Good overview.......2005-09-22
This book gives you a good overview of the different strategic approaches developed in the past decades. Mintzberg et al. divided the well known strategic theories in ten themes. Though Mintzberg is rather sceptical about certain themes, all pros and cons of the themes are put in a nice and structured overview. (The one thing they could improve is treat Resource Based View as a seperate theme.)
This is the best book you can read to understand strategic management themes. It digs one level deeper than the standard introductory books and tells you about the scholars and the articles they initially wrote. Since it's nice and readable too, it's a must for students of strategic management and anyone else interested in the evolution of strategy as a field of study.
Invaluable Guide to Employing Strategic Management Themes.......2004-09-08
This is the most valuable book ever written on strategic management. Be sure to read and apply its lessons well!
I have worked in the field of strategic management since before it was called that, both as a practitioner and as a consultant. One of my favorite complaints about books in the field is that they emphasize one facet of developing and implementing stratgies and ignore the others. This book is the outstanding exception to that problemmatic standard of tunnel vision. There's no stalled thinking here about strategic management.
If you are like me, you would like to get better results from strategic management. Solving one part of the task and ignoring the others leads to failure just as surely as ignoring strategic managment does. Imbalance in perspective can be equally dangerous. As the authors point out, " . . . The greatest failings of strategic management have occurred when managers took one point of view too seriously."
Mintzberg, Ahlstrand, and Lampel start out by pointing out that there are five different kinds of strategy definitions (as plan, pattern, perspective, position, and ploy). When you read books about strategy, keep these in mind.
They begin with the tale of the six blind men and the elephant. Each can grasp one element of the elephant, but cannot grasp the whole. That's the situation the authors are warning you against.
They define this work as "a field review not a literature review" so you don't find every book's details. Whew! That's a relief. On the other hand, they are clearly familiar with the literature and cite it where appropriate. The book is designed for managers, consultants, professors and students. The style is also designed to be easily accessible. And these goals are well achieved in my view.
Although recognizing that the human mind boggles past 7 items (which seems to be the limit of what short-term memory can retain), they found 10 themes in the field. The first three emphasize traditional left-brained thinking of the sort that dominates in business schools: Design, Planning, and Positioning. The next six are other aspects of strategic management that are more right-brained: Entrepreneurial, Cognitive, Learning, Power, Cultural, and Environmental. The final one is focused on transformation, the school of Configuration. Each one receives its own chapter and its weaknesses are displayed.
In chapter 12, the reader is encouraged to synthesize the 10 themes into integrated use. There is a table (12.1) that neatly summarizes each theme, a figure (12.2) that shows how they are mutually related, and a remarkably useful figure (12.3) that effectively shows how they can be integrated from perspective and in sequencing.
You may be wondering what all of the fuss is about. Basically, strategic management is one of those fields that has yet to emerge with an integrated perspective on the firm. In fact, the problem is poorly perceived because most people are unaware of the areas they are ignoring. In fact, I always create syntheses of these areas in my writing and am often criticized for dealing with subjectively perceived nonissues that the readers do not see the importance of. Strategic myopia seems to be a common problem, not just among the scholars.
I feel very indebted to the authors for developing such a wonderful overview that I can recommend to others (including my clients). I also appreciate their clarifying that the important question now for strategic management is creating a useful synthesis. My personal view is that this must be done by creating one simple, effective mindset that encompasses all ten perspectives, without requiring anyone to learn each one directly.
I strongly urge you to read and apply the lessons in this seminal work on strategic management. I also hope you will find your own novel integrations of these perspectives and share them.
Good luck in expanding your perceptions of strategic management and its potential to help you and your organization succeed!
After you have finished this book, ask yourself which of the perspectives are missing from or underrepresented today in your organization. Then begin to think of ways to add those perspectives.
If you would like to learn more about strategy, you should also read Mintzburg's outstanding book, The Rise and Fall of Strategic Planning, which I have also reviewed.

Excellent outdoors adventure stories before Jurassic Park.......1998-08-13
Time Safari was originally a short story, and was then published as a novel under the same name by including two additional stories: Calibration Run and Boundary Layer. It was published again as Tyrannosaur, with Calibration Run replaced by another story called Tyrannosaur.
These stories trace the central character Henry Vickers through his involvement with time travel (through a mechanism invented in Israel). Vicker's is the modern day white hunter born a hundred years too late and he is unable to make a living in the modern world, even failing in marriage. Vickers finds that being a safari guide is the thing he is cut out to be and he can accept the rugged in-the-wilds life. He marries a client who also shares an interest in outdoors and hunting, and they form a team together.
People who are interested in pre-history, hunting and outdoors adventure will like this one. Calibration run is set in the age of saber-tooths and pre-human hominids, but is still a good! tie-in. The dinosaurs in the other stories are fast, and alive, not clunking grunting lizards. I read this before Jurassic Park ever came out and was wanting someone to make a good dinosaur movie as a result. Jurassic Park's velociraptors were straight out of Time Safari, except that David Drake's characters aren't clueless preppy sub-urbanites when they meet.
David Drake is a visual writer, concentrating on what is going on rather than dissecting the characters in self-centered introspection. He includes a number of technical details to add grit, yet he doesn't (for example) make up some hokey theory of time travel mechanics and try to expound on it, boring the reader with pages of fake quantum mechanics like some writers are guilty of. He is the type of writer who admits to an interest in dinosaurs since he was a boy, and who also admits that his version of the dinosaur will one day be outdated. And he concentrates on people; his stories expound on human interaction, an! d while they feature disasters they aren't horror stories.
Similar to this book is Arthur Conan Doyle's Lost World novel (the original, not Michael Chrichton's version) which is dated and illogical, but interesting, and L. Sprague de Camp's Rivers of Time stories.

Book Description
Foreword by Tony Dyer. His godmother was Isak Dinesen. He grew up with the likes of Percival, Blixen and Rundgren. Selby & Holmberg Safaris took out Robert Ruark. What else. Andrew Holmberg holds the record for the greatest number of 100-pound PLUS elephants. SIXTY THREE taken for family, friends and clients and that does not count many that were almost 100 pounds. Andrew Holmberg recognized the potential of the harsh Northern Frontier District of Kenya when foot safari blocks (no motorized vehicles allowed) were created. He worked hard and took light loads in because he was going to have heavy tusks and lots of other trophies to take out. His personal best on elephant: 141 pounds per side; his best buffalo - 58 inches! Andrew consistently pioneered hunting new areas where others followed later. Looking through his photos it is hard to comprehend that when these hunts took place, exceptional trophies were Holmberg's typical results. (Sam and Rose Pancotto took three 100-pound plus elephants on one safari!). No other individual has been given undisputed credit for so many number one accomplishments in the hunting area - by both clients and professionals like - as Andrew Holmberg. This book is, in one word, extraordinary. As Tony Dyer says, Andrew Holmberg has led a "larger than life" life. One needs a mighty big brush to paint his life story. Over 300 pp. Over 200 spectacular photographs (over 128 full pages of photos). Extra large 81/2 x 11 inch format.

Great book!.......2006-06-20
I was pleasantly surprised with how good this cookbook is. I am having a big luau in a few weeks and this book has been a huge help! Not only are the recipes easy to follow but most of them can be prepared ahead and frozen, with all the details included at the bottom of the recipe. I prepared many of them ahead, and of course had to sample each! The Bali Bali meatballs with sauce, excellent. The stuffed mushrooms Lelani, awesome and my kitchen smelled wonderful! I can't wait to make the Hawaiian Banana Pie and the Tahitian Chicken, not to mention the Baked Clams!! Too many to mention. If your planning a Luau and need some great easy to follow recipes, this is the book for you. I highly recommend it! Oh, and don't forget to try the Beef with Peanut Sauce and the BBQ'd Pork!!!
well written but out of date.......2005-02-24
This cookbook written by the mainland-american manager of the now-defunct Hawaii Kai restaurant in New York City represents the epitome of fine Tiki Restaurant Dining in the 1970s.
This style of cooking is perhaps best characterized as take-out Chinese food served with a slice of pineapple in a hollowed-out pineapple-shell used as a container, eaten in a restaurant decorated with carved wooden tikis, bamboo struts and thatched huts.
Half of this book is dedicated to this genre, where the actual recipes are very similar or even identical (soy sauce, sherry, ginger, garlic) but the presentations are elaborately different with an emphasis on outlandish (flambee recipes etc). Since the average reader scarcely have time to cook dinner, the advice on food presentation hardly seems relevant.
In the time since this book was written, the chinese tiki restaurant cuisine has evolved to Modern French or American cuisine with Asian ingredients, and these are the books that you can buy from the likes of Sam Choy et al, and these are the dishes that you will encounter in the fine dining hawaiian restaurants today.
Yet, what has always appealed to me about Hawaiian Cooking, is the more humble homecooking (today known as "plate lunches") that evolved from the simple traditional dishes that the plantation laborers from Asia and their Hawaiian polynesian spouses would make. This included grilled meats with asian marinade, japanese style fried cutlets, some chinese style noodle soups, and sadly only a small number of "real" polynesian dishes like laulau, kahlua pig, lomi salmon, haupia, and poi (perhaps less than a dozen of such traditional unadulterated polynesian recipes have survived).
Half of this book does try to address this wealth of simple but authentic home cooked dishes. But that is clearly not the strength or emphasis of this book, and in fact I'm not aware of ANY hawaiian cookbooks that seem to do these dishes any justice, and your best bet at the moment is to search for recipes on the internet.
I think that in emphasizing the "new" and "high class" restaurant style cooking be it from the 70s or today's contemporary cuisine, the cookbook authors have missed out on the true wealth of home cooked hawaiian cuisine that people in Hawaii eat everyday and perhaps take for granted, but for the rest of us living outside of Hawaii, it would be a priviledge to learn those recipes.
Hawaiian Cook Book Review.......2000-04-04
This book was really easy to use and didn't have a lot ofterminology or technique's that we're too "foreign" for usregular people. I have made at least a half a dozen different recipies out of this book so far. They have all turned out pretty well and had a lot of flavor. I am not a master chef by any means so I recommend this book to the simple cook!
Book Description

Good Reference on Hawaiian Regional Cuisine.......2007-09-01
I did not find all the recipes in this book difficult to follow, and I have made a number of them. I don't consider complexity to be a valid criticism. After all, we're talking about A-list Hawaiian chefs here, not Rachel Ray. But these recipes do assume a fairly high level of knowledge on the part of the reader. For example, the "Lemongrass Coconut Cream" recipe has as one of the ingredients "1 cup thick bechamel sauce". I hope you know how to make that, because the cookbook doesn't say. Similarly, some recipes call for demi-glace without further explanation.
The editing of this book was sloppy and could have been better, and it would have avoided some rather ridiculous snafus like the "Rotisserie Island Chicken" that has "Huli-Huli Sauce" as an ingredient. Not so helpfully, the recipe is immediately followed by something called "Huli-Huli Style Sauce", one of the ingredients of which is 1/2 cup of Huli-Huli sauce! I'm still wondering what the hell Huli-Huli sauce is.
My number one criticism of this book is that many chefs include unusual, local-to-Hawaii, and hard-to-find ingredients in the recipes. Even those of us who live in an area with many Asian markets may have a hard time finding some of the ingredients like sambal olek, or ogo seaweed. It would have been good if the chefs would give the reader who does not have a lot of experience with this particular style of cuisine just what it is about these ingredients that make them special, and what one might substitute when the preferred ingredients are unavailable.
I do give this book 4 stars, because many of the preparations are indeed delicious.
Complicated recipes, not enough from Roy's.......2007-01-20
I've been an avid home chef for years, and the recipes seem complicated to me.
Snobby Chefs.......2005-05-16
When you purchase a cookbook like this, most people are hoping that the recipes would be written so that someone with a fair amount of cooking experience can follow the instructions and make the recipes. Not in this cookbook. The chefs often leave out important details so that only experienced cooks can follow and make the recipes. The worst one in the book is Eric Favre. His directions are so unclear it's as if he is being intentionally snobby and put his recipes in the book just for the royalties, not so you can make them. I'm sure there are many good recipes in this cookbook, you're not a chef, I'd strongly recommend buying another book.

A compilation of other cookbooks.......2007-06-07
I have very mixed feelings about this cookbook.
I gather from the introduction that this is one of a series based on visiting different states and putting together a cookbook to "preserve their food heritage". How the authors plan on summarizing the entire culinary experience of a state with such an interesting history, mix of races, and emphasis on FOOD is answered by what you get: a compilation of other cookbooks. So on the plus side, many of their sources are really good. (The entire Honpa Hongwanji series are great and are in my mother's, grandmother's, aunt's, etc collection. They're sort of dated, but have a lot of classic everyday food.) On the negative side taking a few recipes from other recipe collections gives you very little coherence, understanding of where that recipe came from (time period or heritage), or understanding of the ingredients. Plus, the selection of these recipes are just sort of strange. Spicy Garlic Eggplant and Pork (pg 128) and Spicy Szechuan Eggplant (pg 100) are basically the same recipe with minor changes from 2 different cook books. Several recipes are for poke, but the authors don't seem to realize they're related, or, at least, don't explain what it is. I have to wonder if they actually cooked these recipes at all or just leafed through the other books.
Pictures are chosen to be more atmospheric with tourist photos of the authors, scenic places, and some line drawings (not of the food). The photos of people in "native garb" (at tourist sites) also contrast with the recipes, which are largely modern pot luck sort of food. (In particular, there's a cringe-worthy vintage photo near the front that must be just for nostalgia's sake because no one I know in Hawaii would be caught dead looking like that.)
Besides the food, there are also little tidbits of information peppered through the book that are supposed to give you an idea of island life. My question: Who exactly told the authors that curry is often served at parties? What a strange generalization. They also commit the faux-pas in the preface of calling their friend a second generation Hawaiian. Hawaiians are like American Indians; you can't call yourself one just because you've moved somewhere.
So, there are definitely some good recipes in here. It's just that you stumble upon things that are just plain wierd if you're from Hawaii.
Not something you would use in a big party.......2007-05-29
The receipe directions are vague. It's a good book, but just not a party book.
off the hook recipes if you like island cooking.......2007-03-09
I was complete taken back by the yummy recipes from the islands

Great Memories in this cookbook............2007-05-12
If you've ever been to the Hali'Imaile General store, you know this is going to be good. It's a great souvenir of your trip, even if you can't cook. The photos of the restaurant are wonderful as are the little opening stories Bev writes before each chapter begins. You do need to know a bit about cooking for some of the recipes.
ATaste of Heaven.......2003-01-03
After many trips to Maui over the years we finally tried Hali'Imaile General Store. It was my Birthday and wanted to try a new place. What a treat! The service was the best Joan was our fantastic Server and made us feel like Royalty. Her suggestions made our dinner the very best it could be. Since that first trip we have had many, many dinners and taken our Clients and family there for dinner, we get such rave reviews we seldom take new Clients anywhere else except when in a hurry on time or for a little more casual bite we go to "that other place" they have ribs too! We enjoy the fantastic variety of foods. I fell in love with the fishcakes at first bite had to go back the next day and ordered them just for me NO!sharing. My family and friends know if you want to please me with a "gift" a dinner gift certicaate works.Where else would I want to go. One of my favorite deserts Pina Colada Cheesecake this was the most Heavenly taste. I tell people when we take them to the Restraunt its WONDERFUL and still they cant believe how good the food and service is. Mahalo for all the great times we have had at your Place and they other place too! Bev & Joe you have really done a great job keep up your part and we'll keep up ours "eatting at your places with family, friends and clients" My best Friend gave me a gift certificate after 2 trips to the restraunt in a week we had to go back to Portland, Joan sujested since I love the food why not take a cookbook back so I did.My daughter who loves cooking stole my book. So had to buy a new. Need to be able to get a fishcake fix. Now after several more trips we now live here and eat at both of your places alot. Have to go to Joes for Crab Dip. They to have a great staff but there is no place like Hali'Imaile General Store.I flew to PDX on business 15 times this year always tell people on the flight they have to go eat at both your places it never suprises me when we run into those people at dinner. Now I'm hungry I think I'll go make reservation for dinner tonite!!!!! See you at Hali'Imaile General Store we are the couple at the table by the window! Agian Much Mahalo Bev & Joe You have done a great job! Maui has alot of fine Dinnng and truly this is our Favorite!
Beautiful as it is good!.......2001-10-01
The Portuguese Bean Soup recipe is really the best I've ever had.
The book is broken down by seasons which I found to be more authenic as well as easy to use. Most people don't realize that Hawai'i does indeed have seasons-other than the tourist season.
My step-father, a native of Hawai'i, and I have had much fun shopping for some of the ingredients here on the "mainland". We have been able to find just about everything to make several of the recipes (and neither of us live in a large town).
For some great Portuguese Bean Soup, you have to get this book!
WowWee Maui.......2001-06-05
I purchased this book several months ago in anticipation of hosting a baby shower with a luau theme. I spent several months agonizing over which of the many amazing dishes I should make. I settled on the soba noodle salad, pork tenderloin with pineapple chutney (I omited the mushroom polenta) Paella and pineapple pie. It was amazing. although the recipes involve a boatload of chopping, and in some cases, a lot of ingredients, most can be made one or two days ahead. Anyone interested in fresh, complex flavors and textures should buy this book. My guests ran the gamet of tastes and ages, but I ended up with very few leftovers. I am a cookbook affeciando and I say this is a Great Great Book. I'd even fly to Maui to have them cook for me.
Upcountry Bounty.......2001-02-28
Just returned from "Paradise" (Maui)and had a chance to visit the wonderful "Hali'imaile General Store" restaurant-what a experience!! Outstanding meal (didn't get a chance to sample the 'crab dip'-and unfortunately, it's not in the cookbook),amazing artwork, unbelievable floral arrangements and excellent service!!I just had to buy the cookbook and I'm so glad I did-the same wonderful foods, artwork and floral arrangements are in the cookbook-wait until you see the pictures-breathtaking!! It's more than a cookbook (with some wonderful receipes)it's a picture book to enjoy!!
