What's not to like?.......2005-01-07
If you're a novice, it's always helpful to see how planets combine--after all, that's the trickiest part of astrology. If you're at an advanced level (I've been at this for over 30 years), it's good to see another perspective. This type of book, by putting two planets together in interpretation, is much more accurate, and great fun at parties, especially, as here, when considering the planets of love and sex. Everyone will be greatly entertained as each person is "nailed". It's a good way to not only entertain, but to get others' interested/intrigued about astrology. Also, try Carolyn Reynold's *The Book of Lovers* for Sun/Moon combinations, which also considers gender. Very lively.
Cute but don't regard it as your bible of companionship.......2002-02-03
I found that though this book offered some cute lighthearted insights to relationship astrology, they missed the boat on facts and truly diagnosing a relationship's merit with astrology. There is no mention of the idea that aspects or other parts of the couple's charts will have any importance in the relationship chart, which is simply not true.
sexual meanings of planets.......2001-12-02
This book explains 144 patterns of Mars/Venus combination in each sign. The focus is on their sexual implication. Their interpretation is quite detailed and each pattern is supported by a case study of celebrity's experience. Hence, I think that this book can be of great use, if you are interested in the sexual meanings of planets, which are usually overpassed in other astrological books.
The Mars Venus Affair: Astrology's Sexiest Planets.......2001-05-01
I loved this book. It's a great icebreaker -- fun and great for parties. I've got other Birthdate and astrological characteristics books, but this one is the most fun. The Perrys' wit is tongue-in-cheek and I can tell they're just the kind of people I'd like to invite to a dinner party. I'll be looking forward to their next endeavor.
Entertaining!.......2000-08-21
I think The Mars Venus Affair is a really fun book. I don't know much about astrology but you really don't need to in order to enjoy this book. It's written in plain language and tells you which Mars-Venus combination you have and how it can influence your sex life. It was fun to read the celebrity biographies that describe each of the 144 categories. There were several celebrities I already knew something about, like Marilyn Monroe and Greta Garbo, and there were others I hadn't heard of. But they were all very interesting. It's kind of neat thinking you have the same combination of Mars and Venus as Marilyn Monroe or Greta Garbo.
As much as I enjoyed this book at home, the real fun started when I took it to work and it got passed around the office. It really got people talking and giggling. It's probably a good book to have at a party to break the ice, or maybe for a bridal shower.

Customer Reviews:
An early book in the series and it shows.......2004-03-24
This was one of the first novels based on the original Star Trek series, and while it has many of the characteristics of the following books in the series, there is a difference. The later books have tighter storylines as the authors and editors perfected the formula.
In this book, a Klingon ship whose captain is on a blood vendetta against Kirk attacks an Enterprise with a tired crew. The Enterprise easily beats off the attack, but the Klingons also plant a device that wrecks havoc in the transporter room. Kirk and company are then called on to respond to a request by a planet to start the process of joining the Federation.
Not everything in the planet is at it appears to be, as there are some unusual anomalies. While the leaders claim there is no violence, in fact there is, but the people do not notice it. The planet is actually ruled by a computer interfaced with Wayne Perry, the leader of the group that colonized the planet centuries ago. Perry's image is resurrected by the computer as a solid hologram when problems erupt.
I found this story, which is essentially another one about berserk computers that take over a society, to be rather dull. The subplot regarding the Klingons was almost a distraction rather than an improvement. The manner in which the device was planted in the transporter was never resolved and stating that it was a simple device was unconvincing. A virus that prevents a person from committing violence and acts instantaneously on humans and Klingons exceeds my believability index.
Yet, it is Star Trek and it is always great to read about the characters of the series.
Star Trek Cult Classic.......2003-07-04
This is one of the great `non-episode' Star Trek books. This is one of the few books true to the spirit and style of the original stories. It's funny how many times other Trek fans have mentioned this one as one of their favortie Star Trek novels. It keeps coming back into print and I would love to see it re-released - say in a collection with some other Star Trek classics. If you are a fan and you haven't read it then this is a must have. It will really take you back to the old days.
Perry's Planet.......2002-12-31
The crew of the Enterprise is dead-tired and badly in need of shore leave. As they pick up scientists for transfer, they prepare to head to Starbase 6 for needed rest and repairs. While stopped briefly to make some adjustments to the failing dilithium crystals, they are suddenly attacked by a Klingon warship that seems to come out of nowhere. When the threat is averted, the Klingon captain appears on the screen, and swears a blood oath to kill Kirk in revenge for killing his brother.
With that now hanging over his head, Kirk must divert to a planet in an unsurveyed sector, that has sent an application for admission to the Federation. As it is deemed that this must be answered without delay, the Enterprise is diverted there. After beaming down, Kirk and company find themselves unable to commit the smallest act of a violent nature. A virus has been created on Perry's Planet, which acts to disable the individual when the biochemical buildup to violent action is begun. With the Klingon ship in wait for them, the consequences could be disasterous.
Jack Haldeman is the older brother of Joe Haldeman, noted science fiction and Star Trek author, and an accomplished short-story writer on his own merits. Haldeman crafts a strong if short tale here, which seems to have been padded some from a short story length. Haldeman effectively uses the characters, and keeps them IN character, including giving some time to Scotty, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov. The writing is not soaring, but it is solid, and the story will keep the reader interested.
Fantastic Trek, Just Like an Episode.......2002-12-09
Having just finished the tedious Next Gen novel Ghost Ship, Perry's Planet was just what the doctor ordered. The Bantam novels in general were much more simple, streamlined affairs than the Pocket novels to follow. No space wasted on character interaction or inner monologues - just a bare-bones story (pun not intended).
Perry's Planet is almost magic in the way it evokes the original series. The novel sounds and feels uncannily like an episode. The plot, like so many of the original series episodes, is a recycled hodge-podge from other episodes, including a Landru-esque society and computer program, and a pacifying virus akin to the spores from "This Side of Paradise." A Klingon death vow starts the novel off with a bang but otherwise does not live up to its promise. Wonderfully concise, Perry's Planet provides a couple of hours worth of mindless, enjoyable entertainment.
A magnificent book.......2000-04-13
I daresay this is the best Star Trek novel Bantam company has published. This author really is the first one to realize Klingon concept of honor. A pity the others didn't until TNG debuted.

Customer Reviews:
Quick, creative, delicious.......2005-06-08
This is BY FAR the most clever cookbook I've ever used. I've had it for a while and just recently decided to use it as it is intended. I followed the shopping list and have been making the recipes for the week. My thoughts:
1. recipes are varied, interesting and delicious
2. recipes are easy to prepare, and quick to make
3. the shopping list takes all the planning out of weekly cooking.
4. because you only have to go shopping once, it is fun to see what the next meal will turn out to be.
Seriously, my husband is not a vegan and he has been eagerly asking me each day, so what's for dinner tonight! Because you know you have all the ingredients and they are so simple to make I almost feel like I am eating out each night trying something new. There really is a lot of variety and taste. These recipes were carefully tested because each and everyone so far has gone off without a hitch (and leftovers!)
This book is for busy single vegans........2005-03-26
I have been a vegatarian for about 7 yrs. I've always wanted to go vegan, but living with my parents I couldn't. Now that I'm old enough and living on my own, I've made the move to vegan. However, it seemed like I was always eating the same things and I wanted to try some new recipes. Of course being on my own, when I used other cookbooks I had tons of leftovers and was eating them for days. I saw this book while browsing Amazon and liked the fact that it is designed for busy single people.
I got the book a couple of days ago and so far have liked all the recipes. I love that fact that she gives you a shopping list for each week, and splits the book up into seasons. The recipes can be a little bland, but it isn't hard to add a little more flavoring to whatever you cooking. My only complaint with this book is that not all of the ingredients are readily available to everyone. I live in a small rural town in the Southeast. It is impossible to find some of the ingredients like soy margarine/butter or truly vegan cheeses. I could order them online but that is more expensive. It would be nice if she had alteratives for some of the harder to find items. Right now I'm experimenting with different things on my own, but true newbies to cooking and vegatarian/vegan diets might find it difficult trying to figure out what works if they do not have the ingredients available.
Best Cookbook Ever.......2005-01-27
I bought this book for a vegan friend and now want to buy it for myself. It is by far the best book for vegans or people who live alone. The recipes are broken down into a weekly menu with a shopping list at the beginning of each week. All perishable food items are used up within the week, saving money. There is a wide variety of recipes and they are all very simple but full of flavor.I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoy my new beverage of choice. Made from 100% organic soy, taste just like coffee and no caffeine. Finally, I got rid of that wired up feeling all day and feeling great. Look for it on the net by googling "s o yfee".
Excellent seasonal vegan cooking for one person.......2005-01-13
This book has includes dinner (and lunches on the weekends) for cooking for one vegan. Once a week desserts (fruit based) are also given. Each week comes with a shopping list for the meals you'll be cooking so you can easily shop for groceries. In addition, the book is separated into spring/summer and fall/winter recipes so you can cook with whichever vegetables are cheap and abundant.
On the negative side, there are not many seasonings used and most of the recipes come out on the bland side. That said, the amounts these recipes yield are quite large and sometimes I am unable to eat the whole batch! Overall, I give this book five stars because it has a great variety in the recipes it offers so you'll not get bored easily. Ingredients are easily obtained from any grocery store (a few items are specialized and are available at natural food markets).
This is the most used cookbook in my collection because the recipes are simple, quick and often use the staples of every kitchen. It really helped my transitioning to vegan diet. I highly recommend it for new vegans or those considering adopting the diet.
Perfect for the Single Vegan!.......2004-01-22
This wonderful cookbook is perfect for the single vegan. For each week, the book contains a shopping list of all ingredients needed for that week's recipes. No running to the supermarket to pick up additional food and no waste! I really like no longer having to divide the ingredients in recipes by four or six -- these recipes are made for one person. The shopping list is a great idea -- I appreciate not being left at the end of the week with 1/2 can of beans, for example.
I have cooked every single recipe in the book, with the exception of some of the desserts. The recipes are varied, both in type of food and in ingredients used. I have rarely come across a cookbook with as high a proportion of the recipes ones I would definitely cook again. As with any cookbook, there are a few nits:
(1) For a very few weeks, ingredients are missing on the shopping list. (Usually, it's only a carrot or an extra onion.)
(2) Only one recipe did not seem to work at all -- the dumpling recipe. This may be due more to my technique than the recipe.
(3) There are very few ingredients that can't be found in a typical supermarket -- I have been able to find everything at my local natural foods grocer.
This book has become the backbone of my food plan. I look forward to coming home to varied, easy-to-prepare meals -- often with enough left over for breakfast!

Customer Reviews:
Simple, Nutritious, and EASY!!!.......2007-04-12
My husband and I are vegetarians, but not vegans. I decided to buy this recipe book anyway, knowing I could always add eggs and dairy. Great decision! I'm an accomplished cook, but have reached the point in life where I no longer want to spend hours in the kitchen (I'm 67) and where easy prep and healthy meals are my chief interests. This is now my #1, go-to cookbook. I glance through it in the mornings, assess my larder (and Stepaniak includes a comprehensive list of things to have on hand), and plan the evening's meal. After years of trying to simplify complicated recipes, or make adjustments in meals planned for omnivores, I'm thoroughly delighted to have tumbled onto this precious cookbook. Now I'm going to buy another of her books, DELICIOUS FOOD FOR A HEALTHY HEART, confident I can adjust the portions for two servings.
Great for 2 and as your family grows.......2005-11-20
I have had this cookbook for years. It has served my wife and I well, and now that we have two young sons, it continues to serve us well. The recipes make just the right amount, but it is so easy to double recipes to good effect.
My wife, who is not vegan, often asks me to make the French Toast, and my sons really like the Peanut Butter Banana Pancakes. I really like the Corn & Potato Chowder, being from the midwest, but one of our favorite comfort foods is the recipe for Baked Macaroni & Vegetable Casseroles. We always double the recipe so that we have leftovers, and we add the "chicken" seitan I make from the Homemade Seitan recipe. The Lentil, Mushroom & Macaroni Stew is also excellent.
I don't care for the tempeh recipes, so I just substitute something else. The only recipe that I can remember not liking was the Breaded Seitan Nuggets.
My copy has a "Special Lay-Flat Binding" which I think is really smart design. It ensures that I'm always pulling this cookbook down off the shelf and using it, because it's so practical. I liked this book so much I bought the same author's "Vegan Vittles."
a good very basic little cookbook to get you up and running.......2005-09-25
This cookbook is great because it has all the things you would want in a little cookbook. That being:
1) Easy veggie-based recipes with ingredients easy to find or that you already have, for the most part. Seitan and nutritional yeast aside, you can find everything else easily.
2) Calorie and nutritional information breakdown
3) Plenty of tips for each recipe
4) A blurb on each recipe that gives good information and gives you the "feel" of the recipe and it's use.
5) Small quantities. Seriously, how many people need to make 6 servings of everything!?!?!
6) Esp. good for getting kids to eat healty. This book is really all about that.
This book can save you money because you don't need to buy too many ingredients that you don't end up using, and the author suggests ways to use the rest of what you have in another recipe.
This cookbook is made by a person who eats the things she writes about. I also like that she has a slightly Polish/Russian slant in some of the dishes. I have another book, 1001 Low-fat Vegetarian Recipes, and practically everything in there has some "southwestern" bent. That can get annoying. There are plenty of types of vegetarian dishes in every culture, and it's nice to see a recipe, for instance, that quickly gets you close to the taste of pierogis (if not the shape), without all the fuss.
I'm not actually vegan, but I really like and tend to use cookbooks that don't rely on meat in every freakin' entree, and which use vegetable protein.
This book is also good for just simple brainstorming on using what you've got. A basic staple book to refer to when you you don't think you have anything to eat. It's not anywhere near gourmet in style, but will at least jar your brain to think vegan about your food choices.
Great for Couples.......2005-08-23
I wouldn't say this is the most exciting cookbook I own, but we really seem to use it a lot. It really is very handy if you are cooking for two or one. A word of advice though; if you're cooking for two people and one has a big appetite like my boyfriend, you may find you need to make a little extra.
Great for small families!.......2004-08-12
I have many of Jo's books, but use this one the most lately, now that it's just the 2 of us at home. The recipes are simple, use ingredients I always have on hand, but most of all, are *very* tasty and delicious. I bought a second copy and gave it to my son to take to college with him, that's how great these recipes are!
I recommend this for any vegan single or couple.

Very good vegan book!.......2007-03-29
This is my favorite vegan cookbook so far! (I have several). It uses really simple ingredients, and the portion sizes are hearty. I will probably need to replace it in a few years because my current copy is getting rather beat up due to overuse.
Another reviewer wrote about the 'wrong amount of pepper' in a potato-kale recipe. I tried that recipe too, and since I really like pepper, it tasted great! But to each their own...
The Vegetarian Resource Group is also a great resource for vegetarian/vegan cookbooks and restaurant listings. I'm pleased that this cookbook came from them.
Good ideas for recipes.......2004-08-04
I was drawn to Vegan Meals since it was aimed at recipes for just a few people. I am the only vegan in my house, and I found this to be very helpful. It gave me ideas on good, quick meals, as well as what to keep stocked up on in my kitchen and pantry.
The downside of this book was that I found the recipes I tried to be kind of unappetizing. And one that I tried (something with potatoes and kale) had the wrong amount of pepper in it, and I ended up ruining all of my work and had no dinner. I think that in the future, I will have to try adding my own touches to the recipes to make them better for myself.
The resources in the front and back of this book are very helpful. I found a ton of simple, quick, and delicious meals and snacks to try, many of which I use almost every day. I didn't try all of the recipes, but the few I tried I didn't like. So, I guess it's up to you to venture out and try these; after all, I could just have a weird taste in food.
Showcases some of the best that vegan diets can offer.......2001-12-10

Customer Reviews:
Single vegan doesn't want single portions!.......2006-08-22
I find myself doubling the portions in this cookbook, not because they are too small, but because I've come to rely on eating my leftovers for lunch. I am a big fan of meals that keep well in the fridge or freezer - just because I often cook only for myself doesn't mean I'm not busy!!!
I agree with a previous reviewer who did not like the "meal-plan" format...especially since dinner is pretty much the only meal discussed here. There is no table of contents, and the indexing isn't the best. From what I've tried so far, the recipes are yummy.
This book is so great, I had to write a review!.......2004-01-13
I've never come back and written a review on Amazon before, but this book is so good - I just had to! I received the book for Christmas and tried a few of the receipes and loved them. This is my first week of following the "meal plan". The author makes it so easy to do all your grocery shopping and to cook simple, delicious meals. I am doubling everything and cooking for two. So far we have well enough for both of us plus leftovers for one or two lunches. When non-vegans smirk and say "ew, what do you eat?!" I am now proud to rattle off a list of gourmet-sounding recipes that sound enticing to even meat eaters, but are simple to prepare. The book is small (but has a 10 full weeks of recipes) and inexpensive - why not give it a try?
i think it's a good idea, but...........2003-12-26
i bought this used at a bookstore because i loved the idea of only cooking for myself and having shopping lists to go from each week, however, i have never cooked from this book because it simply turns me off. the menus don't seem varied enough, plus, i am the type of cook that likes to answer to my cravings and to recipies that make me feel passionate about cooking them. this book does not fit the bill.
I've learned something.......2001-06-30
If this book has taught me anything its how to make smaller portions. I came from from a big family and we cooked big meals. However, being a single parent, I had to change my methods or else be subjected to a life long experience of too much leftovers.
I'm not a vegetarian but the recipes are delicious. They are also quick and easy to prepare.
wow.......2001-04-23
For the single person or even a couple (just double everything), this is a great cookbook. It has weekly menues for lunch and dinner (5 weeks for summer and 5 for winter) complete with a shopping list in from of each week. This certianly makes meal planning a breeze if it is folowed!! All the reciepts are even in both metic and american measurements.
