Different Take on the End of the World.......2007-01-03
Hours before the world ends, Sean decides to take the three hour drive to his former girlfriend's house so he can die in her arms. He says goodbye to his parents, takes his dad's gun, and drives off towards his girl's house. He makes some stops that aren't necessary, such as to his favorite diner, where the proprietor shoots at him for walking out with a glass. People act in unbelievable manners at times in this book, and the narrator's description of his mother was a bit offputting.
Then he encounters some villians straight out of Mad Max who are throwing women out of a camper van. He picks up one of the women and they go after the two crazy men. After that situation is dealt with, they go to a house in search of a car (his Explorer ran out of gas) and end up helping a couple deliver a baby. These are a few of the things he stalls around with as he makes his way to his ex.
Along the journey he does plenty of drugs, thinks back to his time dating the girl, and gets in a car wreck. After the wreck, there is a brief "anti-psychotic episode" and the story gets back on track only to get bogged down in a rediculous subplot about wild lions.
Will he make it to the girl's house? You will have to read it to find out. It is a very short book and the print is pretty big, so it won't take long to finish and it is quite entertaining. Except for the part about the lions, which made you wonder if the whole thing was a dream. Shapiro is an author I would check out again.
excellent thriller.......2006-08-14
Sean always thought he had plenty of time to make something of himself until six weeks ago when the government proclaimed that a meteor was going to strike the earth; best estimates were 60,000 would survive the impact. On his last day of existence, Sean spends it with his beloved Selma, who ended their relationship to start seeing another man before the pandemic collision was announced.
With a few hours left in the countdown, Sean drives off into the "sunset to be with his lost love. On a deserted road, he picks up a previously kidnapped woman who persuades him to rescue the others. When that is completed they head up to someone's home to get a car and wind up delivering a baby. Will he get to Selma before the people of earth are wiped out?.
Eric Shapiro's fine tale with its limited cast will remind the audience of some of the classic disaster tales from the 1950s and 1960s like On the Beach. The story line is action-packed, but as the countdown continues, readers will begin to believe that no Bruce Willis will save the world from Armageddon. Instead the plot is an insightful character study of what one person finally understanding that life, IT'S ONLY TEMPORARY, and must choose what to do while the clock ticking towards certain death nears
A great, quick read..........2006-02-08
The premise of Eric Shapiro's It's Only Temporary is pretty simple, and to be honest, not terribly original. A giant space projectile (a "rock...far too giant for words" according to our first-person narrator) is hurtling towards Earth and is going to destroy
99.9999% of life on the planet. The story's been done in novel and movie form many, many times over. Or at least, that's how it appears on the surface.
Shapiro's novel grabs you initially by placing the action at just 10 hours before impact (as it is, society at large was only forewarned about its imminent extinction six weeks prior). Our protagonist, Sean, has decided that he wants to be with his ex-girlfriend, Selma, when the world ends. Good news is, it's only a 3 hour drive away. But of course, if the story was all good news for him, there'd be no fun in reading.
Sean takes off to see his girlfriend, who knows he's coming and eagerly waits his arrival. Along the way, Sean bumps into various other characters, all trying to cope with the impending catastrophe, and has some heart-thumping misadventures. He does some growing up, some flashing-back, some philosophizing, scrutinizing, heroism and selfish thinking.
This story has a wealth of emotion in just 108 pages that most "end of the world" stories can't squeeze into 300+. At times it almost becomes melodramatic, but thankfully manages not to cross that line, leaving you feeling genuinely touched, not manipulated. The lightning pace means things never get boring, although some chapters felt rushed (an animal attack near the climax--though given a unique approach--in particular felt too short). In a story like this, where we're residing in one character's head for the duration, it is important for the protagonist to be someone we can identify with and care about that. Sean is a character that you come to root for, who even in his less than stellar moments is still someone you want to see victorious. He's the star of the show, if his character weren't endearing you wouldn't make it past Chapter 1, but no worries in that regard, because Sean is a complete, honest and very human hero.
If Chuck Palahniuk did the apocalypse this would be it!.......2005-11-28
If you knew in a few short hours earth would be destroyed how would you spend your precious time? With family? Friends? Doing all those horrible things you've always REALLY wanted to do? If you're Sean--a recent somewhat aimless college graduate-you take to the road to find the one girl you ever really loved (and lost).
Eric Shapiro has done a dangerous thing in "It's Only Temporary": he's written an apocalyptic love story. Wait, don't stop reading because of the "love story" part! This book is so well written, so stylish, so intense that, when you finish, you won't feel like you've read a love story. You'll feel like you've just been on a trip through a hellish apocalyptic world that's pulling apart at the seams with REAL people. There's the key: Shapiro's characters feel like living, breathing people with real problems, real worries, and real desires trying to deal with an insane situation.
Imagine Chuck Palahniuk rewriting "Love Story" and "The Stand" as a single tale then going back and trimming it to the absolute bone and you've got something in the ball park of "It's Only Temporary". If you're a fan of reading at all do yourself a favor and read this book!

Insanity at it's best!.......2005-09-09
Animal trainers introducing "human" prey? People sorting out a hit list? These are just two elements of madness Eric Shapiro's It's Only Temporary portrays when the end of the world is at hand.
Perpetual goodbyes with parents to last erotic episodes with a loved one are all scenarios Eric Shapiro paints to the reader to get them into the insane thinking of a human being faced with the world's upcoming demise.
Eric's usage of first person POV is just the right angle to delve deeper into one's mind. We, the reader, get an opportunity to live Sean's final hours, read his thoughts, travel the zany road of misfortune and suppositions of the human race. The adrenaline rush runs through you from page one up to earth's conclusion.
If you are searching for a chilling tale of how humanity loses grip with reality when the world is at its last stance, then It's Only Temporary is Highly Recommended. A roller coaster ride of emotions will keep you glued to your seat.

From the supplier: The US temporary employment industry is currently the subject of intense criticism. Rising use of temporary employees, which is part of the larger trend of contingency employment, is being blamed for countless workforce reductions that occur across several industries. Temporary employment is also seen as a way out for employers from providing their workers with the usual benefits that are granted to regular and full-time employees. Critics claim the temporary employment results in the economic and psychological incapacitation of workers. Temp workers often face discrimination and fail to secure promised permanent jobs.

From the supplier: Baltimore Sun Publisher Mary E. Junck had to withdraw her original objection to a story heralding the return to the community of MBNA Corp, a large credit-card company. The return seemed to mean just a boost to the economy and 2,55 new white collar jobs, but the newspaper story disclosed a possible conflict of interest involving county executive C.A. Ruppersberger. Junck objected to the story but after turmoil at the newspaper was forced to withdraw her objections.

Feeling hungry? How about some Snozzcumbers for a snack, or a Fresh Mudburger for dinner? Or perhaps you're in the mood for Stink Bugs' Eggs. Fans of Roald Dahl will recognize his peculiar culinary inventions from his many books--now, these dubious delights are collected all together in Roald Dahl's Revolting Recipes, a compendium of dishes that sound worse than they really are. Stink Bug Eggs, for example, are really deviled eggs with some food coloring and a special, added ingredient (parmesan cheese or asafetida) to make them particularly aromatic. Mr. Twit's Beard Food consists of mashed potatoes, hard-boiled eggs, mushrooms, and cocktail franks cunningly arranged. Each recipe is simple to make, many are delightfully disgusting to contemplate, but all are easy on the palate. Roald Dahl himself would have been delighted to eat these ravishingly revolting recipes.
Book Description
Who but Roald Dahl could think up such mouthwatering and deliciously disgusting foods as Lickable Wallpaper, Stink Bugs Eggs, and Eatable Pillows? Fun and inspirational!.......2006-12-31
We got this cookbook for our 7 year old daughter for Christmas because she is a huge fan of Roald Dahl's books. She instantly went crazy for this cookbook, and even her 3 year old brother is fascinated by it. The recipes are so much fun, and the pictures are a wonderful combination of food photos and illustrations. We've already enjoyed the book so much that our daughter has decided to have a Roald Dahl party for her birthday in March, featuring snacks and foods from the cookbook. We are even planning on making goody-bags for the guests with several yummy treats inside. I'm so glad we found this cookbook and can enjoy it as a family!
Try the bird pie!.......2006-01-18
My family and I have had loads of fun making Roald Dahl's recipes. We are eager to try all of them and think it is an ingenious accompaniment to Roald Dahl's wonderful books. It is wonderful because it has everything from the snozzcumbers from The BFG to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's lickable wallpaper. It is a great shame that Roald Dahl is not here today to be able to cook from this book.
Delicous recipes it is!.......2005-11-23
Roald dahl has finally made a little much of a cookbook. Try some of his awesome recipes and taste it. It's awfully delicous!!!

A total blast. My friends loved the candy coated pencils best. Great for sucking during class. A fun book. With easy to follow instructions. Even my 9 year old sister loves it. YUMMY!

a fun read, but not great recipes.......2006-03-17
I own this book along with the orignial Revolting Recipes. While the premise of the book is lots of fun and may encourage kids to get into the kitchen, the recipes themselves are quite disapointing. None that I've made have turned out well. Magic Green Crystal: into the garbage. The Whipple-Scrumptios Fudgemallow Delight was a pain to make and it tasted awful. Many of the recipes have missing or vauge directions, such as Pishlets' "Spoon into the baking pan and spread evenly", but they don't say what size baking pan nor how thin to spread the mixture. Do I use an 8x8 pan? A 10x17 pan? There's also a lot of recipes that I'm just unwilling to try because I'm suspicious of the ingredient combinations, such as Plushnuggets (puff pastry with bananas, maple syrup and OLIVE OIL). Other recipes just seem impractical for their ingredients (amber sugar crystals??) or portions (Bean's Cider: 4 apples, pureed and strained to make 1 mug cider). It's fun to read through though, which is why it does get 3 stars, and may very well entice a reader to go pick up one of Dahl's other books from which the recipes are based.
Great fun in a cookbook.......2002-02-15
These recipes are presented in classic Roald Dahl style. Each recipe takes its name from Dahl's books such as Wonka's Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight and Spitsizzlers. Quentin Blake, who illustrated many of Dahl's books also lends a hand to this collection so the reader truly relates to the material as if these were the recipes that Dahl spoke of in his books. Also, each recipe starts out with a quote from the book that served as that recipe's namesake. The author is careful to note that several of these recipes require an adult's supervision as they are listed as part of the ingredients in those recipes that use heat. This will be a clever addition to the cookbook collection that may even inspire the reader to look into Dahl's books serving as the inspiration for these recipes.

Strange food.......2003-05-03
I'm not really sure that I'd ever eat anything from this cookbook on a regular basis, but it makes a great gift for anyone who loves the Roald Dahl books. I think the recipies are more for something like parties or if you have a picky eater.
