? It is a huge book with tons of information. I find it a lot more helpful and user friendly than the what to expect series....but that's just my opinion...Great information - I keep it out for ideas, suggestions and to check up on my toddlers progress.
not super.......2006-03-16
I had liked The Mother of All Pregnancy Books and decided to try this one. But I don't find it nearly as complete or helpful as "What to Expect the Toddler Years". I haven't read it cover to cover, but so far I find that the sections don't delve deeply enough into topics or offer unique suggestions/advice.

Customer Reviews:
One sentence in the book bothers me.......2007-09-10
So, I was happily reading this book and kept telling my husband about how much I like this book & that it ranks # 2 as far as baby books go (Baby 411 is the absolute BEST one) & I have read ALOT of baby books. Anyway I get to this sentence that really makes me mad - it is better to smoke & breastfeed than to not breastfeed at all - I tried to breastfeed my son for 3 months and we just could not do it. He was born with low blood sugar thanks to my diabetes & was given a bottle as soon as he was born. On top of that he had severe jaundice that required us to supplement and he preferred the bottle over having to work for milk. I never felt a let down of milk, I pumped every 30 mins. for 2 weeks straight & all I produced all day long was 2 oz! After going to 3 different lactaction consultants (not to mention the several nurses while in the hospital) none of which could help my baby latch on properly I finally gave up when he was 3 months old. I now have a BOTTLEFEED baby who is 7 months old & is already learning to walk, according to his Dr. he is way ahead of his peers developemently. I babysit a exclusivly BREASTFEED baby who just last week has learned to turn over (my son was turning over both ways at 3 1/2 months old) & has gotten sick double the amount of times that my son has. I feel bad enough about bottlefeeding without hearing sentences like that, I smoked for 11 years and quit a year before getting pregnant because I didn't want to expose my child to that let alone breastfeed a baby while smoking. I don't think that statement makes bottlefeeding mothers feel very good about their decision, we already get enough grief from everybody else and don't need books to make us feel more guilty. And besides second hand smoke can contribute to lung cancer, bottlefeeding can't. If you ignore that one sentence in the book then it's a wonderful book.
Good resource.......2007-03-12
You can never have too much information since a newborn doesn't come with an instruction manual.
Comforting and Funny!!!.......2006-04-05
Bored with all those "stage" in life books for your baby to be? Perhaps you are (as I am) soon to be expecting and realize that you won't have a lot of time to read up about what your baby may/may not be up to and if it is normal after your baby arrives. Well then this book is for you!
I eagerly started the book on Friday and finished it (yes all 500 pages) on Saturday. What a delight. The author uses plenty of references from real life Moms and Dads which add wonderful insite and humor. Be warned though, if you are looking for the "What to expect book" format this is not for you. This is a realistic, warm, and funny look at life that tackles hard to discuss topics in a safe and humorous way.
If you are tired of the same old at this age your child will _____ books then definately pick this up. Its like talking to an old friend that you haven't met yet who has been there and knows the struggles and confusion that comes with having a baby.
Great book for new mother.......2005-07-28
I purchased this book for a young friend of mine who was about to have a baby and had lots of questions about not only the baby, but about what her body was going through. She loves it and refers to it constantly.
A top-notch guide to baby (and mom's) first year.......2004-10-15
This book provides an exceptionally thorough look at baby's first year from both the mother and baby's perspective. First-time mothers often express frustration about how ill-prepared they felt for the early weeks and months of motherhood. This book does an excellent job of giving mothers-to-be a realistic idea of what life after baby will really be like, for better and for worse. It's a truly one-of-a-kind and top-notch reference.

The Good-bye Game.......2003-07-08
My 2 year old son loves this book! I kiss him and hug him as I read it according to the story. I misplaced the original book, but am ordering another here on Amazon.
Young children will enjoy it, as it is not too long or too short and has nice, bright illustrations. I don't even mind reading it a "gazillion" times, as you have to have to do with little ones.
The Goodbye Game,.......2000-11-28
If your child has a difficult time separating from you, then this is the book for you! The Goodbye Game helps children say Goodbye in a positive way. The repetition of playing the goodbye game not only a useful tool to combat separation anxiety but also a math activity. My children have used the goodbye game at day care, pre-school, with babysitters and at bedtime. Fortunately, they don't "need' to play the game anymore, but they still enjoy the story.

Got a Laura in Your Life, This Would Be a Cute Book - a review of "Laura's Story".......2007-04-09
This is a cute little story about a little girl telling her mother a bedtime story. It begins with Laura explaining to her mother that once upon a time she was big and mom was very small.
"Tell me a story," said Laura's mother.
"I'll tell you a true story," Laura said.
"I think it is a true story.
Anyhow, I'll tell it to you.
A long long time ago,
I was big and you were little.
Do you remember?"
"I'm not sure," said Laura's mother. "Tell me about it."
"Well," said Laura, "you were little.
You were so little I could put you
in my pocket. You were so little,
a soup spoon could be your bathtub."
It goes from there to describe the adventure that Laura's tiny mother had. How she fell out of Laura's pocket, got picked up by a bird, dropped into the water and swallowed by a fish which was then eaten whole by a dog who was in turn swallowed by an alligator, lion, etc.
Three Stars. Amusing story that empowers children by having them and mom switch places. Illustrations by Jack Kent are typical of his work, and children should like them. Okay Read-Aloud. Amazon has the age as 9-12; I'd say toddler to seven or eight y.o.

Customer Reviews:
A Helpful Edition to the Series.......2004-05-12
A great sequel to the previous "Mother of All" Books. I have had the pleasure of hearing the author give a presentation and found her to be very knowledgeable, supportive and funny. I really appreciate the humorous, true anecdotes of many parents with toddlers throughout the book. This is the key comfort factor for me that grounds this book in reality..that I am not alone in sometimes being unsure of what to do and ocassionally regretting what I chose to do. The warm, friendly tone of the author, a mother of 4 kids herself, is carried through her books and adds to the comforting fact that she has "been there, done that" along with us. I also would like to recommend another book that focuses on behavior issues of 2, 3, 4, and 5 year olds that has helped my family. "The Pocket Parent" is written in the same friendly tone by 2 mothers, each with 3 children. It also includes many short annecdotes from the authors' personal lives as well as from other parents relating to the hundreds of bulleted tips called "sanity savers" on every annoying behavior you can think of. Both of these upbeat, quick-read reference books are worth having in your home library.
A first-rate Canadian resource.......2002-09-07
I have been eagerly awaiting the publication of this book and was lucky enough to get my hands on a copy yesterday. I immediately sat down and read it from cover to cover. My verdict? It's excellent! I already recommend Ann Douglas' earlier books, The Mother of All Pregnancy Books and The Mother of All Baby Books, to my clients. Now I have an excellent toddler book to recommend as well.
Like the earlier books in the "Mother of All" series, The Mother of All Toddler Books is written with humour and yet is packed with all the need-to-know information: how to deal with everything from temper tantrums to food jags to toilet training. The chapter on behaviour management is packed with all kinds of innovative ideas for dealing with everything from biting to whining to screaming -- reason enough to buy the book.
Canadian parents will appreciate the fact that the book is packed with Canadian resources: leads on Canadian parenting and child health web sites, a directory of Canadian health and parenting organizations, health and safety recommendations from Health Canada, the Canadian Paediatric Society, the Canadian Toy Testing Council, and so on. It's simply a first-rate book.

Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Resource for Canadians.......2003-10-10
I purchased the Mother of All Pregnancy Books and the Mother of All Baby Books for the birth of my first child. I highly recommend these books. The information on practices in Canada sets them apart from other books and made my purchasing decision easy.
I have spent hours reading and re-reading these books (when you're sleep deprived it takes a while to absorb information!). The information is current and the inclusion of comments and advice from other mothers gives it credibility. The writing style flows nicely and I appreciated the touch of humour (yes there's a "u" in humour in Canada) found throughout.
Definitely buy these books if you live in Canada and are expecting a baby. You won't regret the investment.
So You Had A Bab-eh?.......2003-09-11
I bought The Mother of All Baby Books before our son was born, and found it helpful from the start. After our son arrived, I found myself checking in with Ann whenever I had questions about his health, or even my own recovery. Extremely reassuring was Douglas' more laid back approach to child development in the first year than that of the What To Expect.. series (e.g. when your child has not sat up on his or her own by 5 months, you do not need to rush to the doctor..). I highly recommend this book whether you're expecting or have just begun your journey as a parent.
A MUST HAVE FOR ALL SOON TO BE MOTHERS!.......2003-03-24
This book is the only baby book you'll need to buy. It is so in depth and easy to understand. It has a lot of tables and "checklists" that are very interesting. I bought this book after I bought The Mother of All Pregnancy Books, which was awesome too. I like it so much better than the 'What to Expect' series because you can read this book straight through. After finishing this book, I wanted to buy The Mother of All Toddler Books...which is only available in the Canadian edition so far. But I think it will be available in the US soon. Do yourself a favor and buy it now!
Fun to read and reassuring, too.......2003-01-10
I find myself turning to this book over and over again whenever I have questions about my baby's health and well-being. It's fun to read, very reassuring, and I love the fact that it's Canadian.
The Mother of all Baby Books.......2003-01-08
I enjoyed reading this book, it's so easy to read and easy to understand. I found that the book talked about things other books don't even mention. And I love that it's contents are targeted to the Canadian reader. The only flaw I find is that she doesn't have solutions to solving some first year baby situations but all in all, it was worth the money.

The Dan George Pickle Extroadinaire.......2007-06-29
I've known Dan, the pickle man, for over 30 years yet didn't know of his quest for the perfect pickle until about 10 years ago when I returned to the area of my childhood and dined at the Back Eddy (formerly Moby Dick's before it moved across the street).
It was at the Back Eddy that a waiting-for-dinner appetizer of Dan George pickles was brought to our table. Inquiring of the staff as to which Dan George was the creator of this wonderful delight I soon realized this Dan George was the same Dan George I had known for many years.
I have an enormous respect for Dan, the lawyer, the advocate for the poor, the advocate for social justice and the best darn pickle maker out there.
Fortunately, I have one of his recipes (courtesy New Bedford Standard Times) and have made an effort to ensure that Dan George pickles go to the same parties that I do. They are a true winner. Thanks, Dan
pickles.......2007-02-05
I haven't made much out of this book yet, the marinated roasted peppers I thought were very good. The recipes look good and most of them look simple enough. Alot of different ideas, which I am looking forward to trying.
Excellent One Subject Book by Great Team. Recommended.......2004-06-10
I think I would enjoy a book from Chris Schlesinger and Doc Willoughby on just about any culinary subject, based on their excellent `How to Cook Meat' and even more so on this tasty little book `Quick Pickles' on what may loosely be described as refrigerator pickles, as no heat-based preservation techniques are involved. I should note that while Schlesinger and Willoughby are certainly the big names on this briny marquee, the third author, Dan George, is probably the most important contributor of content. George is a lawyer by training, but his real passion and skill is in cooking, especially in cooking pickles. In addition to his role as a litigator, he is billed as the `pickle chef' for Schlesinger's restaurant `Back Eddy' in Westport, Massachusetts where pickled this, that, and the other thing are a big feature of the cuisine. What this means is that this book is not the result of Schlesinger and Willoughby's wanting to make a fast buck by attaching their name to a book about a subject on which they have no expertise.
As revealed in the introduction, pickling, at least some of the most traditional pickling techniques, belongs to two venerable culinary traditions.
The first and more important theme is that of methods used to preserve food before the advent of mechanical refrigeration. In this vein, pickling vegetables joins curing meats with salt and preserving foods by drying as a means of retarding spoilage by bacteria. That most of these techniques are still in use is a testament to the fact that they are also methods for enhancing flavor by removing water and adding salt or vinegar or both to the food.
The second theme is that as a method for preparing foods, pickling is in the same class of techniques as the baking of artisinal breads, beer making, vinegar making, and cheesemaking. All these techniques involve fermentation of sugars or starches into alcohol or acetic acid by the action of yeasts or other microorganisms. This means that in spite of the title `Quick Pickles', pickling procedures simply proceed at a much slower pace than a roast, sautee, braise, or even a marinade. Some recipes may take hours, but others, especially those involve fermentation often need days.
One big surprise is in the number of different pickling subjects and methods. There is a lot more here than dill pickles and Kimchee. The chapters of recipes are:
Fresh vegetable pickles where the stars are cucumber, chiles, corn, onions, zucchini, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes beets, squash, and turnips. The authors do not cover gherkins or cornichons as the vegetables on which these pickles are made are simply not grown in this country. Pity.
Fresh Fruit Pickles, the most common of which are from watermelon and rhubarb. It is more surprising to see pickles made of grapes, peaches, citrus fruits, pineapple, and mango. The secret to pickling soft fruits seems to be in the use of balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, sugar, and spirits, preferably bourbon.
Fermented Pickles, like breads raised with natural yeasts, are the artisinal versions of pickles. This is the land of Kimchee and sour pickles and procedures that run for many days. These are the pickles you fish out of great wine barrels in 19th century general stores.
Oil Pickles are the big surprise in this book. The most familiar oil pickled products to western palates are olives done in a North African style. The true star of this chapter is the technique that comes from India. The famous spice mixes of India such as garum masala plus lots of mustard, garlic, and chiles are heavily used here. Greece and the Middle East are other sources of oil pickles.
Pantry Pickles give us many of the recipes we are most likely to expect in this book, including purple pickled eggs, pickled horseradish, and pickled cherry peppers. Some recipes produce interesting edibles in a few minutes, but all give better results after a few days.
It is just a little surprising that after presenting both East Indian and Pennsylvania Dutch specialities, there is no mention in the book of either chutneys or chow chow or any other pickle relish for that matter. I do not think this is a weakness in the book, but it should temper buyer's expectations by knowing they will need to find a book on relishes to get recipes for these preparations.
While this book offers great recipes, great background, and great applications for pickles, it also happens to be a great book to read. I suspect the Schlesinger and Willoughby team is so successful in it's combining a very talented chef with a very talented culinary journalist. It also does not hurt to have the inspiration of a passionate pickle chef.
Highly recommended recipes that are easier than you may expect, but do not be surprised at the need for one or more days for the products to reach their best taste.
Love the book, hate the binding..........2003-11-18
I love this book, the recipes are easy and fun to make, although I agree with a previous review that many of these recipes will require experimentation to adjust the flavors to your own personal tastes as many of the recipes are quite intense. I also had the same problem with the binding as another reader - the book basically fell apart almost immediately. I really hope that this problem has been or will be addressed in any additional print editions.
great book but one complaint.......2003-11-11
This is a great book. I've made about 10 of the pickles and all have been very good or great except the watermelon rind pickles which maybe just aren't my thing. I recommend buying this book for the recipes. I would give it 5 stars but reduce my rating to 4 for an unusual reason - within 2 weeks of flipping through my book, the pages separated clear away from the cover/binding - a plain old poor glue job by the printer I guess. The publisher sent me a replacement copy upon request, but this copy separated body from binding just like the first - same print edition I guess. Hopefully the first edition of this great book is gone so you can buy one from a new printing with better quality control on the binding.
