Brenda Watson knows her stuff!.......2007-01-10
Wow. This book is chock full of great information on how our digestive system works, why it is so essential to our everyday life and what we can do to keep it running smoothly.
I feel so much better after following her suggestions. I have given the book to others to borrow.
Everything you need to know about Digestion.......2007-01-10
This book is the most comprehensive guide to digestive health available today. It covers digestive problems, weight control, detoxification diets, and cleansing programs in great detail, with specific remedies for particular digestive problems. Renew Your Life provides the in-depth solutions that Dr. Brenda Watson outlined in her PBS seminars, including lists of the symptoms each digestive problem commonly creates. Although most people resort to this level of medical education after feeling pain, this resource is a great value for anyone who wants to find out what to eat, what to avoid eating, and how to restore and maintain healthy balance to their digestive tract, and by doing that, restoring good mood, high energy, and robust health.
Colon Health is Body Health.......2006-11-27
Brenda Watson has done the research on colon health and Renew Your Life is one of the basic keys to balanced health. Her step-by-step program along with her H.O.P.E. formula is an important basic beginning to getting your body back to a healthy state, or at least, to a state of balance where you can then concentrate on "fine tuning." I don't agree that you need all of her products, but I do agree that detoxing the colon, liver, kidneys, etc. is an unfortuneate necessity in our society.

Book Description
We are living in a time when worship has become a distinct priority for the Christian community. For years the church has emphasized evangelism, teaching, fellowship, missions, and service while neglecting the very source of its powerÂworship. Recently, however, many churches are experiencing a Spirit-led renewal in their understanding and practice of the praise and worship of God.
Renew Your Worship is a small-group course of study designed around thirteen easy-to-understand sessions. Part One, Why Sunday Worship? introduces the idea of worship renewal, the definition and structure of worship, and the variety of worship styles. Part Two, What Does Worship Do? studies four actions of worship: gathering, proclaiming the word, celebrating the feast, and sending out into the world. Part Three, Breaking through the Barriers of Passive Worship, looks at ways to ensure congregational participation in sessions on the psychology of worship, prayer, preaching, singing, and the planning of worship.
Book Description
Taking time out from everyday activities, duties, and problems is a proven way for men and women to affirm meaning and spiritual value in their lives. Many people seek a few days' refuge in a religious environment such as a monastery. However, personal retreats can also take the form of short, intensive periods of entirely private, personal reflection and renewal in the midst of everyday life. This inspiring book offers practical advice on how to get benefit from all types of retreat. The author recommends creative exercises and meditations drawn from many spiritual traditions. He guides readers in the act of reviewing their life's events and milestones as a first step toward setting future personal goals. For readers who prefer to keep the spiritual retreat personal and private, he advises on creating a schedule that allows time for meditation, and setting aside a space in which to meditate. There is also advice for those who wish to choose a spiritual director, or who wish to make a group retreat. He asserts that now, in our machine-driven age, we need to take control of time and discover proven routes to spiritual renewal and growth. His advice is enhanced with 60 color illustrations.

Common Sense Reminder.......2000-09-12
This book is a great little reminder of the common sense things you should do in a marriage, plus some things you just haven't thought about before. This book is a cross between the styles of "Life's Little Instruction Book" and "His Needs/Her Needs". You get 52 little commentaries by Bruce and Stan ranging from such topics as communication to recreation, in-laws to work, spiritual growth to growing old together. Throughout the whole book, though, it reminds us that a marriage is a 3 way relationship between husband, wife, and God (you know, the One who created marriage in the first place). Recommended for anyone thinking about getting married, in a comfort zone in your marriage, or looking for something that will keep you in your marriage (hopefully you aren't to this point). Reminds you of the little things that got you interested in your spouse in the first place. The things you did for him or her that were in their best interest and showed them that you not only love, but cherish them. It's the small stuff that chips away at or builds up a relationship. Definite reread, over and over!

Perhaps if Oz Clarke had his way, Baskin-Robbins would manufacture 15 flavors. Not that "vanilla" even comes close to describing the style of the prolific London Daily Telegraph wine correspondent, James Beard and Julia Child Awards winner, and author of the perennially updated Oz Clarke's Pocket Wine Guide. Any wine writer who routinely refers to champagne as "fizz" and value-priced bottles as "gluggers" is a wine novice's friend, right?
Welcome to Introducing Wine, Clarke's contribution to the overcrowded wine primer field. Subtitled "A Complete Guide for the Modern Wine Drinker," this 3-chapter, 144-page glossy tome liberally sprinkled with color photos is designed for the reader looking beyond a wine shop's old reliables. Part I deals with wine flavors: Oz's aforementioned 15, ranging from "juicy, fruity" to "ripe and toasty." Part II takes on wine enjoyment--buying, storing, opening, serving--while Part III serves as a grapey gazetteer of the world's wine regions.
It's a delicate job Introducing Wine in such confined space, but Oz is a good host: witty, learned, and only occasionally schmoozily vague. A "buying" discussion flits about, touching on e-tailing, futures, and mixed-case discounts for half a page; other paragraphs sparkle with wine descriptors both enchanting ("face cream" and "beeswax") and confounding ("damsons" and "lanolin"). Clarke's capable of both enlightenment (warnings include such terms as "reserve" or "superieur") and overkill: if your retailer sells more Lucky Strikes than Lynch-Bages, you needn't Oz to tell you it's a "bad wine shop." Copious opinions, too, can raise eyebrows or shrug shoulders: Pinot Gris "always" exhibits a hint of honey? Zinfandel is California's "all-purpose" grape? Easier to swallow is Oz's assertion that French vin de table can be "pretty much anything that won't kill you." Helpful in Part III are the Quick Guide sidebars explaining regional jargon and suggesting wines, although recommendations from California and the Pacific Northwest are uninspired--a rare Introducing Wine instance where plain vanilla mixes into Oz Clarke's jamocha almond crunch. --Tony Mason
Book Description
Unlike other wine books, Oz Clarke's Introducing Wine starts off with a guide to choosing the taste of the wine you want. In describing the flavors offered by wine in all its variety, Clarke provides a summation of the varieties and shadings of taste that are available, and then directs you to the grapes, regions, and producers that will give you what you want. Everything flows, so to speak, from taste.
Comprehensive in its summation of everything you'll need to know about tasting, serving, and storing wine, Introducing Wine ends with a guided tour of the shelves of a wine shop. Here you'll learn how to find the taste you are looking for in the most practical and useful way. Vividly illustrated throughout, Introducing Wine is an indispensable companion for beginners as well as anyone who wants to brush up on the world of wine. Direct, unpretentious, and easy to consult, Introducing Wine is the best basic primer on the market, from a supremely knowledgeable and engaging writer.

Fun and Informative.......2007-06-18
This book was a gift to me from my wife. We drink a lot of wine, and neither of us know much at all about the stuff. Even so, at first glance I didn't think I was going to like the book. It seemed too simple, too basic, too cutesy. Clarke is fond of sweeping generalizations, and his writing style is like an enthusiastic public school boy describing his favorite pudding ("loads of flavor!"). But I must say, I think it's a great book. I use it all the time as a reference. He covers all the basic questions I've had about the production of wines, the different varieties, etc. Sometimes, I'm amazed by what I find in here. After visiting France, we decided we like the dry roses they drink there in the south (great in summer), and started buying them here. We found pretty much everything we tried to be good, until we had a bottle of Rose D'Anjou, which we hated. Looked it up in Clarke and he had singled it out as "one to avoid." Anyway, I'm sure there are other excellent books out there on wine, but I felt moved to write this review for the simple reason that Oz Clarke has been a reliable source of information for me for over four years now. Plus, the style is unintimidating. The guy just likes drinking wine, and he wants you to feel that way too.
Good, basic wine info........2007-04-07
This book is especially useful for those who are first getting interested in the subject, and want to learn some very fundamental, but important facts to enhance your understanding and enjoyment of wine, and of wine with food. It's a good book from which to build your knowledge if you simply want to make better wine choices, or if you want to start a collection. It's easy to read with plenty of visuals that are well laid out. Wines are segmented by grape varietal, taste comparisons, and by country to enhance your learning.
As a collector of wine, I also have many books on the subject, which range from basic to complex. I often find myself still referring to Oz Clarke's Introducing Wine, when I need a quick and solid reminder.
For those who like wine but don't know where to begin.......2007-01-11
My wife and I enjoy a bottle of wine every month or so, but had no system in selecting our wine beyond the categories of price, red/white, and appearance of label. Nothing wrong with blind chance, but we wanted to know more about what we were drinking and how to select it.
Enter Oz Clarke's "Introducing Wine". This is a perfect introductory book for us. He breaks wine into comprehensive but accessible categories - from "flavors" to regions to food matches to bargains. Also teaches you the basics of storing, serving, tasting and selecting.
We are ecstatic to have this book. We also purchased "The Wine Bible" and "Oxford's Wine Companion" but have no plans to crack those open until we get the basics down from this one.
excellent introduction... can't go wrong.......2006-01-14
this is an excellent introduction to wine. i didn't know anything about wine other than there was white, and there was red. on a whim i decided i needed to learn a bit more on the subject, and searched for a book.
when you search for top sellers, you always get things like the wine bible or the latest vintage/wine guide book. i thought about buying these, but i didn't need to know WHAT type of wine to buy, i needed to understand what the types of wine WERE in the first place. then i stumbled upon this book, which is extremely well laid out, concise, down to earth and informative. all of these qualities combined make you really *want* to read the book, or re-read it as i do constantly.
first, clarke breaks all wines down into 15 major styles such as "juicy, fruity" or "intense, nutty". he then gives some detail on each of these styles, discussing major flavor traits, regions where wines with these flavors come from, etc. he includes two "flavor wheels" for reds and whites which let you see what types of wines fall into what flavor categories. this links up to the section on the book that matches wine to food. so, for instance, if you know you're having grilled lamb you'll see you may want to match it with an "intense, blackcurranty red", which falls into the "Black Fruits" section of the flavor wheel, and that section of the wheel contains wines like "mid priced california cabernet sovignon".
this layout is fairly simple to navigate, but there's a lot of information packed into a few pages which keeps you coming back. a thing i should mention is that clark doesn't preach his word as gospel when it comes to matching wines and foods. he makes recommendations, but clearly isn't elitist/snobby about it - he wants to guide you, not to control you.
another section of the book is dedicated to grape varieties. so if you have no idea what makes cabernet sovignon different from merlot, you will after reading this. clarke does a good job, discussing most of the major grape varieties, and giving brief synopses of lesser varieties.
the book then has a whole section about how to serve wine (he talks about glasses, storage, etc), how to taste wine (sight, smell, taste), ordering wine in a restaurant (very helpful for those who are afraid of trying to navigate a wine list on the spot).
there's a short section on understanding wine labels & classifications which despite being six pages long, contains a lot of information. you build on this as you move to the next section of the book which covers major wine growing regions of the world.
the last section of the book discusses wines in different countries. all the big producers are covered, and there's a lot of information here for the beginner. this section of the book is laid out like this - we'll use France as an example:
- Brief introduction & notes on French classifications
- Clark then breaks the country down into geographical regions such as Bordeaux.
- The Bordeaux section gets an overview which discusses the different smaller regions within Bordeaux, whether or not these regions matter when purchasing Bordeaux, the types of grapes generally grown, whether or not vintages matter, and whether or not you can afford them.
- Bordeaux then has a "Quick Guide" that shows a map of the region, gives a synopsis of basic regional information, lists some helpful local jargon, good vintages, bad vintages and then a list of 15 wines from Bordeaux that you should try - each of which is coded with a price indicator. (just a note, the key to the prices is on the page before the table of contents... took me a minute to figure that out. and he doesn't just recommend $200 bottles of wine... the book has multiple listings that are under $8)
anyways the coverage of different countries and their regions/wines gives a whole lot of info to wrap your head around if you're new to wine. this is the type of thing that a book like the Wine Bible goes into great detail about (it's Bordeaux section is 42 pages long compared to clarke's three) but i wouldn't recommend jumping into the Bible because there's simply too much information to begin with.
so after all my long-winded ramblings, needless to say i think this is a great book. there's a whole lot to learn if you're a beginner, and clarke gives you what you need to know without giving you so much information you're completely overwhelmed. (believe me, there's enough information in this book to keep you busy for a while)
to top it off, clarke writes clearly and concisely, loads the book up with little side bars with quick facts and tips, gives plenty of personal insight into the wines and most of all just encourages you to get your feet wet and have a good time doing it.
good luck!
Entertaining, useful primer.......2004-12-06
This is a brief, breezy three-part primer for the aspiring wine aficionado; liberally splashed with color photos of wine, wine country, food to eat with wine and Clarke with a glass in his hand.
First he discusses wine flavors, what to buy and from where, according to pocketbook. Then he gives tips on enjoying wine: pairing with food, storing, buying, and deciphering the label. The last and longest section discusses wine by country: regions, characteristics and ten to try. An entertaining, non-threatening, useful guide for the beginner.
