5 out of 5 stars The Sacred Dancer's Bible.......2006-05-26

This book by far is SUPERB! I consider it my dancer's bible because Rev. Stephanie provides the sacred artist with so much vital information for our body temples, spirit man and call to the ministry of the arts. Every dance leader should have a copy in their own personal library. Even if you are not a dance minister, worshippers alike will appreciate this book.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR TRUE WORSHIPPER; LEADERSHIP AND LAITY ALIKE.......2002-07-15

I am very excited about this text becuase it is not written just for the dancer or the sacred artist, but for anyone who desires an encounter with God in their temple. It contains the clearest, easiest-to-understand material regarding the purpose and power of movement ministry. Leadership and laity alike will experience and comprehend how the WORD can become flesh and delivered to the Body of Christ in a movement message. They will learn how, through the body (our temple), God allows the Word, to shatter the windows of darkness, pierce the principalites, and bring deliverance to souls in our nation and the world. I would highly reccommed this text to everyone because of it's sound biblical teaching on the call of dance as ministry , and the rightful place of the Arts in the Body of Christ. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Must for all Musical Theatre performers!.......2006-07-06

This book is fantastic! It has a lot of useful information in it, and it's excellent for preparing you for an audition. I had an audition for Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! and after reading this book, I went in there feeling totally prepared, and guess what? I nailed the audition! I got 2 callbacks and now I'm in the show.
This book tells you everything you need to know. From song choice and preparation, to what to wear and how to present yourself. A definite "Must" for all those who wish to get in to Musical Theatre.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and Fun.......2006-03-23

I am a musical theatre major at the University of Oklahoma, and I purchased this book for a class on auditions. I found however it was a much better read than a standard text book. Mr. Oliver presents a large amount of very useful tips and techniques while keeping the book very "readable". The stories he recalls from his experience provide an insight into the art of auditioning, and they prove quite amusing for anyone who has been through the ringer of an audition on any scale. The book clips along quickly and by the time you are finished you are sure to have a smile on your face and many useable pieces of information in your head.

1 out of 5 stars not too impressed.......2002-02-04

I am not too impressed with this book, nor its author, Donald Oliver, with whom I had the "priviledge" of taking a series of his classes. His book, and consequently, his methods, are far too rigid; the guidelines in the book are presented to the reader as if they are the ONLY way to do an audition, and if you don't do it HIS way, you are wrong. He even provides a list of songs NOT to sing. However, I believe that a successful audition is not about following a set of rules, but rather what works for each actor. A song might be overdone, but if one can do it, and do it well, then, by all means, do the song. Additionally, Donald Oliver is a pompous, arrogent man, who "name drops" to try to impress his students, and believes that his way is the only way. Do not buy into the "rules" of this book. If you must read this book, only use it as a reference. I recommed the book "NEXT" by Steven M. Alper instead.

5 out of 5 stars HOW TO AUDITION FOR THE MUSICAL THEATER covers the basics........1998-07-14

Donald Oliver does a brilliant job of covering all the audtioning basics in this entertaining, yet informative book. Oliver uses witty and often hysterical anecdotes to describe the neccessity of preparation, confidence, and common sense for an audition. Everything from headshots and resumes, to callbacks and casting agents is covered in a timely and humorous fashion. Oliver does a particulary fine job of describing the best types of audition songs and where to find them. Several helpful Appendices (located in the back of the book) give helpful information; lists of places to find sheet music and performing-arts texts, as well as a list of the most overdone audition songs. This is a must-have book for every actor seeking employment.

5 out of 5 stars Jump right in!.......2000-09-30

This is a must have book for anyone who loves or works with children. Not only are the stories usable within an existing curriculum or creative dance class framework, the book enables all educators to use Ms. Landolf's sequencing to create a movement story of his or her own. I have been using this approach within my own creative movement class (Story in a Box) for two years with great success.

Thank you Helen!

5 out of 5 stars great book to tap into the imagination of young children!.......1998-02-03

A great book for introducing children to basic movement concepts using imagination and stories. The stories are well written, humorous, and allow children to become immersed in a world of playful and fun movements. Landalf and Gerke's introduction, about 16 pages, covers just about everything a good creative movement teacher needs to know about understanding how to teach movement concepts to young children.

    Book Description

Since the 1960s, visual art practices--from body art to minimalism--have taken contemporary art outside the museum and gallery by embracing theatricality and performance and exploding the boundaries set by traditional art criticism. Such practices prompt us to reassess our ways of contructing meaning from art, making us receptive to the element of performance both in the processes of art production, and in the act of interpretation itself. Performing the Body/Performing the Text explores the new performativity in art theory and practice, examining ways of rethinking interpretive processes in visual culture. This collection undertakes two parallel projects: exploring art practices which perform the subject, and examining ways in which modes of performativity in contemporary art offers new models for interpreting artworks. Demonstrating how modernist art criticism attempts to fix the work with more stable sets of aesthetic meanings, the contributors argue that interpretation needs to be recognised as much more dynamic and contingent. It does not come `naturally' at the moment of contact with the artwork, but is worked out as an ongoing, open performance between artists and spectators, with meaning circulating fluidly in the complex web of connections between artists, patrons, collectors, and between both specialised and non-specialised viewers within the arena of encounter. Offering its own performance script, and embracing both canonical `fine' artists such as Manet, De Kooning and Jasper Johns, and performance artists such as Vito Acconci, Gunter Brus and the Sacred Naked Nature Girls, Performing the Body/Performing the Text offers radical re-readings of art works and points confidently towards new models for understanding art.

        Book Description

Lights go up, the actor takes the space, and is perceived by the audience. Communication has begun. The Articulate Body: The Physical Training of the Actor considers the unique responsibility of the actor to convey, through his physical being, the thoughts and feelings of the theatrical event. The actor's training must provide a process through which the actor gains the physical skill, imagination, and confidence necessary to be as articulate with his body as he is with words. This book attempts to re-think and analyse a contemporary actor's physical needs, looking at the actor's physical training not as a series of skills, but as a skill in itself, specific to the actor. Exercises are included to serve the actor, teacher, director, movement director and actor's choreographer as a point of departure in applying the principles and concepts of the book to their own work.

            Book Description

Hailed for his humor and passion, the internationally acclaimed performance artist Tim Miller has delighted, shocked, and emboldened audiences all over the world. Body Blows gathers six of Miller’s best-known performances that chart the sexual, spiritual, and political topography of his identity as a gay man: Some Golden States, Stretch Marks, My Queer Body, Naked Breath, Fruit Cocktail, and Glory Box. In Body Blows, Tim Miller leaps from the stage to the page, as each performance script is illustrated with striking photographs and accompanied by Miller’s notes and comment.
This book explores the tangible body blows—taken and given—of Miller’s life and times as explored in his performances: the queer-basher’s blow, the sweet blowing breath of a lover, the below-the-belt blow of HIV/AIDS, the psychic blows from a society that disrespects the humanity of lesbian and gay relationships. Miller’s performances are full of the put-up-your-dukes and stand-your-ground of such day-to-day blows that make up being gay in America.

5 out of 5 stars Draws heavily upon the author's life as a homosexual man.......2002-04-12

Body Blows: Six Performances by seasoned performer Tim Miller is an impressive selection of dynamic, vivid, performance plays drawing heavily upon the author's life as a homosexual man in a society that at best distrusts, at worst condemns gay and lesbian relationships. The personal, solo performances contain explicit and engaging language about human sexuality, ethics, and the specter of death in this vividly compelling series of singularly powerful monologues. Body Blows is a welcome and highly recommended addition to professional and academic theatrical reference collections.

4 out of 5 stars Good Visual Tool.......2007-07-03

This book is a good visual tool. It lacked slightly on the actual technique side. Not enough detail for the actual design of a photo. Was able to work around that however.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the novice.......2007-05-09

For such a small book (page-wise), it conveys an enormous amount of information. Each page contains a photo with a textual description of the design philosophy behind it.

The concepts are presented quickly and without any extra frills. In many cases, I found myself overwhelmed with information without a great deal of elaboration, so the central concept of each photograph did not always come through clearly.

I would recommend this book for intermediate photographers. If you're a novice, I would heartily recommend Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera (Updated Edition).

4 out of 5 stars My first serious photographic composition handbook.......2007-04-19

I have first bought this book in 1986 and, I believe, I have learned a substantial lesson from it throughout the years.

True, the book is not for impatient seekers of an instant gratification, or for people who need to be guided by the hand through the process of learning. But, in my opinion, that's its strength and not weakness. It makes you strive to understand the author's vision and concepts he presents. If you get step-by-step instructions on how to obtain any kind of a result (not just in photographic composition), the best you can count on is learning how to imitate or emulate.

The key to successful teaching is to stimulate the learning person to think, experiment and practice on his/her own and to trigger creativity in them - and this task is amply realized by Bill Smith in his excellent work.

By the way, his book is as much relevant to me now - in the digital era - as it's been twenty years ago.

3 out of 5 stars Useful Supplement to First Edition, 1985.......2005-06-29

The first edition of this book is one of my two favorites on compositional matters, the other being Michael Freeman's Image. The first edition stands out among all other books on composition and design in that Smith presents composing from the point of view of Gestalt visualization, presented theoretically by Richard Zakia in Perception and Photography and its update, Perception and Imaging.

The value of this second edition to me is to supplement the first edition with the new photographs. I don't think the second edition stands well on its own.

What the first edition did much better is mainly in the captions to the photographs. In the first edition, Smith discussed at length the visual aspects and structure that were present in each photo to explain how these aspects caused the eye to move throughout the frame. The captions in the second edition are much less devoted to the structure of the image and more like so many others' books in talking more about how he came upon the opportunity to take the image.

The text in the first edition is also more deeply written, while that of the second repeats the first, or cuts some good material.

I have spent several years, intermittently, finding what has been written about composition in photography and other two-dimensional visual arts, and my conclusion to date is rather grim. Using various databases, I have found several dozen books going back to the late 19th century. In general, the best writing on composition is out of print by many years.

I have not been able to find any U.S. art program that teaches composition or design as a stand alone subject; it is almost always blended into drawing classes as exercises and critiques. I'd like to hear that I am wrong about this. Composition is still taught as its own subject in several curricula in Germany.

For photographers, especially amateurs who do not undertake long training programs, a thorough look at the elements, principles, history, and techniques of composition with lots of diagrams, decently sized illustrations of good, bad, and almost, and many comparative problems is long overdue.

The approach that Smith took in his first edition is a significant component of part of what I have in mind.

My recommendation is that if you buy the second edition, then seek out the first to read over and over again with the second edition along side.

There is some useful information about composition and design in the first section, but the bulk of this book is full of generalities and common sense information that won't be of much use to the aspiring photographer. A better option is John Freeman's "The Photographer's Guide to Composition."
