Customer Reviews:
tiny overpriced.......2007-06-12
Book is very tiny, less than five inches by 3 and a half inches. It is a mini taken from a full sized book. Way overpriced.
not happy.......2007-04-11
I was disappointed in this book,if I had seen it on a shelf before hand I would have bypassed it all together.
Very little information and not enough listing for referrence use.
Would not recommend to anyone.
extraordinarily beautiful but TOO big!.......2006-08-11
This is an incredibly beautiful picture book with HUGE closeups of beetles. Since I am an entomologist & artist, it is easy to see why I bought it. However, I am not sure what audience this was aimed for. There are only six pages of text at the beginning that serve as an introduction to the beetles and the rest of the book is all photographs. Some of the photos show a whole beetle on one page and a detail of its body on the facing page, and most of the details were not terribly interesting. I never thought I could say that pictures of gorgeous beetles could be TOO big, but I think that is the case with this 10 x 13 1/2 inch book!
A work of art.......2001-12-03
This is a beautiful and unique book; the photography and printing are outstanding, and the images of the beetles are simultaneously gorgeous and bizarre.
Amazing. Nature exceeds fantasy........2001-11-27
This book contains a most colorful collection of creatures.I had never realized that the family of beetles encompassed such variety in colors, shapes, and forms. As an artist, I would recommend this book to anyone who delights in images celebrating the bizarre and the beautiful in nature.

Customer Reviews:
cancelled the trip, but great book.......2007-07-15
I used this book (and others) to plan a fabulous flyfishing, camping vacation. Then Hurricane Katrina hit. I still peruse the book, waiting for my next 2 week vacation...
Lots of information .......2007-06-18
There is a lot of information in this book. If you are looking for information on fly fishing in Idaho this is probably the most concise book to get. Information covers everything from the Henry's Fork to small lakes you would need to hike in to. There is probably more information in this book than you will ever need.
CONS: some of the info is old. I believe the last revision of this book was 2002 and even then some of the information was out of date. Just double check before you head out. There is a lot of urban fishing in Boise and I would have liked to see some more coverage regarding that. The book just skims over it. Its doesn't detract from the book in a major way but if you don't want to leave the city to fish its great stuff to know.
PROS: Lots to read. A great index to help you get right to the area you are looking for, hatch information, Detailed maps, Restaurant, fly shop, hotel, lodging, camping information. (although some of it is no longer correct) 450+ pages of content
If you are looking for an everything Idaho guide for fly fishing this is the one to get. The other Idaho guides like the Fly Fishing Idaho: A Quick, Clear Understanding of Where to Fly Fish in Idaho (No Nonsense Fly Fishing Guides) and Idaho Blue-Ribbon Fly Fishing Guide (Blue-Ribbon Fly Fishing Guides) don't cover nearly as much water as this does but they do seem to be a bit more detailed on the water they do cover.
A really helpful guide to fishing Idaho.......2001-07-26
This book is the best Idaho guide I have seen. It has clear directions (especially for people who are not familiar with Idaho), plenty of maps, and good complimentary information such as fly shops, motels, and restaurants. It is well written without being condescending, yet it is of just as much use to the experienced flyfisher as it is to the novice. I have not tried out all the streams and lakes listed (obviously), but Retallic and Barker's descriptions and evaluations match those of the fly shops on the internet as much as could reasonably be expected. If I could fault anything, it would be that the book is 5 years old and many things can change in that time. I would really like to see an update. Other than that, I would rate it 4 ½ to 5 stars.
highly informative, well written, encyclopedic in knowledge.......1998-09-02
Retallic and Barker know of what they speak. The writers live near, and fish, the water of which they write. It is refreshing to see a "hook and bullet" book that does not try to browbeat you with the authors casting expertise or remembrances of the West of long ago.
This is a very good, easy touse guide on idaho water. If you are going ther, buy it.
Very good and through book.......1998-08-10
What an excellent guide! Very through. Great maps. The book covers every drainage in Idaho from ice out to ice over.

Idaho fly-tyers are innovators by necessity. This mostly rural state, with large areas of designated wilderness, is not the sort of place where anglers can always run around the corner to pick up a few hot flies at the local shop. It makes sense, then, that there's a guidebook devoted solely to a state with a wide variety of fly-fishing opportunities and a renowned history of fly-tying. Thomas gives a brief overview of a tradition that dates back to 1901 when Carter Harrison created the Trude as a joke (a joke that caught on big), then launches into an alphabetical who's who of the many varied patterns that have evolved over the course of a century. While eschewing step-by-step tying instructions, he details requisite materials and includes a few notes about the history of each fly and its proper usage. Some flies, like Kaufmann's Stimulator, while not developed specifically for Idaho waters, are included because of their popularity. Final chapters cover in brief selected Idaho fly-fishing waters and key flies.

Enthusastically recommended for Idaho-bound anglers!.......2000-08-06
In Best Flies For Idaho, Greg Thomas draws upon his experience and expertise as an angler to take the guesswork out of deciding what flies to use when fishing Idaho waters. Compiling more than 100 patterns developed in Idaho's fly fishing mecca, Greg goes beyond photos and materials to the fishing fly inventors themselves, revealing how and why these flies were created and how best to use them. If you are planning a fishing excursion or vacation in Idaho, begin with a thorough reading of Greg Thomas' Best Flies For Idaho!

Whether chasing steelhead in Hell's Canyon or panfish in one of the state's many reservoirs, Fishing Idaho will help you find the right place to dip your line. Dividing the state into regions--complete with maps and area information (camping, docks, boat ramps, etc.)--this is a useful guide for plunkers, spin casters, and fly-fishers alike. Major (as well as out-of-the-way) lakes and streams are covered, as are the author's suggestions for best bets and catch-and-release areas. Whether you live in Idaho or just plan to fish there, Fishing Idaho is a valuable resource for the state's vast angling opportunities.
Customer Reviews:
A good but not great guide to Idaho waters.......2001-07-26
While this book is useful, I feel it falls short in a number of areas. The evaluations of the major waters are good, but those of the various secondary streams and lakes are cryptic, maybe necessarily so, and there are virtually no directions to any of these. The reader is given the name of a secondary stream or lake and a couple of lines evaluation. No directions, not even a general location other than the large portion of the state in which they are grouped. Joe Evancho appears to know what he is talking about, but he doesn't do a good job of passing that information on to the reader. I would rate this book about 3 stars (out of 5) and could recommend it if you don't have access to Retallic and Barker's Flyfisher's Guide to Idaho.
A must for a visitor to Idaho. Usable, complete, & smart..........1999-07-19
I just completed my first extended visit to Idaho. I bought this book not expecting much, like most fishing books...This is the exception! I was able to select some out of the way spots, and I was never let down! I rented boats, found access, met lesbians (oh just kidding) The BEST fishing book I've read to date! Bob Aydelott
This book is a great catch........1998-12-19
Fishing Idaho, An Angler's Guide is one of the most useful guide books I've ever had the pleasure to read. Mr. Evancho has gone to great lengths to cover every river, stream and lake in the state of Idaho. He does so without giving away any secret fishing holes, but the information is there for the determined angler to find those special places on his or her own. The book also includes other information useful to anyone plying the backroads of Idaho -- information on camping, boat ramps and air strips. You can tell that a lot of work went into producing this fine book. It makes a great gift for the angler on your list.
Outstanding in its detail and description of Idaho fishing.......1998-12-17
I don't need 1,000 words to describe this book. Just one: TERRIFIC. I purchased the book in Michigan, traveled to Idaho and found the information to be super good--from finding fishing spots based on written directions and maps. Accomodattion informtion was right on and Idaho is definitely a beautiful place. The book shows and tells how to go about fishing in Idaho whether you fish with flies or hardware or bait.
Customer Reviews:
OK book .......2005-01-20
I though this book was pretty good, but then again I am from Idaho and so I know where most of these places are anyway. The fly chart at the end was very helpful, but he book does tend to make everything sound "soo gorgeous" trust me its pretty but it aint heaven. The author obviously is biased toward slot limits and catch and release etc.. I can see how this book really wouldn't help someone from out of state looking for some good fishing, the author gives bad directions and instead of going in to depth of the species, size, weight, and type of flies for the streams, it assumes that you should know. Other than that its pretty good, the pictures are Ok, but Its not woth $11 if you ask me.
No praise in Phoenix.......2000-04-17
Pictures were very disappointing....text was far too brief and offered little or no fishing advice. Access information was almost non-existant. No index. I returned the book.

The Henry's Fork of the Snake River in Idaho needs no introduction, and neither do the notoriously picky and sizeable trout lurking beneath its placid surface. But if you want to catch these fish, you might want to check out this edition of the River Journal series. The book's large, color format, sumptuous photography, and lively, descriptive text bring the river and its angling possibilities to life. Like other volumes in this series from Frank Amato Publications, the river's history, wildlife, hydraulics, and fishing conditions are described in detail for the angler's benefit.
Book Description
This River Journal is one book in a continueing series highlighting the premier North American fly fishing rivers. For continuity, each issue is authored by one experiences writer/angler. Professional color photographs show the river in all its seasonal moods. Helpful area maps provide access information for anglers including river drifting, campgrounds, boat launching, shuttling, etc. There is much practical, insider fly-fishing help including timing of different insect hatches, matching flies to use, lodging, guide and fly shop services, additional bibliography, map sources, phone numbers, and addresses.
Each book in this series provides curious anglers with an in-depth, total experience of one river per issue and its fish and fly fishing opportunities: its beauty *through color photography), its fly fishing throughout the year, its natural history as well as angling history (including noted personalities who have contributed to the fabric of the river's fly-fishing lore), and the special fly patterns created for the river as well as standard patterns that work well, all beautifully shown in color plates.

One of the very best fishing guides in print!.......2006-08-01
Wow! A truly superior guide for fly fishing Idaho. The author has assembled extensive maps, seasonal information, local regulations, hatch and fly recommendations, and numerous practical tips presented in a very user-friendly format. Great for both novice and seasoned anglers. It exceeded my expectations in every way and sets the standard for regional fishing guide books. I will definitely purchase other "No Nonsense Guides." If I don't catch fish armed with this information, I should just buy 'em at the supermarket!

Book Description
Every fly fisher has a favorite stream, the one that comes to mind when reminiscing about fishing. A stream can be special because the fishing was extraordinary, because of the people who were involved, because of the setting, or for any number of reasons.
This book collects memories of 18 years of fishing in the author's favorite stream. He recounts excellent days of catching wild cutthroat trout, days shared with special friends and family, and rare encounters with wildlife. What do you do when you encounter a moose standing where you want to fish? How enrapturing is the sight of river otters playing in an emerald-green pool? How thrilling, and disappointing, is the sight of a bear swimming through a pool just as you were about to fish it?
Special people enter the stories; some make only a trip or two, others become regulars, and one is lost forever. This book is rich in stories that made this stream so special...favorite flies, good friends, and beautiful countryside.

Book Description
Fly fishing is a sport demanding patience and an almost Zen-like attitude. In places like Idaho, it is a passion for many. Randy Ashton takes the reader on a photographic journey through some of the most picturesque and even top-secret spots across the state, where the fish are big and the waters run cold.
Customer Reviews:
Very disappointed.......2007-08-16
This is the only book that I have ever returned to Amazon for a credit. I was hoping for something that my husband, who is an avid fly fisherman, and had fished most of the places that were filmed, would find familiar pools, and terrain. The colors were so vibrant, absolutely nothing looked natural. Perhaps if it were considered an art book, it would please some.
Stunning photography.......2007-01-10
As a fly fishing author and photographer myself, I keep pretty close track of the competition. Randolph Ashton has shot to the top of the pack with his stunning shots of his home waters in Idaho.
