5 out of 5 stars My very favorite romance novel........2005-10-17

I have been rereading this novel for over twenty years and can remember exactly the night I purchased it. What a revelation! I love California history and Mrs River's early novels were all steeped in it. The intense conflict between the characters is very exciting. The writing is superb.

"IN THE HARSH LAND OF THE CALIFORNIA SIERRAS, A WILD LOVE STRUGGLES TO BE BORN...

Kathryn Durham was familiar with hardship-raising her younger brother, Jeremy, without a mother; keeping her house for her father. But Katie loved their homestead, adored her family. Then one day, her father is fatally shot, the only clue to his murderer the initials he drew on the dirt before dying: M D.

MACE DONOVAN: the man who had offered to buy up the Durham spread. The man with the muscles that rippled like a stallion in motion, and eyes as cold and as fierce as a puma's. Mace Donovan: virile, powerful, wealthy-and a murderer.

Determined to avenge her father's death, Kathryn is thwarted at every turn by this man who makes her churn with rage and tremble with emotions she is helpless to stop. Like two wildcats, they claw at each other, tempers as brutal as the land they live on. She is a shrew, and he intends to tame her. He is a killer, and she wants him to hang.

Only when Jeremy becomes a pawn in a deadly game does Kathryn finally admit her deep love for Mace Donovan-a love that may have come too late to share."

DAYS OF BATTLE, NIGHTS OF PASSION

A proud and fearless warrior, Kieran Broderick was half-Irish, yet bound to fight for the English crown. So when King Henry decreed that he take an Irish wife to quell rebellion there, he reluctantly agreed. Newly dubbed the earl of Kildare, Kieran travels to Langmore Castle, seat of the lawless O'Shea family, to choose a bride. Yet when he picks Maeve O'Shea, a fetching less who seems sweetly submissive, he finds himself facing the most daunting battle of all. For Maeve is not biddable in the least, and she refuses to allow him into her bed. Still, Kieran is determined to conquer the rebellious beauty--body and soul. But first, he must scale the battlements around his lady's heart.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Medieval Romance.......2001-06-03

Shelley Bradley does a commendable job of portraying Kieran and Maeve's disparate viewpoints and why they both feel so strongly about their belief systems. Kieran is sworn to the English king in an age when a man's word is his very honor, while Maeve detests English tyranny because of the rape and plundering that has gone hand-in-hand with it. I've read other romances where the author employs the "born to be enemies" scenario, but this is the first one I've read where the author actually pulls it off without making the heroine come across as an exasperating shrew.

Ordinarily I prefer romances where the hero and heroine both realize their feelings for the other early on and spend the remainder of the book cementing those feelings in one form or another. Such a plot device, however, would feel too unrealistic in His Rebel Bride and Bradley is wise not to use it. Yes, the hero and heroine are mutually attracted to each other from the beginning, but their feelings of genuine attachment happen in baby steps throughout the novel and are borne of thoughtful gestures here and kind actions there. Because of that fact, Kieran and Maeve's romance is a convincing one.

Aside from the well-scripted romance, what brings this novel into 5 star status for me is the complexity of the protagonists themselves. On the surface Kieran seems to be nothing more than a charming ladies man with a grin that kills, but underneath all of his bluster lies a loyal, steadfast man who has experienced much emotional neglect and abuse in his childhood and therefore doesn't really think he'll ever find somebody capable of loving him for himself.

On the surface Maeve is a woman who appears to be stoic and unemotional, but underneath the determined face she wears for everyone is a tenderhearted woman who has grown weary of the bloodshed that has been the direct result of England and Ireland's clash of wills. She is also a woman who is being torn apart, forced to choose between the country and kin she has always known and loved and the husband she is growing increasingly adoring of.

His Rebel Bride is not perfect. There is a plot device used toward the end that seems a trifle too convenient, but it's not so outlandish as to distract from the novel as a whole. Viewed in its entirety, Shelley Bradley has taken a subject matter that is very difficult to convincingly work with and crafted it into a winning novel. Because of all the odds and obstacles the couple must face before finding their happily ever-after, Kieran and Maeve's love story is a powerful one and one that will stay with you long after you close the book.

4 out of 5 stars An amazing story.......2001-04-12

Set in 1484. King Henry needed someone in the Pale to keep peace. A rebellion was forming in Ireland and word had finally arrived that the two young princes, Edward and Richard, were dead. The King needed someone loyal to England to be Lord of Langmore Castle. Thus, someone would have to wed one of the four O'Shea women that lived in the castle. However, the Statute of Kilkenney prohibits the English from marrying the Irish.

Kieran Broderick was half English and half Irish. Being such and one of Henry's best warriors, he was made Earl of Kildare and sent to Langmore Castle. Kieran hated his Irish heredity and loathed the thought of a wife. Of the four, he chose Maeve O'Shea, even though she was betrothed. In fact, her betrothed, Quaid, was currently in a dungeon for killing two Englishmen. Only the youngest sister, Brighid, would even consider Kieran as a husband, but she was too young. The biggest problem was the brother, Flynn, who often disappeared to side with the rebellion.

Maeve vowed to hate Kieran. She wanted freedom for Ireland, but not at the cost of lives. Kieran loved battle. That was obvious. Yet she saw him help her sisters when he did not have to. Slowly, Kieran and Maeve would learn about each other. But there were so many obstacles.

**** An amazing story! The author was able to show what Ireland faced and the awful feeling of loved ones against loved ones! Recommended! ****

5 out of 5 stars The warrior with a heart -- highly recommended.......2001-04-01

Kieran Broderick has known little but warring and fighting all of his life, taking satisfaction in life through his fits, his weapons, and in his bed. He plans to leave England for Spain where he will serve as a mercenary, until the King changes his plans. He tends to ignore court ritual and bed every pretty wench who looks his way, which has earned him the King's displeasure. He has therefore been made the earl of Kildare and King Henry decrees he must go to Ireland. He is half-English and half-Irish; consequently exempt from the law forbidding the English to marry the Irish. He's take possession of Langmore Castle, the home of the O'Shea family. The O'Sheas are a rebellious lot, and bear watching. Kieran is ordered to suppress the rebellion, enforce the peace, organize the army, and marry and breed one of the four O'Shea sisters.

Recognizing Kieran for the rogue that he is, Maeve would like to dismiss Kieran out of hand for being English and a warrior. She considers him both primal and primitive. His kisses are like spiced mead, and he tastes like pure temptation. Betrothed to another, she's shocked he chooses to marry her, despite the fact she's not a virgin. Further, she had thought Kieran, who loves teasing and has a bloodthirsty nature, would consider the rape of women part of the spoils of war. So when he proves his heart by finishing a cradle for her sister, because the father is dead, and comforting another sister who was raped, Maeve finds herself torn between his warrior nature and his kindness.

People listen to Maeve and respect her word. She refuses to present herself as challenging. Kieran would enjoy nothing more than conquering her. But she wants no part of him, only peace. Indeed, she only married him for the hope of peace in Ireland. As part of the rebellion, she must her role as scribe and messenger hidden at all cost. As Kieran comes to their chambers, Maeve desires him even as she believes that her body has betrayed her. To fight her attraction for him, she asks that he wait a fortnight before they share a bed, to give her time to grow used to their sudden marriage. During this time she must spend an hour alone with him each evening, and he will only touch her with one hand and his mouth.

Shelley Bradley weaves a fascinating tale of desire and passion. Maeve quickly learns what a tease a single hand and a mouth can provide! These spirited and wonderfully believable characters provide a marvelous read. THE REBEL BRIDE's sensual love story stirs the senses and the emotions. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A lusty, intriguing romance from a wonderful writer.......2001-03-06

Kieran Broderick was one of the fiercest warriors in King Henry's realm. Half Irish, half English, and well known for his deadly skills and lustful passions, Kieran was astonished to find out his next assignment for the English throne was perhaps the tamest he ever received. He must travel back to Ireland, take over as Lord of the Pale, and take an Irish miss for his wife. But not just any Irish lass, one of the ladies of the lawless O'Shea family. Kieran girds himself up for an unpleasant adventure, one that soon turns into an quest of romance and pleasure as he picks for his wife the beautiful but feisty Maeve O'Shea. Could he have fallen in love with the enemy?

Maeve O'Shea was loyal to her country, but even more loyal to her family. When forced to wed Kieran, the new English Lord of her home, she goes about it steadfastly and resolved. However, the quick grin of her new master turns her head like no other ever has, even her betrothed but imprisoned fiancé. Soon Miss Maeve finds herself questioning her sanity as passion ignites her heart. As she observes her husband's kindness and gentle ways with her sisters and family, as well as his ferociousness and determination to protect her home, Maeve soon surrenders her heart to the enemy, her husband, her love.

In the final installment of her thrilling series "Brothers In Arms," historic romance author Shelley Bradley wraps up her successful trilogy with the most intriguing of the three warrior knights, the Irish rogue Kieran, and his quest for true love. "His Rebel Bride" has to be the most intriguing of the series, featuring the mysterious Irish lad and his buddies Aric and Drake. Mixing in just the right amount of good-natured humor with sensual passion, Bradley concludes this series on a high note. All three men find the women that match them in love, and you just know the couples go on to lead eventful lives. It would be fun down the road to visit the threesome's children and see how they turned out! Watch for Shelley Bradley to continue to rise as one of the most accomplished new writers in the romance industry. She should have lots of good things to offer for a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars a fufilling ending to the saga!.......2001-02-15

Kieran Broderick, whom is half Irish, must travel to Ireland to take an Irish wife and bring a stop to the rebellion of the people. He is not pleased with the King's order but ever faithful to the English crown, he reluctantly agrees. Of the four O'Shea sisters, Maeve is the one that catches Kieran's eye but the Irish beauty is against what he stands for and vows not to submit her body or her heart to this handsome rogue.

Kieran and Maeve's story is a very satisfying conclusion to Ms Bradley's medieval trilogy which left me quite fulfilled. With lots of action but most importantly tender moments that I believe readers look for in a romance story. And the love scenes were very nice too! Also hopefully there will be more stories from generations to come. As someone that had never read medievals before reading this trilogy, this author proved to me how great a romance story can be told in this time era. Five hearts all the way around....I loved it!

Book Description

A sweeping military space adventure from a talented new author in the tradition of MIDSHIPMAN'S HOPE and ON BASILISK STATION.

A former colonist, Scott St. Andrew escaped his hellish mining home by joining the Guard Corps and entering the most intense training program in the military. When war broke out between the Terran Alliance and the Seventeen worlds, he was forced to choose between the two warring factions––and two codes of honour. Now Guard Corps Captain St. Andrew faces his first command––to retake the South Point Academy on the hellish moon Exeter where he trained only a year before.

But the alien technology that makes St. Andrew one of the elite is faulty; he will die unless he is reconditioned properly. And only the Wardens––a secret alliance staging a coup d'etat against the Seventeen––have access to the conditioning. In the theatre of war that ensues, Captain St. Andrew faces his most difficult decision––obey the Corps' code of honour and die slowly, or join the Wardens and live?

4 out of 5 stars Excellent read!.......2004-09-22

When civil war broke out, Cadet Scott St. Andrew and Cadet Halitov abandoned the Terran Alliance to join the rebellion of the Seventeen Worlds. This marked them as traitors. However Scott is beginning to believe neither deserve his loyalty. Due to his not being fully conditioned, Scott is still aging rapidly. This means that even though he is a lethal fighting machine, he will not live much longer.

The Colonial Wardens is a secret splinter group within the rebel infrastructure. They are planning a coup and have agreed to correct his deteriorating condition IF he casts his lot with them. They also all but told Scott flat out that his brother, Jarrett, was really alive. Scott is determined to find out if all the Wardens say is true or if they are feeding him more lies.

**** The character, Paul, from the first book shows up again. Readers get an update on him, his lover Dina, and his father the Colonel. Halitov remains his normal selfish person, but I still could not help liking him. Of course, like the first book, Scott gets promoted quickly due to the war. Also like the first book, this one ends with no closure. Be sure to have all three books of this trilogy before you begin reading! I wish someone had told me that before I began it. ****

4 out of 5 stars A book of difficult choices.......2004-07-10

This story is told as a flashback memoir, but essentially it carries straight on from the first book in this series BROTHERS IN ARMS, although we do have some glimpses of Scott's future after the war.

In this novel Scott St Andrew faces a choice - he has been approached by the Colonial Wardens to join their organisation and switch sides in the conflict. For Scott, while he can appreciate their aims, this means betraying everything of moral importance to him. This is basically a book of difficult choices. We meet old characters from book 1 as well as some new important people as Scott shifts though a myriad of plots and betrayals.

Although the constant battle scenes can be wearying and somewhat depressing with all the loss in lives and how little they really achieve, this book rattles along at a fast pace and keeps you wanting to know how it ends. I'll be very interested to see where this war takes St Andrew in book 3, PATRIOTS IN ARMS.

5 out of 5 stars Best book ever........2003-09-05

Rebels in Arms is the perfect end to a perfect series. My favorite part is how believable the characters are. When I read the book I was living it through Scott st Andrews eyes. Ben has certainly outdone himself with this one. It is the best book I have ever had the pleasure of reading and I recommend it to anyone who hasn't taken the time to go through it. It is the best thing to happen to literature since Lord of the Rings. His are the stories that I will remember for the rest of my life.

4 out of 5 stars A very good read.......2003-05-26

Captain Scott St. Andrew is a traitor. He abandoned the military alliance that trained him, to join the rebellion of the Seventeen Worlds. St. Andrew had been physically altered with alien bacteria that gives him superhuman powers. But now that technology is breaking down, and the only thing that can save his life is to have his body reconditioned.

The story starts out as a flashback of St. Andrew telling a war story to a class of graduating cadets. St Andrews is trying to reach a reconditioning center on Kenndey-Centuari, but his commanding officer has other plans for him. Instead they are sent to the mood of Exeter to take back the South Point Academy. Halitov, St Andrews friend, is listed as MIA while battling the Alliance marines.

After their battle to take bake the Academy, St Andrew is given orders to locate Lieutenant Paul Beauregard, the missing son of Colonial J.D. Beauregard of the Colonial Wardens. He is believed to be where the first Racianian runes where found, the Minsalo Caves.

Overall this is a very entertaining read. The battle scenes are really engaging and I found myself not wanting to stop until they were over. One of the most interesting aspects is the way that St Andrew and Halitov control a force that gives them amazing powers. This force makes a lot of the battles very entertaining. I would highly recommend that you read the first book in the series Brother In Arms because it helps feel in a lot of the back-story. Whether you read the first book or not Brother In Arms is highly enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Up In Arms.......2003-01-16

Like the first book, this one leaves you with some questions. Prime among them are: Who is the mother of Scott's daughter, Joanna? Will there be a spin-off series with her experiences in war? And the carry-over from the first book, How does Scott get treatment for his conditioning problems? Overall, I found it a great book and will look forward to the third book, appearently called "Patriots In Arms".

Seven Stories Press is proud to release the first critical edition of Nelson Algren's masterpiece on the 50th anniversary of its publication in November 1949. Considered Algren's finest work, The Man with the Golden Arm recounts one man's self-destruction in Chicago's Polish ghetto. The novel's protagonist, Frankie Machine, remains a tragic American hero half a century after Algren created this gritty and relentlessly dark tale of modern urban society.

5 out of 5 stars Reading Nelson Algren.......2006-05-26

This is a wonderful book! Nelson Algren knocks spots off of his contemporaries;chiefly because he actually lived the lives of those he wrote about.
The language is fabulously arkane and is only just seeping into everyday usage. We now know that a 'mark' is a person about to be 'hustled'(ie conned and robbed) and thanks to TV poker we know what the punk has when he looks at 3 J's wired! Unfortuneately,we also know all the drug terms as well.
The plot is wafer thin and largely irrelevent-Frankie Machine kills Louie the pusher;his run ins with the law;his dead beat marriage and affair with Molly-O-;its the cast of division line Chicago slum dwellers that are everything. If you read this fishing for a plot to hook into, you'll soon get lost. But if you read each segmented paragraph as a short story in its own right that merges into a bigger picture;you can't fail to love this magnificent book.Dickens never had such a cast of characters to call on!

1 out of 5 stars Dated novel that doesn't ring true on any level .......2006-03-19

I can accept that this book was a classic in its day and obviously you had to be there then to appreciate its shock value at the time. However, great literature should transcend the time that it was written in and should reach out and speak to future generations. There are plenty of novels from that era that do just that but The Man With The Golden Arm is not one of them. It is ponderous, turgid and lacks any sense of urgency and desperation that its central theme - heroin addiction - should necessitate. Situations and relationships are one-dimensional and cardboard-cutout-like rendering them thoroughly implausible. However, the real failure of this novel is in it's dreadfully antiquated 'hip speech', a failed attempt on the part of Algren to capture the street lingo of the time. Trying to capture speech patterns in print is a delicate task that needs to be executed with skill and precision for it to work, neither qualities which seem apparent here. Instead, it sounds false and clumsy, making the novel unnecessarily difficult to read.

Bottom Line: If you're looking for an accurate depiction of drug addiction in '50s America, you won't find it here.

      5 out of 5 stars Worth reading.......2005-12-27

I heard the title The Man with the Golden Arm long before I ever read the book or saw the movie. It's a beautiful, evocative title, but it also makes you think of something grotesque: a man with a shiny prosthetic. When I got older, and knew the story centered on a junkie, the connotation became even more disturbing: an arm jaundiced by the hypo. I was never much into addiction stories and Algren's book (purchased as a shiny new softcover back in the early 80s, when I was spending the greater part of my college loan money on the creation of a private library) sat on my shelf for more than 20 years.

It turns out that the book is quite a good read. Algren locates the source of dealer Frankie Machine's addiction in his WW2 service-he was wounded and got hooked on the morphine that eased the pain of his injury. The novel also makes clear, though, that in spite of his friends' admiration and awe of his Purple Heart, Frankie was no hero. A grunt's grunt, he remained three years a private.

While the novel tells the story of Frankie's several attempts to kick the stuff, what we get out of it is the tale of a loser in a community of losers, people the American dream has left behind: small-time swindlers, dwellers in fleabag tenements, drunks, and sweet girls who can't get a break Among the sad detritus of this universe, located around Chicago's West Division Street, Frankie Machine shines like a star, with his big talk and his talent (the "golden arm" refers to his sure skill dealing cards, which he hopes to transfer to playing the drums in a big band).

Still, his life spirals downward. And although the drugs are central, you can't help feeling that if it weren't morphine that did Frankie in, it would have been something else. At bottom, he doesn't believe he's worth saving; one of the achievements of the novel is that you end up feeling they're all worth saving, not just Frankie, but also his grimier fellows. Algren draws his characters with such vividness that he takes you beyond pity and amusement to pure empathy with their humanity.

5 out of 5 stars No Work and No Play.......2004-02-27

I think this is one of the best novels ever written. People who say Algren romanticizes the poor have clearly not read the book properly, all he does is say they are human just as you. But describing them as low-lifes like some reviewers did, just shows that Algren's message did not come across. This book is about love for humanity. And that is ALL humanity, not just the part that's nicely educated and has a good job and doesn't rob you at night. One reviewer said that Frankie Machine should of just quit taking drugs and sought himself a nice job and everything would of turned out fine. How? Would Frankie be loved then, would his crippled wife be able to walk, would there be no loneliness and desperation. would it stop raining? Would it stop the El from going round and round? I'm sick and tired of people romanticizin' the rich.

5 out of 5 stars LIKE A BLOW TO THE SOLAR PLEXUS!.......2002-10-30

The great Nelson Algren's powerful tale. A work of art. Chicago, down-and-outers struggling with their various demons. One of the finest of all novelists. Algren, as a human being, had heart, wit, intelligence...and it shows. Not many writers today can touch him, although I can think of one or two covering the same turf: trying to make sense out of this insanity called life: Charles Bukowski, George Orwell, Henry Miller, B. Traven (The Cottonpickers), Kirk Alex (Working the Hard Side of the Street), Dan Fante (Chump Change, Spitting Off Tall Buildings) et al. You might want to give N.A's Neon Wilderness a try as well, a terriric short story collection. Algren's books last because his words have meaning to us--and always will.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Go Wrong with This Book.......2007-09-27

I bought this book many years ago to place with the other vegetarian cookbooks that I had collected. Many of the other books have been lost or given away, but this one stays. Madhur Jaffrey's explanations and techniques are simple and the outcomes are delicious. I haven't made anything from this book that I haven't liked. As I have gradually become more vegan in my cooking (not completely), I will often substitute firm tofu for the panir, and olive oil for the ghee, but the taste is still great.

              3 out of 5 stars Adjust seasoning..........2007-09-12

The instructions are pretty clear and correct. But in following them, I don't think I've ever made anything which didn't leave the stove wanting spices, salt, garlic, or hot pepper. I'd recommend anything by Book Publishing Company or Moosewood over Jaffrey's tempting, consistently diverse but bland offerings.

              4 out of 5 stars Madhur rocks!.......2007-03-20

the first time I tried a recipe from this book was thanks to a friend who owned the first edition from the eighties. since then, the book was on my wish list for a long time, it took me a while to find another copy again (it was out of print).
the qualities of the book can be summarized as follow. first, the recipes are simple to reproduce: even the most elaborate Persian treats are easy to make. second, their variety is incredibly rich, from Korean kim-chi to the most elaborate Indian curry.
as a lover of international vegetarian cuisine and definitely an experimenter, I find this one of the most comprehensive, unpretentious complete book I could have on my kitchen shelf.
the only flaw: every time I cook a new recipe I have to increase a bit the amount of spices suggested. definitely not a book for those who expect to produce very hot dishes.

5 out of 5 stars I like to read cookbooks, but this is the one I actually USE!.......2006-12-19

I have been a vegetarian for many years, and I eat mainly Asian style food. My cooking skill are about average. I don't normally cook from a book or follow exact recipes. However, I fell in love with this book at first glance. I had no difficulties with any of the recipes (and I have tried them all). All the recipes are well-written and clear, most are easy to follow even for beginners, and the results will please even non-vegetarians because they taste so good. If you are a beginner, the lists of ingredients and shopping advice will be very helpful, and not complicated or overwhelming. A great user-friendly introduction to a world of delightful vegetarian cooking.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give it more stars!.......2005-04-21

There hasn't been one recipe from this book that I haven't loved. I found in my public library and started copying the first few recipes onto cards. After my third time of checking this book out, I realized that I would be copying the whole book if I continued. My personal favorites are the Very Spicy Chickpeas, Her recipe for Paranthas, tofu and Broccoli.
All I can say is don't be intimidated by the spice lists. It makes the ingrediants and recipe look twice as long and complicated as it really is.
I also love the artwork! It is beautiful and elegant to me.
