Your biological age may be a lot different from your chronological age--for better or worse. Dr. Michael Roizen, a preventive gerontologist at the University of Chicago who appears perennially in the "1,000 Best Doctors in the U.S." listings, says that with the help of his RealAge program, you can reduce your biological age by up to 20 years.

He's compiled a list of 100 health-related factors, among them tobacco and alcohol use, diet, prescription and over-the-counter drug use, your parents' health, even pet ownership and the highest educational level completed by your spouse, and worked all these into a quiz to determine your "real age." If you've taken your health for granted, be prepared for a shock. He then explains how to follow a personalized age-reduction plan using a range of methods, from quick fixes (use a helmet while bicycling), to moderately easy changes (avoid sun and radon exposure), all the way to the most difficult changes (reduce the stress in your life). Emotional issues are given as much attention as physical ones; Roizen says, for example, that seeing a psychologist to help work through serious personal problems can reduce your chronological age by 8 to 16 years alone.

RealAge may appeal to Fountain of Youth seekers, but will be especially useful for folks who are out of shape and too overwhelmed to start a fitness plan, and for those who are understandably confused by the wealth of contradictory health reports in the news. Dr. Roizen has done an excellent job of organizing and explaining essential health information, from defining health concepts such as blood pressure (and explaining how to lower it) to distilling facts about diet, supplements, and herbs. Far from faddish, RealAge clearly presents only advice that's been proven effective in clinical trials. This is preventive medicine at its best. --Erica Jorgensen

4 out of 5 stars Reality Check.......2006-06-17

This book is an excellent source of information on the body's aging processes. It will educate the reader on ways to identify lifestyle choices that may have a negetive impact on one's health. Written with a negetive undertone, this is a real slap-in-the-face, a good reality check. Makes you aware of your unhealthy habits and gives you options of control. Emphasis on being responsible for your own health and happiness.

5 out of 5 stars This book caused be to change many bad behaviors.......2006-05-20

I read the first Realage book in 2000 and it is the book that finally got me to exercise, floss daily, eat nuts, wear my seat belt, take vitamins and start many other healthy habits. When you start thinking of your behavior as making you older or younger it really make you conscious of the fact that you are damaging your body. I have read hundreds of books in my life but the Realage books have caused more change in me than any other. Sign on to Realage.com and take the survey to see what your real age is, read the book, and change your behavior so you can live an extra 10-20 years, your family will thank you.
Examples:
Flossing your teeth will make you 6.4 years younger.
An ounce of nuts a day can make you more than 3 years younger.
Better monogamous sex can make you 2 to 8 years younger.
Lower your blood pressure to be 3 years younger.
There is much more..............read the book.

2 out of 5 stars Ignores detoxification and other things.......2004-01-31

I thought this book had some useful information when I first read it several years ago. After I read it, I stopped taking selenium supplements and decreased my daily dosage of vitamin C to 2,000 mg. Then I got a tumor in my neck (spring 2000), and most recently a breast tumor. I read that selenium actually inhbits the growth of tumors, so I am upset for having followed Roizen's advice. Also, I learned that one can take up to 10 GRAMS of vitamin C per day with very beneficial results. This vitamin also helps prevent and fight cancer. Finally, Roizen completely omits any mention of the need for regular detoxification. He says it's okay to drink tap water! I have lost my respect for this author and am now selling his book. It's out of date.

3 out of 5 stars Not a great read but some worthwhile stuff.......2002-10-23

"Real Age" is a nice addition to the self-help health book market with a unique approach that draws a line between your chronological age and your "real" age. The book is basically a schmorgasborg of practical info, none of which is really earth-shattering. Its the tables scattered throughout the book that show your real age adjustments for doing/not doing certain activities that makes this book. I found it both encouraging and empowering to see how things in my control can benefit my long-term health (though not all real age elements are under one's control). While some of the info is sophomoric(touting the benefits of a personal trainer), some of it is useful (detailed breakdown on vitamins) and make this a worthwhile check-out at the local library.

5 out of 5 stars REALAGE:ARE YOU AS YOUNG AS YOU CAN BE.......2001-09-24

I ORIGINALLY GOT THE BOOK FROM THE LIBRARY. I FOUND IT TO BE STRAIGHTFORWARD,EASY TO UNDERSTAND.IT WAS IN A FORM THAT CAN EASILY BE UNDERSTOOD BY JUST ABOUT EVERYONE. I FOUND THE CONCEPTS REASONABLE AND PRETTY EASY TO APPLY. THE CONCEPTS ARE SIMPLE AND DEFFINATELY DO ABLE. IT WAS HONEST AND NON-THREATENING.

Book Description

Remember your high school reunion? Even though everyone was the same chronological age, people no longer looked the same. Some stayed young and exuberant, whereas others looked as if they had aged ten years more than everyone else. Did you know that:

RealAge offers a revolutionary program that calculates the aging effect of different health behaviors ranging from diet and medication to stress control and chronic smoking, and enables you to assess your own biological age. Most important, it shows you how to design a specific path to improving or reversing your own aging trajectory, and it's easier than you think. The RealAge program is based on cutting-edge scientific research. Dr. Michael F. Roizen and his team have pored over 25,000 medical studies, evaluating what they tell us about aging and the prevention of aging.

5 out of 5 stars Southern Cakes hits the Sweet Spot!.......2007-09-19

Wow! Nancie McDermott has done it again with her new book, Southern Cakes. My great grandmother is originally from Louisiana, and many long visits to her house were enlivened by a special coconut cake, glazed chocolate cake or other old-fashioned Southern treat. The recipes in this new book remind me very much of those anticipated childhood desserts. As much as I love the recipes in Nancie's new book--like every single coconut cake (rightly given their very own chapter!)her Ocrakoke Fig Cake and the quirky Tomato Soup Cake, it's Nancie's delicious writing and her unique ability to illustrate the intense love affair Southerners have with their cooking--and their place in the world--that I truly love. I can't wait to see what Nancie will pull out of her (very talented) hat next!

5 out of 5 stars The personal stories alone are worth the price of this delicious book................2007-06-26

From the photographs to the thoughtfully-explained recipes, I am delighted with this book. The only thing that could make it better would be having a piece of each cake delivered with the book! Count me as a happy purchaser.

          5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome.......2007-06-23

The receipes in this book are the cakes that my grandmother made when I was a child. I can remember her in the kitchen baking all day and then placing a towel on the counter and displaying all her baked cakes for our family. The photography in this book is awesome. From the coconut cake on the cover to the buttermilk cake is a replicate of the real thing. The receipes are easy to follow and well written. If you love the southern heritage of cakes made by your grandmother or your mom, you'll find them all in this wonderful book. I found the ingredients to be readily available in my pantry and the stories about each recipe add to the interesting reading. A nice addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the pre-schooler and grade-schooler in your home!.......2007-08-15

I bought this for seasonal crafts a young child could do. I have another book which is similar but for everyday crafts, Household Items by Kathy Ross. If you're into recycling, this book is ideal for you. It would be rough trying to assemble the required items if you have a large group without cooperation from others or time. The other items required are the basics like construction paper, glitter, scissors, glue and then things like dried beans, colored pipe cleaners, and straw. I didn't see any copyable patterns so it looks like an adult would have to do those sorts of things.

As I bought the book for Halloween section and I have only glanced at the other sections...here goes.

This section is full of easy ideas from the preschooler to the older child. They could easily be supervised by a responsible teen. They look easy to do, but would be impressive to the child as well as the adult when completed.

There are decorated pumpkins without cutting, lots of cats and ghosts to make, and basic no-sew costumes to wear from adult or older children's clothing.

5 out of 5 stars Great Crafts for Every Holiday!.......2007-01-20

This is a fantastic book for parents, teachers, or anyone who likes to make crafts. Moms and teachers especially are always looking for ways to make crafts that don't cost much. This book shows you how to make really cute and original projects out of things we would recycle (or throw away!). I recommend it highly!

4 out of 5 stars Great craft book for kids.......2005-03-14

I got this book for my 5 year old daughter and 5 year old niece. They both love to make things and loved the items in this book. My daughter wanted to make so many things for each holiday, we didn't come close to making all of them. There are some items that are a bit lame, but the others make the book worth it. I only had to buy a few low cost craft items like felt squares, pipe cleaners, ribbon, and the like to make the items in the book. Everything else we had in the house (egg cartons, construction paper, material scraps, ...).
If you have "crafty kids" this is a good idea book for them. It would also be good for preschools, elementary schools, and churches.

"I know we eat too many sweets in the South, but that's part of our tradition, and if I couldn't find reasons to celebrate with a beautiful cake, mousse or fruit crisp, I'd invent excuses." So says Martha Pearl Villas, whose classic sweets and down-home cooking savvy are the subject of My Mother's Southern Desserts. Written by her son James Villas, cookbook author and food and wine editor of Town & Country magazine, the book presents nearly 200 straightforward recipes for mouthwatering goodies. Cooks on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line will be tempted by this accessible collection, as will aficionados of Southern culinary culture.

Organized by holidays and other typical Southern occasions, such as bridge luncheons and charity socials, the recipes include luscious cakes and pies; muffins, fruit desserts, and ice creams; brownies; and confections. Among these are Satan Chocolate Pound Cake with Chocolate Marshmallow Frosting, Secession Brown Betty, Real McCoy Southern Pecan Pie, Essie's Apple Dumplings and Butter Walnut Turtle Bars, to name only a few of Martha Pearl's original and heirloom "receipts." Accompanied by color photos, tips for success, and James Villas's notes on the special context of every dish, the recipes celebrate a vivid cooking heritage and a feisty but endearing master of its art. --Arthur Boehm

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rich, Southern-style favorites that are elegantly simple........2001-08-30

I am really big on Martha Pearl Villas's recipes because there is an elegant simplicity in her tastes, and this is true even of the richest desserts in this book. Often amusingly bossy and opinionated, she is absolutely adamant about not "tarting up" a dessert with extraneous flavors or ingredients. I tried her Confederate Peach Cobbler recently, and it was a real success with my family, including my thinks-he-is-a-food-critic husband. The fresh peaches were cooked just right -- not too sweet and neither too firm nor too soft -- in a crystal-clear filling that let the marvelous peach flavors come through, unobscured by unnecessary spices and extracts. The rich biscuit crust made with heavy cream was scrumptious, the perfect counterpoint to the simple filling. Another great example of such elegant simplicity is the Pineapple Upside-Down Cake, which also came out utterly delectable when I tried it recently. This upside-down cake was not cloyingly sweet like some, for it had just the right amount of brown sugar and butter glazing the pineapples and cherries, and the cake underneath was a simple sponge that was the perfect foil for the rich, caramelized glaze. Though definitely highly caloric, this cake, with its clear fruit flavors and light sponge base, seemed so light that I, surprisingly, felt I could have finished the entire cake in one sitting. I am looking forward to trying all of the recipes in this book. In short, you will find that Martha Pearl Villas does not "re-invent" (i.e., adulterate) the old Southern favorites just to sell a cookbook; these recipes are the real thing. I highly recommend (and own) all of Martha Pearl Villas's cookbooks for their very Southern emphasis on good, true flavors.

4 out of 5 stars Features Delicious and Impressive Desserts.......1999-05-20

Having not had the good fortune to be born a Southerner, I at least had the good taste to marry one! But because the cuisine of North Carolina is so different from my native Western Pennsylvania, I have been learning as much as I can about Southern cooking so that my spouse and I can enjoy the flavors of both regions. For desserts, Miss Martha Pearl and Mr. Villas have put together a staggeringly beautiful array of sweets for every conceivable occasion. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because some of the recipe directions are a little unclear: the Easter Moravian Sugar Cake, for example, tells you to dissolve yeast and sugar in water in a small bowl but never gets around to telling you when you should incorporate that mixture into your larger bowl of batter dough. While I didn't have any problems decipering the directions myself since I've been baking since I was eight years old, I think of the baking novice whom might get a little frustrated by the lack of detail. That said, this is a beautiful and exciting book made even more enjoyable by the anecdotes regarding family and friends. My only regret is that their first book, My Mother's Southern Kitchen, is out of stock and I can't find a copy anywhere! Kudos to Miss Martha Pearl and Mr. Villas for their wonderful offering.

          4 out of 5 stars A praiseworthy compilation........1998-10-18

"My Mother's Southern Desserts" is a praiseworthy compilation of recipes from Jim Villas and his mother, Martha Pearl. Her repertoire of sumptuous sweets is organized by holidays and special events. And each recipe has a side-panel, in which Martha Pearl pens an engaging bit of background on the dish at hand. Being both Southern and a dessert lover, I perused this volume with a growling stomach. A handful of dishes that I wanted to bounce up and bake included Chewy Peanut-Chocolate Chip Drop Cookies, The Delta Queen's Pralines, Chocolate Pecan Pie, and--believe it or not--mango ice cream! The book's layout is superb: Simple red dots and lines seperate the recipes' titles, comments, and lists of ingredients. And there are 16, full-page color pictures at the center of the book. Southern food lovers will crave this work.

4 out of 5 stars Changed My Life.......2006-06-12

Given to me for my birthday and resident of an untouched gift-pile for weeks, Donata Maggipinto's "Everyday Celebrations" hid in plain sight like a sleeper cell in Dayton until one Saturday afternoon when I lay on the couch vacillating between dozing and rude wakefulness, suffering from yet another in a decades-long series of sleep-depriving sinus infections, I reached out, lifted the book to my chest, and opened to Ms. Maggipinto's screed "Putting Patience and Pink Impatiens in Your St. Vitus' Day Observance."

Here was (is) a soul of constant fluorescence. Donata Maggipinto's instruction in decoration ("...pink impatiens placed directly in front of the television make every show a science-fair diorama...") and her make-do insights on religiosity and seasonality ("...if the in-laws have chosen to arrive in short sleeves, offer them linen ponchos--that match the napkins!") reminded me that life is what you make of it. This too shall pass. A sinus infection is not the end of the world. --D. Cunningham

              Book Description

How to Bury a Goldfish is an inventive collection of new traditions and rituals to commemorate and honor the many special moments and milestones in day-to-day life. Enjoyable and easy to follow, the rituals are short, cost almost nothing, and can be easily adapted to fit any lifestyle. The authors cover a wide range of life's events, both big and small, from helping a single friend begin a new home life, to making the passage into adulthood, to mourning the death of a loved one.

Featuring a host of celebration ideas, this remarkable guide addresses more conventional occasions such as holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, family dinnertime, and nighttime prayer, as well as more unique experiences, such as a teen's first job, a women's midlife journey, and an elder's move into assisted living. Through the art of simple ritual and ceremony, How to Bury a Goldfish allows readers to slow down, sit in silence, and savor all of the precious moments that enrich our daily lives. Rituals and ceremonies include: a daily renewal for the morning shower, a Valentine's Day ritual for a sensitive single, a commemoration honoring a child's first performance, and a Thanksgiving celebration for a couple.

              * Offers more than 100 original celebrations and traditions for a wide readership, including rituals for men and women, old and young, families, parents, and singles

              * Provides a wealth of new traditions for many occasions, from light-hearted to serious

              * Acts as a unique tool for honoring the ordinary, everyday events in our lives

              * Includes many observances for young people becoming adults and taking on adult responsibilities

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting and Useful Rituals for All Occasions.......2007-08-02

I had a copy of Ms. Lang and Ms. Nayer's earlier edition of HOW TO BURY A GOLDFISH, but a friend borrowed it and never gave it back. So I eagerly bought a new copy when this new Skinner edition came out, and it's better than before. The authors give charming insights into their lives and advice about how to celebrate all occasions. Burying a goldfish is one kind of ceremony; welcoming a newly adopted child is another. You should order two copies of this helpful enchanting book, because you'll be lending it to someone who won't part with it!
