With Oberon back, war with Chaos appears inevitable, something which does not thrill Corwin. Oberon therefore dispatches him on a mission through Shadow.

More subterfuge is discovered, and in the end, the unicorn with the Jewel of Judgement appears.

2 out of 5 stars Great premise, terrible rambling style.......2006-02-24

I am very disappointed in this author, though I continue to read the series. I find myself skimming. I don't have the patience to put up with his nonsense, but I do want to know how the story develops.

He makes us wait and wade through garbage before he continues telling us the story. He sends us through unreal and just plain stupid scenes, describing them in detail as if they are real and significant, when in fact they are just vague meanderings of the mind of an author who has gone way off the track.

We never know how a friend or enemy will turn out. Maybe an apparent friend will attack Corwin suddenly. Maybe an apparent lover and soul mate will simply get stubborn and ditch Corwin. Maybe an enemy will suddenly be just peachy keen. It all depends on what side of the bed Roger has woken up on. There is no consistency, only the whim of the writer.

There are no rules to his universe. The only rule is that he will do what he damn pleases at any moment, and will bore and frustrate the hell out of his readers whenever he likes. He will go on and on about some stupid philosophy, and then will make fun of it.

It is a frustrating experience to read this series because the writing is often terrible, but the basic premise of the story is excellent and makes me want to keep skimming, if not actually reading, this garbage.

I wish someone taught the author how to tell a story directly. He needed an editor who would take this epic ten story fantasy and cut it down to a fraction of its size, leaving out all the bull.

At one point he decides to give us a bar full of leprechauns. For God's sake. At one point he decides to give us a friendly jackal who suddenly turns to attack. Oh leave me alone, you frustrating excuse for a writer. You have made your point. You will pull anything you like out of your tush and call it a story. What a waste of a sensational premise. I just wish that a good author wrote this series.

Does anyone really read every word as you describe one more boring unreal scene after another, oh there are flowers falling, oh the sky is zebra colored, oh there is no sense of gravity here, oh there is a stranger standing there staring, oh there is a woman hanged, oh the leaves rustle, blah blah blah. Put your head on straight, stop screwing around, and just tell us a story.

Finally, the end is in sight. With the fifth volume in the Amber series Zelazny brings the first cycle to a close. Oberon has returned to the throne, Brand has been revealed as the real traitor, and the Courts of Chaos await the final battle for Amber's existence. Corwin finds his sudden relegation to second fiddle irksome, especially since Oberon's offhand manner hasn't changed in the least, but he knows his duty and the family pulls together for the final struggle.

The key order of business is to repair the damage to the pattern and close down the threat of the black road. Oberon's final decision, to remake the pattern is one that will likely kill him, whether he succeeds or fails, and Corwin suddenly discovers that his irritation with his father is only skin deep. It is with a heavy heart that Corwin follows his father's command and starts his hell ride for the courts.

And runs straight into Brand, who has no intention of allowing Corwin and Oberon to undo his plotting and return things to normal. Corwin is delayed by one conflict after another. Not only is the final outcome in doubt, but the reader must cope with the possibility of two endings at once.

It was no mean feat in the 1970's to turn out a five volume series that could keep reader interest at a high level. As the volumes progress, the writing develops, and it is interesting to compare this book, which consists of one long and detailed hell ride to other efforts in the series to capture traveling through the shadows. The Courts of Chaos find Zelazny a much stronger writer than he was when the series started out. He not only sets a compelling pace, but Corwin's character blooms as a several thousand year old man suddenly matures before out eyes.

The Courts of Chaos is really the best of the series that had a great start and then wobbled a bit in the middle. It guaranteed that Amber would have a place in the hearts of fantasy lovers for some time to come, and set the scene for the next five Amber volumes. While these aren't my favorite Zelazny works, they are still outstanding writing.

    4 out of 5 stars A new pattern?.......2002-02-02

The battle of Brand and Corwin reaches its climax as everyone tries to create a new pattern in the battle with Chaos itself.

Courts of Chaos has all the usual twists and turns of an Amber novel. It is an absolutely wonderful series and it probably goes without saying that you should begin at the beginning, and not here.

This book is a comprehensive portrait of our nation's criminal court system with its primary focus on the judge's role. It provides a first-hand look at the criminal justice system based on interviews with 500 judges and other key members of the criminal court workgroup, including prosecuters, public defenders, private criminal lawyers, court clerks and probation officers, in 15 major jurisdictions nationwide. In addition to a discussion on the art of judging criminal cases, the book compares and contrasts the criminal courts under consideration.

My boyfriend's mother gave this to him years ago. I probably own about 50 cookbooks but this is hands down the one I need the most. Simple recipes with authentic and fabulous flavors. The type you would expect your mother to hand down to you. Forget the other[] italian food cookbooks - this is the essential purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Norther Italian Cooking by Biba Caggiano.......2001-12-20

This was the first cookbook I bought when I decided to get serious about Italian cooking. That was over 10 years ago. I have given it as presents to at least 6 people, all who loved the meals I had cooked from Biba's recipes. The recipes are easy to follow (not necessarily easy to make) but if you follow them carefully not only will it taste like a meal prepared by an expert, but it will look that way too!I prepared the Rabbit with Wine and Vegetables for an Italian friend the night he arrived from Italy and his comment was "We have to find you an Italian husband-you already know how to cook!"I am now "famous" for my Lasagne Verdi alla Bolognese! It's the best lasagne I've ever eaten and it looks just like the picture!I have bought other Italian cookbooks but this one remains my favorite!

                    5 out of 5 stars Tutto Bene!.......2001-07-10

Not only are the recipes absolutely delicious, Biba's enthusiasm for food and its value plus her warm spirit unfold in her writings and create a renewed joy for cooking. I feel she's a friend to my kitchen and supporter of my personal endeavor to make people happy partly through great food.

Every dish I've made from Biba's cookbook knocks both me and my Italian boyfriend (and tough critic) over with delight. It becomes a tough decision as to what to make for family and friends. He has even exclaimed "This is as good as my mom's". A book of recipes that will become a tradition of your own.

I love to cook and my ever-expanding family and friends love to eat... this cookbook is the one that I have used for many years..the cover has fallen off and my favorite recipes are covered with fingerprints...(The vegetable and seafood recipes are wonderful! ) it's the one cookbook that I refer to most often and the one I ALWAYS purchase as gifts for beginner cooks...for friends who love to cook..but, mostly for newlyweds.. The recipes are amazingly simple and easy to follow , but elegant..(I usually have most of the ingredients on hand) I've found myself using 3 or 4 recipes for one dinner party.. Everyone thinks I one of the best cooks..but it's Biba who should get all the credit..so, I bow with thanks to Biba for making me the cook I am today.....This is a must in every kitchen!

An earlier edition of this continues to be my favorite Italian cookbook after 15 years. I just purchased a new copy to give to my daughter for her first cookbook.

Every recipe from this book that I've tried over the years has been delicious. There are other great Italian cookbooks out there, and I own some of them, too. I like this one in particular for Caggiano's recipe selection, and its sample illustrations of preparation technique and presentation. The visuals were reassuring when I was new to cooking and entertaining. Now, when I'm deciding on a dinner, this is one of the books I consult out of reflex.

Italian cuisine varies across the penninsula. Most Italian-Americans came from the south. If you are accustomed to southern italian cooking, many of the recipes in this book will be brand new to you, and add a savory variety to your menu.

From appetizers to pasta, polenta, risotto, main courses, vegetables, sauces and desserts, I've made many wonderful dinners with what I call "Biba's book".

I just love this cookbook! Biba's recipes are well explained and go from simple and hearty to elegant and sophisticated! This is my northern Italian cookbook bible! Try the shellfish risotto, friggione, or tuna fish sauce recipes, and you'll see what I mean.

Biba also includes seasonal menus which has really helped me a
lot with putting together dinners for my husband's Italian family! This is a great set of recipes and, if you like Italian food, or, if you're like me and don't really like pasta - this may be the book you've been looking for!

I have been cooking with this cookbook for years, and my mother did for years before me. Biba is the only person she and I would dare consult for the amount of parmigiano-reggiano to put in our pesto sauce, and the recipes from this fantastic cookbook have saved many a dinner party from what would otherwise have been a boring menu. Her risotto recipes are divine, and her sauces and condiments are foolproof, time after time. I recommend her pesto genovese, as well as her bechamel sauce.

It's been more than 40 years since Biba Caggiano came to America from her home in northern Italy's Emilia-Romagna region, and she still yearns for the luscious food that has earned the region a coveted spot on the culinary map. Long an accomplished author, television cooking-show host, and restaurateur, Caggiano still finds a constant source of inspiration in the cooking of her homeland--from the rich stuffed pasta dishes and complex ragus of Emilia to the simple grilled fish dishes and lusty brodettos (seafood stews) of Romagna.

Biba's Taste of Italy is a fascinating culinary tour of Caggiano's beloved region. In chapters on every course from antipasti to dolci, Caggiano introduces readers to the succulent dishes of the area and paints a vivid portrait of both the food and the people. Her salty-sweet Eggplant Parmigiano stars the region's own Parma ham and Bolognese sausage; Seafood Risotto recalls the irresistible bounty of the Adriatic sea that laps the shores of Romagna; and the trademark of Emilia-Romagna cooking--stuffed pasta--appears frequently in dishes like Squash Ravioli with Squab Ragu and Balsamic Vinegar and Cannelloni with Meat Stuffing

In the spirit of the region's small villages, Caggiano offers recipes for unassuming dishes like Roasted, Marinated, and Skewered Eel, in which the delicately sweet flavor of this unusual fish is expertly balanced with the simple yet robust flavors of extra-virgin olive oil, lemon juice, red wine vinegar, fresh sage, and pancetta. Roasted Stuffed Breast of Veal is a truly classic Emilian dish, and Caggiano's version--stuffed with a mixture of sautéed vegetables, Parmigiano, nutmeg, and eggs, then roasted golden brown with a crisp crust--is among the most delectable. Desserts run the gamut from the light, delicious Chestnut-Ricotta Fritters to the dense, sweet Honey-Walnut-Raisin Pie to a refreshing Strawberry Gelato.

The clear, easy-to-follow instructions accompanying each recipe make the book a joy to cook from and the beautiful page design makes it a pleasure to peruse. A brief chapter on the wines of the region and another on Where to Eat in Emilia-Romagna make the book complete. --Robin Donovan

                    Book Description

"There has not been one single day since I have left Bologna in 1960 that I have not yearned for and lusted after the food of Emilia-Romagna. That food is part of my heritage and culture. After twenty-five years of cooking professionally, I can truly say that the food of my region has been a constant source of inspiration in all I have done."

Join author, cooking show host, and restaurateur Biba Caggiano on her journey back to her beloved region in Biba's Taste of Italy.Located in one of Italy's most prosperous northern regions, Emilia-Romagna has given the world a cuisine that is a luscious as it is refined: succulent seafood dishes from the Adriatic waters; hearty, long-simmered ragÙs; and rich pasta shaped into tortellini, anolini, and lasagna. With Biba, dicover the place that's home to so much of what we've come to love in Italian food: prosciutto di Parma, Modena's aged balsamic vinegar, mortadella, and perhaps the world's greatest cheese, Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Featuring more than 250 recipes, from antipasti to desserts, Biba introduces the vibrant food of her childhood: homestyle dishes and authentic recipes from humble trattorie and family-run restaurants. You'll learn how to make Tagliatelle with Bolognese RagÙ; Eggplant Parmigiano that combines the salty-sweet flavors of Parma ham and Bolognese sausage; earthy, bread-thickened soups; Potato and Ricotta Gnocchi; and irresistible seafood risotto. Of course, the symbol Emilia-Romagna cooking -- stuffed pasta -- is here in all its glory with recipes for Ricotta and Goat Cheese Tortellini, Butternut Squash Tortellini, and Anolini in Broth, and so many more.

From the region's coastal towns and villages, Biba shares the simply prepared seafood dishes of the local trattoric -- Clams with Garlic and Cile Pepper and Baked Halibut with Potatoes, plus the simple tastes of grilling shellfish with olive oil, lemon juice, and herbs. In the same rustic spirit, you will also find Roasted Stuffed Breast of Veal, Braised Veal Shanks, and succulent Breaded Lamb Chops.

Biba's frequent family visits to Bologna evoke childhood memories of growing up in this food-lover's paradise, and reaffirms that the kitchen remains the heart and soul of Italian homes.

Bib's Taste of Italy is more than a collection of recipes. It is also a travel guide with all the names and addresses of her favorite trattorie and restaurants where her favorite dishes can be found.

Join Biba as she returns to Emilia-Romagna in Biba's Taste of Italy. It's a trip you will take again and again in your own kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars great addition to her tv show.......2007-02-05

I watched her show on PBS and wanted to know more. The recipies were great with varying skill level. Some were spend the day in the kitchen and others were simpler. I love the soup where you make "noodles" from cheese and breadcrumbs. That's the best!

5 out of 5 stars A dispatch from the International Food Central.......2004-01-19

This sixth book from Biba Caggiano concentrates on `Recipes from the Homes, Trattorie, and Restaurants of Emilia-Romagna', which makes it a long dispatch from International FOOD CENTRAL. There is probably no other similarly sized region on earth with so many world class foodstuffs. At the top of the list stands Parmigiano-Reggiano, Balsamic Vinegar, and Prosciutto de Parma followed by a long tradition of salume, wines, and classic ragu and pasta recipes. The interest of the region is doubled by the fact that Emilia and Romagna have two different cuisines. The former is more traditional and is based primarily on butter. The latter is more adventuresome, more seafood, and more olive oil. This all contributes to a major head start for this book as a major culinary resource.

Ms. Caggiano is a native of Bologna and still has a substantial family living in and around the city, so her recipes have a certain cachet, which may be missing from the average Italian cookbook. Her chapter subjects are very traditional, being:

                    Antipasti
                    Savory Breads and Savory Fritters
                    Soups
                    Pasta
                    Risotto, Gnocchi, and Polenta
                    Seafood
                    Poultry and Meat
                    Vegetables
                    Salads
Cakes, Tarts, Fritters, Biscotti, Ice Cream, and Fruit Desserts

While it may not be an entirely fair comparison, I matched this volume to Lydia Bastianich's book `Lydia's Italian Kitchen'. Although Ms. Bastianich is covering all of Italy, her strength is in northern Italy, as is Ms. Caggiano. Both books have about 400 pages at $30 for Ms. Lydia and $38 for Ms. Biba. The indexes for both books are friendly to both Italian impaired and those who know and relish all the lovely Italian names for recipes. Ms. Bastianich takes the slightly more scholarly approach of having complete duplicate listings with separate listings, for example, of `frico con ripieno di patate e funghi' and `potato and mushroom filling for frico'. Ms. Caggiano gives the Italian name with a reference to the English translation, as in `cacciatora, see hunter-style'.

The two books give almost identical coverage to major topics such as gnocchi. I would give a slight edge to Ms. Lydia for her gnocchi, although I will concede that differences in recipes may be due to regional differences. For some reason, Ms. Lydia includes egg in her potato gnocchi and Ms. Biba does not. To break the tie, I referred to Waverly Root's book on Italian cuisine. He says a very little egg is typically included. Mario Batali's book on Emilia-Romagna gives a potato recipe almost identical to that of Ms. Lydia. Ms. Biba does have some recipes such as cacciatora style dishes, ragu Bolognese, and baccala (salt cod) that are not in Ms. Lydia's book.

In general, I believe Ms. Lydia gives more complete instructions on general topics such as artichokes, although their treatments of fresh pasta seem comparable. I would really like to have both available, as it is clear that both know what they are doing.

Sidebars and headnotes in the two books are equally entertaining, with no overlap. If Ms. Biba's book were the only one available on the cuisine of Emilia-Romagna, I would welcome both books on my bookshelf. At the moment, I know of no other book, which claims to cover the whole province. Mario's book, 'Simple Italian Food' only covers recipes from a single trattoria on the boundary of Toscana and Emilia-Romagna. To those without any Italian cookbook, I would recommend Ms. Lydia's book, as it claims to cover the whole country. To those with a good general Italian cookbook, Ms. Biba provides a delightful supplement.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2003-01-11

Last summer I took my two adult daughters to Biba's for a special mother/daughter dinner. We were treated graciously and had an unbelievable dining experience! We were even able to purchase this book, all three of us, to add to our cookbook collections, and have them autographed by Biba herself. She is a most amazing, and warm host. Her book is beyond most in her style of cooking and authenticity. We love you Biba!

                    5 out of 5 stars Biba Rocks!.......2002-09-11

I was given this book as a Christmas gift from my father, who even took the time to bring it to Biba at her restaurant in Sacramento (Biba's) so she could autograph it to me. Anyway, the very first recipe I tried, the sauteed halibut with olives, capers and tomatoes, turned out PERFECTLY. I've never had halibut so wonderfully and perfectly sauced. The treatment of the halibut meant it turned out exceptionally well textured, tender and flavorful, but not over or under cooked. My dinner date was extremely impressed. He actually thinks I can cook - well even! I'd like to take credit for it, but I can't. Since then, every other recipe from this book I've tried has also turned out successfully.

My main regret is that I didn't make more sauce, as I could have eaten twice as much of it. When not devouring the halibut, we were both frantically scooping any extra sauce onto the slices of rustic loaf Italian bread I baked earlier in the day - but that's another recipe.

The only additional item I would like to have seen is a wine pairing suggestion. But, I'm perfectly capable of figuring that out for myself, and rather enjoy the challenge. I chose a high quality light Red Zinfandel (1999 Fiddletown Lot 1 Red Zinfandel from Sobon Estate). Ordinarily it might be considered a little heavy for fish, but it balanced well with the glorious sauce in this recipe.

                    Biba Rocks!

3 out of 5 stars Not enough recipes.......2001-12-11

If you're more interested in local flavor or in the history of the recipes involved then this is a good book for you. I prefer a cookbook with more recipes and less chit-chat. However, she does include "helpful tips" which I found useful.
