Book Description

All it takes to make creativity a part of your life is the willingness to make it a habit. It is the product of preparation and effort, and is within reach of everyone. Whether you are a painter, musician, businessperson, or simply an individual yearning to put your creativity to use, The Creative Habit provides you with thirty-two practical exercises based on the lessons Twyla Tharp has learned in her remarkable thirty-five-year career.

In "Where's Your Pencil?" Tharp reminds you to observe the world -- and get it down on paper. In "Coins and Chaos," she gives you an easy way to restore order and peace. In "Do a Verb," she turns your mind and body into coworkers. In "Build a Bridge to the Next Day," she shows you how to clean the clutter from your mind overnight.

Tharp leads you through the painful first steps of scratching for ideas, finding the spine of your work, and getting out of ruts and into productive grooves. The wide-open realm of possibilities can be energizing, and Twyla Tharp explains how to take a deep breath and begin...

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2007-09-25

It's a shame this book is marketed as self-help---even if that's, more or less, what it is. But what it isn't---cliche, self-absorbed, trite---is what makes this work refreshing and wholly different from most books in this narcissistic genre.

Tharp's book, although spare and precise, is a meditation on what creativity is---the ultimate reason for getting out of bed each day---and how we can work toward cultivating it, regardless of the genre from which we aspire to create.

This is the perfect self-help book for those who abhor the very concept of self-help; Tharp does not condescend or state the obvious. This is a look inside the mind of a master of creativity---and how very fortunate for the rest of us that she took the time to share.

5 out of 5 stars Information packed.......2007-08-24

You will get to know Twyla Tharp very well as she shares the methods that served her creativity well. Her suggestions (at the end of each chapter) are yours for the taking. Take your time with this read, it will be worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Not For Me.......2007-08-23

While the book had a few useful ideas for bringing out creativity I did not enjoy the book. It seemed more focused on her life and her issues and geared towards dance and theater then more of a general creativity guide.

My disinterest in the book may have also come from not particularly liking the author's style of writing.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FOR FILMMAKERS AND DIGITAL MEDIA ARTISTS.......2007-04-02

I was suprised by Tharps inclusion and knowledge of filmmaking, which is due to her choreographing HAIR and AMADEUS, among other works. Her approach to choreography is a window into the process of filmmaking. They are parallel crafts that require the transference of intention to another for action. Make sense? They are NOT solitary pursuits. So issues like Obligation are addressed, which can not be under-estimated.

There are plenty of books written by first or second time filmmakers that tell you how they did it (once or twice) and how to deal with the ups and downs of creative life. Those authors lack the career and endurance of Twyla Tharp. I found this book by accident, and since it was an accident I honored it by giving it a chance.

If you want to be a producer, director, or screenwriter, get hold of this book. It imparts a great deal of life lessons of the responsiblities and demands of creativity, and how to manage your day to day life in pursuit of your work. I've read all the other manuals. This is the most practical and aspirational book you must read. (Again, I don't want to slander other artists who've written their tomes. But this most directly applies to contemporary filmmaking, and is valuable to mid-career artists dealing with issues that don't surface until you're a decade into your craft. Best, Anthony Team Torres

5 out of 5 stars Like studying with a mentor..........2007-02-25

Best ever book! Unlike other "inspire the fragile artist" books out there. She tells HER story of success, HER methods for stirring creativity, and HER reflections on those artists she looks up to. In this way, it is not a self help "you" driven monologue. Instead, it is like studying with a mentor to glean information.

I found myself savouring the multitude of excercises she uses to loosen herself up. I didn't want to read the next chapter for a week to make it last longer. In the end, it freed me by not only doing her suggested excercises (which will apply to you no matter your medium) but by realizing that i can use my creativity to invent personal artistic catalysts for everyday use.

2 out of 5 stars Yumm... trans-fats!!.......2007-06-26

Wonder when trans-fats became healthy - there's so much margerine called for in this book you'd have to buy half a case! Sure, you can substitute butter, but fat is fat is fat. On a possitive note, the recipes come out well using reduced fat peanut butter - also used butter in half the amount with some success. Not thrilled with this book.

1 out of 5 stars Healthy?????.......2007-02-09

When was margarin healthy??? I just looked inside here at Amazon and all the recipes started with MARGARINE!!! Margarine = Trans Fats!

5 out of 5 stars Picky Eaters Beware!!!.......2005-07-17

I am the Mom of a very picky eater & I am purchasing this book from Amazon after trying it out from the library.
I think it has a lot of great ideas & also catchy names for the foods, which really baits the kids into trying something new!
I'm just taking a batch of the "Bunny Hopper" cookies out of the oven right now...

2 out of 5 stars Too much fat!.......2003-09-18

This book contains way too many recipes with high fat items. It also doesn't contain the nutritional info for the finished items, which makes it useless to me. If you're thinking "healthy" means moderate to low fat/calorie, then this isn't the book for you!

2 out of 5 stars Should be called peanut butter snack book!.......2002-01-10

I was hoping to find some help in the snack dept, as I have a limited variety of ideas for my partially food-allergic kid. He is allergic to a few items -- one happens to be peanuts, the other egg whites, but that's it. And unfortunately, 80% of the recipes in this book include peanut butter, nuts, or eggs! Nothing more original. I expected some of this knowing kids love PB, but most of the recipes are inclusive of one of the 2 allergens my son has, so this book was a huge disappointment.

If you're child is allergy-free, this book is for you. Nevertheless, it's still peanut-butter heavy. Given the incidence of kids with allergies in today's world, it would be great if more cookbook authors gave a section/chapter of their work to allergy-free recipes for kids.

I'm a pediatrician and have used this journal with my patients successfully for over 2 years now. Kids and whole families are healthier because of this great tool. Our most successful story is a teen (senior in high school) who has lost about 110 pounds. She is on her third volume, having completed every single page in two full books (the books have 365 pages for daily entry.

Get this for your kids AND for yourself!

5 out of 5 stars Fight the obesity epidemic where it starts.......2004-03-26

As Amby Burfoot notes in his introduction, we're hearing about the increasingly obese American on a daily basis now, particularly how the problem is starting with our children. Carol Goodrow's solution starts with our children as well, and it is neither overly ambitious nor particularly challenging. It is simply this: teach your kids to eat in a healthy way *every day*, to exercise *every day*, and do it *with them.* Get them in the habit at a young age, show them that an active and healthy lifestyle is fun and enjoyable, and they'll grow up enjoying it.

That said, this isn't a how-to book. It's more like a workbook, and it doesn't ask for much at any one time. It has weekly pages for your children to write down their exercise, fill in their healthy meals, and be creative. It offers pages full of ideas for fun, active things to do outside (you won't find a computer game anywhere in the book) and encourages parents to fill in the pages with their children. Because it is meant to be consumed a little at a time, it encourages and supports positive habits, rather than just making an argument and sending you out on your own.

If you're looking for a good way to encourage healthy habits in your children and yourself, this is almost certainly the best place to start. And if you buy this book now, you might save them buying dozens of "quick-fix," so-called diet books selling weight-loss "secrets," later in life. In that way, it's downright subversive. Who knew?

5 out of 5 stars Quiet excellence.......2006-05-28

First-of all, I'm a guy, so I didn't think I'd really get into it when I picked up my niece's copy of "The Treasure of Health and Happiness". Wow! Was I wrong. I started reading it, and I was so impressed, I didn't want to give it back to my niece! Excellently written message which comes through without being overbearing. I know that my niece (and her parents) will learn a lot from this book. Just an absolutely great book, with an equally great message. Thank you to the author for such a timely book!

4 out of 5 stars The Treasure of Health and Happiness.......2006-05-16

I like it, and its thread. It is instructional without being in your face, obvious yet not onbtrusive to the facts that we should be giving to the next generation. A no-brainer that any parent should wish for this book to be on their child's bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Positive story for first through 6th graders.......2006-05-03

This is a wonderful book. It is a positive story that reinforces the joy of exercise and eating healthy. A great chapter book for boys and girls.

5 out of 5 stars The Treasure of Health and Happiness.......2006-04-21

The Treasure of Health and Happiness could not be a more apt title for a children's book. The reader's acquaintance with Hannah is full of capitaving illustrations; colorful vocabulary interwoven throughout the story literally making the words jump off the pages; a dash of suspense, and a wealth of knowledge subtlety cushioned in gems that Hannah discovers herself on her journey.

The irony is that the book is a gem in itself. This story is not just for children. I think as adults we can all identify with Hannah and her issues of self-esteem--issues so often kept to ourselves until they build up into insurmountable nightmares.

We can all take a lesson from Hannah, who on her own and with the help of her playful pup, Toby, discovers that winning is not the ultimate goal. It is not always the finish but the journey that inspires us to challenge ourselves to try something new.

In this book, Carol Goodrow illustrates that everyone can be a winner. "It doesn't matter how fast you go." (p. 80) What a perfect story for families to read together, what a fitting key to open up dialogue; what a magnificent way for adults to experience joy and growth along with their children!

Fast paced, inspiring, timeless and universal...I cannot wait for a sequel to see where Hannah's growth takes her.

This is a great little book for kids (and adults too!) Reminds me of being a little girl in the local 4-H Club, doing the cooking classes after school. Good recipes and very original artwork.

5 out of 5 stars My Kids Love it!.......2001-02-19

Not only is this a beautifully illustrated book, but it features really fun, delicious and easy to make recipes. I have two kids who are really picky about what they eat and I'm always on the look out for ways to get them to eat healthy. I am in total agreement with the author who believes that half the battle in getting kids to eat healthy is to feed them in an a relaxed environment.

I'm looking forward to her next book!

The recipe titles in this book are almost as yummy as the recipes themselves: Monkey Bars, Wiggle Sicles, Corny Pudding, Tomato Balloons. Penny Warner's Healthy Snacks for Kids provides new pizzazz to lunch and snack time, and helps calm the chaos of cranky, cranky children who need to eat now. Warner has great ideas for smuggling nutrition into old favorites, such as sneaking grated carrots into peanut butter or ground spinach into turkey burgers. She suggests using "props"--funny bowls, colored straws--to spice up food and get kids enthusiastic about mealtime. Each recipe includes a graphic representation of the food pyramid that shows which foods are emphasized.

Product Description

This updated version of a best-selling title combines the new thinking on nutrition with sensible strategies for snacking. The author shows how to smuggle nutrition into every meal and how to use whimsy to coax kids to eat well. The food pyramid and a nutritional analysis make preparing healthy foods easy.

1 out of 5 stars Fun book, but not as informative as I would have liked.......2003-06-20

I was hoping for a more imaginative book....more helpful in getting my picky vegetartian child to eat more and different foods. Many of the recipes my own 3 yr. old could have come up with herself!
Oh well.....another to add to the collection!

4 out of 5 stars Recipes Galore!.......2000-08-30

This is a handy sized cookbook with tons of recipes. Definately more than what you would expect for its size. Recipes are of the heathly variety with yogurt, fruits, and granolas as main staples of the recipes. The recipes are easy to follow, and come out well. They also give great ideas on presentation to help with the pickey eaters. If you are into health foods, and making sure your young one gets plenty of the natural foods this is the book you want to pick up.

This cookbook is great. I have made a lot of these recipes and my family loves them! A lot of these types of cookbooks call for strange ingredients that are hard to find, or things I wouldn't eat...much less expect my kids to eat. These recipes are fast, easy, and good for you. There are also easy snacks for before and after games and practices. My family's favorites are the smoothies, banana bread, and the "Rookies Pumpkin Oatmeal Cookies." She also talks about the importance of good nutrition and how it effected the U.S. National team while in China. Great Book! It is a must for parents with active kids!
