Expanding Science.......2007-04-22
We are children of the world, the universe, the solar system, and ours is a solarian legacy. We are not mere products of natural selection or clay worked by a Maker. We are instrumental parts of a conscious, self-learning universe. The longer we ignore the implications and obscure the facts, the longer we will grope blindly (and dishonestly) through a narrow alley of conscious awareness.
What causes this blind groping? What causes us to block out the idea or realization that we, as holographic portions and children of the universe, are probably endowed with the same miracle producing power we delegate to gods and angels? The cause of our blindness is our steadfast refusal to take responsibility for who and what we are. We deny our identity and buy into the notion that we are victims and lowly creatures... and for all we know, there may have been such a thing as alien intervention at some point in our evolution, which may have fostered this feeling. Nevertheless, we seem to feel secure when we conclude that our best minds have everything figured out. The truth is, we avoid responsibility every time we argue that, "experts say," "science says," "the bible says," "God says!" How many people are in mental chains because of someone who claims to speak for God?
Thousands say they have had encounters with aliens or advanced beings (ABs), yet, instead of seriously studying these encounters in an attempt to develop some understanding of life and consciousness, governments and mainstream scientists write off such claims as delusional or fraudulent. Meanwhile, believers may secretly worship/fear ABs as our good or bad superiors instead of viewing them as our other-dimensional siblings.
Myths, stories and channeled histories of Atlantis persist, yet we make no formal effort to uncover evidence or shed further light. The same goes for investigating the paranormal, uncovering our relationship to plants and animals, or finding whether there was ever life on Mars. These are just a few of the many things written off as unscientific (or at least, not financially profitable). If we study the connections rather than the differences between things, we might uncover important patterns and hidden laws. We've had science, now we need a metascience that looks for dynamics. We need a 21st Century discipline that includes rather than excludes evidence-- in fact, we need to develop a perspective that transcends science and religion. A bold call for a new and more inclusive "Science.".......2007-03-29
Being an avid ancient history buff has taken me in some really interesting directions lately. So much is being discovered so fast that it's a real challenge to keep up. It has become quite evident that mankind has been heading down a deteriorating road ever since the stuff really hit the fan somewhere around 11,500 to 13,000 years ago. There is so much of human experience that has been lost. This whole caveman\stone age thing until the birth of civilization 6,000 years ago is ridiculous. It is refreshing to see the disconcerting habit of 'mainstream' science to ignore whatever doesn't fit its entrenched consensus, posing as fact, so rigorously assaulted. Mr Von Ward's call for a new metascience is long overdue. Want to see where your prejudices lie regarding who and what you are, and what mankind has been up to for the last 100,000 years or so? Read this book. A bit dry in parts, but very thought-provoking. The Hermetic principles of the ancient world still have much to teach!
A Book on Modern Paradoxes.......2006-04-13
This is a good book covering the paradoxes of newfangled scientific approaches such as Quantum physics and parapsychology - two "modern" approaches of the last century, which have transformed Humanity's potential perception of both its worldly reality and prior metaphysical concepts. Ordinarily, people tend nowadays to lump all such material as "new age" stuff, along with mumbo jumbo on things such as aliens, reincarnation, aromatherapy, spells and soothing music, etc. No doubt all these are part of the vast new "genre" spawned by such new awakenings, but this book is definitely an upmarket type as it deals in detail with the theoretical and scientific investigative aspects of this new direction. There are of course umpteen such books, and umpteen are fit to be called excellent. During the last 20-30 years of the previous century, the developed world produced a sea of "human potential" literature arising from this new awareness, aimed at self-help and improvement. Thousands of prophets and teachers also appeared, some fake charlatans, some average, some remarkable... Like all such enlightened thinkers, Paul Ward also sees a niche for himself as one such messenger, and suffers from the naivete and idealism of believing in the totality of his solutions to the crises from which modern humanity suffers. These however seem to be the drawbacks of most such enthused teachers. Sugesstions such as "if we just do this" or "if we behave like that" are simply not valid determinants of the course of human fate, and sadly won't cure its maladies with the wave of such a magic wand, even if they succeed in bettering them by 90%, which many modern innovations appear to have done individually as well as collectively, for those affected by them... If that were so, history would be a different tale altogether, and wouldn't suffer from the shortcomings we now lament and call the shackles of reality. Or Francis Fukuyama's "The End of History" concept would be valid... (or perhaps he really meant the end of a certain type of historical process, which is what I forsee eventually). It takes more to effectively better the collective human condition and change history than just adopt new ideas openly. That is the lesson of reality.
Our Solarain Legacy.......2004-08-27
Whether you are a beginner in your search for how we fit into this universe or well down the road, OUR SOLARIAN LEGACY is a "must read." Paul Von Ward has done an extraordinary amount of research for this excellent book. It is broad and comprehensive thus providing and overview of many areas of research for the beginner to further consider and to help the well-traveled pull together loose ends. With insight and clarity he emphasizes that this self-learning universe is a manifestation of conscious energy that has created us as way of experiencing itself, and that we are designed to actively participate in its expression. With that in mind, we never have to feel separate from anything else.
A very informative, encouraging look at ourselves.......2002-11-17
The author presents a very thoughtful, clearminded overview of humanity and and our unique place in the cosmos. This work is really an overview of the many areas of our thought, culture and tradition which require reassesment and change. It is with my most hardy recommendation that you read this book and benefit from Mr. Von Ward's seeming endless supply of wisdom and insight. Because of the liberal references provided it can also serve as a launch point for many areas of further study. The ethical and moral conclusions he draws from an honest and fearless consideration of the broader aspects of ourselves leaves us with a foundation as eloquent as any of the world's great religions, if not more so. Do yourself and perhaps the world a favor; read and learn what this book has to teach us.

Sol as a Weapon.......2006-03-28
Norman Spinrad is one of the long-term masters of science fiction, and this was his very ambitious debut novel from 1966. Here we see big ideas already developing, but Spinrad's ambition was unfocused, and this book creaks under its own weight. The story gets off to a pretty lousy start, in the middle of an over-described but under-conceived space battle with faceless alien enemies called the Duglaari. Spinrad tries to instill real science into his fiction, but accomplishes little more than made-up terms like "lasecannon" or "smell-organ." However, the middle of the novel gets more interesting, as Spinrad drops the pretensions of military sci-fi for pretty intriguing human speculation. We learn that in this distant future, humans have spread throughout the galaxy but are being slowly exterminated by the Duglaari, an alien race that are wonderfully and creatively inhuman. The bizarre society of the Duglaari is probably the most eye-popping aspect of this book. Meanwhile, the people who stayed behind on Earth isolated themselves from their fellow humans, and evolved into a new society called the Solarians, with all human potential realized. The Solarians have now reemerged with a humanistic plan to defeat the coldly logical Duglaari.
These are all bodacious concepts for a debut novel by a young writer, and Spinrad offered some pretty strong philosophy on the nature of humanity and man's potential, while exploring the differences between the righteous Solarians and the directionless humans of the rest of the galaxy. But this is where the ambition of the novel started to become a liability. There are many holes in Spinrad's conception of the Solarians, especially in the short amount of time in which they've evolved, and the implausibly of the social upheavals that got them to this point. Then the end of the novel degenerates into increasingly ridiculous political and military machinations, which get more and more hyperbolic and sensationalistic. We are rewarded with an avalanche of over-enthusiastic big thoughts on humanity's future, which are the thinnest possible result of Spinrad's earlier philosophical explorations. In the end, you can appreciate the ambitious big ideas of this novel, but you can only hope that Spinrad would develop more focus and conciseness as he went forward. And he did. [~doomsdayer520~]

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Life has been going along happily for most people. Then, a seriously bad alien menace appears, and they have no hope of stopping it.
Their only hope lies with the Solarions, and no-one has had contact with these people for hundreds of years. One man has to contact them. Once accomplished, the Solarians have a plan, but the people are not sure that their plan isn't worse than what will happen already.
What science fiction should be.......2006-10-23
I have liked Norm Spinrad for many years, especially after fondly reading his off beat short stories such as Carcinoma Angels. He's not well known but this early effort is a wonderful read. He anticipates many advances we now take for granted. I bought an original paperwork in a half-price bookstore the other day and am flying through this sci fi adventure space opera story about a future battle with against the alien Doogs. Wish Hollywood would read this stuff and make movies out of it rather than crap like Riddick and 5th Element, or Star Wars for that matter.

Callenging the old paradigms.......2000-02-01
Mr. Von Ward brings a greater view of cosmic possibilities without limiting himself to old metaphysical or scientific views thus bringing the concept of a "new renaissance" in metascience. Relating the ancient Hermetic Principles to quantum physical events, he brings the Hermetic ideas to a new modern level of understanding.
His view on the origin of consciousness is inspiring and challenging. He writes: The "river of creative consciousness continually shaping matter and energy never ceases. We paddle our canoe in it taking advantage of eddies and whirlpools ...the challenge is to identify where the paddle of individual intent can be inserted in the flow of life".
His hypothesis of advanced beings is analogous to long held notions of the existence of invisible helpful beings and angels. The difference is that he supports his theory with his diverse knowledge (physics, science, psychology and history) thus remaining non-religious in his approach, and free of the new-age pseudo-spiritual beliefs.
This is a great book for those appreciating a good challenge and are willing to inquire further into their experience
The First Manifesto of Metascience.......1999-12-05
"Solarian Legacy" demonstrates a true spirit of open-minded inquiry, and therefore of science, as well as a highly original thinking in its exploration into that which the author terms Solarian Legacy, the "esoteric" story behind and beyond the "exoteric" story that humanity as the solarian, the cosmic being, has thus far developed. This esoteric story, the solarian legacy, which the author develops through his remarkably broad and bold synthesis of science and history, is fascinating and thought-provoking. This book is a definitive work in the grand synthesis of human knowledge, and a "must read" for those who have the courage and curiosity (cosmic curiosity) to venture into the frontier of knowledge and beyond-to the vast horizon of the unknown. The book makes us reexamine what we think we know, and shows us solarians how much, and yet how little, we know, and how much more we can know the universe that we have inherited.
Of the many original ideas that fill the space of 300 pages, I have found the author's evolutionary hypothesis to be of a particular interest, which posits the existence of ABs (advanced beings) and their intentional influence over (human) evolution-the existence of intentional exogenous influences over the evolutionary history-explaining the phenomenon of speciation or evolutionary discontinuity (punctuated disequilibrium) that is unexplainable by the standard Darwinian or Neo-Darwinian theories which acknowledge only chance and endogenous influences, not design or intention, or exogenous influences.
The author Paul Von Ward is no armchair intellectual. He is moved by a profound love for humanity, and by concern for the future of the planet. In the finest tradition of the Western philosophy, he is a lover of wisdom and a lover of life. This book is the first official manifesto of metascience (the synthesis of philosophy and science), and the author makes himself, through his authorship of this remarkable book, the first official metascientist. I highly recommend this book to all thinking people who are aware, or are becoming aware, of their solarian heritage and of their cosmic responsibility as necessary participants in the evolution of life in the universe.
Solarian Legacy Reclaims Our Multi-dimensional Reality:.......1999-11-10
Solarian Legacy provides an answer to the fragmentation and alienation of current reductionist thinking which isolates we humans into believing ourselves to be mere on-lookers in a mechanistic universe. Through a wise and comprehensive consideration of the multi-dimensional nature of our cosmic being, Paul Von Ward returns to us our rightful heritage: our Solarian Legacy. We re-discover ourselves as an integral part of and participators in an evolving universe in which we may play a dynamic co-creative role.
From his amazingly rich background of experience and study, Paul Von Ward draws together threads of our rich history-universal wisdom of the ages; metascience; evidence of lost advanced civilizations; the role of Advanced Beings in jump-starting new levels of consciousness; the nature of causative mind; untapped human potential; and much more-to open our eyes to a fuller spectrum and perspective of our multi-dimensional reality.
Solarian Legacy is "required reading" for all who view the new millennium as an opportunity to take co-creative action in building a New Renaissance of Cosmic Awareness.
The truth about who we really are!.......1999-10-26
In Solarian Legacy, Paul Von Ward does something no one else has: Created a brave new synthesis of who we really are. Although his writing diminishes no one, he does challenge contemporary beliefs through the provision of evidence--facts--causing readers to THINK and RE-EVALUATE how much we know and don't know about ourselves, our universe and our origin. The science is flawless as is the logic. I've read it twice and will probably read it again. It is a book to which I will refer often.
A "Tour de Force!".......1999-10-04
In less than 300 pages,Paul Von Ward brilliantly and precisely describes our Solarian Legacy. For those of us looking for a new planetary myth which resonates in both the heart and the brain, liberates us from artificial shackles, and evokes our full cosmic potential,"Solarian Legacy" stands alone as the best book of many decades. A treasure to read and re-read over the years, and a wonderful way to gift Friends.

Book Description
Here is the first English-language cookbook from the Parisian cooking school whose very name epitomizes excellence. Le Cordon Bleu at Home provides a solid understanding of the philosophy and skills taught for nearly a century in the school's nine-month "Classic Cycle" course. Moving through three stages, from basic to advanced techniques, this in-depth approach to classical French cuisine offers a series of easy-to-follow menus and recipes that correspond to classes at the school. Nearly three hundred beautiful color photographs depict finished dishes, serving ideas, and cooking techniques at each stage through completion.
Learning to cook means mastering the fundamentals. In "Part One: Getting Started," you'll learn how to roast, poach, fry, saute, braise, and stew. You'll learn which cuts of meat are most appropriate for a dish, which utensils to use and how to use them, and preliminary preparations that simplify tasks. The menus focus on basic dishes -- from roast chicken and lamb to pan-fried sole, apple fritters, and poached fruit.
"Part Two: Perfecting Skills" takes you through pastry-making and introduces such preparations as pâtés, soufflés, consommés, and more. This is where you'll find such glorious dishes as Daube d'Agneau Avignonnaise (braised lamb cooked as it is in Avignon), Tournedos Baltimore (tenderloin steaks with Chateaubriand sauce), and Pilaf de Volaille à la Turque (Turkish-style pilaf with zucchini and oranges), created by Henri-Paul Pellaprat, one of the school's most famous instructors.
Ultimately, no one truly "finishes" learning -- the best chefs endlessly hone their skills. For advanced cooks, "Part Three: Finishing Touches" emphasizes the creative aspect of cooking.
Le Cordon Bleu is the crème de la crème of cooking schools, and this is an indispensable volume for everyone interested in learning about the ageless art of French cooking. Combining time-honored traditions with the latest, most sophisticated methods and a variety of recipes ranging from standard at-home fare to classic, regional, and modern dishes, this is the ultimate state-of-the-art book on French cuisine.

I found the recipes to be wonderful. It is organized by simple menus to complex menus. Try to make a different menu very week. It is great way to learn.
However, the pages of my book are falling out. The binding on the book is not the best in the world. As long as I don't loose my pages, I am still doing well.

A great introduction to French cooking.......2005-04-12
I would echo another reviewer who suggested that Julia Child's "The Way To Cook" is the ultimate learn-to-cook book, and her "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" is the ultimate learn-to-cook-French book, but this is a good introduction, too. I've been using this cookbook for years, even before I went through a Cordon Bleu culinary program here in the U.S. I'd also recommend getting the Cordon Bleu Practicial Techniques Book, which is excellent and has step-by-step photos of a lot of the techniques talked about in this book. My favorite practical book is probably La Varenne Practique. I've made about half of the recipes; if you follow the directions carefully, you usually learn something new and it's cheaper than going to Paris!
Technique Technique Technique.......2004-08-07
Many think of cuisine as a creative art.
They see their favorite chefs tossing in a bit of this, a bit of that, and voila! A magnificent masterpiece!
Anyone who has put in the hours to learn an art of any kind, be it playing the piano, painting, or yes, cooking, knows: technique comes first.
What is technique? It is the efficient coordination of movements/actions, applied in a consistent way, to produce a desired effect. In cooking, it is trussing a chicken, chopping in various ways, creating a stock, simmering a sauce. It is creating your mise en place, understanding how long each step of a recipe takes.
As an avid home cook (a pure amateur), I heartily recommend this title from The Cordon Bleu. Using a progressive program of instruction, based on their own diploma program, it incorporates technique into a set of classic recipes. Techniques are developed and elaborated where necessary, and in graded steps. For example, a basic white (Bechamel) sauce can be embellished with cheese (Mornay).
The Cordon Bleu is known as a conservative bastion in the world of cooking. As such, I felt that some of the recipes are for dishes better placed in a museum than served at home, much less a restaurant. (A summer salad made with tomatoes, boiled carrots and cauliflower. Not my choice to serve at a dinner party. But the accompanying fresh mayonnaise recipe is fantastic!) And yet, even these add to the charm of the collection as a whole.
Le Cordon Bleu at Home is a one stop volume for classic French cooking, and is a great stepping stone for more advanced cookbooks, many of which assume a thorough knowledge of French techniques (e.g. the Charlie Trotter series).
fab fab fab.......2003-03-01
The recipes in this book are amazing. I've been going thru each recipe one by one. Even the recipes that I thought I wouldn't like turned out to be a fab surprise. I've learnt so much abt cooking since I started the lessons. The book goes from easy to difficult recipes. This is definitely a good buy.
Expands your culinary abilities................2002-02-28
Le Cordon Bleu at Home is an exciting book. It demonstrates classic French cooking techniques and menus accompanied by beautiful photography!! It is a step by step book arranged in lessons/chapters to be followed at your own pace. While not every menu item may be to your liking, there is enough variety that you can progress through this book to add to your culinary skills and interests. Learning the basics of classic French cooking is both interesting, entertaining and beneficial. This is a great book to learn and experiment with, for anyone who has a passion for food.

impress your guests.......2005-08-03
How many cookbooks do you have on your shelves where you might cook just one or two recipes from the book, and the rest don't appeal? I am fussy about buying cookbooks since there are so many "free" recipes available through friends, magazines, newspapers and the Internet. But I have not regretted buying this one and I also bought a copy for my son, a francophile.
The roast quails with rice stuffing (page 215) initially looked daunting but the glossary gives step-by-step instructions on how to bone out a quail. Amazingly, it worked and I presented this dish recently to a dinner party of eight. I doubt I have ever served a more impressive looking course or one that tasted so superb. The sauce was to die for.
The poussin recipe in herb butter was also wonderful (my son served it to us one night and then I served it to guests, knowing in advance it would be great), as was the chicken en croute. So far I have not been disappointed with anything I've tried.
Excellent CookBook.......2004-09-13
A classic must have!
All classic recipes that will impress your guests and yourself.
Very accureate and foolproof instruction, never failed with this book.
Outstanding & inspiring -- my favorite French cookbook!.......2003-12-30
...Top reasons why I turn to this cookbook more than any other:
* The recipes WORK! And they are GREAT! Some recipes I've tried: Shrimp Bisque (amazingly, in comparison to a recipe I tried from Cook's Illustrated, the one here is a bit simpler AND tasted better!), Apple and Parsnip Soup (great Thanksgiving soup!), Duck Salad with Plum Dressing (if cooking this for appetizer, I would use a lot less duck breast than asked for in this recipe--7 oz per person is too much), Duck a l'orange (awesome! My guests loved it!), Cider Apple Chicken with Mushroom Sauce (delicious--I substituted regular brandy for Calvados, a French apple brandy which I couldn't find), Roast Pork with Prunes and Armagnac (truly a hit when I cooked it as the entree for Christmas), Pears Poached in Red Wine (better than a recipe I got from a class).
* Each and every recipe is beautifully illustrated with a picture of the dish. For me, the "occasional but serious home chef", the pictures inspire me and quickly give me an idea of what to create for the finished product. None of the other books have such beautiful pictures for every recipe.
* Each recipe comes with an estimate of Preparation Time and Total Cooking Time. This gives me a quick idea of how complicated the dish is gonna be. A word of caution though: the given times are for pros! When I first started cooking French, I found that I had to DOUBLE the times given in this book; now I add an extra 50%! However, on a relative scale, this feature is still helpful.
* It's mostly adjusted for ingredients available in USA (at least in Northern California) and terminology is mostly American.
Like Lindaýs review below, I think Adrianaýs review below is unfair--the book does state that it is a collection of Le Cordon Bleuýs best recipesý-thatýs one of the reasons I wanted it and do not have an issue with it being a ýcopycatý. Ultimately, I am grateful for this book because it has helped me create many successful menus and dinner parties. So much so that it compelled me to write my first review on Amazon.com! Bon Appetit!

Slight but mighty.......2007-04-16
This surprisingly good cookbook may look slight but each page is packed with valuable information and hints to help even a novice produce excellent food right away. Recipes are graded as to level of difficulty, also a plus. I do a lot of baking and it's nice to see so much valuable information about pastry collected in one place - even the veteran quiche maker will find some good tips (how to prevent a soggy crust, for example). The savories section is particularly valuable, offering an enticing array of items suitable for appetizers, most of which can be prepared in advance.
Excellent cook book.......2007-01-08
I think this is a great book to make quiches and very easy to follow. I recommend it, its greatly priced too.

If You Have Only One Book On Sauces ..........2005-02-07
...make it this one. It has all the main sauces fron salad dressings to dessert toppings, and most everything in between. The recipes are simple, easy to follow and produce simply wonderful results.
A good sauce is what makes a meal go from very good to memorable, and there are many books with convoluted and time intensive approaches to sauce making. What I like about this book's approach is its simplicity of preparation and the excellence of the results. It is as nearly fool proof as one can imagine.
It's also a great value for the price.
The Idiot's Guide to Blue Ribbon Sauces.......2000-10-30
This short but excellent sauce cookbook is a "must" for anyone who delights in elegant French sauces and dressings, but is put off by recipes requiring exotic ingredients or 2 hours of prep time. The recipes in this book seldom have more than 4-5 readily available ingredients, take no more than 15-20 minutes of prep time, and best of all, they work! Everything from home-made mayonnaise to mango salsa, from hollandaise to buerre blanc. The explicit directions include "chef's tips" on how to serve the sauces, prevent separation, and so on. Truly first-rate!

Adequate tastes, adequate recipes.......2001-10-15
I borrowed this book for a dinner party, and while I won't buy my own, there are a few recipes I'd make again -- a suitable description of my overall happiness with it.
Good things: the recipes are accessible to novice cooks (like me), minor errors and amateurish skills are (mostly) ok, and we were able to pull off all of the recipes we tried.
Bad things: there are a lot of gotchas, like assumptions about tools that novice cooks may not have; the portion measurements were regularly off (every dish we made didn't come out to the right amount -- too many, too few...); the ratings of easy to hard seem way off.
Overall, some hits (pronto puff pizzas, salmon/trout roulade) and some misses (cheese-filled mushrooms) with the crowd, and I wouldn't rush to make any of them again.
The Cordon Bleu should be ashamed to put their name on this!.......1999-08-13
Mundane recipes with little preparation information, but terrific photos. Buy it if you only like to look at food. Inexperienced cooks will be confused by the lack of preparation instructions. Serious cooks will find this book dull.

Regional French Cookbook Review.......2001-01-17
This is a good introduction to the art of "casual" French cooking. The recipies are good, with a good mix of entrees and some wonderful desserts. While some effort on the part of the editors has been given to expressing the weights of ingredients in ounces as well as grams, you might want to have a scales as the more common US volumetric measures are not always given. In addition, the editors could have done a little better in suggesting US equivalents to some of the French ingredients. Except for these issues, though, it is a good cookbok, nicely illustrated, and it lies flat on the counter.

Excellent chocolate recipes.......1999-11-18
I bought this book for the appealing picture of a chocolate gateaux on the cover... the recipes inside are very good, especially the chocolate flan and the white chocolate and pistacio fudge. Highly recommended.

Classic and Tasty.......2000-04-05
This book includes several classic pasta dishes, using a broad variety of ingredients. You may find the perfect dish, respecting your personal dislikes (in case you don't like anchovies, you will easily switch recipes and find out another tasteful one). However, I expected more creativity or a more technique oriented book by the Cordon Bleu seal. Although, it does not innovate in pasta cooking or even increase your skills on making fresh pasta at home, it is a very good classic italian guide.
