Prescription for Nutritional Healing by nutritionist Phyllis A. Balch and James F. Balch, M.D., has long been considered one of the most trusted, comprehensive sources on the mind-boggling array of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other dietary supplements now available. Working from the premise that a good diet promotes good health, this third edition of PNH still starts with the basics: consume fresh produce, grains, and lean meats; avoid foods that are processed or high in saturated fat; cook using glass, stainless steel, or iron--never aluminum; and drink filtered water. The authors also stand by their claim that the government-prescribed recommended daily allowances are ridiculously low, and that the book's optimal daily intake for nutrients should be followed instead.
So what's new in the third edition? Along with now-accepted remedies, like zinc and echinacea for the common cold, the Balches also explore many of the newer supplements to hit the market: SAMe (recommended for depression and joint pain), phosphatidyl serine (mental acuity), red yeast rice (cholesterol), and 5-HTP (weight loss, insomnia, depression). You'll also find an expanded chapter on alternative therapies that encompasses Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, along with a hefty section on pain control that offers a grab bag of options such as acupuncture, biofeedback, guided imagery, chiropractic care, and massage.
Still, the bulk of the book remains the more than 250 health conditions--from everyday problems such as insect bites and bad breath to serious diseases including bulimia, cancer, and AIDS--and the nutritional protocols the Balches recommend for treatment. Since any number of supplements can be taken for the same condition, the Balches make sifting through the glut of information a little easier by separating their nutrient recommendations into four categories: essential, very important, important, and helpful. And they take a lot of the guesswork out of buying supplements by listing the brands they know and trust. Once again, the authors have squeezed in an impressive amount of information, including valuable sidebars on topics such as the dangers of aspartame; how to choose a calcium supplement; common heart problems and procedures; cancer risk factors, diagnosis, and treatments; and sports nutrition. This is not relaxing reading, but it's enormously useful. While the material can be dense, the authors still manage to present it in a straightforward manner that's understandable even for readers without a medical degree. --Norine Dworkin

Okay, but not great.......2007-10-11
I thought this book was okay, but I wouldn't call it a classic. I did hold onto it, and it is on my bookshelf, but I rarely refer to it. When I do, it's just to get a basic description of an illness, not for the remedies it recommends. I felt like it just repeated what everybody else is saying, and didn't really have any original information to offer.
Prescription for Nutritional Healing 06.......2007-10-04
I am not a devout herbalist, but I don't like to take a lot of medications either. If I can heal myself or prevent problems with diet, exercise, therapies, vitamins, minerals, or herbal supplements, then I would prefer to!
I wanted one natural healing book. Just one- for reference. So I read through a TON of books at 2 different bookstores and at Whole Foods. I choose this one because it covered SO much.
It has sections on almost 300 ailments (for example: anxiety, hair loss, hypoglycemia, arthritis, stress, migraine, depression, indigestion, flu and bee-sting) and it lists the vitamins, minerals, and herbs good to use for each problem. Compared to my internet research, it recommends many of the same things and more. I love that it also gives advice on what not to take, what not to mix, how much, and what problems can arise (no other book seemed to do this as well). In addition, there is info on diet, exercise, and alternative therapies. In the front of the book, she explains herbs, minerals, the different types of enzymes, and more. I also enjoy the essential oils list in the back.
It is a little confusing when she lists some supplements by Brand Name (I don't like that). And the herbs are more of a post script to each list, but if you want more on herbs she does have a separate book just for that ("Prescription for Herbal Healing").
I am happy with just this one book- plus the advice of the wonderful folks at Erewhon and Whole Foods (who, as it turns out, reference this same book!).
Great Reference Tool.......2007-09-28
What I love about this book is how thorough it is. Not only does it cover a lot of ailments, but when it lists helpful supplements, it explains exactly how they work, recommended dosage, and the importance of it. It also give suggestions for lifestyle changes (for example, foods to avoid, the importance of exercise, etc.) Amazing. It's organized well, you can look things up by ailment OR supplement.
My go-to reference for family health..........2007-09-22
I have a bachelors degree in holistic health, and was introduced to this book years ago when I first began studying alternative medicine. I have used this reference time and time again in treating myself and my family for common ailments. It never fails to yield useful information, always directing the reader to conventional medicine for more serious illnesses. An extremely useful tool for family healthcare.
Great Reference.......2007-09-18
This is a great big book with a wealth of information about a great number (a few hundreds) of ailments, what causing them, and how to deal with them the natural way. With close to one thousand pages this is a complete resource of medical problems from A to Z. It is well researched, well referenced, and well written. It is also very simple to use, all ailments being ordered in alphabetical order. It is an excellent reference book, a health bible that should be readily available in each household. If you have a health problem I suggest checking what this book will tell you about it, before going to your doctor.
Another book that I also highly recommend is Cure the Incurable

Good book for your library.
supplemental reference.......2007-03-08
This is a fairly good book with a very good selection of supplements and a decent amount of info. for each one listed. My only complaint is that the index is hard to use, in other words,, if you are looking up a certain thing, you may have to look at several different names for it,and sometimes have to thumb through the index under different headings. The big expensive hardcover book found in health stores is essentially the same thing, only this softcover version is significantly cheaper, a plus for the paperback version.
Unexpected.......2007-01-10
In the past I have purchased the first 2 volumes and they were fantastic. This one left me cold. It was small in size and was not as easily readable. Locating different herbs was difficult and frustrating. I much preferred the layout in Volumes 1 and 2.
Presciption for Nutritional Healing.......2007-01-05
not what I expected. I'm familiar with the "larger" edition, which was what I expected, not the condensed version.
Great gift too.......2006-12-23
Prescription for Nutritional Healing should be a staple in every home. These are the same reference books they use in the health food stores to help you choose what supplements to take for your particular ailment. Everything is listed by symptom which makes it very user friendly. There are listings for critical "must haves" and also some options for things that could be useful. I've used it many times and have found it to be the authority on wellness that might save you a trip or two to the doctor. I can't live without it.

I loved this book before I run in trouble.......2001-10-30
I owe this book for four years and loved everything in this book before I run in a trouble. I have followed this book advise for bowel cleansing and injured my colon by using a prescription for cleansing enema, listed in this book. I think author never tried this recommendation on him self and never used it on his patients. Otherwise he would never suggest to other people use this enema recipe and even more on weekly basis. I done it only once and cannot recover already for three months and probably never will. I looked for information on the Web unfortunately after I done this procedure and every piece of information I found says about straining your colon with this procedure. I cannot believe such a prominent doctor would not know that. This make me think this book is dangerous for public.
Following this book advise I have injured myself.......2001-10-18
Following this book advise I have injured myself and try to recover already for 2.5 months. In chapter about "fasting and cleansing" authors of this book suggests do cleansing enema with lemon juice every week. I did only once with much less strong concentarion of lemon juice. I have strained my colon and muscles so bad, I am not sure I ever recover.
A Great "Supplement" to their first Prescription book!.......2000-08-04
After owning the wonderful Balch bible on nutritional healing, I knew I had to own this one. It is a perfect companion piece. The Balches are so knowledgeable in the field of nutriional supplements (which we all need) that this book is easy to access. Their factual documentation is corroborated at a great site for supplements, PapaNature, that my entire family has used with wonderful, positive results in terms of service and product quality. This site contains numerous links to information on the supplements that the Balches recommend for complete health. I recommend this book as a wonderful resource and PapaNature as a wonderful source.

A must have compact version of the "big book" to take with you to the health food store, the supermarket or your health care provider. Quite a lot of valuable information on vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements is contained in so small a book. Well worth every penny.

Reading Rick Rodgers's Kaffeehaus is like strolling through the streets of three of the world's most romantic cities--Vienna, Budapest, and Prague--where the coffeehouse is the center of the universe and that little something sweet to go with your afternoon cup is considered high art. Eleven chapters on subjects ranging from "Sweet Yeast Breads" to "Strudels" and "Sweet Dumplings and Noodles" cover the gamut of sweets you're likely to find in the classic kaffeehauser. Rodgers provides recipes for such legendary treats as chocolaty Sachertorte, flaky Sour Cherry Strudel, sugar-dusted Banana Gugelhupf, jam-filled Linzertorte, and rustic but soul-satisfying squares of Plum Cake.
A renowned cooking instructor and cookbook author, Rodgers has developed the patient voice and attentiveness the job requires, and these qualities shine through in his inviting recipes. Though the book focuses exclusively on the impressive desserts found in coffeehouses, rather than those that are home-baked, Rodgers has developed recipes accessible enough for recreating such scrumptious treats in any home kitchen. Filled with culinary lore--from the scandalous story of Rigo Jansci, the handsome gypsy violinist who lured an American millionairess to leave her husband for a passionate affair and inspired the sinful chocolate dessert that now bears his name, to the great Sachertorte controversy that gripped Vienna in the 1830s--Kaffeehaus is a treat for armchair travelers and adventurous bakers alike. --Robin Donovan
Book Description

Rodgers visits such culinary landmarks as Café Slavia in Prague and Café Sperl in Vienna, sampling apple strudel, the Emperor’s pancakes, hot chocolate, and other classics and gathering the recipes (and secrets) of master bakers. With an attention to detail developed through years of teaching, he explains how to make the perfect accompaniments to a cup of coffee, as well as spectacular endings to elegant meals.
Filled with food facts and lore (from when coffee first came to Vienna to the great Sachertorte controversy), Kaffeehaus is a treat for armchair travelers and cooks alike.

Kaffeehaus: Exquisite Desserts from the Classic Cafés of Vienna, Budapest and Prague.......2007-07-26
The book is nice, in that the recipes seem very authentic. But I was disappointed that there weren't more pictures. There were a few pictures to add a little interest and color, but not as many as I was expecting.
Not a bad recipe in the bunch.......2007-06-17
My sister and I have been baking from this book over the last two years for all our important celebrations, and everything recipe we have tried has worked perfectly. I have never owned a cookbook that was so consistently excellent. Thank you Rick Rodgers. Please write more cookbooks! We just served the poppy, apple, walnut bars last night--not too sweet and made up perfectly.
From the Author to Pio.......2007-01-10
Thanks for your kind words about Kaffeehaus. The recipe you are looking for is in the book on page 130. In fact, it is on the cover of the book! Did you look in the index? It is there as Esterhazyschnitten, because the cake is typically baked as a large strip and cut into slices (Schnitten). If you wish, you can bake rounds and cut them into wedges. While is an authentic recipe from Budapest, lately I have been making it a little less sweet by reducing the sugar in the buttercream to 1/2 cup from 2/3 cup. Happy baking!
