I have tried to read the bible straight thru and never suceeded--life came at me in many directions. After 3 years of trying, i gave up and bought the bible for dummies. This book helped me UNDERSTAND the bible, not only read the words, both equally important in my opinion. Once i started reading this book, time opened up for me and i read it in a matter of 2 weeks! I couldn't put it down--the more i learned, the more i wanted to know and keep learning. I intend to reread it because for the first time in the 4 years i have been a christian, i truly understand the religion. I would recommend this book for everybody no matter where you are in your spiritual journey. Good luck and God Bless

Even though I study the Bible regularly, this helps pull a lot of the key things together.

Great refresher or for the beginner it will get you right on track!

Both my husband and I have enjoyed reading The Bible for Dummies. It is like the Cliffs Notes version of the Bible -- making it understandable without having to attend a theology class!

One can't help but love the writing style and presentation of the authors Father Trigilio and Father Brighenti! If you liked "Catholicism For Dummies" and "The Everything Bible Book" from these authors, then don't hesitate before picking up a copy of this one too. It's an easy and fun read, as well as a phenomenal resource for Religious Ed. teachers, Bible Study groups, prayer groups and everyone else who has questions from time-to-time about people in the Bible. If these two authors keep it up, a library of their books will be just about all one needs!

    Product Description

Knowing when and why Israel s earliest national history (the so-called Deuteronomistic History) was compiled is essential for rightly interpreting that history as well as for tracing the development of Israelite religion and culture. Yet the field of biblical studies has never been more divided over these issues. Some argue that the production of Israel's history belongs to the late preexilic period (sixth seventh centuries BCE), when the monarchy still existed and those responsible had access to authentic and, in some cases, fairly ancient sources. Others argue that Israel s history belongs to the late postexilic period (fifth fourth centuries BCE), when those responsible for its compilation had little or no access to actual sources and much of what they wrote was invented in order to justify political structures and territorial claims in Persian-period Yehud or even Hellenistic-period Syria-Palestine. The present study addresses these important questions by analyzing the phrase until this day, which, like similar formulae used by Greek and Roman historians (most famously, Herodotus), was the biblical historian s way of highlighting archaeological artifacts and religio-political structures that existed during the time of his writing. The outcome of this analysis is not only the identification of when and where the biblical historian carried out this enterprise but also what interests--both political and religious--governed his recounting of Israel's past.

    Book Description

Have you ever done something so dumb you wince at the thought of it? Well, you're not alone. The Bible is full of characters who made some shockingly dumb moves. Here are a few examples:

In Big Dummies of the Bible, bestselling author Stephen Miller shows readers some shockingly dumb moves by men and women of the Bible. Yet thousands of years later, we're still making the same mistakes, and the results often turn out to be as grievous now as they were for these biblical characters. Miller teaches us how to avoid these mistakes and the inevitable accompanying pain and heartache.

5 out of 5 stars Snap shots of stupid! .......2007-05-15

When I picked this up, I started laughing, wheeled around to my wife and said, "This is easy! These are going to be obvious profiles." Most of them were, but they were more than lessons. It was more than just, "David was a dummy. How can you avoid being a dummy like David?" By the way, the title is not my own. Just a little over a month ago, I picked up a sermon series by Dr. Steve Farrar from his Men's group. It was a 10 sermon series, and it happened to be titled, "Shap Shots of Stupid." So just in case you think I've come up with the original title... SORRY! It had to be borrowed.

A lot of people might consider it offensive or harsh that people such as David or Solomon is in this book and considered dummies. Read your Bible a little more closely and then come crying to me. At a few points, David was an idiot, and Solomon wasn't too far off at times! The only ones I kind of had to scratch my head and think, "Now who are these guys?" were the chapters on Hophni and Phinehas (chapter 5) and Jephthah (chapter 7.) I was amazed with the points that Miller came up with that were actually original. And the illustrations were great! It seems as if the man has a heart for people, and helping us recognizing the dumb mistakes that ordinary people made, because we're ordinary people. I got the the chapter on Nabal (fool) and laughed because I'd JUST heard the sermon on him.

All in all, this was great, and all in all, ALL of these people were morons at one point in time, some a little more moronic than others! I think my favorite chapters had to be on Esau, Haman, and Jezebel. If they were playing baseball, they wouldn't know how NOT to crowd the plate. You could call Esau, "Stew boy," for good reason, Jezebel was just a jerk of a queen, AND beyond, and Haman was Hitler once upon a time. I guess if I'd suggest adding anything or anybody, it would be a few people. I would personally add King Saul, Peter, Herod, and the list could probably go on. The list that Miller came up with for this is good for either a beginner who's just started his Christian walk, or a refresher. It was a good refresher for me. The lessons and theme of this whole book could be summed up easily. Go with God's plan, not your own. Don't just grow old as a Christian, grow up in Christ Jesus. What we need is wisdom, so seek wisdom. Wisdom is just another word for common sense.

Hey, bottom-line, let's be wise. Don't be a dummy. Are YOU a DUMMY? We hope not, so let's go with God's plan! Hey, you wanna be a dumb-dumb your whole life? Ignore God, amen? The choice is ours, just like it was back then. Good work, Stephen Miller!

5 out of 5 stars On Big Dummies.......2006-02-25

Stephen Miller's book, Big Dummies of the Bible, is an enjoyable educational experience. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of biblical characters. As the book jacket tells us, probably the most important reason we might want to read this book is for the insight it gives us into how people respond to God. I also appreciated the personal illustrations Miller included, as well as the questions at the end of each chapter.

While it's reassuring to know that the great men and women of the Bible have done dumb things too, this is more of a cautionary book. As I read Miller's retellings of these stories, I found myself reflecting on the lack of vision of some of these people--like David, who had everything anyone could have wanted, yet for all that, he still managed to misuse his power. And yet, for all of that, because of his willingness to accept responsibility for his sins, the mercy of God becomes a major part of his story.

5 out of 5 stars An entertaining and exciting book!.......2005-09-17

Stephen Miller has once again brought the fun into studying the Bible. As a young adult Christian I find reading the Bible often quite dull. Miller does a great job keeping my attention. I love how he translates the message into modern day terminology and his own added style of humor. Big Dummies of the Bible taught me many things I had never learned before, and may we all learn from their mistakes!!!

4 out of 5 stars Don't read this book alone........2005-09-14

Stephen Miller's Big Dummies of the Bible is the quintessential book for a discussion group. Hot topics. Great background information. Fun to read. Written with a big dollop of humor. This book deals with the "S" word in a 21st century way that even a fellow dummy can understand.

    Rev. Bill Calvin

5 out of 5 stars Learn from the mistakes of others - then you don't have to do them yourself!.......2005-09-13

„Big dummies of the Bible" is a very interesting book that describes in a humorous way some dumb people in the bible and their dumb decisions they made. Each chapter has got a part called "Learning from the mistake". So Stephen M. Miller describes what we can learn today from the mistakes people made 2000 years ago - and it's fascinating to see how much we can learn from them.

A plain-English guide to the most difficult book of the New Testament
The Book of Revelation details a dream-like vision of the apocalypse-the end times that bring the tribulation, the rapture, and the second coming of Christ. It is a central text to those evangelical Christians who believe that the end times are approaching-and the inspiration for the popular Left Behind novels, which have sold more than 62 million copies. This balanced, approachable guide walks readers through the symbolism and complexity of Revelation and helps them understand the book's inspiration and significance. Exploring the various ways people have interpreted Revelation over the centuries, it shows how to grasp the enduring messages of this mysterious book and apply them in daily life.

It is beautifully illustrated, for those who need to see where they are headed, and just as beautifully thought out, for those who want to get where they are going. The destination is the food of Asia, with China as the wellspring. The territory Ms. Trang has mapped includes Indonesia and the Philippines, Thailand and Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan and Korea--as well as greater China. She does not pretend to be definitive--that would take an encyclopedia. Rather, Ms. Trang assures the reader that much of what they know of western cooking applies to the east. She begins with familiarity then builds in self confidence, chapter by chapter, recipe by recipe.

There are detailed sections on the Asian pantry, the basics of tools and techniques, an overview of the working fundamentals of building a dish or a meal. Then the book breaks out into chapters on "Condiments, Stocks and Starter Soups," "Rice, Noodles, Dumplings, and Bread," "Vegetables and Herbs," "Fish and Seafood," "Meat and Poultry," and "Sweets and Drinks." She ends her book with notes about Asian food rituals and sample menus and sources. The recipes are refreshingly short, concise, and to the point. A reader could begin by cooking what is already familiar, then expand into the many delicious alternatives Essentials of Asian Cuisine has to offer. Before you know it you'll be swimming like a natural without a second look back. --Schuyler Ingle

                Book Description

With eight major national cuisines, and dozens of regional variations, a comprehensive exploration of Asian cuisine might seem too daunting to present in one volume. But with Essentials of Asian Cuisine: Fundamentals and Favorite Recipes, award-winning author Corinne Trang successfully brings the fundamentals of Asian cooking into the home kitchen in a collection that includes both contemporary and time-honored recipes.

Trang takes the reader on a journey of Eastern culinary discovery as seen through a practiced Western culinary lens. Explaining how and why Chinese cuisine is at the root of all Asian cooking, she describes in familiar terms the techniques that incorporate the five senses and embody the Chinese yin yang philosophy of balanced opposites. Trang uses Asian ingredients commonly found in supermarkets and through mail-order sources -- such as fish sauce, lemongrass, and rice noodles -- to guide home cooks through the preparation of healthy, sensual meals. She illuminates the mysteries of authentic Asian cooking, explaining the aromatic herbs and spices that make Asian cuisine vibrant, colorful, and distinctive.

Trang brings together more than three hundred traditional and cutting-edge recipes for condiments, appetizers, main courses, vegetables, and sweets and drinks from China, Japan, Korea, and Southeast Asia. Mouthwatering items include Chinese Scallion Pancakes, Filipino Fried Spring Rolls, Spicy Indonesian Crab Fried Rice, Japanese Miso-Marinated Black Cod, Japanese Spring Water Tofu with Sweet Sake Sauce, Stir-Fried Leafy Greens, Chinese Pork Ribs with Black Bean and Garlic Sauce, Green Tea Ice Cream, and Thai Coffee.

In organizing the book by type of food, Trang allows cooks to see both the common elements and the distinctive individualities of Asian national and regional cooking. Trang explains the roots of major recipes and discusses where they appear in various guises in different countries. Vietnam's Canh Ca Chua (Hot and Sour Fish Soup), for example, can also be found in Cambodian, Indonesian, and Thai cuisines; Trang provides the recipes for both the master soup and its variations.

Trang includes a comprehensive glossary of Asian ingredients, plus a detailed list of resources for purchasing special ingredients and equipment. She offers sample menus, including a Chinese Dim Sum, a Filipino Dinner, and a Japanese Lunch. A special section on feng shui demonstrates how to organize and beautifully present a meal.

In this lavishly designed and illustrated volume, more than eighty-five original black-and-white and color photographs bring to life the ingredients, dishes, and people of Asia. The book is rich with personal anecdotes and intriguing information about Asian culture, and nowhere else will you find such a clear, comprehensive, and accessible treatment of Asian cuisine. More than a cookbook, Essentials of Asian Cuisine is a celebration of exotic culinary delights.

                5 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-06-09

bordering on exhaustively in-depth, this is a very well written cookbook/encyclopedia for asian cooking.

3 out of 5 stars ESSENTIALS OF ASIAN CUISINE: FUNDAMENTALS AND FAVORITE RECIPE.......2005-08-12

I think this might be a good book for individuals who are not very familiar with Asian cuisine and would like just a light touch of Asian flavors and spices in their dishes. But for someone like me who grew up eating down right bona fide home-cooked Asian foods, the recipes are very unauthentic and the ingredients and cooking methods are greatly downplayed. If I used these recipes to cook for my parents, who are Vietnamese, I woud probably get disowned. But again, I think it might be a good book for starters. The instructions to the recipes are very easy to follow. The author did take time to thouroughly explain each ingredient to the readers. GOOD LUCK!

                5 out of 5 stars Irresistible.......2004-02-15

I checked out this cookbook from the library and tonight I made the chicken adobo, which was incredible. The sauce chapter was particularly compelling as well as the soups and...really, every single chapter contained many recipes that I am anxious to try. I tend to check out cookbooks and type out particularly interesting recipes before returning them. With this cookbook, I found myself overwhelmed with the task and I finally had to give up. I never heard of Corinne Trang but every single recipe made sense, sounded utterly delicious and is very doable. I expect to use this cookbook with full confidence the next time I put together an Asian dinner. What a find.
